Educator reflects on lessons learned from professor
S
ure, sure, it’s a bit cliché — a teacher who REALLY made a difference — but Jim Hayes truly did change my life. I transferred to Cal Poly in the fall years ago and waltzed into Mr. Hayes’ class having no idea what a shock I’d be in for. My community college grades topped even my expectations so my nearly straight A’s built my confidence.
That didn’t last long. Early in the quarter I glanced down at my first major news article for my journalism introductory course and a big fat red F graced the page. “See me” blared across the top with two crimson lines under it. I had misspelled a word. I felt absolutely sick as I glanced around fearing my classmates knew of my failure. People who know me now might be surprised to know that I was wallpaper in college. I had no interest in being noticed and kept my head down. Seriously? I had to seek out my college professor during his office hours and be trapped in there with him to learn of my failure? Eeek! Hayes proved to be stern but almost charming when he explained that my spelling error (a typo reading Thusrday) would have run in the newspaper if I were a reporter. He explained that when there’s an error in a paper, the paper fails. Despite the fact that I had to key the article on a manual Royal typewriter, Hayes took no mercy on me. I think I had to submit a half dozen articles that quarter and needed to do a heck of a good job to offset that garish F.
So what did I learn? I learned attention to detail is everything in journalism. I can’t slap things
together without thoroughly checking that I have done my best work. I also learned that failing can be a good thing. Failure made me a better person. From that day forward I expected more from myself. I knew I had the capability for excellence — and nothing short of that would do. I learned that there is life after failure. Honestly, it made me a better teacher as well and, when appropriate, I discuss with parents why it can be a good time Education columnist for students to fail. Failure is a reminder that we’re capable of so much more and that it’s time to rally and achieve. My love and appreciation go to Jim Hayes, journalism professor extraordinaire, as he welcomes hospice into his home. For those of us who learned from him — whether in the classroom or the newsroom — it’s tough to let him go. Thanks to Jim for helping make this wallpaper a heck of a lot more successful. Peggy Dewane-Pope referred to her AP Style book to make sure of accuracy in this article. She appreciates Jim Hayes as do many reporters from The Bakersfield Californian where he coached years ago. Peggy DewanePope is a seventh grade teacher in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District.
