Neonatal care unit salutes ‘all-stars’ COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL eonatal intensive care unit babies, their parents and San Joaquin Community Hospital caregivers gathered recently to celebrate “all-star” babies. It has been four years since the hospital became a comprehensive center for newborn care, after opening its nine-bed neonatal intensive care unit within the hospital’s award-winning maternity care center. A NICU is an intensive care unit specifically designed to meet the unique needs of ill or premature infants. On Oct. 6, the hospital’s unit hosted a reunion of families and caregivers, marking the fourth reunion of NICU babies and their caregivers to celebrate the accomplishments of these

families and the caregivers at the hospital. This year’s theme was “you’re an all-star baby.” The unit featured games, food and a photographer for free family portraits. This was a celebration to honor the all-star babies born at the hospital’s NICU and the winning team made up of those babies’ families and caregivers who have experienced the benefits of having an intensive care facility for infants here at San Joaquin Community Hospital. The growth in Kern County’s population has increased the need for intensive care facilities for infants. The addition of San Joaquin’s NICU beds is a benefit to Kern County’s communities and the heartwarming NICU stories deserve a celebration, hospital officials said.

San Joaquin Community Hospital participates annually in Links for Life’s “light the town pink” celebration for breast cancer awareness.

Hospital, cancer center ‘light the town pink’ in partnership COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL an Joaquin Community Hospital has partnered with Links for Life to recognize October as National Breast Cancer Awareness, and turn the hospital’s campus pink. Through the end of October, nighttime visitors to the hospital will experience the pink glow of the exterior lights surrounding the hospital — a visual reminder of the significant celebration for the awareness campaign. And new this year: the AIS Cancer Center’s exterior, as well as its twolevel fountain inside of the center, will also be a rosy shade of pink as the hospital partners with dozens of individuals and businesses in support of Links for Life’s “Light the Town Pink” event throughout October.

S

The goal of the project is to light businesses all throughout the Bakersfield area in pink, and raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. “We’re thrilled to be able to participate in this one-of-a-kind event, especially as we have opened the doors to The AIS Cancer Center at (San Joaquin),” said Jimmy Phillips, director of Marketing and Communications at San Joaquin hospital. In addition to turning the hospital “pink,” a team from the hospital and The AIS Cancer Center participated in the downtown Links for Life walk Oct. 1. Among the walkers were Dr. Oscar Streeter, medical director of The AIS Cancer Center; and Lori Muir, the director of The AIS Cancer Center.
