Pet food pantry staffers thank local supporters

T

he past 11 months at the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry have been incredible. We now have our own storefront — a permanent location, and for this, we are so very grateful. We are thrilled to be part of an organization that helps Bakersfield’s pet owners with emergency pet food. Pets are a blessing as they provide comfort, protection, unconditional love and companionship.

But when pet owners can’t afford to feed their pets, the pantry is there to help.

After all, food is a necessity for all of us.

As we enter this upcoming holiday season, let’s all remember the importance of being thankful for the gifts we’ve received. It’s also important to give to those less fortunate. That is how a community thrives.

The pantry has much to be thankful for, especially our wonderful volunteers. They range from preschoolers to

residents in their 80s, and every age in between.

So many organizations, businesses, schools, clubs, scout troops and individuals have reached out to help us with their time and donations of pet food, pet supplies, and information on affordable spay and neuter services.

We owe all our volunteers a hearty thank you for supporting our city’s only pet food pantry.

In early 2013, the pantry was nominated for a Beautiful Bakersfield Award. What an honor it was for all of us! By the time the hot summer months arrived, there was more good news: in June, we participated in the Kern County Nut Festival, an absolutely awesome event. Once again, our volunteers stepped up. They built and donated a huge, elaborate fishing game which we called Nuts For Mutts Fishing Derby, to the pet food pantry.

More than 500 kids went fishing at the Nut Festival. The kids had a blast, and

Program seeks help filling food packs

he Community Action Partnership of Kern is in need of food to help fill backpacks for more than 300 children who count on this food every weekend. We need your help!

We have partnered with YouGiveGoods to help us with our Back Pack Buddies Program. YouGiveGoods makes giving food easy for you and

the people you reach out to in the community by offering a free online service that allows anyone to set up a backpack food drive so people can conveniently buy the food they would like to donate. YouGiveGoods will deliver all the food raised online to us at no charge. Whether you are running an individual drive or a contest with up to 200 teams, they make raising food much easier. Another summertime event took place in June. The Bellvedere Lounge was kind enough to host a motorcycle poker run in memory of Robert Boykin. They cashed in their chips for the Pet Food Pantry.

Also, we owe many thanks to Scruffy To Fluffy Pet Spa for hosting a charity dog wash for us. The spa washed more than 40 dogs.

Another local business was up to their noses in suds. Bakersfield’s own Self-Serve Pet Spa chose the pantry as the beneficiary of their Howl-OWeen charity event and washa-thon. From sudsy dogs to fancy cars, the pantry has had all kinds of help.

Last but not least, we want to say “thank you” to the Corvette Club of Bakersfield for including the Pet Food Pantry in their charity give away.

The pantry was recently able to provide emergency food for two dogs whose owner had lost his job.

“I don’t know what we would have done without the pet Food pantry,” he shared. “My pets worry when I’m stressed out, but the pantry took away my worries after helping feed my pets.”

Now that the owner has found another job, he volunteers at the pantry to help bag food for other needy people and pets!

“The (Kern Community Foundation) is looking forward to the season of giving, and Giving Day is our way to encourage donors to consider the opportunity to give to local charities this year,” said Jeff Pickering, founation president and CEO. “There is seldom a better or more rewarding investment than a gift to an effective charity serving the community.”

The guide will be distributed by The Bakersfield Californian today to 30,000 households.
