‘Tai chi guy’ devoted to healthy practice BY HILLARY HAENES B Well Staff Writer

Editor’s Note: This is part of a series on locals older than 60 years old leading an active and healthy lifestyle. arry Costner is serious about tai chi. In fact, it's become his way of life — the 65-year-old hasn’t missed a day of practice in 14 years. He usually puts in one hour a day, or at least a full set, which takes about 20 minutes. “For me, it’s kind of addictive,” he said. “I get up in the morning looking forward to practicing.” The retired teacher, who taught in the Bakersfield City School District for 37 years, read an article in the late ‘90s about tai chi’s health benefits and decided to pursue it. He’s taken basic classes locally and spent several summers traveling to Portland, Ore. for seminars taught by a Chinese master. “Tai chi is a moderate, gentle exercise that promotes flexibility and balance, as well as being a great stress reliever,” Costner said. It’s even helped diminish his back pain, he said. Known around Bakersfield as “The Tai Chi Guy,” he’s been teaching the traditional Yang style of long form tai chi for 10 years. Costner now privately teaches from home, so his classes are limited to individuals and small groups. Some of his students have been with him for several years, and

see value in it. “Many of my students — some of whom are in their 70s and 80s — have bum knees, replaced hips or chronic conditions. But they use tai chi to make lemonade out of the lemons that life has thrown them.” “Tai chi is not just for seniors, it’s beneficial to people at any age who want to exercise,” Costner said. “It is something younger people should do in preparation for getting older. And, it’s something older people should do to feel younger,” he said. “Being fit doesn’t mean having perfect health. It means working with what you have to maximize your life.” Costner also stays healthy by following a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet, and expects to continue doing tai chi every single day for the rest of his life. “It's something you’ll always have with you if you find a park, or go in your backyard.” If you’re interested in learning more about Costner or want tai chi lessons, visit thetaichiguy.com.

Bakersfield man wins U.S. pool Local shelter awarded foundation championship, makes history grant for abuse victim programs BY JASON BOWMAN Community contributor

efending U.S. Amateur Pool Champion Brian Parks of Bakersfield has made history. Parks recently won the Men’s Division of the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship held in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, Parks becomes the first three-time U.S. Amateur Champion, and the first player to successfully defend his title since 1999. Produced by the American Poolplayers Association, the U.S. Amateur Championship is the most prestigious amateur billiards tournament in the world. Parks joined a field of the nation’s top amateur men’s players Nov. 8 to 10 to compete for the 20th annual title. He was one of just 128 players who qualified for the championship rounds after placing in one of 26 preliminary rounds held nationwide last September in which nearly 2,400 players competed. The victory earns Parks a slot in the 2014 U.S. Open Pro Championship. He also receives an automatic bid to return and defend his title next year. The double elimination tournament offered the top amateur players the opportunity to showcase their skills through a combination of 8-Ball and 9Ball matches. The American Poolplayers Associa-

Y O U R

tion, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States, and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. Nearly 270,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball League play. The association is generally recognized as the governing body of amateur pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur bilParks liards. The association produces three major tournaments each year — the APA National Team Championships, the APA National Singles Championships and the U.S. Amateur Championship — that, together, pay out more than $1.5 million in cash and prizes annually. In 2010, the association’s national team championships were recognized by Guinness World Records as the “world’s largest pool tournament. The association and its championships are sponsored by Aramith, Action Cues and PoolDawg. More information about the U.S. Amateur Championship: visit www.usamateurchampionship.com.

he Mary Kay Foundation has awarded $3 million in grants to 150 domestic violence shelters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, including Bakersfield’s Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault. It received one of the $20,000 unrestricted grants to maintain critical services and programs for individuals who are survivors of domestic abuse. Each year, grants are awarded to at least one domestic violence shelter in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Remaining grants are distributed based on state population, with California receiving a total of 11 grants. Last year, the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault provided critical services to more than 1,198 victims at 1921 19th St., and provided emergency shelter to 186 victims fleeing a violent situation. The alliance provides many critical services such as: • 24-hour hotline. • Emergency shelter. • Counseling for adults and children. • Rape crisis services. • Women’s domestic violence and sexual assault support groups. • Self defense classes.

• Domestic abuse response team. • GED program. “Our staff, volunteers and clients are so thankful for this grant from the Mary Kay Foundation,â€? said Carolann Wooton, the alliance’s external affairs manager. “We’ve provided a safe haven for women who have fled abusive relationships for the past six years, and this grant will go a long way in helping us serve the growing needs of Bakersfield.â€? For nearly 20 years, The Mary Kay Foundation has supported the prevention and elimination of domestic violence, an epidemic that touches one in every four women in her lifetime. Through the foundation’s annual shelter grant program, $34 million has been awarded to domestic violence organizations since 2000. “The Mary Kay Foundation is proud to support local shelters that are on the front lines of helping the thousands of women and children who seek shelter and support from abuse,â€? said Anne Crews, vice president of government relations for Mary Kay Inc. and board member for The Mary Kay Foundation. “The shelter grants are a signature program for The Mary Kay Foundation and represent just one of the ways we are committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence.â€?

Working hard in college is the key that will open doors in the future BY MAHAK SAINI Community contributor

G

oing to college is a choice for many, but for me, it was the key to my future. I knew I was going to attend college from the beginning of middle school. I took college preparatory classes in high school and even took advance placement courses, keeping my grade point average high. I knew I had to attend college

because I have seen my parents struggle every day to make ends meet. I never knew what to expect from colSaini lege and don’t even know how I would make it. Nobody tells you

about the little things. All the information you are given is about how to get in, but not how to make it through. College was a foreign land that I needed to explore on my own. And that’s exactly what I did. Every day was a new challenge, from discovering where my classes were, to whom I needed to communicate with about requirements for my major. I’m the first one to attend

college in my family, so they couldn’t help me navigate through this. The financial part of school is another topic, and there was no help because they were in hardship themselves — but they do as much as they can to motivate me. The stress from classes, projects, and research papers is something I never knew about. I don’t party or drink like so many college students do. Rather, I’m always doing
