Peggy Dewane-Pope’s seventh grade students from Panama-Buena Vista Union School District are busy writing research papers with multiple sources which is a requirement of the Common Core State Standards (CSS.)

Local educator a fan of Common Core Standards

I

experienced pure joy the other day when my eighth-period students wrote their unit two essays. Common Core requires that I have students in seventh grade write research papers with multiple sources so I had them compare articles on two leaders’ economic impacts, law changes, and societal improvements through their leadership. This assignment requires that students provide quotes to prove all claims with commentary on why they selected their quotes. Sounds like pretty heady material. We covered the material thoroughly and I allowed them to ask quesEducation columnist tions to their hearts’ content before I launched them. Now, I do have a few — of what I call my hungry baby birds — who wait for me to give them answers but I wasn’t willing to feed them. I wanted them to do their own search for appropriate arguments. I nervously hovered while they wrote. The result? As I hovered, I realized that they didn’t need me. My usually

PEGGY DEWANEPOPE

noisy crew of kids flipped documents back and forth, reading, evaluating, checking and most importantly — typing. They brilliantly grabbed quotes that fit the demands of the paper without so much as a glance at me as I walked the room. Honestly, two years ago I would not have attempted such an aggressive project with seventh graders who are only a few months into the year. So what prompted this aggressive task that measures their ability to compare, infer, synthesize and deduce? The requirements of the California Common Core State Standards. I feel confident my students will leave my class with higher thinking skills and strong writing ability. I’m loving these standards. Peggy Dewane-Pope is a junior high teacher in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District who is a fan of the California Common Core State Standards.

According to the California Department of Education: In 2010, a number of states across the nation have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace. To learn more, go to: http://www.cde.ca.gov/
