whereas carbohydrates and protein only have 4-calories/gram. Yet the food that leads to diabetes and can severely slow down your metabolism is the “good” guy: carbohydrates. Now, don’t get me wrong. Not all carbohydrates lead to diabetes — but many do. And, unfortunately, in the ’80s and ’90s it replaced fat in most foods because it was lower in calories. What happened during that time period? Diabetes in Americans went from five million people to over 12 million people. That low-fat stuff really helped us out, eh? But the most damaging thing the low-fat craze did was create the stigma that dietary fat led to fat in the body and the result was “Bad.” Today, we’ve got people counting calories and choosing 100-calorie packs filled with artificial chemicals shaped like a cookie instead of eating a 1/2 cup of full-fat yogurt with blueberries. Why? “Because too many calories and too much fat makes me fat.” Recent studies have indicated that calorie counting can actually lead to eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia. How does this happen? When people are tracking calories, too many “numbers” can make them feel like a failure. So what do they do? Get the food out. This can occur in the form of laxatives, or self-induced vomiting (bulimia nervosa). Others take the approach of less food is better. After all, calories are evil. Somewhere along the line, the health and nutrition field forgot to tell people that they NEED calories to live! They also forgot to tell people that they use a lot of calories just being awake and being alive. They didn’t need to be fearful of food — they needed to embrace that food can be fun, is a part of living and no food is “bad” — some are just better than others. The way to determine which foods are better than others is based on how much nutrition they provide — not by how many calories they contain. or many people, counting calories is the only way they know to actually lose weight. They’ve bought into the notion that weight loss is nothing more than eating fewer calories than they burn. This creates a calorie deficit, and PRESTO! Weight loss! Unfortunately, there is much more to the story when it comes to weight loss. There is also much more to the story when it comes to counting calories. For decades, writing down everything you ate, totaling up the calories and then matching them against, well, a rough estimate of how many calories we burn was what people did. But what calorie counting has done to many is create a bad relationship with food. Now, don’t go labeling me as a weirdo who needs to get over his “relationship with food” theory — at least hear me out. Food is how our body receives energy to go Columnist through the day. It’s what provides our heart the energy to beat, our brain the energy to think, our digestive tract the energy to operate and our muscles the energy to move. But when we restrict calories, we limit the amount of energy we provide our body to do those things. When we count calories, we immediately see food simply as energy — we don’t see it as nutrition. This is a big distinguishment that needs to be made — because food is more than calories, right? When we just look at the calories, we begin to label some foods as better, some as worse and others as downright bad. Can a food that provides energy for our brain, a transportation system for our body to absorb four very important vitamins (A,D,E, & K), the outer coating for our nerves to send and receive electrical signals from the brain, as well as make our hair shiny and our eyes work better be all that bad? Well, if you look at the calories, it sure can. The food I just described is the ever abundant “F” word: FAT. Yes, dietary fat has 9-calories/gram
