Seawork charity partner hopes to do itself out of a job
Seawork is delighted to announce a new charity partnership with Mercy Ships.
Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 55 countries, providing services valued at
more than £1.3 billion. By improving healthcare delivery in every country the charity visits, Mercy Ships is working to eradicate the diseases of poverty and effectively do itself out of a job.
Andrew Webster, CEO of Mercator Media - the organiser of Seawork, said, “At Seawork we are always looking for ways to support seafarers around the globe, so are delighted to have Mercy Ships as our charity partner. This international charity relies on skilled volunteers, with marine or medical training, in partnership with developing nations, to deliver accessible, free surgery and medical care for those in unjust poverty and urgent need. We hope that this partnership raises awareness of the amazing work that these hospital ships and their volunteer crew achieve.”
Hot off the press, Mercy Ships International has just announced the charity has joined forces with The MSC Foundation and the MSC Group to build a new hospital ship.

SIX-VESSEL ORDER BACKS CARBON NEUTRAL COMMITMENT
Damen Shipyards Group has launched the second of its fully electric RSD-E Tugs 2513 at Damen Song Cam Shipyard. The tug is being built for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, together with five conventional RSD Tugs 2513 and, when delivered later this year, will be the first fully electric tug to operate in European waters.
The Belgian port, one of the busiest in Europe, is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. This six-vessel order is in full compliance with IMO Tier III regulations, with the RSD-E Tug 2513 able to operate with zero emissions. The port currently operates a hydrogen powered tug and is soon to begin operations with a retrofitted methanol tug.
The RSD-E Tug 2513 can carry out at least two towage operations on a single charge and can be fully recharged in just two hours. The battery system is designed to withstand 30,000 cycles during its lifecycle, consistent with the lifetime of the vessel. In addition to supplying the vessel, Damen is also providing the Port of Antwerp-Bruges with the charging equipment and onshore charging infrastructure required to operate the vessel.
Damen launches fully electric RSD-E Tug 2513 for Port of Antwerp-Bruges
The port was one of the first to operate a conventional RSD Tug 2513 following Damen’s release of the vessel onto the market in 2018. It was the success of this vessel that led to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges latest order with Damen, as it seeks to increase sustainability.
It is the port’s intention to gradually move towards zero emission and takes a leading role as innovator and facilitator to reach this goal.
CLASS-LEADING IMAGE STABILISATION TECHNOLOGY AT SEAWORK
FUJIFILM UK will showcase its entire line-up of FUJINON binoculars at Seawork 2024, including the newly launched compact waterproof models, the FUJINON TECHNO-STABI TS16x28WP and TS12x28WP.
Delivering a combination of optical excellence, waterproof durability and class-leading image stabilisation technology, the FUJINON range includes the long-established FUJINON FMTRSX commercial marine binoculars, the innovative TECHNO-STABI TS-X 1440 with built-in vibration control, the advanced HYPER CLARITY series offering outstanding brightness and contrast, and the specialist long-range observation model LB150 25x150MT-SX.
All will be available for demonstration at the exhibition on the Fujifilm stand Q34 on the Quayside Observation Platform.seamless support for the project’s infrastructure development.
World’s first retrofitted Electric Crew Transfer Vessel (E-CTV)
A CTV’s diesel engines will be replaced with a zero-emissions Volvo Penta solution to create the world’s first retrofitted Electric Crew Transfer Vessel (E-CTV). Using an existing vessel can deliver better circularity and sustainability and helped to make the project one of just 10 leading-edge developments awarded UK government funding as part of an industry-led transition to net-zero.
Retrofitting will be done on Ginny Louise, a 20m, dieselpowered Mercurio vessel. The old propulsion system will be replaced with a Quad Installation of Volvo Penta IPS 30 paired with fully electric motors and over 2 MW of on-board battery capacity. The completed vessel will be re-named e-Ginny.
The vessel is being developed for sea transport and crew transit service operator Tidal Transit. Cost of the retrofit is estimated at £8 million (€9.4 million) with £6.3 million (€7.4 million) coming from the Zero Emissions Vessel and Infrastructure (ZEVI) program. The program is part of the UK Government’s plan (via its Department of Transport and Innovate UK innovation agency) to develop, deploy and operate clean maritime solutions.
