e are very happy that the second issue of Mercedes-Benz Arena Magazine coming to

you! As the iconic live entertainment destination in Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz Arena has brought many great shows to the audience this summer, we are the heartbeat of Shanghai. We had METALLICA for 2 days, whose 1st show was sold out within 10 minutes, which was a new record in the music industry of China. Michael Jackson “The Immortal World Tour” was a riveting fusion of 3D visuals, dance, music and fantasy and took us into the story of the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. Chinese Pop Divo Andy Lau presented his 4 shows whose staging production cost 80 million RMB, this was the highest record so far among all commercial events that held in Mercedes-Benz Arena. The Mixing Room & MUSE has become a new destination of vibrant trendsetters of Shanghai. We have done 6 shows across jazz, pop, rock within this quarter, artists were big names like Tony Bennett, George Benson, Owl City and Coheed & Cambria. The Mixing Room & MUSE brings you a close up look at the artists and makes the event a private and varied experience. The last quarter of 2013 will highlight the success of Mercedes-Benz Arena and its ability to hold diverse event type in different configurations such as basketball, ice show and concert. We will celebrate with you every breathtaking moment like the highlight of the whole year the NBA China Game Shanghai, family show series Disney On Ice Treasure Trove. The Mixing Room & MUSE will hold great shows like legendary jazz singer Herbie Hancock and the 2010, 2012 winners of America’s Got Talent TV show. Besides the visual enjoyment we create, a brand new experience of tasty excitement has been brought to the Mercedes-Benz Arena recently. The award-winning hotel, Le Royal Méridien Shanghai joined the venue as our official catering and concessions partner, introducing their five-star F&B service to our distinguished customers. Taking Flight Adam Young’s electro-pop project Owl City wowed a packed house at The Mixing Room & Muse in August. Below he talks China, his new album and working with Carly Rae Jepsen How do you feel about coming back to China? Asia has always been really good to me and it’s one of my favorite places to visit. I am so excited to come back since it has been a while since I’ve been back. You’ve been to Shanghai before. How was that experience? The experience was eye-opening. It was my first time in China and I just remember being so amazed at how incredible the culture and buildings were. This time, I hope I get some more free time to try out the local food. Why did you name your new album The Midsummer Station? It’s just this made up place in my mind that I envision as an escape from reality. I wanted listeners to create their own version of their “midsummer station” when listening to the record. How did Carly Rae Jepsen’s appearance on the hit “Good Time” come about? I knew I wanted a female counterpart on the record and after listening to some of her stuff, I just knew the voice would be perfect for the song. I sent her an email with the parts and she sent her parts right back. She was great to work with. Your career first got started on MySpace, when the site was at its peak. There’s been a sharp decline in its popularity since then. Do you ever wonder if you’d have become as big as you now are if you hadn’t been using it at just the right time? Yeah, I never thought about it that way but it’s true that I owe my entire career to social media. It’s so fascinating how quickly music can spread these days without someone ever having to leave their house. You wrote your first songs battling insomnia in your parents’ basement. How would you say success has affected your writing? Success hasn’t really affected me. I am still very much the same private and grounded person so I don’t really see any effects on my writing.

I Left My Heart in Shanghai Legendary singer Tony Bennett played two packed out nights at The Mixing Room & Muse in September. Here, he talks about his career, Frank Sinatra and still being successful at the age of 87 Very few musical acts have had the length of career that you’ve enjoyed. What do you think is the secret to your staying power? I started out recording with the premise that I wanted to create a “hit catalog” not just have “hit songs” that would be big for a few weeks and then instantly forgotten. I always want to present songs that respect the intelligence of the audience and not just novelty songs that are silly. Good music lasts forever. Why do you think younger audiences in the 1990s and today have responded so well to your sound? I think good music transcends generations - so it doesn’t matter if the song was written 500 years ago or 50 years ago - it still sounds contemporary and has appeal to all ages. That has always been my game - finding songs that are good and go beyond demographics or genre and I think the internet has been good for young people because they can find songs on their own and listen to all kinds of music - they aren’t locked in to what a DJ is playing on the radio. Its a very healthy approach now to music. What’s been the most challenging part of your career to date? I love jazz music and when I first started recording I had to fight every step of the way to work with jazz musicians and sing jazz standards and not just the novelty pop songs that were so popular. Last year the record label released a boxed set

collection of all of my records and it was very satisfying to me that I felt there wasn’t one record in the collection that I felt wasn’t of good quality. So fighting to sing the best songs with the best musicians early on in my career was worth it. What was Frank Sinatra’s impact on your career? I was ten years younger than Sinatra so I started out as a bobby soxer just as much a fan of his as the swooning girls. He was always very good to me and I would come to him for advice or I would find out from another entertainer that Frank said something nice about me in one of his shows. When he called me “his favorite singer” in LIFE magazine it was tremendous boost to me - I felt from that point on that I needed to live up to his accolade. Although I was never part of the Rat Pack and he lived on the West Coast and I lived in New York, we always stayed in touch and in some ways he was like a brother to me. In fact, the first thing that Exploring the Arts did was we named and built a public arts high school the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts to honor his memory. You’re now 87 and are showing no signs of slowing down. How long do you plan to keep performing? I have a personal goal as I still love singing and want to be able to continue performing until I am 100.

On playing in China for the first time James Hetfield I was very amazed at the response and the reaction, the energy that was given to us. I didn’t expect it to be that intense. I was told that people would be sitting down and clapping and very polite. And that would be fine as well, but we were very excited to see people singing the words, joining in and becoming a part of the show, which is what we really love. Kirk Hammett I was really blown away by how great the audience was and how familiar they were with our material. Robert Trujillo It was great to see that it was also a mixed batch of people - you had lots of women, lots of young people, lots of older people all enjoying it, standing up all the way to the top. That’s important, we feed off that. On what took Metallica so long to come and play in China Lars Ulrich We weren’t invited until now. At least not to my knowledge. The e-mail shows up, ‘do you want to come to China?’ and we’re like ‘of course we do’. We have a tendency in this band to... people come to us with ‘come to our festival’, ‘come make a record with Lou Reed’ - people throw ideas at us and we quite often say yes. We’re not particularly pro-active at pushing ourselves into places. We sort of just get invited. Not to my knowledge have we ever been invited before. I know that other bands have played here before, but it was just the matter of the right time. Sooner or later, Metallica shows up. On filming a documentary in China LU New experiences bring opportunities for new collaborations and new creative endeavours - it’s that simple. Being here in

this wonderful country and feeling the energy and excitement, the idea came up to celebrate it and to try to document it and to try to get the experience out. As you know, there are a lot of you and there may be 20,000 of you who came to this arena yesterday and today so we figured that if we filmed and shared the experience then maybe we could get to more of you and maybe there could be a next level relationship between Metallica and China that could last for decades. On interactions with their Chinese fans LU [After the show] we went back to the hotel and ate dinner... JH The owner of the restaurant liked us I think... but he was French so... LU We’ve been doing meet and greets and the interactions with the fans have been very emotionally engaged, they’re very appreciative and thankful that we’re here. Obviously there is a language barrier. What we try to do, we try to loosen the moment with banter and so on and some of that doesn’t seem to translate when there’s language issues or whatever, but you can feel that there is a passion and that there’s been a longing for this moment that is really special. Most of the time, the communication just comes from the audience when you’re up on stage. You sense what’s going on and what’s coming back at you. People all over the world have different ways of expressing and you sort of learn that there is a correlation between the way people express themselves in different cultures to what they throw at you in gigs - in Italy, they’re very much like passionate southern Europeans, in Latin America this happens and in certain Nordic countries they’re a little more conservative. You learn those patterns along the

He shares his thoughts on China and more below Q: What inspired you to have cross genres on your album “Believe”? A: It was something that I wanted to do because I feel like I’m not restricted to one certain kind of sound. On the album, I got to work with Taylor Swift and Kanye West, and it wasn’t weird at all because you know the type of music that I make. It was really cool to be able to collaborate with these different people like Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Timbaland, Mike Posner and so many people to help find my sound and where I wanted to go with the album. Q: If you could choose anyone, dead or alive, to collaborate with, whom would that be? A: I would definitely do a collaboration with Michael Jackson. He was definitely an inspiration to me as an artist. So, I would definitely do a collaboration with him. Q: Being only 19 and having the world in the palm of your hands, how do you go through your day knowing you have a quarter of the world like that? One tweet could send the whole world into a frenzy. A: With power comes responsibility. For me, I make sure to be careful. Sometimes I want to impulse tweet but I make sure to take 10 or 15 seconds and ask myself “should I really tweet this or not”. If no, I just backspace it all. I always take those special seconds to think about it. Q: How does it feel to have more control on this album? A: It feels great to have control of the album and know each song is a representation of me. It was a great time and I loved recording the album. Q: On this album you work with some big names like Drake and Kanye West. Was that a scary transition for you? A: It wasn’t a scary transition, but it was a transition I felt like it was time to make. I don’t think it was too much with this album, it wasn’t too shockingly different but it was different. I think I grew fans with this album, and I’ve noticed more guys at my concerts and older people. It’s been cool to see the transition and different phases in the audience. But I don’t want to lose my young fans. I always want to keep my young fans, and I think that’s what separated MJ from everyone else. He never lost his young fans, whether you were a baby or 80 years old, you liked MJ. Some of these people put themselves in a box and start singing things that are inappropriate or things that young people cant listen to. That’s the thing with my music, its appropriate, it is edgy, and I never want to be a cookie cutter because those people make my angry. I’m not perfect, and I do make mistakes, I don’t want to be clean but I also want to be a good role model through my music and interviews. I do have bad days, and bad interviews, and can be upset,

but I think overall people see that I’m a good person. What was your first reaction when someone offered you the chance to come to China? JB I’ve always wanted to go to Beijing and Shanghai. Maybe we’ll just go on a road trip and take a bus across the country.

Hancock was born in Chicago, Illinois. Like many jazz pianists, Hancock started with a classical music education. He studied from age seven, and was considered a child prodigy when he performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11. Through his teens, Hancock never had a jazz teacher, but developed his ear and sense of harmony by listening to various types of music and vocal stylings. In 1963, Miles Davis invited Herbie to join the Miles Davis Quintet. During his five years with Davis, Herbie and his colleagues recorded many classics, including ‘ESP’, ‘Nefertiti’ and ‘Sorcerer’. Later on, Herbie made appearances on Davis’ groundbreaking ‘In a Silent Way’ and ‘Bitches Brew’, which heralded the birth of jazz-fusion. After leaving Davis, Herbie put together a new band called The Headhunters and, in 1973, recorded ‘Head Hunters.’ With its crossover smash hit single “Chameleon,” the record became the first jazz album to go platinum. Now in the fifth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Though one can’t track exactly which direction he will go in next, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands. “Herbie Hancock is a jazz legend,” says Michael Craig Enoch, General Manager of the Mercedes-Benz Arena. “There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B. The Mixing Room & MUSE is happy to welcome Herbie Hancock to Shanghai.”

The Expo International Film Art Center is a high-end professional cinema consisting of 6 fully-digital video halls, totaling 721 available seats, and one VIP hall. If you think about it, the popularity of the character is the combination of that gruffness and edge and also Hugh’s ability to play the heart of him. You watch thinking: he’s very dangerous but would never hurt me, he’d protect me.

You throw in some humour too. There’s some. But in making a more intense film, we didn’t put in as much humour as some of the other films have. The model I told Hugh I was trying to emulate was Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’d kill you and spit on you and say something funny, maybe.
