e are happy to bring you the second issue of the MercedesBenz Arena Quarterly Magazine in 2014.

Since I last wrote to you, the Mercedes-Benz Arena has continued to bring a wide array of international superstars to Shanghai, providing an outstanding audio-visual experience for our audience – from “Captain Poet” James Blunt to punk pop queen Avril Lavigne and Jonathan Lee once again confirmed his position as the godfather of Chinese music to a buzzing, sold out crowd. Howeverm perhaps no show was more exciting than watching legendary band The Rolling Stones rock Shanghai for the first time in eight years. In the past few weeks, Mercedes-Benz Arena has continued to prove it is worthy of its moniker “The Heartbeat of Shanghai”. Grammy winner and Superbowl halftime performer Bruno Mars kicked off an exhilarating Q2 schedule. Following Bruno’s show, we saw the likes of American music legend Lionel Richie and “The Waltz King” Andre Rieu grace our main stage. Brilliant performances by Show Luo, Sodagreen, Sam Hui, and Taylor Swift will round out the rest of the spring line-up. On stage in The Mixing Room & MUSE, we’ve welcomed Cuban jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, a star student of the famed American producer Quincy Jones. Alfredo wrote the 2010 World Expo theme song “Better City, Better Life” and on April 14th he performed his first solo concert in China. Last but not least, many thanks to Together Trading and FEIMALV for becoming the newest addition to our VIP suite holding community. Mercedes-Benz Arena promises to continue combining high quality service and the best in live entertainment to create unforgettable experiences for all of our fans. We are the Heartbeat of Shanghai!

Like a Rolling Stone After more than 50 years together, The Rolling Stones are still one of the biggest bands on the planet. Legendary guitarist Keith Richards talks about their return to Shanghai and how it feels to be on the road again at the age of 70

A few minutes before our interview with Keith Richards, the phone rings and a woman’s voice tells us that we can expect his call shortly. But when the phone goes again, rather than hearing Richards’ distinctive drawl, we pick up to a burst of female laughter. ‘Sorry,’ the voice eventually recovers. ‘I’m being entertained here.’ Richards’ rasping, Muttley-like chuckle subsequently comes over the line. It’s clear that at the age of 70, and having just become a grandfather for the fifth time, the Rolling Stones guitarist is still as dastardly charming as ever. A name that’s universally synonymous with rock star excess, it almost seems like an anomaly – albeit a happy one – that Richards is still with us. Yet here he is, as playful as ever, as he warms up for a mammoth tour that will bring him and fellow septuagenarians Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts, plus the relatively youthful 66year-old Ronnie Wood and 65-year-old former Stone Mick Taylor, to MercedesBenz Arena in Shanghai with AEG Live Asia. After a typically British exchange of pleasantries and discussion about the weather back in his native United Kingdom (‘it’s all underwater at the moment!’ he chuckles), Richards begins by discussing the band’s 14 On Fire preparations in Paris.

How are the rehearsals for the tour going so far? Oh man, we’re really, really on top form. I mean we’re kind of waltzing it. Rehearsing’s always great fun because you can say ‘stop here’ and ‘check this out’ and it’s an interesting process. At the moment everybody’s on top form and I’m amazed. I’m always – I don’t know why by now – but I’m always amazed at The Stones when I get back to playing with them that, err, well, how damn good they are! Is playing together something that you slip back into very quickly when the band meet up with each other again? Yes it is. I mean there’s always a point when you arrive at rehearsals on the first day, you’re always wondering is it all gonna click together? But the minute you’re in the room and Charlie Watts starts to hit the drums, it all seems to be so… I mean it’s like breathing, man, it’s so natural. All we do in rehearsals is really try and improve on what we’ve done before and work out a few possible songs that we can throw in to just change up the set list here and there. Otherwise, it’s a doddle. How often do you play outside of rehearsals and shows these days? Every day, man. I’ve got to keep my chops together. Also every day I get an idea. Sometimes it might be just for five minutes, but usually every day I play a little bit and if not, I go to the piano.

Do you feel you’re still growing musically? I think you really have to. Even though you might be fooling yourself, but I think you have to feel that you’re still learning every single day or just, y’know, that things are still moving forward. When you’ve got a discography that goes back 50 years, how do you go about composing your set lists? Basically, what I do is I listen to what Mick has to say because it’s very important that the singer feels confident about what he’s going to start with, and then after that it’s a matter of pacing. It’s really a matter of trying to balance a set list so it works throughout two hours, so you have just the right amount of energy and the right amount of melodies and songs and then the final part which is obviously going to be, y’know, all systems go and both barrels blasting. Do you still relish going out on the road? Yeah man, I love it. I mean after 50-odd years of it, it’s almost like home. Sometimes you feel that you’re more at home doing this than you do at home. Is there ever any reluctance from the rest of the band when it comes to touring? Very little, no. We only do this when there’s an obvious desire or need. Mick’ll call me and say, ‘Isn’t it about time we did something?’ and I’ll say, ‘I’ve been waiting for this call, how does Charlie feel?’ and usually it’s almost sort of a group desire to do it. It’s not difficult for us to put it together. We did have five years off the road in the early part of this century and there was… for a while, I was wondering if I was going to get the call again. But really, I actually do wait for Mick Jagger to say ‘I feel like rocking’ and then it’s, ‘Okay mate, I’m right behind ya’ and that’s the way we do it, y’know? Do you see a point in the future where you won’t get those calls again? It’s always possible I suppose, I mean we are kicking along now. I think we’re all pensioners – officially – although I don’t feel like it and I don’t think anybody else does. I think it’s in the blood, y’know? You love your job and there’s nothing like standing in front of a load of people and going, ‘Come on, yeah, yeah, yeah’. It’s one of the best jobs in the world, man… and I’m well paid too! How did it feel finally getting to perform at Glastonbury Festival in the UK for the first time last year? Oh man, that was so cool. That was always one of those gigs that we were almost about to do for years and years and it never happened, but last year it finally did and it was also some of the best weather that

Glastonbury ever had. It was brilliant. I mean, we picked the right time. I was blown away by the size of it, y’know, and I’ve played a lot of big gigs, but Glastonbury is pretty much mind blowing when you look at all the audience going over the hill and they’re still there, it’s amazing. It was great fun, I loved it. That and Hyde Park was fantastic. It’s your home town, y’know, so you’re playing to your locals. It’s a great welcome you get, it’s just really fantastic. There can’t be many places left for you to play now… Apart from Macau. And Abu Dhabi – they’re both new gigs. But sometimes it’s very interesting to go back to places like, well, Shanghai for instance. I mean, what is it? Eight years? It was our only time there and I’m really interested to see the difference and to catch up with it again. Did you get to see much of the city when you were here last? A little bit, not a lot. I’m hoping to do a little bit more this time. I remember playing ‘Wild Horses’ with Cui Jian. That’s basically what I remember as a highlight of it. Otherwise it was a great gig – a lot of expats of course! Is that something you have to accept when you play in cities like this or do you wish there was a larger local component? Well, that’s something I’d like to stress – I do hope that this time we see more of the locals around, but it’s not for me to say, really, is it? Bless their hearts, it’s an incredibly diverse country and it’s rocking, y’know, so I hope we get a few who come and rock with us! When you’re on these long tours does it all tend to blur into one a little bit? Well, every country is different and you do come away with distinct memories of different places, y’know? I can’t say that everything isn’t a blur, but that’s probably more my fault! I’m always incredibly interested in travelling and if you want a job, you can’t do better than the Royal Navy – you see the world, mate, and I’ve certainly seen it a few times. And what’s interesting is the returning to places, seeing what’s changed and what’s going on. I’m looking forward to this one especially. So do you have favourite places to visit? I tell you what, I couldn’t pick a baby on that one. As long as the audience is there and rocking, that’s where I love ’em. It’s part of my job and I’ve never ever got tired of doing this stuff. And to come back and do it again, it’s a blessing, man.

滚石乐队: 到了领养老金的年纪, 轰轰烈烈好过平静 滚石又回来了!上一次几位老爷子来上海开唱的时候Miley Cyrus还是Hannah Montana,Taylor Swift还 没有专攻分手情歌,Justin Bieber他妈还没在Youtube上传视频,Youtube也还被没被封…… 8年可以改变太多的东西,但却无法改变滚石乐队之于摇滚的狂热,正如吉他手Keith Richards在 近日接受《Timeout上海》专访所说的那样“有时在路上让我比在自己家更有在家的感觉。”

吐舌头被Miley Cyrus拿去当形象标志时,他们笑了;当29岁的Avril Lavigne高唱Let them know that we're still Rock n Roll的时候, 他们笑了;当Adam Levine 在Moves Like Jagger里裸身扭动时,他们笑 了……这4位平均年龄71的古稀老人用实际行动一次又一次地证实着自 己“摇滚界的活化石”的地位,虽然都到了可以领养老金的年纪,但巡演 海报上那大大的“On Fire”却在昭示他们摇滚一辈子的宣言。

这两个小时,保证你的体力足够应付,你的曲目数量也不多不少。演唱 会的最终部分就得蓄势待发,华丽落幕。 (笑)

巡演在即,乐队目前的排练情况如何? 喔,天哪,我们现在的状态太好了,可以说一切驾轻就熟。彩排的乐趣就 在于你可以随时在一个地方停下来,然后进行创作和改编,这个即兴的 过程太好玩了。现在乐队每一个人都处在最佳状态,我特别感慨,我也说 不上为什么,每次我们为了演出聚首排练的时候,我总还是会感慨这帮 人怎么就这么牛X。 (笑)

有没有乐队成员曾经对于再上路巡演不是很情愿?有谁是需要劝 说来参与巡演的吗? 没有。我们都是在大伙一致想这么做的时候才聚首的。Mick会打给我 说“是不是我们该做点什么了?”我会说“就在等你这电话呢,Charlie 咋说啊?”通常都是大家意见一致地想要做,而我们也很轻易地就能 重聚在一起。的确,早些年,我们曾经有5年都没有在巡演,那时候我 都觉得可能等不来这通电话了,但我心里一直还在期待着Mick对我 说“我想去摇滚一把”,然后我说“兄弟,咱这就走一个”的画面。基本 上,这就是我们决定每一次巡演的过程。

所以你总是很快进入排练状态吗? 没错。当然每次彩排第一天,当你踏进彩排场地,也总有那么一个时刻 你会问自己,这次能顺利进行吗,但只要Charlie Watts开始在鼓面奏响 第一声,这个问题就立刻有了答案,天,这一切就好像呼吸一样自然。我 们的彩排就是给那些我们已经做过的千百次表演加入更多的尝试和改 进,再在既定曲目单合适的地方增删几首歌曲让整场表演有些变化。至 于其他的部分,就是小菜一碟了。 (笑) 你们拥有贯穿了半个世纪的唱片, 那 通 常 是 如 何 安 排 表 演 曲目 的?从哪开始着手呢? 嗯,基本上我是这么做的,开 场部分曲目听取Mick的意见, 因为演唱会开始让主唱唱自 己最有把握的歌是非常重要 的,接着按表演节奏排曲目就 好了,安排多少快歌,再安排多 少慢歌。所以,安排表演曲目就是 一个平衡统筹的活儿,你得恰当运用

你喜欢这种为了巡演进行而准备的过程吗?那种再一次上路的感觉? 当然了,我很享受这个过程。经历了50多年这样的生活,排练时就跟 在自己家似的。有时在路上让我比在自己家更有在家的感觉。

那你会不会觉得未来的某天你将不再会接到这电话? 我觉得吧,这肯定是可能,虽然我们此时都还健在。 (笑)虽然自己不 觉得,其他人可能也不这么觉得,但其实我们几个现在都到了领养老 金的年纪。骨子里的热情都是源自对于这份事业的热爱,没有哪份工 作能和我们现在做的相比——站在成千上万的人面前,享受万众齐 呼,迎接万千宠爱。这真的是世间最棒的工作之一……而且薪水还非 常不错。 (笑) 说起来,去年你们第一次登上了格拉斯顿伯里(Glastonbury)音乐 节的舞台,感觉如何? 天哪,简直太酷了。我们有好几次都差点要在格拉斯顿伯里音乐节表 演,但总是各种阴错阳差,直到去年才终于实现。我们挑对了日子,连 天公也作美。我在那么多不同的地方表演过,但格拉斯顿伯里音乐节 的庞大规模还是让我惊叹,特别是当你看到满坑满谷的乐迷共襄盛 举的时候,那种感动难以言喻。那次表演非常过瘾,我也很享受。在海 德公园的演出也相当难忘。

那几场也非常盛大。 是啊,而且是在自己的家乡,表演给自己的老乡们看,受到的热烈的欢 迎让人很难忘。 应该没有什么地方是你们没有去表演过的了吧? 这次巡演,澳门跟阿布扎比这两站都将会是第一次去表演的地方。但 有时重回故地的感觉也很奇妙,比如说上海,上次来是什么时候?八年 前?那次是我们唯一去过的一次,我非常期待看到这座城市现在的变 化,跟这位老朋友叙叙旧。真是太久远了啊。 上一次在上海有没有出去好好看看这座城市呢? 上次我们来去匆匆,演出结束没呆就走了,所以基本没咋看。这次我们 会呆3天,希望可以在这个城市逛逛,好好感受一下。 这种战线很长的巡演到最后在你们脑海中是不是就自动融合成了一 场演唱会的记忆? 嗯,怎么说呢,其实不会,因为每个国家都各有特色,离开的时候都会 连同当地的独特记忆打包带走。当然了,肯定也不会每一站的所有事儿 都记得一清二楚,这主要是我的问题。 (笑)我非常喜欢四处旅行,读万 卷书不如行万里路嘛,当别人才开始放眼世界的时候, 我早都看了它好几遍了。故地重游时看到的 那些变迁和发展更是别有一番趣味,你 曾到过并工作过的地方将永远占据 着你心灵的一个角落。对于这次 的上海之行我也充满期待。 那你最爱的地方是哪里? 跟你这么说吧,哪里有爱音 乐的观众哪里就会是我爱的 地方,所以其实没有唯一。我 的工作就是这样,我也永远 不会厌倦它,音乐对于人的力 量也总是让我感动。能够多年之 后再次回来以音乐感动大家,我非 常感恩。 对于之前的上海演唱会你还留有那些回忆? 嗯,很棒的一次演出,我记得跟崔健一起表演了《Wild Horses》,这 是我对这场演唱会的记忆最深刻的地方,当然了,现场还有好多的 “老外”。 (笑) 那你们会更希望来看演唱会的更多是本地观众吗? 嗯,这也是我想强调的一点。我真心希望这一次我们可以见到更多的本 地观众,但是,这也不是我能决定的。中国是一个非常多元的国家,也 充满摇滚气息。 (笑)所以希望会有更多的本地观众会来和我们一起摇 滚。 那对于香港的记忆呢?你们上一次是在2003年SARS之后去那里开 唱的…… 没错,但其实我们早在1965年左右就去过香港了,这是一座很有活力 的城市。我还记得当时在一天之内我就拿到了定做的T恤,挺好玩的。 (笑)嗯,这座城市的活力还是最感染我的地方,那种人头攒动,熙熙 攘攘,永不停歇的活力。我想,现在香港也一定还是那样充满活力。

显然,音乐在今天也仍旧是你生活中的一个重要部分。现在你拿起吉 他玩音乐的频率是怎样的呢? 每天都玩。一日不练,如隔三秋,技艺必须不断打磨,而且我每天都会 产生新的想法。当然有时可能只是弹个个把分钟,但基本上每天都会弹 一下的,就算不弹吉他也会去弹会儿钢琴。 那这样说来,你会觉得你仍旧是一名在成长中的音乐人吗? 这是必须得,必须的。就算已经到了某个程度,你还是得有那种每天都 在充电的感觉才行,不然就只能被后浪拍死在沙滩上。

Boy from Mars 来自火星的男孩 Bruno Mars talks about coming to Shanghai for the first time, performing at the Super Bowl halftime show and wanting to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix How did it feel to be one of the youngest artists to ever play the Super Bowl half time show? I just wanted to make sure that we did it right, treat it like any other show. Even though the public didn’t want to treat it like that but that’s how we had to walk into it, that’s the only way we were going to do a decent job. The Super Bowl is a massive pop culture gig for any artist to land, it’s such an honor, but with that honor comes a lot of pressure. We were the first to ever do it outdoors, so there was the pressure of it being cold, and we rehearsed in 9 degree weather. We had a lot of factors that were working against us, but it turned out to be a lot of fun and something that I have with me forever. I can tell my kids that Dad performed at the Super Bowl. What led you to invite the Red Hot Chili Peppers? How did it feel to share a stage with them? Awesome. Those guys are incredible. We had just as much fun rehearsing with them. We were rehearsing in LA for about a week, two weeks, and we were all in this together. It’s easy to find what you have in common with other musicians because we’re all doing this for the same reasons. So being able to hang out with guys like that was awesome.

How did your production work inform your own music? You kind of learn about yourself, and you realize what you gravitate to more, and you use all the knowledge you’ve learned, like working on music with different artists. You take all the knowledge you’ve learned and you put it into your own music, and it’s just kind of like a melting pot. So you might have done something on one song that felt right, and you start taking different things and put it into your own music, and it trickles down. You performed in a family band from a very young age. Are they still going now? They’re still singing and songwriting. They have to find their way, just like every artist has to put in the work and the hours and write songs. It’s just like any occupation, you got to study. And that’s what they’re going through right now and I’m helping them as much as I can. What are you looking forward to about coming to Shanghai for the first time? Just being there. Growing up in Hawaii I was always around Asian culture. I’m just excited to see it and feel

it. We don’t get a chance to spend that much time out there so I’m going to be really taking advantage of every opportunity I can. And especially performing in front of the audience that we’ve never performed in front of.

How did the name Moonshine Jungle come about for this tour? Well I got a song on the album called ‘Moonshine’, and I got a song on my album called ‘Gorilla’. I open with ‘Moonshine’ and I close with ‘Gorilla’ in the show. It’s giving people an experience, and with the jungle and the whole theme, we wanted to make it feel like you’re stepping into something a little unpredictable. Unorthodox. And maybe a little dangerous.

Mercedes-Benz Arena Latin Jazz Night 梅赛德斯-奔驰文化中心

拉丁风情爵士夜 Talented Jazz pianist and composer Alfredo Rodriguez gave a faultless performance at the Mixing Room & MUSE in Mercedes-Benz Arena on April 14th, presented by American Airlines. During the two and half hour show, Alfredo demonstrated his music brilliance to an appreciative audience in Shanghai. Besides the concert, Mercedes-Benz Arena held a lively cocktail party before the show. VIP guests were invited to attend the cocktail party including the Consul General of

Cuba. The venue was decorated with coconut trees, shells and red fans, while guests were treated to themed drinks such as mojitos. Distinctive Cuban hand-rolled cigarettes were also on offer, while a specially invited DJ span tunes to get people in the mood for the Latin fiesta that awaited. After the cocktail party, Alfredo and his band brought the house down with their consummate performance. Shanghai jazz fans were given a real treat and are already looking forward to Alfredo’s next show in the city.

James Blunt: ‘Captain Poet’ How did you get started? Belief is everything and naiveté helps. I wrote songs and I told people that I was going to become a professional musician. You recorded bits of your first album, Back to Bedlam, in Carrie Fisher’s bathroom. What’s she like? And what’s her bathroom like? She’s clinically insane. Her bathroom is like a Mexican bordello and it happened because we were short of cash.

So, when you’re not lurking in bathrooms, what do you listen to? What’s your guilty pleasure track? We have an afterparty iPod and it’s music from Ibiza where I live, it’s dance music. The funny thing is I don’t think anything should be a ‘guilty pleasure’. If it’s music you enjoy, why feel you should be ashamed of it? But I’ve got a whole list from ’70s singers/songwriters, Elton John to Cat Stevens, bands like Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie. Are you more popular at home or abroad do you think? The British traditionally eat their own. Look at our football team. The audience responds in different ways depending on the day of the week and the city that you’re in. And you know, I come from England, and London has one of the most reserved audiences in the world. In Brazil, they’re the least controlled, the most amazing audience to play to. So where’s your favourite place to perform? I think Beirut is very special. It’s an amazing mixture of religions and cultures and a fantastic location. People really have a passion for life there. I feel the same about Rio. Your fans do have an intense connection to your songs. Does that ever freak you out? I think it’s amazing! I think you put your heart and soul into songs, and that’s the only reason for doing it. It’s not about posturing or posing, it’s about emotion. But to convey emotion and to put it out there and for other people to in any way connect is really touching. And seeing as I’m not too weird, maybe humans have the same kinds of emotions along the way.

从什么时候队唱歌产生兴趣? 我爸爸小时候会二胡、笛子、小提琴,妈妈越剧。家庭熏陶。小时候也跟 着一起哼哼。初中时候参加比赛,课外活动班,音乐班,音乐老师觉得声 音不错。 17岁离家出走? 参加唱歌比赛,认识一些朋友,正好是高中结束在家的时候(高中没有念 完),他们邀我一起去酒吧唱歌,我说好,拎了个箱子就走了。那时候跟爸 爸过,也没有想太多,就只是想赶快独立,就走了。目标很明确,就是上 台唱歌,没想到一唱就变成了自己的终身事业。 在离家出走的时期印象深刻的事? 要学会更加的独立和勇敢,没有家人在身边,那时候没有高铁,一个大 大的行李箱,自己扛着,以前都是火车,开很久,常常半夜赶路。宿舍,门 窗都是破的,自己也要学会怎么照顾自己。 签滚石? 在Pub唱歌的阶段就认识了很多音乐圈的朋友,他们就会带唱片公司的 人来看我的演出,有一次就正好就被滚石的老板看到,觉得这个小姑娘 不错,听完就把我签下来了。 距《下一站天后》这个目标还有多远? 从来都没有想过要把天后啊,女王啊这些头衔放在自己头上,作为歌手, 最重要的就是能够把好歌跟大家分享,这个才是最重要的。阿妹是我努 力的目标,对音乐的热情,敢于去挑战自己,不断的去突破,Jolin我也非 常欣赏,她非常努力,做这一行你真的要很努力,敢于突破,挑战。

What have you got planned for your Shanghai concert? We’ve been through Taipei, Malaysia, all over... This time we want to bring the warm feeling of love to the concert. Ultimately, our staging, clothing and music will differ a lot from my past concerts. We’ll be playhing some old favourites, the songs that a lot of my fans and friends got to know me through. Hopefully we can create a huge group karaoke session and bring everybody together. With the show being on Valentine’s Day, we started a campaign collecting videos and love announcements from fans before the end of January, so we plan to show some of these too.

How is your new album coming along? It’s half done, hopefully you guys will get to hear it early next year. All of my albums contain love songs, because love songs can connect with different people’s hearts. For this record though, I’ve added some rock elements as part of it as well. Michael Lin is music director, who I’ve worked with before on songs like ‘Cai Bu Tou’ and ‘Bu Shi Ni De Cuo’. When we were initially planning this record, we heard some awesome dance songs, so there may be some of those on the album, but it’s not certain yet. We are really looking forward to putting it all together. How did you first get into music? My Dad started playing the erhu, flute and violin when he was a kid, and my mother sang Shaoxing opera. Naturally this influenced me so when I was young I would sing with them. In junior high school, I participated in singing competitions, after school classes and music classes and my music teacher thought my singing sounded good. You left home at just 17 to pursue your career... I met a lot of people through taking part in singing competitions and though I hadn’t finished high school at that time, they invited me to go to some bars around the country and sing with them. I took a bus and joined them. I mentioned it to my father, but I didn’t think about it too much – I just wanted to be independent so I left. I had a clear goal and that was to sing on stage. I didn’t expect singing to become my lifelong career though. What were the most important things you learned from being away from home at such a young age? You learn to be more independent and brave with no family around you. There was no high-speed train at that time, so I just had a big suitcase, which I had to carry all by myself, and would just sit on the train, often over night. The dormitory, doors and windows were often broken; you learn how to take care of yourself. What made you want to sign with Rock Records? Singing on pub stages, I met a lot of friends from music circles. They would often help invite friends from record company to my shows. Once Rock Records’ boss saw me perform and he thought this little girl sounds good. After an eight second audition, I became a singer for Rock Records. You’re often labelled a diva... As a singer, the most important thing is to share good songs. A Mei is my goal; I admire her enthusiasm for music and the way she dares to challenge herself and always keeps improving herself. I also appreciate Jolin Tsai very much, she is a very hard working person.

Mercedes-Benz Arena Goes Dark for Earth Hour Mercedes-Benz Arena is proud to have joined more than 50 AEG facilities and affiliated venues in a global call to action in support of the environment

On March 29th, 2014, Mercedes-Benz Arena joined millions of people and organizations worldwide in “going dark” for World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, an international event in support of the environment. From 8:30-9:30pm, MercedesBenz Arena turned off all lights in the public area and outdoor area sections of the arena complex, as well as in a part of the commercial retail area as a symbolic call to action to protect our planet. As part of a global Earth Hour campaign organized by AEG 1EARTH, AEG’s industryleading corporate sustainability program, Mercedes-Benz Arena joined more than 50 AEG-affiliated venues in 35 cities, eight countries and four continents across the globe in celebrating its commitment to the environment. To further raise awareness of the critical environmental challenges facing our world, Mercedes-Benz Arena promoted our participation in Earth Hour via our official social media channels including Weibo and WeChat to encourage all followers to post a photo of the arena with blue sky in the background. On the night of the 29th, Starbucks offered a special candle hour for all customers. Fragrant candles sponsored by Zenlifestore made this Earth hour even more romantic and impressive. “It’s a great way for us to take advantage of our position in the community to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire people to take action,” noted Michael Craig Enoch, General Manager of the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Earth Hour is designed to show the power each one

of us has to make a difference and demonstrate the collective strength of these small actions. Earth Hour started in just one city in 2007 and has spread to more than 7,000 cities covering all seven continents. The annual event takes place from 8:30-9:30pm across all time zones and includes countless global landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Empire State Building in New York to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. “Earth Hour is one of many events AEG venues participate in throughout the year to engage our guests and employees in environmental issues,” said John Marler, AEG’s Senior Director of Energy and Environment Systems. “We manage dozens of iconic venues worldwide, from the O2 in London to STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, and Earth Hour is a perfect opportunity for us to leverage their visibility for good.” In 2010, AEG established a set of 2020 environmental performance goals across five issue areas, including energy and climate, water, waste, responsible purchasing, and education.
