“ CICONES


The Cicones, first adventure of Odysseus, lived in the actual Island of Thassos. After leaving Troy, the winds sweep Odysseus and his men to Ismara, city of the Cicones, situated in the coast of Thrace.


There, they plundered the land carried away with greed, until the Cicones turn on them and attack. Fortunately,

they

managed

to

escape, but Odysseus had to go without many of his men, exactly, without 6 of his men per ship.


In some moment, Maron, priest of Apollo

at

Ismaro,

who

was

protected as well as his family by Odysseus from plunder, gave him a very strong sweet wine, which he would use later with Polyphemus.

It seems that this area would correspond to the southern coast of the European part of Turkey and the northern part of Greece. The region before was called Thrace and today there is still a mountain with the name of the supposed city, Ismaro.


Historical Sources It is spoken in "The Odyssey" by Homer. And Estrabon also told us the journey of Odysseus

After doing some research, we have came to the conclusion that there aren't any variants of the myth. The only thing that vary are the little details of the myth.

Characters Odysseus (hero of the Achaeans and protagonist of this myth) found himself together with his companions to land on the lotus eaters island following a storm that lasted 9 days.

The Lotophages (from the lotus, fruit of North Africa) are a mythical people whom Ulysses met during his journey.


Myth

After a long journey accompanied by a storm, Odysseus and his companions landed on the island of the lotus eaters. These welcomed them very well and offered them the sweet fruit of the lotus, their only food which, however, had the characteristic of making people lose their memory, as soon Odysseus as realized the situation had become critical, he had to make a decision that is to leave immediately to prevent everything from happening. the crew, eating lotus, forgot their homeland and wanted to stop in that land.
