SPECIAL THANKS:
a LeTTeR FROM THe PUBLISHeR ?? In 2006, it was suggested I put together a map of goings-on for what was then called “Open House Weekend.” I did. A year later I released an evolved version of that idea, growing the publication from a 1-page black & white photocopy to a bound, 30-someodd-page, slick, color brochure. Here we are 5 years later and I am excited (read: “nervous as hell”) to see my little brochure debut as a full-size magazine with a circulation extending beyond Chinati Weekend.
The new Marfa Gallery Guide Magazine, which I’m calling LIFe + aRT MARFA, or simply “la Marfa”, will distribute year-round in 2 separate editions. Five thousand copies of each edition will circulate the region for 6 full months. As advertising demand dictates, we may decide to expand the circulation and scope of the magazine. But for now, I’m excited about this very small premiere edition and I look forward to partnering with area writers, artists and photographers on future issues. None of this would have happened, of course, without the unbending support of advertisers. Thank you all so much for always jumping at the chance to partner with me on this project. I want to extend additional thanks to Chinati Foundation for so kindly putting up with my toe-stepping; I tip my hat to you and all you do for this community. Check us out for future events.
Finally, with full understanding that there is a great deal of overlap in this statement, thank you to all my friends here in Marfa. Living in a small town is not easy, but you make it worth doing. P.S. - To my awesome little family - Campbell and Marc: I love you both a metric ton.

Allison has long been one of Marfa’s favorite photographers of Marfa. Her keen eye captures our beloved hometown from angles only a blessed few know. A self-described “full time photographer, dog mom and Willie fan” (in that order), Allison shares her adventures via a blog that can be found at www.allisonvsmith.com. She is currently represented by Barry Whistler Gallery (www.barrywhistlergallery.com) and her work can be viewed in Marfa at Marfa Contemporary (www.marfacontemporary.com). In fact, she is part of the first ever show for Marfa Contemporary, running October 6 to December 20, featuring three photographers who love to take aim at Marfa.

INSIDE THE MARFA ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN SYMPOSIUM & HOME TOUR - NOVEMBER 2-4, 2012 Buck Johnston and Laura Hajovsky began with a simple question: how could they take their love for their hometown and build something that would give back to the community while promoting Marfa’s unique character? The answer came in two words: “Design Marfa.”

“We wanted a company name that reflected the many possible creative outlets that Marfa provides,” said Johnston.
Elliott from Oklahoma City. The three speakers will discuss Judd’s influence on their past and current projects in Marfa.
Design Marfa’s first event is the Marfa Architecture + Design Symposium and Home Tour to be held November 2 through 4, 2012. The weekend will showcase a home tour of six Marfa homes and a day-and-a-half symposium structured around the six featured homes. “Marfa is an intersection of art, desert, ranching and culture. It has been written about in the New York Times, Dwell, Elle Décor and Vanity Fair. With each article, the allure has expanded. All this is to say, Marfa has captured the attention and imagination of the world,” Hajovsky said. The symposium includes a line-up of distinguished architects and design professionals, most of which have connections to the architecture and design of structures in Marfa. The symposium will kick off with a session titled “Marfa + Judd + Today.” Panelists include San Antonio’s John Gutzler, Houston’s Carlos Jimenez and Rand
“Judd had a sense of stripping the unnecessary elements off of buildings and letting the true forms appear. He had a simple, more purist approach to architecture,” Gutzler said. Also featured is part-time Marfa resident Barbara Hill, of Barbara Hill Design, a noted designer who has renovated two adobe structures in Marfa to worldwide recognition. Hill will be presenting her Marfa renovations during the Symposium and her current adobe home will be included in the weekend’s Home Tour. Her Marfa home is also included in Nate Berkus’ book, The Things That Matter, out October 16. “My approach is minimalism with juice,” Hill said of her design aesthetic. The symposium is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Crowley Theater in Marfa.

A cocktail party celebrating the event will be held Friday night at the Capri indoor/outdoor event space, part of the Thunderbird Hotel complex. The home tour of six Marfa homes representative of the local vernacular of high desert living are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
ERIKA OSBORNE CHASMS
While the 2012 Design Marfa encompasses the two women’s shared vision to showcase the iconic architecture and home design of the town they both call home, they say it won’t stop there.
and other site specific paintings
“While we are starting with a specific architecture-focused event, we anticipate planning more events with different design themes in the future. We also have visions for a coffee table book,” said Laura. “The possibilities are vast.” Johnston and Hajovsky began their collaboration as members of the Marfa Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and it was there they found their contrasting backgrounds complemented one another. Johnston is an 11-year veteran of Marfa and the owner of two creative businesses, bbgun, which develops websites and Wrong, a retail business selling original works of art and artisan creations. Hajovsky, on the other hand, is a newcomer to the town, living here just shy of two years. She has a background in law and offers operational consulting services through her business Twine Consulting.

“Our friendship turned into a great business relationship” said Laura. “It really is right-brain-meets-left-brain, creative-meets-business, unbridled-spiritmeets-project-management-skills, and in that way, Design Marfa is a perfect archetype of how Marfa operates on the whole.”
The Mowers’ Marfa landscaping.
The two were exploring fundraising opportunities for the Marfa Chamber of Commerce and came up with the idea of a home tour but quickly realized a traditional tour would not be enough to tell the stories of the homes, buildings, artists, architects and designers who make Marfa so special. The 2012 Design Marfa event has designated the Marfa Chamber of Commerce, a self-funded organization, as the event’s first beneficiary. “We are excited about Design Marfa’s inaugural event and look forward to more projects showcasing other aspects of Marfa,” said Hajovsky. “Buck and I feel we are both really lucky to be able to live here, enjoy this beauty year-round and give back to our community.” Visit www.designmarfa.com for details and future events. WILD WOOLIES
From the familiar to the exotic, Wild Woolies offers a range of yarns for every project and skill-level: wool, cotton, alpaca, silk, llama, bamboo silk, buffalo, hand-spun, roving and ribbon from around the world. Also on the shelves are unique gift ideas (like Buffalo Fiber Fedoras!) and activities to get kid’s brains pumping. Publisher’s Note: I’ve been crocheting for most of my life and I can attest that you’d be hard-pressed to find a better yarn shop, attended by an expert of Pam Edwards’ caliber, anywhere. If you’re going to be around town for awhile, check out the class schedule!
VELVET ANTLER
Local jewelry designer Rose Anderson-Lewis recently opened up her own shop in the space which formerly house Fancy Pony Land. She stocks it with her own jewelry and the work of other area artists and artist friends from afar. Publisher’s Note: The two things I hope never go away here are greetings from the faithful shop dog Queenie and the iconic blue wall. It’s the perfect backdrop for Anderson-Lewis’ charming displays.
FREDA
Susannah Lipsey is a renowned designer - Windy Freda www.windyfreda.com - whose headbands have appeared in boutiques from LA to Austin to Brooklyn. Her newest venture, a tiny shop with nondescript signage in the heart of Marfa, features the work of friends and artists who share Lipsey’s on point aesthetic. Publisher’s Note: Go there to find things you cannot find anywhere else - literally - like Roots Rose Radish rose + bergamint lip balms and calendula geranium body butters, blended just for Freda.
HOTEL PAISANO GIFT SHOP
From the high-end women’s clothing department to the Marfa-branded souvenir shop to the housewares to the books, this store has everything. There are great gifts for kids, furniture items, art kits, candles and just about anything else you can think of. Publisher’s Note: I recently went there to purchase books, activities and a colored pencil set to keep my son occupied on a long car ride. Worked like a charm!

WRONG
Everything about this place is so, so, right. Go there to get a hand-carved Camp Bosworth tequila bottle or original photos from the set of “Giant”. While there, pick up a pair of James Dean-approved Levi’s Vintage Collection 501/1955 model with the quintessential 1950s shape. Publisher’s Note: Wrong was recently given a nod in the September 2012 issue of NYLON!
MARTHA HUGHES STUDIO
MOONLIGHT GEMSTONES
This is one of those beautiful Marfa treasures that predates the area renaissance of the last decade. Paul Graybeal and his son Ben Toro create classic Americana jewelry from West Texas agates (their speciality), turquoise, and other semi-precious stones. In addition to jewelry, the shop boasts an enviable collection of rocks, including a number of stunning geodes. Publisher’s Note: Paul and Ben do incredible custom work. Take your vision to them and watch it become a reality! Publisher’s HINT: You get slightly more bang for your buck when you shop in Marfa. While most major cities in Texas have a sales tax rate of 8.25%, Marfa’s is just 8%.

The name Sangregado comes from the Spanish name for the Leather Stem plant. A rugged plant found in the Chihuahuan Desert. Another term for Sangregado is dragon’s blood or Sangre de Drago. The sap or blood from the Leatherstem plant was mixed with powdered minerals such as cinnabar, charcoal and other ingredients to make paint for pictographs by the early Native Americans of the Big Bend. The blood red color of this plant is what you still see in ancient cave art and rock art found all over the Big Bend and the Chihuahua Desert today.
