The RIBA HK Chapter aims to organise a series of annual architecture inspired events reflecting what Hong Kong loves best: EAT!, TALK!, SHOP! and CELEBRATE!. Following the success of SHOP! 2014 and EAT! 2015, RIBA Hong Kong Chapter, in partnership with HoneD and Merci magazine, are delighted to launch our next design competition. Architects and designers across Hong Kong and Asia Pacific are being called to submit the design of a piece of furniture in competition to have the prototype of their creation manufactured, then presented and auctioned off for charity at the main event in December - RIBA Hong Kong Chapter CELEBRATE! 2015 The initiative offers the participating furniture manufacturer the chance to benefit from the unique design skills of architects and designers while experimenting with their creativity. Architects and designers will also gain the opportunity to work on a direct commission with the furniture manufacturer to develop and translate the design into prototype to showcase their design to a wide range of quality design, art and lifestyle exhibitions. We are looking for proposals that respond to the one or a combination of the following themes:
The design concept can be inspired by GREAT British design not only in architecture and related industries such as interior, lighting and landscape design, but also in other creative fields such as fashion, aviation, automotive, graphics, jewellery, culi-
In response to the theme of this year’s Bi-City Biennale in Hong Kong: Vision 2050 - Lifestyle and the City, designers are encouraged to take inspirations from classic design created 35 years ago (or even 70 years ago) and imagine what makes a piece of timeless design that will still be celebrated in 2050, 35 years from now.
The benefit of a piece of furniture that serves two (or more) functions is obvious, especially in a city where living space is at a premium BUT what would it look like? Think “Form follows 2 x Function” - where would it derive its form, and hence aesthetics, from - one of the two functions, or both, or will it create its own?
