Message from Sky Design Awards

Message from Board Advisor (Japan)

2021 was an extremely challenging year for people and businesses all around the world, which were suddenly faced with an invisible threat due to the Coronavirus pandemic and forced to cope with a new normal. It is empowering to see the way humans adapt and transform to deal with new situations.

About the Sky Design Awards (SDA)

The Sky Design Awards was also challenged to work within the boundaries of the new normal, but due to the incredible support of all those involved, we were able to forge ahead and successfully hold the third Sky Design Awards Ceremony and Design Dialogues online. We sincerely thank everyone for your kind understanding, support and patience as we navigated this new landscape. The Sky Design Awards is growing each year and we were delighted to receive many incredible submissions exemplifying sustainable and social impact in the four categories. We continue to be extremely grateful to have some of the most influential industry professionals engage with us through the judging panel and design dialogues. It was evident through our discussions that designers quickly adapted their designs to accommodate the new normal, pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity in areas we never thought we would have to explore.

The Sky Design Award is different from other awards in two important ways. One is that we are creating opportunities for small projects and young designers. This is very important for the next generation. There are a lot of young talented designers in the world, but many don’t encounter opportunities. We can give them hope and opportunities, and lead the next generation of designers on the path forward.

Tomohisa Nagai Founder and Creative Director of TED ASSOCIATES Co, Inc Vice President of JCD (Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association) Book Author: Akinai design (Japan)

The second is that the awards are not just for the recognizing the best designers and their work, but also to promote actual business. For example, job sponsors can select a designer from a shortlist to collaborate with on a design project. Furthermore, in the future SDA hopes to match companies looking for designers, giving as many business opportunities as possible to many designers around the world. We hope to be a catalyst for change in the world through design. SDA is confident that the world can be made a more peaceful and safer place through ‘Design with Love’.

Design in Japan and around the world I am always comparing Japanese design with design from all over the world. It is very interesting to note that Japanese design stands out from the rest of the world. Japanese design is all about stripping away the superfluous and probing relentlessly to the ultimate. In a way it is very similar to the spirit of less is more, but the essence of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in transience and imperfection) exists as the foundation of Japanese Design. The values of Buddhism also have a significant influence on Japanese design.

We look forward to many new exciting submissions and continuing our discussions and collaborations in 2022.

Message from Board Advisor (Hong Kong)

As a member of the Sky Design Awards Board, it is my great pleasure to introduce the 2021 Sky Design Annual Book. Following its successful launch in 2019, Sky Design Awards has continued to attract outstanding architecture, interior design, visual design, and product design submissions from a broad range of global designers. Every year the Sky Design Awards recognizes companies and individuals whose work exemplifies design excellence and delivers meaningful social impact. I invite you to enjoy the projects in this yearbook, which catalogs the best of these works - your work, and thank you for choosing to share these inspiring projects with us.

OEO Studio was founded in 2003 and is based in Copenhagen with a project office in Tokyo, Japan. OEO Studio has created award-winning designs for a broad spectre of discerning clients, from the interiors of Michelin-starred restaurants to aspirational objects that have earned their place in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Design Museum in Copenhagen. Signature to the practice of OEO Studio is their concept of compelling minimalism, which is expressed through an intuitive yet methodical design approach, an inner sense of necessity and enduring quality, and through their particular sensibility to working with materiality and textures through contrast and with meticulous attention to detail.

KITO DESIGN PROJECT Located in central Shikoku, the Kito district of Tokushima Prefecture, which planned this Mirai Convenience Store, boasts Japan’s highest precipitation. This rare area rich in natural beauty has been called the “Tibet of Shikoku”. However, like other rural communities it is evolving into a marginal settlement, where a population of only about 1000 people lives in an area the same size as a Tokyo ward. The private firm KITO DESIGN HOLDINGS has launched a project intended to revive this tiny village of Kito using the power of culture, and the Mirai Convenience Store was built to serve as the hub of this project. This project also includes CAMP PARK KITO, which is already complete, as well as the planned MANGA LIBRARY HOTEL intended to serve as sacred ground for manga fans, and turning a disused school into a facility for hands-on agricultural experiences is also planned. In addition, since there was no supermarket near the village, it was a food desert where people had to drive two hours to go shopping. In considering the future of this settlement, we thought that the place was needed to become a lifeline for the village, and to help raise children and connect villagers with visitors.

14

MIRAI CONVENINENCE STORE The name “Mirai” (“future” in Japanese) was inspired by manga artist Osamu Tezuka’s term for children: “miraijin” (“people of the future”). It reflects the hope that this facility will serve as a place where children in the area can grow and learn. Kito is also the first place in Japan where grafting of yuzu citrus trees has been conducted successfully. To wish dreams for Kito’s future, we designed the architectural structure based on the motif of a yuzu tree. It was constructed by painting a standard three-dimensional truss structure yellow, with the participation of villagers. Reflecting the fact that the area has the highest precipitation in Japan, a broad roof was installed that also shelters the patio, and the exterior walls of glass provide a feel for the natural beauty of the rain and the Kito area—among the most beautiful sights in Japan. All elements are contained in one space under the vast roof, including fixtures at lower heights in consideration of children and seniors, and restrooms and other individual rooms with low ceilings. This vast roof is bathed in warm light, and the place is used everyday to host village events and to live, bringing together under one roof grandmothers and grandfathers, children and their mothers, and travelers from across Japan and around the world. In addition, during the nights here, which are so dark that satellites can be seen, the digital clock counts time in the new age of Kito Village. This convenience store both serves as a lifeline for the people of the area, two hours’ drive from the nearest supermarket, and creates a new future for Kito.

Project Name:

The PolyCuboid

Project Completion Date:

23 November 2019

Project Completed City:

Himeji

Architecture Division:

Commercial, Retail & Office

The PolyCuboid is the new headquarters building for TIA, a company that provides insurance services. The volume is composed by an interlace of three major cuboid shapes creating intersections, voids, and space units. The cuboid’s superposition across each other also allows a richer space syntax including interior and exterior terraces, an atrium, several seating spaces, and a clear yet richer functional distribution of spaces and connections. Bridges also connect the cuboids from inside allowing a dynamic overview of the different spaces. The first floor was shaped by the limits of the site and a ø700mm water pipe that is crossing the site underground limiting foundation space to half the land area. The middle volume stretching from 2nd to 3rd floor extends in cantilevers on both sides allowing the building to gain precious square meters. Functionally, a furnished reception and meeting space together with 6 private desks and an office space occupies the ground floor. The workspace continues the next level with a conference room, CEO’s room and a second office space. This floor is separated into two areas by different floor levels with the lower one dedicated to resting spaces including a kitchen, a table terrace giving on the atrium and a counter space. The third and fourth floors are dedicated to recreation with various spaces such as training room, dining space with a roof terrace and even a piano space giving on the atrium. The staircase stretches from 1st to 4th level along the Atrium, although this last only reaches the third floor. The elevator block, however, is the highest cuboid volume and was cladded in reflective black differently to the white cladding on all other volumes.

A five-storey apartment complex of 14 units was developed for a parcel along a commercial avenue near the entrance to Meguro Fudoson, a Buddhist temple.

To develop a parcel relatively deep with tight frontage in central Tokyo, the main theme for drawing the plan focused on supply of daylight and airflow throughout, while retaining density and thus enhancing rents. In this regard, a void to meet the local ordinance requirement of an evacuation route and additional voids were established.

Important themes based on our Covid-19 experience prompt us to consider inclusion of outdoor space like window views, balconies, rooftops, and courtyards with the structure, and the inclusion of plazas, parks, and other open spaces with the city. This flat complex establishes voids for a deep parcel with poor air passage to the back in order to secure natural ventilation.

The completed building comprises two volumes, front and rear, separated by open corridors installed with stairs ascending to all floors for access to the flats. The four corners of each volume are notched to establish six vertical voids that bring light down into each unit for a heartening indoor environment. The studio flats in this complex arrange their bath areas towards the core of their volume and corridor along an exterior wall. The respective corridors internally connect the six voids as thoroughfares of natural ventilation from the street-front to the back. The one-bedroom flats of the rear volume similarly have bath areas at the core and can be traversed past the entrance and the kitchen space to the living room or bedroom for a layout allowing circular movement around the flat’s entire perimeter. A loft and steps for cats are located in the vicinity of windows facing the voids. The cats can sun themselves and peer outside, while human residents relax in the same space. Overall, the indoor environment provides comfort for human residents and cats.

Although a studio layout was initially requested for the larger flats designed for two occupants, the final plan establishes two mutually separate, comfortable living spaces to be traversed around a full perimeter via corridors. Consequently, separate “meeting” rooms are available if both residents are working at home and provide comfortable work environments without concern over the other’s noise. Moreover, the accommodation for cats supports the “post coronavirus” desire for comfort through pets.

The project is located in Tianjin near the sea. The original building is Tianjin Shipyard. The designer undertakes the overall design work including architectural, landscape, interior and FF&E design. Functions of the interior space are negotiation area and show area.

Historical Significance

Clear Sky

The original building is Tianjin Shipyard with history of one hundred years. It is the milestone in Chinese shipbuilding history and made great contribution to the navigation industry as industry leader of that time. For deep memory of history and respects to the original shipyard, we consider designing this project with the concept of navigator which means a large ship is sailing on the sea.

In the interior space, there appears a simplified and modern profile. Profile with lines of strength create an atmosphere of tough cabin industry. The cloud profile on the ceiling makes people feel that they are under clear sky. Transparent glass brings the sunshine in which echoes with the large ship sailing in the sea, offering special experience and visual impact in both interior and exterior space.

Large Ship of Modern Times

Great Implication

In the original architecture, mock-up and sales office are in two separate buildings. The designer connects the two separate buildings together through a corridor and make them a complete one. We outline the profile of the ship with flow lines and attach the LED light strip based on the profile to present a large ship of modern times with future sense of science and technology. The designer also want to present a pure artistic work with artistic flowlines and a large ship intent with both modern art and historical rudiment. The design rebuilds the sole of the shipyard with flexible and elegant lines.

By modern approach and with reference to the original building of the shipyard, the designer integrates architectural, landscape, interior and FF&E design together and forges a Noah’s Ark of modern times. This implies that in the future the project will lead development of the whole city as a navigator and become the leader of the current industry like the formal Tianjin Shipyard. Driven by the modern science and technology and keeping pace with the times, the project will be a navigator of the industry.

Aesthetic Waterscape Navigator is a large ship sailing on the sea which is closely related to water. With the exterior waterscape, the artistic building looks like a large ship sailing on the sea from afar. LED light strips on the ship refract by the water and form perfect mirror image which adds dreamlike beauty to the space. Combination of architecture and landscape forms the waterscape of modern large ship of future science and technology.

The project is located in Xuanwu District, Nanjing. Nanjing, known as Jinling and Jiankang in ancient times, is the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties as well as one of the four ancient capitals of China. It is also an important birthplace of Chinese civilization and the political, economic and cultural center of southern China.

Project Background

Design Inspiration

Disadvantages: The project base is located in the underground space. One is how to solve the problem of underground lighting and poor landscape, and the other is how to guide people from the ground to the underground club space.

The project base is surrounded by mountains, with natural landscape resources such as Zijin Mountain and Hongshan Forest Zoo. The designer, inspired by the shape of the rolling hills, creates the surficial landscape which extends down to the visual surface of the building. It connects the surficial and underground space. The petal-shaped landscape staircase leads people into the main functional space of the building.

Advantages: The project is located in Xuanwu District, the central city of Nanjing; therefore, the surrounding communities have laid a good foundation for its popularity. In addition, there are underground passages connecting the project base and the surrounding communities, which contribute to a strong accessibility; in the future, there will be an underground station constructed in this area, making the club functions as a transportation hub. Therefore, the positioning of the project is to create an international open community.

Design Strategy The strategy applied in this project is to combine the surficial landscape space and the underground construction, integrating the concept of mountain shapes to create a landscape -style building. In this way, the building’s perception of solidity will be weakened to fully integrate into the urban space. It also reduces the interference of the building to the urban environment and maintains the continuity of the urban landscape space.

Social Impact Indoor settings include: Activity Centre for Kids, Reading Room, Indoor Swimming Pool, Gym, Private Banquet Hall, Coffee bar and other activity areas. For the existence of both outdoor landscape and the indoor space, even though it is relatively limited, people can interact actively in this open and flowing space. We hope that the community centre, as a place for exchanges and gatherings, can promote family relationships and neighbourhood relationships, and become a city node that stimulates public energy.

By making it a simple and clear configuration that only has a “gate- frame” of 8.0m in width, it achieves both well-balanced earthquake resistance performance and a large opening. This “private road” extending like a branch from the main road was stretched around this area, and a unique community was formed respectively. By incorporating the unique locality that is different from each road into the living space as it is, we thought that it would be possible to contribute to regional development as a new climate as a residential area for communities that could be made as a by-product of local industries. In addition to its role as an earthquake-resistant element, the “gate- frame” plays a role as a ruler that gives rhythm to the space by arranging at regular intervals and measures the sense of distance from the city, and by inserting rails into each frame, it is possible to easily make it private according to life for each frame. In order to make effective use of the limited premises as much as possible, it is expected that the life of the resident will gradually ooze out into the area under the large roof by extending the eaves to the front road side and creating an external space continuously. Thanks to the surrounding environment, which was wrapped moderately by chance, we were able to take in the neighboring land including the road as a living space. It is a way of construction which took root in this land made by mixing the demand that the resident requests, the structure form to solve the land, and these.

Architectural Overview

When both “high earthquake resistance” and “open space” are required. Usually, it makes more sense to have a Main space on the second floor because the amount of walls required structurally is less than the first floor.

Location :  Ichinomiya Aichi Japan Principal use : House Structure :  Timber structure Site area : 168.38m2 Building area : 99.12m2 Floor area : 140.21m2

Here, we aim to get the maximum spatial volume in the conditions given by taking in the surrounding environment of the “private road” where the front road is an individual property and planning a space in which the inside and outside are seamlessly continuous.

The prototype of REVZO, a new mid-scale rental office series by a Japanese real estate company, has been completed in Toranomon, Tokyo in June 2020. This office strives to provide a delightful environment where one can connect with the ever-changing “nature” around them, by improving the physical and mental wellbeing of the occupants, and fostering a creative environment.

26

A double-side core configured plan allows for two wide openings, with the street-facing side allowing natural light to penetrate fully into the 17-meter deep tenant workspace. Each floor is equipped with operable windows to allow natural ventilation. A twometer wide balcony with a planting strip is located along the street-facing side. The planting strips will be planted with cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and various color-changing seasonal plants, along with edible plants such as blueberries, lemons, and herbs, creating a people-centric space where tenants can enjoy the seasonal changes and also be involved by harvesting them. A stainless steel mesh along the side of the balcony provides protection for residents and objects from falling and a foothold for plants to grow. An outdoor escape staircase is located at the end of a balcony, which can be used as a de-facto extension of the balcony. Air conditioners are located on one side of the building, blowing horizontally into space which allows for the elimination of ductwork from the ceiling and therefore creating a high ceiling space while keeping the floor to floor height low. Finishes are semi-skeletonized to minimize the amount of waste generated from the construction, which also allows for immediate occupancy and less impact on the global environment. Spaces under the eaves in the front entrance are populated with a variety of wild vegetation such as red pine and agave, arranged in a manner where office workers and people walking by can enjoy the seasonal changes. The entrance vegetation is brought into the interior lobby space, configured alongside earthen walls, mirrors, and display screens showing images of nature. The displays also show the workshops of the furniture in the space. Stairwells connected to the lobby are naturally lit and well ventilated, accompanied by speakers and an art wall on each floor, making it a space where one will want to use the staircase instead of the elevators. On the top floor, there is a communal lounge with a high ceiling, designed with natural materials of earth, wood, and vegetation. Furniture and accessories are labeled with their origins, creating an environment where one can see and feel the craft placed into the furniture.

The base of Kyushu Voice project is located in Dazaifu, the most suitable city for this project, which is the central city of Kyushu both in history and popularity. In Dazaifu was the imperial office governing Kyushu from ancient times to the Heian period. Nowadays, around ten million people visit this historic city every year from home and abroad. In order that the base is the symbol of this project, the most important issue is to show the new Japanese architecture mixing tradition and innovation. Hence, we needed not to build a new building but to select and renovate the building with long history. Then, for the reason of the condition and location in the area, we selected the two-storied wooden old folk house around 100 years old which faced with Kotoriishoji, the tasteful street, and located 2 minutes away from an approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine. In addition, we did the following designing so that this building would show new Japanese architecture and have the function of a shop and the base of community in the area. First, this building had the Japanese traditional tile roof, so we decided to conserve it as an essence of tradition. Additionally, it is located along the tasteful street, so we needed to make its façade acclimated to historic Dazaifu. Therefore, we designed its façade cited from “Kura”, a traditional Japanese warehouse. One of the characters of “Kura” is an element of massive wall of white plaster, and it is also like White cube, which is known as an element of Modernism architecture. Then, we applied its traditional and modern element to its façade design.

Kyushu Voice is a project for promoting good Kyushu products to Japan and the world to revitalize the local economy and culture of the region. This building is a home base of the project and has three purposes that are as a new symbol of Kyushu’s history and nature, as a popular shop to sell fine and various products made in Kyushu, and as a workshop to develop new items with local producers and citizens.

28

Furthermore, we inserted the open columnless space, the element of modernism, into the white massive volume like “Kura”. In order to achieve it, we put wooden gate-shaped frames in a row that evoke Torii, the main gate to shrine. It put the columnless space of 5.5m span into practice and contributed to its structural reinforcement at the same time, and the lighting in the frames created the affordance that led people inside.

Ten years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, an Obori Soma Ware manufacturer Matsunaga Kiln made a fresh start in a new place. Matsunaga Kiln was located in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, producing the designated traditional crafts with more than 300 years of history. Nine years after the earthquake, Namie Town was still designated as a ‘difficult-to-return zone’, so the kiln decided to relocate and started this project.

One proprietary feature of Obori Soma Ware is its double-layered structure, which enables this daily-use ceramics to hold boiling water and prevents it from cooling down. We wanted to incorporate and express this feature in our architecture. A double structure is formed by placing two smaller house forms side by side and surrounding them with a larger house form. A blank space is created in the periphery, an important area that provides heat insulation and light. As a roadside store and studio, we built a conceptual house-type façade to enhance its iconicity. The entire building is lifted 400mm to give the impression of floating lightness. By approaching closer and looking slightly up at the building, you can see a series of house shapes inside as well. Rooms for specific purposes like the potter’s wheel room and the kiln room are put together into the ‘inner houses’, while the rest is left as a blank space to serve as a store or gallery.

The circulation is designed so that guests will be able to see the production process from the gallery store while enjoying the shopping experience. The wooden structure is 7.2 meters wide and columnfree, allowing a variety of layouts. When two different things in terms of scale, architecture and pottery, share the same structure, they will positively influence each other and improve their design strength. Another facility is going to be built behind this building, where visitors can stay and experience pottery-making.

This is a small communication plaza for the industry campus “Nabeya Bi-tech Kaisha” in Seki, Gifu, Japan. About 400 people work in this factory for design, manufacturing and sale of machine elements and components for motion control technology.

This plaza is constructed as connection points from workplace to parking area with the staircases. Before the construction, in the campus there is few spaces to communication with workers outside buildings. Under the garden factory concept by former chairman, this plaza is designed as communication space surrounding with forest. The building next to the plaza has rest space and fitness club, so that the plaza can play a role of communication place for workers. Composition of the plaza is so simple with a curved white concrete bench, wooden decks as a terrace and a table with white punching metal. The shape of bench is curved to receive and hold people to talk and communication there. Foot space of the bench is colored with vivid orange as an end point of main axis of the campus to invite people to come. Width of the bench in backside from main path is wider than in foreside to much relaxative. The table is placed above the bench lightly as fabric scarf with curved punching metal and dark colored structures. In evening time, the plaza was dark because of lack of lighting and surrounding forest. Mainly lighting are equipped only for roads with only cold colored light in the campus. We try to set home space in the factory to communicate between workers with warm lighting. Warm orange colored lighting with the three dimension-curving bench invites you the space as special lighting color in the factory. Layer lighting with table lighting and a lighting with a pole generates depth of the space and impressive space with night activities.

Although situated in the heart of Tokyo, the Yoyogi area retains much of its natural environment. The area is also home to numerous properties belonging to the client who engaged us to design this office building.

Given the site’s visibility from the train station, we opted for a design that incorporates open space on the eastern (station) side to emphasize the abundant natural features of the Yoyogi area. Yoyogi was named after a great fir tree that stood in the area for generations. Our design also sought to create a ‘tree’ that would serve as a local symbol. Borrowing the ‘Y’ from Yoyogi, we created the undulating patterns that give the building its three-dimensional frontage. Combined with the beauty of recurring geometric patterns, these angles capture changes in light in a way that transforms the façade’s appearance according to the season or time of day. To maximize the amount of reflected light captured, the northern face comprises a glass curtain wall with custom-made, ultrathin sashes (45mm) for enhanced transparency. On the south side, we used extruded cement panels and vertical stripes of glass to mitigate direct sunlight, as part of efforts to reduce the building’s environmental impact. The result is a building that offers a different aspect with each façade. We arranged the building’s conference rooms on floors 1 and 2, with floors 3-7 consisting of offices. To accommodate greater foot traffic, an outdoor staircase provides direct access from ground-level to the 2F conference hall. This is part of a design that incorporates smooth flowplanning alongside unique elements that enhance the presence of the building and park. In creating the Yoyogi Central Park plaza on the station side of the building, we sought to provide an opportunity for future developments on adjoining sites. Our design embraces and expands on the image of Yoyogi that has been cultivated by the client.

Here we can see a space, one that could be called a margin, that does not have the purpose of location that it initially suggests, as well as elements that are intuitively perceived to be uneven. These are similar to what we see in certain styles of painting where “one’s relationship to marginal spaces” and “sensory elements” facilitate the power to inspire people’s creativity. In addition to the primitive method of forming space, this is an attempt to capture the wholeness that can be found beyond connecting these seemingly aimless elements, or in other words, an organic state uniquely resulting from being irregular. The concept of the museum is “Experiencing Creation”. By seeing, sensing, and knowing in this space, visitors can experience the creativity of the artworks and artists, which will help to inspire them to explore toward a new era of creativity. The name of the new building, “ARTIZON,” is coined from “ART” and “HORIZON. Making the inside of the museum visible to the outside was a requirement for it to embody a new relationship with art. While this contradicts the basic requirement of not allowing natural light into the exhibition rooms, by creating a space placed between the inside and the outside, and by making the closed spatial volume visible, the aim was to create a museum that is open to the city both visually and sensorily. Of the 23 floors of Museum Tower Kyobashi, the 1st through 6th floors are dedicated to the museum, while the upper three serve as exhibition rooms and the lower half as public spaces such as the entrance, a café, a shop and a lecture room.

The store design for a selected apparel shop STUDIOUS Omotesando, a boutique to introduce Japanese brands to the world. This two-story store is located on a street where several other STUDIOUS stores stand. Attention was given to how the latest trends can be disseminated and how people can be attracted in this area frequented by fashion-conscious people. On the first floor of the fully-glazed building, there is a stage right at the entrance to hold events such as a limited-time pop-up store. Glass and hollow polycarbonate sheets were selected as the primary materials to design a transparent and open-plan space. The steps to the stage and the base of clothes racks are made of laminated glass plates of 15mm thick, and a large light fixture installed on the ceiling is a combination of LED tubes and hollow polycarbonate boards. At the top of the stairs along the wall coated with special gold-color paint, a more serene space unfolds. On the second floor, a large semi-circular pillar with displays stands in the center, where strips of a white ceiling surface and a carpet spread out. The school building is designed with delicate details. Not only western-style elements such as Spanish tiles, arched windows and double-width tiles, but also decorative haunch beams, wooden spandrel wall and mosaic tile finish stairs inside. While paying the utmost respect to the western architecture and its historical interior space, we intended to blend nostalgia and newness. In order to outstand the historical details such as corridors, beams and stairs, we selected discreet inorganic, black and white and semi-glossy materials. We redesign the former auditorium and gymnasium, where school children used to run around, into a restaurant and spa. Furthermore, we reborn the former roof of the school building where overlooking Kyoto city as the significant rooftop bar of the hotel. Guests can imagine the old times by enjoying the same scenery of Yasaka Pagoda, beautiful mountain and city of Kyoto, which the former school children used to see. Other than that, we realized the concept of ‘Imprint the memories and connect to the future’ by placing artworks that relates to Kyoto and the former elementary school everywhere in the school building, and also creating a space where guests enable to view the photographs and materials related to the time and the records of its construction. The assemblance of spaces reburned with different stories based on memories successfully creates a ‘heritage hotel’ where history, region and architecture reverberates with each other.

The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu is the conversion project that aimed to inherit, harmonize with surrounding environment and re-recognize the Japanese beauty of former Kiyomizu Elementary School, which has 90 years of history remained in Kyoto, into a 4 stories hotel with total floor area of approximately 6,800 square meters.

We strongly believe that this project plays a significant role to think about what kind of future we can leave for future children in order to transmit Japanese culture and to inherit its sociality and regionality, like current children pass on to the next generation when they become parents.

The hotel is in the mountain side with great view, located in the district where has a number of historical sites including important cultural assets of Kyoto Higashiyama where has been nurtured by eternal history. It was named with the combination of two elements: ‘Kyoto Kiyomizu’, one of the world-famous tourist destination, and ‘Seiryu’ which has been believed as a guardian god of Higashiyama region, aiming to transmit this one-and-only hotel that takes advantage of the characteristics of this region and historically valuable former elementary school to the world.

Not only the original design of the entrance stands out in the quiet residence area in Aoyama and caught people’s attention, but it also functions as outside seating for their customers. To emphasize the linear design, the dark grey tiles run from the terrace to the end of the store, and it makes the store look deeper and the terrace roof inspired by the wisteria arbor more dynamic. We kept the interior minimum and simple to make their products stand out and carefully plan the lighting to make the space bright enough but not too plain and boring by creating contrast of light.

The project is located in the southern section of Tianfu Avenue in Chengdu. It is a development and exhibition area in the California Smart City. The California Smart City will focus on clean energy as its main industrial chain to create a smart city covering the new and clean generation of information technology.

The designer takes the two elements of “water” and “light” as the themes, allowing nature and technology to collide to re-establish the emotional connection between man and nature. The function of this project is positioned as a development display space for the community. Divided into two floors, the project has the reception and display area on the first floor, the sand table model display area, the conversation area and the construction method display area on the second floor.

The continuity design of the space avoids a large number of wall divisions and provides a good place for temporary display in the space. The natural lighting from the ceiling in the sand table area allows sunlight into the bottom space, and the design of natural opening windows uses natural convection to inhale fresh air into the room while saving energy.

Light cube The light cube art installation in front of the entrance of the lobby hangs over the water, staggered high and low. The cube is made of acrylic material and endowed with lighting. The building seems to be floating on the water surface, connected by light cubes, shaping the image of the future city of science and technologies.

Fluid space The curved wall resembles the ripples produced by the flow of curved water, which has the energy to form a dynamic vision, creating a “fluid” spatial form. Through the plastic and smooth lines, a continuous facade shape and the continuity of spatial circulation are created. The staircase is hidden in the natural and smooth facade; connecting the upper and lower floors.

MeeHotel is a new urban resort hotel in the city of Shenzhen, China aims to give business travelers a peaceful state. The project location is called “Bamboo Forest”, so we naturally generate our story from this name.

Starting from the lobby space, bamboo was selected as the key material to let customers enter the lobby space and greeted by sophisticated light and shadow effect on the main wall. Various on-site tests & experiments with traditional bamboo weaver were done to create full height screens to define reception and lobby lounge area. Pitched roof ceiling and natural diatom mud finished walls overlay by articulated light and shadow effects provide a minimal and leisure experience for the entire space. Double height central courtyards were introduced in every two guest-room floors. A reflective lake with bamboo installation of dancing curves that falls naturally, as if clouds are floating in the air. This ceiling hung structure was again in consultation with the master of the bamboo weaving on how to create the curves by making use of its natural elasticity and traditional connection method. Guests will feel like passing through an abstract bamboo forest before arriving at their rooms. On the top floor Sky Café, a zen and church-like space were constructed by full height bamboo structure. Skylight above allows natural light fall in the middle of the seating area during daytime. Ceiling suspended circular LED lights formed endless glowing moons and provides guests a poetic experience during nighttime.

The bamboo and rattan applied in all guestroom headboards are in the same pattern as those in the lobby but with different widths and thickness. Floated by concealed lights, it aims to provide guests a peaceful environment and an elegant atmosphere. We hope that this is not just another boutique hotel project, by adding the layer of traditional culture, this hotel space can provide a relaxing and comfortable journey in a more meaningful way. In celebration of the unique quality of bamboo, from the architectural to the interior level, we can continue to promote and allow business travelers to appreciate the beauty of traditional handicraft that we should have ignored. It can ultimately form aesthetic, functional, and cultural enhancement in our busy urban life.

Background/Concept

mot. Conference

“mot.” stands for Mitsui Office for Tomorrow which is a facility and service for tenant workers that develops in the center of the city as “A place to make your “more” to bloom”. In Otemachi One which is a large office complex in Tokyo’s Otemachi, the project’s goal is “From WORK to WORK WELLNESS,” and it provides a multipurpose space for activities such as working, dining, taking a break, meeting up with others, and leisure. Based on the PATCHWORK concept, we aims to realize WORK WELLNESS through a patchwork of diverse activities, arranged along the axis of working.

Expressing diverse color schemes based on the theme of nature, reflecting the WORK WELLNESS approach, we designed this space. Specifically, each rental meeting room is themed on clouds, rain, sunlight through the trees, sunshine, or blue skies, while designs of rooms for brainstorming and other creative activities evoke clouds, connecting the activities in the rooms to their design themes.

How to make PATCHWORK We used the following three specific PATCHWORK design methods. First, a patchwork of materials was used to combine different materials and transform the appeal of the same materials by expressing them in different ways. The second patchwork method is one of connecting places, using frames and lines to serve as threads linking diverse places. Thirdly, a patchwork was created to integrate the whole, delivering one space with different designs for different activities, using distinctive ceilings and lightings. This facility consists of the three main areas of Dining, Conference, and Fitness. A PATCHWORK space was created by linking together elements from the functions of each area, grouped by activities and design theme: workers will want.

mot. Fitness The design approach to this fitness center close to workplace uses objets d’art, lights, and natural elements for contrasting activities, including physical activities and relaxation of the body and mind. These elements both branch off and intertwine along the unrestrained frames of PATCHWORK. In the gym area, the frame transforms to lines, evoking full size athletic tracks and basketball courts, to inspire athletic activities. The PATCHWORK concept realizes “from WORK to WORK WELLNESS”, advancing a new form for a leased office complex.

mot. Dining This area is used for not only dining but also coworking and events. For this reason, it is gently partitioned on “frames” of diverse activities, such as reading, lounging, meetings, and parties. Emotional elements such as art, greenery, recordings, and lights are incorporated into this “frames”, blending into one together space with diverse activities. The art works also reflect approaches to diverse social topics, from the avant garde to outsider art.

Description Situated within Nikko’s National Park with its beautiful landscapes born from volcanic activity and shoreline of Lake Chuzenji, in a neighborhood that has been the summer residence of foreign dignitaries since Japan’s Meiji period sits The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko. The design theme follows the flow of time and history of the site. The rugged landscape, lush greenery and flowing water, combined with the traditional architecture of Nikko’s Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples; provides a dignified enigmatic atmosphere, a place suitable for Ritz-Carlton’s first onsen (hot spring) facility. The concept is “Dignified Tranquility”. The peaceful onsen against the harsh landscape brings a sense of serenity and allows guests an experience of purifying their mind and body by the energy of the earth. We have put together a story to convey this experience, creating a story with key words for each area.

Entrance Approach 「誘」“Inviting” The trip to enjoy the experience of the high-quality Japanese onsen in the land of Nikko begins when guests pass through the cut-like approach. The act of bending slightly when passing under the noren curtain is a sign of respect at the entrance to a room as guests proceed inside. 「整」“Relief” After a moment of respite and once settled and relaxed, guests proceed to the onsen where they may enjoy the natural hot springs, savoring the peaceful atmosphere.

「音」“Sound of gentle streams” The gentle sound of hot water quietly shimmering down leaf decorations. Overflowing hot spring water in a large space echoing the sounds of gently moving water.

「薫」“Sensing” A private bath where guests can spend time in meditative solitude, allows an experience of serene relaxation in a tranquil space. 「静」“Tranquility” Immersion in the mysterious white volcanic water. The ultimate quiet luxury. 「寛」“Relaxing” The time spent after being in the onsen, time spent leisurely and gently allows an experience of relaxation of mind and body. Spa Treatment Zone 「浄」“Purification” A unique treatment offer, the pleasures of bathing deep within the forest and in the purifying silence of nature.

The artwork throughout the space was carefully curated by an artist, the works evoke feelings of the primal forces of life. The detail and fittings of the treatment room were carved by a local shrine and temple craftsman, who were also in charge of the carvings for the Nikko Toshogu temple woodwork. This provides an authentic onsen experience that stimulates an even higher quality of time for treatments.

Onsen 「清」“Purifying” An intense, sacred experience of stepping forward into a new space. Guests can experience the pleasures of Kake-yu, pouring natural spring water over themselves to purify their mind, cleanse their body, and to warm themselves before stepping into the hot bath.

The project is a private museum of dried fish maws (also known as swim bladders), which is located in Shoutou City, China. The client has been interested in collecting aged fish maws for several decades. With a view to communicating the culture and value of fish maws, he entrusted JINGU PHOENIX SPACE PLANNING ORGANIZATION to create a neat space for displaying his collection.

The designers deconstructed the spatial functions via architectural languages, and adopted gray as the main hue, so as to highlight the gold aged fish maws that carry the memories of time. In addition, they utilized old oak timber and gave it sawtooth grain through special treatment. The aged texture and color of oak wood coincide with those of fish maws, which generates dialogue between the materials and the collection. An arched door opening guides visitors to enter the interior space and start the journey of exploring fish maw culture. Opposite to the entrance is a fishshaped iron art installation, which is handmade by artists and hung in the air, seeming to tell the history of fish maws. In the double-height hollow space, the original concrete beam is exposed and penetrated by a wooden strip that is embellished with bulbs, thereby enhancing structural aesthetic and functionality as well. The first and second floors are connected by a staircase, which is formed by oak wood featuring sawtooth grain. There is a reception hall on 1F, in which all the furniture is made of oak wood, to ensure an austere texture within the space. At the other side of the first floor, a large glass door opens up the space for showcasing the client’s collected fish maws, where an abstract painting themed on human and fish attracts visitors to immerse themselves in the display space. The designers applied various straight and oblique structural shapes, to create the overall visiting circulation. The concave form of exhibits, the museum-like display, as well as rigorous lighting

design, all help to accentuate the shape and texture of each piece of fish maw. As the natural light filtering into the space, the interior surfaces finished with white paint produce interplay of light and shadows. The display and reception areas provide space for multiple people to communicate. Various combinations of furniture, as well as the bubble-like lamps that symbolize “the water of life”, together create balance and artistic conception in the space, rendering it artistic and conformable.

“Tokyo Gift Palette” is a shopping compound made of recycled material from Shinkansen, the High-speed rail vehicle body. For the first time in history, recycled Shinkansen car material is used in a commercial facility building. Precisely, the aluminum from cars that retired in year 2020, is given a new life at Tokyo Gift Palette. 33 stores make up Tokyo Gift Palette, where the some of the best souvenirs can be found, conveniently located within the historical Tokyo station. It is at the center of all transportation lines in Tokyo, thus the environmental axis of design is developed surrounding the concept, ‘Innovation of Tradition’. “Noren” is a curtain-like exterior decoration which has been a popular tradition in Japanese history, as a shop facade. We employed the recycled aluminum from Shinkansen High Speed Rail to re-create this facade in all main passages of the facility. Here, the “Noren” spans 130 meters and more, expressing its dynamic presence. In addition, original pattern graphic of cherry blossom named “Sakura Petals” is used throughout the design to create recognition that suits the history of its location. By recycling top quality material unique to High Speed rail 700 series, we created a design that speak to a new frontier of quality and time. Tokyo Gift Palette is a highly-valued transportation hub that connects people’s passion for Shinkansen and sustainability.

The client of this project are couples in their 40s, and the two who love Japanese style look forward to stay at this residence on weekends after finishing a busy daily life, that is away from the city’s hustle and bustle and enjoying the private weekend time. In this project, the original intention of the Japanese Zen style, which the client loves, was used as a starting point. Afterwards, the unique minimalist taste was slowly injected into a collision of styles. The rough material was used as a contrast for the smooth Japanese style, adding a contrast to the stylish modern Industrial Zen style. At the end of the open space, a very industrial-style galvanized steel plate is used as the finishing touch, and the wall on the end view is dotted with a small area of totem tiles on the kitchen wall, so that there are still a lot of interesting highlights in the large area of blank walls. The primary color of the ceiling has been the emphasis of this project, and the floor is chosen to make a contrast by using a simple plain Pandomo, through the richness and simplicity of the ceiling above and the floor below to reach a balanced vision. Because the elevated space has ventilation features, and there are large courtyards at the front and next to the project, the design team and the client are looking forward to making this space into an air-con free environment by maximizing the use of the natural air circulation. With the goal of energy conservation and sustainability, in order to meet the delicate Japanese style and industrial minimalist style, the design team and the client agreed to find a ceiling fan for air circulation. The pure black Boffi ceiling fan hanging from the ceiling is to incorporate the client’s expectations of the Japanese-style Zen space into Italian minimalist industrial aesthetics to create a new modern Zen residence with a sustainable environment.

The purpose of this case is to create a place for young, dynamic youth. The industrial style expected by the residents is complemented by modern systematic kitchen utensils, sophisticated furniture, and simple decorations. By combining all the elements together, the designer would like to meet the clients’ expectation as a high-end industrial style space and a place where is suitable for living. It is worth mentioning that the beam above the entry of the original construction was very low. The designer considered that if the ceiling is designed according to this height, the occupants will feel excessively oppressed. Therefore, when designing the ceiling, the designer used the galvanized steel plate material to make the right side of the beam column directly raise upwards so that the lines of the ceiling would not be blocked by the beam, and the view of the house would be more high and wide. Since the ceiling was in a natural state as remaining the original features of the building, the designer buried most of the lighting in the corners and both sides of the structure with a few part of the wall fitting was used as mends light. Even if the track lights were used in the interior of the house, the designer asked the mechanical and electrical construction to make sure that the circuit can be accurately hidden directly above lighting fixtures. Although it is a space for chasing dream for a single man, the designer has specially left a room that can be separated in no time, which is expected to be used as a reserved space for new family members. On the track of the transparent sliding door, the designer saving a track that can hang a curtain as a cover. Nevertheless, the considerate design can be utilized because the young homeowner got married recently. In the near future, when their child is born, there will still be enough private space for the child to use. As we are in a bustling city, the greenery is required which can not only clear your mind but also keep the air fresh so that the designer left a lot of spaces such as the platform above the counter in the kitchen and the one next to the window as an area where you can place plants.

VVG Lifestyle Village is located in Nanjing One Mall, a green urban complex that features humanism and high quality of life, and is operated by Walsin (Nanjing) Development Co.,Ltd, a Taiwanese real estate developer. To echo the overall design theme of the mall; Ocean, Nebula and Earth, are harnessed via the spatial characteristics of the large three-floor atrium. We produced a forest to demonstrate the flow of people’s interactions, a place where people can meet and connect, just like one would find throughout nature while observing how animals communicate in the wild. Giant lattice panels also express foliage and are placed in thirty-five consecutive rows, which shift its shapes into expansive arches within the vaulted ceiling and blanket the entire space. By randomly placing lighting fixtures featuring Taiwan’s national plum flower, such rhythm of regularity and irregularity makes the VVG forest. unique, combining Japanese and Taiwanese design characteristics. The motif of branches, leaves and bark were adapted as graphics on originally designed and produced 300mm square tiles that are irregularly installed on the floor. As a result, the unity in design as the whole, is reinforced by the scattered nature motifs throughout the space. Leaves found within the lattice panels utilize their veins to exhibit the letters “VVG”, which illustrates some of the playful and lively touches unique to the Village, demonstrating precise adjustments to the symmetrical spatial composition. The Village is designed to guide visitors into the space, gradually showcasing the entire ambiance making them wander into a forest, with sunbeams streaming through the leaves only in this soaring lobby area. "SOSO coffee" is located on the first floor of a condominium in Hochiminh City, Vietnam. It is located in a housing development area where many wealthy Vietnamese and foreigners live. The client, a Vietnamese owner, loved Japan so much. All she requested was a Japanese-style and elegant space, and the rest was left to me. However, I understood that it is the client’s request to focus on the spirituality of the Japanese people and the beauty of the spatial expression based on it, rather than the so-called “Japanese style”.

The name of the store, SOSO, is derived from the Japanese word “楚々(SOSO)”, which means pure, beautiful and delicate. That’s why I decided to imagine and assemble a Japanese space that fits the word. The store is about 40 m2 excluding the toilet and stairs, which is not so large. To secure the number of seats effectively, it is common practice to place the counter near the wall and use the rest as customer seats. However, instead of focusing solely on efficiency, I thought that a spacious and laid-back space like the Saigon River flowing nearby would be more suitable here. Therefore, I decided to place a large oval counter in the center of the cafe and place a table in the extra space around it. When a visitor enters the store, he first places an order through the counter, which approaches the entrance, and from there, they naturally move left and right along the oval to be seated.

On the bench along the wall, logs with skin integrated with the table are lined up like a grove, and the legs are supported by brass cylinders to give a clean and sharp impression. Brass, which is still shining now, should become more astringent and familiar with the space over time. The tape light fitted in the log emits light toward the wall, and the reflected light gently illuminates the inside of the store. The wood used for the furniture and walls is painted in four different colors: white, gray, brown, and black, with a thin coat of paint to show the wood’s grain and preserve the expression of the wood. The ceiling is covered with panels with innumerable holes randomly drilled. The faint light that leaks from the hole makes the store look like it is surrounded by white snow, and at night it looks like a starry sky. It became a space with different facial expressions throughout the day.

The counter is integrally molded with cast-in-place concrete. Only the side surface is sharpened to expose the crushed stone of the aggregate, and the finish is separated by the edge with the top plate surface. By giving concrete a careful finish like applying it to furniture, it has come to have a new look from the original strength and rough look of concrete.

A work on the meeting area at the newly relocated Fuji Xerox’s headquarters. While maintaining essential functions of meeting and showroom, we have experimented an open design concept to showcase of an ideal future workplace, resulted in a theme - agility of variability space. The concept Agility comes from Fuji Xerox’s business strategy. We hope that our solution can serve as a sample answer to the era of VUCA on how we respond to the needs and goal of businesses. The area is architected to build with fixtures that are all mobile, including the walls, enabling the space highly agile to accommodate needs of business discussion. There are seven of movable fixtures set out, which can be placed and arranged day by day, to suit the purpose of the meetings as well as good use of furniture characteristics. Partition panel varies in its design for the visibility levels, from complete block out to 50% viewability, whose overlaps creates uniquely additional depth in transparency. To compliment the zoning, we have coloring of floor and ceiling, providing a sense of boundary. To solve a challenge of noise, we have deployed sound masking system by ambient background, reducing distraction as well as speech privacy, while improving workplace vibrant acoustics. Beneath the floor is a set of power supply layout with optimal flexibility and versatility for any changes necessary in the future. Pursuing a variable and movable space was a significant agenda for us in meeting organically controlled spatial functions without walls.

The designer uses the scenery of the Qiantang River as the body of this project, and it is also the source of inspiration for the design, showing the ecology Quiet spiritual space. Wired glass screens are arranged in an array, and the semi-transparent texture gives the space a sense of lightness and transparency. Through the glass screen, the concept is strikingly presented in a spherical shape. The audio-visual room presents the shape of the spaceship in space, creating a surreal and creative concept space.

The concept is “ESSENCE OF LIGHT”, and the basin and natural stones are arranged so that you can feel the quiet appearance, sunlight, and gentle breeze by the sequence of light. The art and materials placed in various places are also created with the image of the concept. In the main hall with a high sky, a symbolic form was created by the design of the crossed wooden lattice with the motif of a Japanese umbrella on the ceiling. The sunlight leaking from that form creates various fleeting forms, and you can feel the beautiful light that matches the movement of your line of sight.

Rebirth of Shanghai Times Square, a retail podium of total 53,200 square meters in Pudong, owned by China Resources Land Limited. The redevelopment has resulted in multiplelevel of design elements reminiscent of a theatre across nine floors and two basement level. It provides a whole experience that similar to a big theater greets you as you step upstairs through a space like a ticket booth or a foyer.

The original mall building had been much rebuilt and expanded upon, resulting in zigzagging traffic lines and exceedingly poor visibility through the building. While there were many atriums, their shapes were not contributing to the sense of connection with the upper floors. The central ground floor passage has now been straightened and opened up by cleverly rearranging the atriums and elevators have been relocated. This way, the upper floors have become visible to shoppers on the ground floor and hopefully lure them upstairs. The redevelopment has resulted in a layout which resembles a theatre, featuring different levels with different functions and facilities. Screens made of aluminum pipes were inspired by stage curtains draping over the building façade and atrium. An image mirroring the draping design was also applied on the main pillars and stone wall finish. An arch-shaped motif frames the front of a stage, the proscenium arch, and is actively applied to partitions, furniture, and even lighting in anticipation of an added softness and intimacy to the space. Box seating break areas protruding out to the atrium and a royal box-like VIP lounge were also added. From the food court evocative of a piano keyboard to a sundry shop floor with a spotlight motif, the interior is accordingly dotted with multiple design elements reminiscent of a theatre.

Theatres are usually designed so that the stage can be seen clearly from any seat, but the staircase here is also designed in consideration of the passing line of sight, and has succeeded in creating a high level of excursion that naturally attracts shoppers to the upper floors. In addition, visitors can feel as one of the actors on stage, appreciating numerous brands, products, and events at variety of rest spaces, POPUP/EVENT areas facing the atrium, which promote their experiential quality as well as longer stay time.

For its first created office since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge that the cram school chain Matsuo Gakuin was facing is to come up with a permanent design solution for protecting the office users while keeping the aesthetic values the company has always cherished.

A thunder shaped table runs along the office dividing the space into two separate entities: the staff and the guest areas. The same shape was doubled and hanged from the ceiling. Standard 500mm wide glass panels were sandwiched between the two boards. The glass panels run alternatively through two parallel lines separated by 20cm space. This glass disposition not only protects from the droplets while having a conversation, but also prevents the stagnation of the air between the glasses, and yet allows to pass through the contracts and other documents between the users on both sides. Furthermore, the table was covered using a special anti-viral veneer. A rear-projection film was applied to the glass at the end part of the board. With the help of an installed video projector, a remote member can perform a virtual meeting with the guests visiting the office the same way a present staff would perform the task.

LINE YOTSUYA is a new office project of LINE Corporation, which develops and drives the expansion of its IT services. In this project, we aimed to design an office that embodies “LINE STYLE: WOW = No.1,” which is LINE’s way of working, and the company’s “second stage of development,” in which it challenges itself to succeed in new business areas. We also aimed to create a work environment that embraces the new normal created by COVID-19, which began when the project was already in progress and has now changed society in many ways.

To this end, we chose “flexibility” as our main theme for the project. For example, we minimized the number of objects that have to be secured in place so that the office can quickly adapt to structural changes in the company, office relocations, and various social situations. Portable furniture, demountable partitions, and custom furniture with multifunctional modules are only some of the things we have planned in detail. They provide uniformity in style while being able to change their function when necessary. For example, we used one piece of custom furniture to form the basic component of high tables, display stands, and trash can storage spaces.

We also designed the office to be a place where ideas are born, so that LINE can continue to take on new challenges. Specifically, we created a work environment that enables constant input and output of ideas by incorporating the following keywords in our design concept: movable (can freely move furniture and change layout), writable (can readily write down ideas on a wall or table), and discoverable (can discover new hints from someone else’s ideas). By including the concept of “change” in our project, we have designed an office that fosters the mindset to embrace challenges.

Furthermore, simple wooden furniture—which can also serve as partitions—can be combined with their desk and stool units in different ways depending on how employees like to use them. At the reception, we offer fun ways to entertain our guests such as by displaying our company’s services on a counter and projecting promotional videos onto a glass partition. The adjacent cafe has been designed in consistency with the rest of the office using the same furniture modules. Therefore, the cafe area can be used as a large space for events after removing the glass partitions.

While blessed with the best resources, it should also bear the social responsibility that goes with it. Favorable resources produce radiating effects, which requires the design project to accommodate diverse sides of elements to meet the public expectation, including elements in technology, culture, arts, business, etc. It is more than a project, but reflects the soul of a metropolis. The idea behind this project is to inspire people’s desire for both happiness and ideal. We put the totem from Inception into the space, making the space a situation where one shuttles between reality and dream. Space is folded here, so the spatial orientation of the field we created is pluralistic. This work represents the philosophical thinking of time and space. What we want to convey is the final inspection of urban people in the space. The lighting device and art installation of this project are full of highlights. We are giving these installations not only design, not only art and culture. For example, through light programming and glass refraction, the rhythmic multimedia art installation gives off a brilliant and rational form of light, which, combined with the most pristine natural objects, creates values of nature and futurism. The gyro represents the relationship between indicators, and the folding of time and space. In a multi-dimensional space-time situation, the gyro helps people in it identify the orientation of time and space.

The materials adopted include mirror stainless steel, art glass, imported fabrics, imported acrylic, imported rock plate, etc., to deliver a sense of modernity and high technology, and when combined with a dazzling design, they present a feeling of floating reflections.

The reinforcement of gyro hoisting, the reinforcement of light wall, the research and development of styling, the quality control of blowing process, and the presentation of curve shape all posed great difficulties in the construction process. The flowing presentation before the viewers is the result of several months’ adjustment and coordination with the construction team.

A cinema is like a dimension door to the virtual world. How to blur the boundary between reality and virtual is the key point to consider in the design of cinema space. Oft Interiors, a Hong Kong design firm, specializes in combining business thinking and visual culture, and is dedicated to creating “scene-based consumption experiences” for commercial spaces. The theme of the design is “Microcosm in the Magnifying Glass”. Through imagining about the threedimensional city in two dimensions, the designers deconstructs the pixels of different sizes and reshapes the space inside the screen in a new scale. They believe that we live in a world where electronic screens are everywhere, and if this world is made up of electronic screens, then we are the tiny pixels that make up this world. Because each individual is different, the world becomes more tridimensional and vivid. In this magnified microscopic world, the once flat pixel grid has become a three-dimensional pixel column, where we could only observe the surface in the past, but now we can see the whole picture. In addition to creating a pixel world with immersive experience, the designers also re-planned the layout in terms of movement according to the business logic of the cinema, changing the original entrance of street to enter from the mall to realize the mutual diversion between the mall and the cinema; at the same time, the main entrance and ticketing area were moved to the second floor, and the first floor was used as the sales area, which is an important profit structure of the cinema.

The main concept of this project is integration of arts and life; on the one hand, it shows the living style of the client, on the other hand, it also broadens its aesthetics and adding an elegant life to the original excellent geographical environment. The outdoor natural scenery and the artificial nature that was created by the marble wall enrich the aesthetics of the house; and the progressive spatial planning, from the entrance, guest room, dining room, kitchen, reading area, bedroom, is not only for the sake of the artwork, but also the smooth and comfortable environment in order to create an exquisite and delicate space. The design team carefully considered the client’s appropriate understanding of living space, and proposed the most optimized solution. The actual layout is defined by 1:1 ratio space simulation, allowing the users to feel the true space scale. Moreover, the designers presented all the healthy and environmentally friendly building materials which are scheduled to be used on the site, and a sample wall was made to communicate with the clients accurately. The design not only emphasizes the traffic flow and functions, but also pays special attention to building materials that are non-toxic and harmless to the body, and insists on creating a healthy and comfortable living environment. Based on the belief of sustainable coexistence and caring for the earth-sunlight, air, and water are the most important requirements for the indoor environment. The space is divided by moving lines and then used continuously. It not only presents the best natural lighting and ventilation functions, but also reduces the use of artificial light, achieving energy saving and carbon reduction. Coupled with the water purification equipment system, it provides healthier and purer water supply for the residence. The designer further applies durable and natural building materials to reduce waste resources, and achieve the design principles of environmental protection and nature.

Store design for the cosmetic brand SHIRO, which offers products made from natural ingredients. The store occupies a long and narrow space of 19 meters wide and 1.3 meters deep, facing a common corridor in a shopping mall located in Tamagawa, Tokyo. The aim of this design was to create a space with a sense of openness and comfort inspired by the town with abundant nature and a relaxed atmosphere.

Taking advantage of the wide frontage, we placed a single large white counter along the common corridor. The display area, product shelves, cash register functions, and storage are consolidated within the counter, whose base is recessed to achieve a simple, floating design. The flat end of the 3.7-meter-long cantilevered countertop accentuates the relaxed impression of the store. For the counter and the walls, two different plaster materials were applied to create different textures. The aggregates of the wall were scraped off in a halfdry state to create an uneven surface with delicate shades. Meanwhile, the counter was carefully polished by hand to create a smooth texture, accentuating the simple design of the products. This space expresses SHIRO’s passion for harnessing the blessings of nature as it is in its products.

Supership Holdings, an IT company, has set up an office where around 1,000 people work. The concept of this office space is “a town.” The essential motif working as a mechanism for the town-inspired design is the alley. The huge office space is purposefully dotted with necessary functions such as meeting rooms and locker spaces, around which flow lines are arranged just like alleys of a town, thus achieving a circuit style layout. This layout, characterized by alleys for strolling around, is the key to the mechanism that generates random encounters between workers and the creation of astonishing ideas. Based on the town concept, this office space includes areas and furnishings designed to express other various motifs such as communities, ports, caves and hills, so that the workers can realize autonomous workstyles in locations of their choice. These features are realized by careful examination of scale that can stimulate physical sensations through, for example, lifting the floor, lowering the ceiling, and narrowing or widening the aisles. In addition to space designers, eight graffiti artists and sculptors participated in creating the office design, displaying art all around the office and providing the workers with a rich sequence as if you are encountering street art while strolling around the city.

has expanded to the current business of savings and insurance. That is, the mission of “Connecting” is the origin of all the services they offer. Thus, this entrance is designed with the aim of expressing various “Connections”, such as those among people, those between people and communities, and those from the past to the future. While it follows Japanese traditional architectural theories, new materials are used so that it can strongly express a connection to the future. The use of various kinds of reflective materials gives the narrow entrance space a sense of depth and breadth generated further when compared to the actual dimensions, successfully expressing the connection between the inside and outside of the company as a corporate mission. Two dichroic mirrors that change color when viewed from different angles have a double mirror effect on the lights on the ceiling and the graphic patterns on the floor when they are squared with each other, creating many intersections. When people move in the space, the lighting changes color at random, showing a wide variety of expressions, changing moment to moment just like nature. The lattice ceiling features a combination of different materials, making use of wood and hot-dip galvanized steel, giving the appearance of being endless.

Representing the Japan Post Group’s mission of “Connecting” that has been pursued since its founding in 1871, the new entrance space for the Japan Post Real Estate head office was designed with the concept of ‘intersection”. Japan Post Real Estate, Co., Ltd. is a new company founded in April 2018, and is one of the pillars in the Japan Post Group start-up business.

It aims at making effective use of the land, buildings and networks owned by the Group, including former post office sites, and exploring new territory in order to contribute to regional development and the growth of Japan. The lattice pattern was created by putting new materials on the lattice of the existing system ceiling without removing the panels. The ornament shelf looks like the lattice ceiling continues as is. The entire space is designed based on the one conceptual rule of “Intersection”. “Connecting”, which represents the corporate identity of the Group, is successfully communicated to visitors through their experience of the whole space, achieving the significant effect of giving the visitors an awareness of the newly established company. The entrance has truly realized a space that enhances the sense of expectation that what has been handed down from the past would be connected to the future.

Mixing with different wall-covering pattern and color, give more depth to the focal point of concept. Different kind of display units are made: postcard holder, t-shirt hanger, multi-level shelves and stools, bag hanger… etc, to maximize the flexibility of display different kind of product under the limited (50 sq/m). Circular shapes and walkway maximized the path and space of the shop.

Countless particles permeate the silent space, suddenly gravity depicts a track of guides towards the ceiling, and form a huge whirlpool. The vortex generates strong suction which distorts space and devours everything. In the distorted space, particles are reshape and restructured, leaving streamlined traces on ceiling and wall, capturing a moment in space. As you enter the cinema lobby, gravity reshapes the cinema appearance. The white ceiling swirl design mimics the black hole, where numerous particles flow into the trajectory and form a stacked light cove from low to high. At the same time, the swirl design composes the wall and floor design. The walls of the whole cinema are covered with flowing lines, combining gold and silver colour as feature accent, in which the lines are twisted and turned forming the shape of rolled up leaves in this distorted space. Under the force of gravity, the grey floor forms a way finding path by using three different stones with stainless steel division lines creating different layers. Light flows from the wall of the ticketing lobby to the ceiling, forming a glowing ring of galaxy. The particles flowing in the same direction which forms the ceiling, the wall and the floor design synchronizing with each other, enhancing the visual effects. The retail sales counter is suspended on the ground like a spaceship. The waiting area is streamlined with grey artificial stones into the white wall. The signage design is like flowing suspended onto the wall. The corridor is designed with streamlined light troughs flowing towards the ceiling into the lobby, where gold and silver panels are led to the centre of the lobby’s whirlpool ceiling design. This project covers an area of 2500 square meters, totalling 7 theatres. The original site is the earliest airport in China. Designers believe that this place is full of desire for flying from the people in the past, so the design concept hopes to achieve a sense of weightlessness of gravity, so that people can have their own sense of flying and satisfy human fantasies about the universe since ancient times.

“When gravity reaches at its extreme, it will form a black hole, absorbing everything, and distort the space and time; forming an irremediable scene.” <Lecture Notes on General Relativity>

An office lounge that creates a high-quality space with bar counters and artwork. Office relocation and new construction project for a client engaged in the large-scale renovation of condominiums, office buildings, and apartments.

The design target area is two floors (the 4th and 5th floors of the building) of about 200m2, of which the 4th floor is a lounge space for inviting visitors. We started the design process with the concept of creating a high-quality, premium space where customers and employees can stand up tall and feel proud to use the space. The lounge space is equipped with a bar counter that can be used for various purposes, such as dinner parties after work and events. Besides, a full range of functions is provided, including one large conference room and two medium-sized meeting rooms. While the entire space is decorated in gray tones to create a calm and mature atmosphere, custommade artwork is used as an accent to establish a new office’s new world view.

A RENOVATION PROJECT FOR A DRESS SHOP ABOUT 400M² We wanted the space to look a little more glamorous, as if it were clothed in a dress, so we came up with the concept of “Dress the Space.” To eliminate the ordinary white walls, we added lace curtains in front of the walls and wrapped the pillars with lace curtains to create a design concept. The materials used are white, brass color, green (marble), and light to create an elegant space where future brides-to-be can feel extraordinary. The combination of indirect lighting and each material creates a space with an especial feeling.

Keith first took down all the internal walls to open up the space to allow for an open kitchen, and swapped the bedrooms with the living area which initially overlooked a full-frontal sea view with container ships and Stonecutter Bridge in the distance. Since the living area is mainly for watching movies and entertaining guests, Keith believes the sea view and balcony should be reserved for the bedroom area where the client could wake up seeing. Since feng shui and privacy are also concerns, Keith custom designed ceiling-height wardrobe at the foyer to block the view of the sea from the main entrance to eliminate bad feng shui (this figuratively avoids money from rushing into the sea and be kept in the apartment for the homeowner), and behind the wardrobe are foldable doors suspended by black steel railing to allow the client to separate his room with the living space which shares the same audio-visual system that boasts a 5.1.4 stereo home theatre. The main attraction of the flat is the open space that starts at the foyer with vintage tiles that instantly give a wow factor for entrants as they step foot into the flat, which then leads to the open kitchen. The kitchen houses custom designed cold-rolled steel and elm wood finish hanging shelf and lighting system combo to display the client’s whisky collection and provide lighting for the dining area. The dining table also designed to utilize all of the apartment space, as it is intentionally extended at one end to accommodate more guests as they sit on the bay window to dine. Finally rounding off the open plan flat is the living area which has two special walls that brings out the essence of industrial chic: Concrete TV wall that complements the tailor-made cabinets that hide all the audio/visual units and bring out the subtle cleanliness the client wants and an authentic red brick wall beside the sofa that gives off a sense of imperfection to complete the industrial chic tone of the interior.

REIMAGING THE INDUSTRIAL CHIC IN HONG KONG Keith Chan, from Hintegro, completely revamped an old two-room apartment in Hong Kong into an industrial chic studio for an auditor who needs privacy yet an open plan to entertain his guests along with a home theatre. The client wanted dark timber and industrial elements, but didn’t want the interior to be overly “raw” so Keith and his design team achieve this request by choosing different materials that suit the industrial vibe for different areas of flat, but to set the overall tone of the interior, dark elm veneer, concrete walls, and authentic red bricks were used to instantly give the flat that industrial chic look.

WHY THESE CRAFTS? We picked these crafts because of the sound of their cultures is related to the sound of Hong Kong. Chinese people like to play Mahjong, not only for the entertainment, but also for the sound – the shuffling sound of Mahjong on the table, how the tiles tap on the table for a satisfying victory, and endless gossips during the game – which is very different to Western poker. To people from another culture, they might find the sound in the Mahjong games noisy. However in our culture, we value these “noise”, we reckon the louder it is, the happier and merrier, and might eventually bring more “liveliness” to the household. We grow up with these sounds, and we reckon the young generations are as curious as Karen, to try to understand why are we comfortable with what makes us different from other cultures. Like the crafts we selected: birdcage making and mahjong tile carving.

ABSTRACT A non-profit local arts and crafts programme that seeks to explore potential modern adaptions of the gradually fading traditional crafts in Hong Kong. By teaming up old masters with contemporary artists, we seek to offer new meanings to our cultural artisanal heritage and, at the same time, pass on such treasured skills to younger generations both locally and internationally. Through our programmes, we aim to evolve and transform these fading crafts into ones that will continue to sustain into the future.

114

Crafts have a strong tie to how our society and culture is being shaped. We have the architecture and landscape surrounding us as the hardware for our city, and the culture is exactly the software that identifies Hong Kong. We would like to preserve all these crafts, as they hold so much intangible value to our culture and city – they are what define and differentiate our city from the others.

Together, they explored, reshaped and created four art pieces that catered towards the modern behaviour of our society — ones that offer the younger generation new insights into our traditional crafts.

PART TWO: TRAM #61 EXHIBITION (APR – JUNE, 2020) At CeeKayEllo (CKL), we believe that art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. The four site-specific artworks created by the above artists will each be displayed on a moving public tram. This marked as the very first time sculptural artworks and installations are displayed on a Hong Kong tram for public consumption instead of private use. All the trams in Hong Kong are designed and made using fading crafts and techniques in our local tram depots, making them the perfect fit for this tribute project. By hosting the exhibition at a public transportation that is unique and significant to Hong Kong culturally and historically, we also hope to demonstrate how art could be publicly accessible, and a contribution to our society. Ranging from an interactive ceramics installation by Amanda that captures the sound of Mahjong shuffling, to Frederic’s animation triggered by the tram movement, to Jun’s ceramic installation utilising the natural light from the upper deck window, as well as Gohung’s immersive work that allows passengers to experience the life of a caged bird within the tram… By displaying these thoughtful artworks in our’s carefully designed tram, we hope to demonstrate the relevance of these fading crafts and skills with a creative and contemporary approach, giving modern meaning to these respectful classic crafts.

PARA HEROes

THE EXHIBITION DESIGN CONCEPT IS “UNCOATED”.

Name of Company of Individual: NOMURA Co., Ltd.

We designed the exhibition space to best convey what artists see para-table tennis through their sensibility and put it into their works to express without fixed concepts or preconceptions. This exhibition was designed in the hope that visitors face the work by breaking away from their preconceived notions, sympathize with para sports and expand their feelings. The components are made from the original materials, and are woven with “base” materials such as canvas and whitewash that are associated with each art. Since all if the art pieces are displayed without case or frame, visitors can enjoy it without filtering. To harness natural light, we left the bottom of panels open so that the light reflects against floor and blanket the exhibition area. We created a fair and natural space where the display expressions changes with time.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT CONCEPT WAS TO CHALLENGE TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE EXHIBITION SPACE With a hope of continuing such a meaningful activity, we wanted to achieve a best way possible. In order to achieve the mission of reusing most of exhibition materials, as well as to add design element, we opted module parts such as wall surface of 900 × 1800, a stage of 900 × 1800, and a box-shaped base frame, all are usually used in invisible area of the temporary structure. We only discarded a small amount of support and paper materials. All the wood had been sourced from Fairwood Program. When design work is for welfare or disability, we often prioritize functionality and creativity is neglected at a time. Believing in the value of cool design, we thank our client for giving this opportunity.

‘PARA HEROES Exhibition’ is an exhibition compellation by four young artists and creators. On the theme of para-table tennis, they expressed the attractiveness of competitions and players, and communicated the concept of diversity and inclusion in Japan and to the world.

Tokyo Michiterasu (Lighting the way to the future) is an illumination event held in Marunouchi, the city of history, tradition and culture around Tokyo Station. Since 1999, jointly hosted by the East Japan Railway Company and Mitsubishi Estate, it has been attracting over 600,000 tourists every year. In 2020, under the influence of a pandemic, with safety as the top priority, we designed and executed “Tokyo Michiterasu 2020,” a 2-week immersive experiential event, disseminating light of hope to people regardless of their location using physical and digital space, deploying Web-Based Augmented Reality. This highly artistic illumination event aims to send message of appreciation and encouragement, from the heart of Tokyo, to all the people who are under anxiety and challenging environment, including medical professionals and essential workers. We built an outdoor art gallery where people can enjoy art while taking a safe, leisurely walk. For prevention of crowds, the exhibition term was extended as twice as usual year. Visitors can create photo messages with Tokyo’s beautiful cityscape and send them to friends, family, and loved ones in remote places. On the website, two types of illumination experiences were delivered. One is the illustration of stories in which the animals made up of art calligraphy wander in city of Tokyo to find light of hope and diffuse it into the city. The other is Web AR experience in which viewers can activate animals etched with the art calligraphy of appreciation and encouragement messages and send to others, the message is merged.

With Haiijaii, we chose to communicate suffocation through the flickering lights of recycled glass neons. Some will have sharp flashes, some will pulsate slower, emulating breathing patterns affected by pollution. The audience are invited to breathe along with the rhythm of the light to feel the urgency through surrogate. When the body is used to receive information, we believe the impact is greater. Through the natural act of breathing, the common act of survival, we hope to not only unite but to find that missing link that has created such a polarised world we live in today.

Art x Sustainability The art installation is made out of recycled used and unwanted materials, Haiijaii aims to give a second life to the preloved, and promotes sustainability in all the materials we use.

Sustainable materials In this modern single-usage era, we would like to restate the practice of giving a “second life” to our preloved items. Ranging from bamboo woods, commercial neon signs, beach mats. These materials serve as visual stimulations for inspiring cohabitation in the world; the city, the forest and the beach, nourishing them, nourishing us.

Neon – The intangible cultural visual language Abstract Haiijaii (meaning “breathe” in Thai) is a light installation fueled by data of air quality index collected from various locations around the world. The lights “breathe” according to the pureness of the air. Some will flicker, emulating us choking from pollution and some will pulse slowly, like steady inhalation and exhalation from a healthy atmosphere.

Description Haiijaii first came about as 4 creatives, Adulaya Kim Hoontrakul (Curator), Ka Lun Karen Chan (Neon artist and designer), Frederic Bussiere (Architect and Multimedia designer) and Santipab Somboon (Multimedia designer), got together to discuss the notion of air quality and carbon emission. What is bad air? Is data enough to make people aware and react? Also, is the air quality index weaponised? Factual as it may be, many richer countries off-set their carbon emission through

With its downturn due to the rise of commercial LED neons and lightboxes as well as global government regulations, neon became a declining and shrinking scene globally. However in recent years, there has been an artistic revival reformation to bring back the neon, as seen around the world in art works, commercial spaces and signage.

• We have reconstructed used and unwanted commercial neons, and giving them a new life in terms of visual shape and purpose. • In Haiijaii, our art installation, each set of neon piece represents a country or region. entering through the glass facade and the reflected light of the picture projected on the wall in front of the lobby, and the formless light is restructured to produce a space. Considering the relationship between light and blank space as important, the space created by the two screens was planned to receive maximum natural light from the outside, creating a variety of scenes depending on the position of the viewer. In addition, the large screen, 8 meters wide and 3 meters high, is placed toward the back of the lobby, directs visitors to the archive space, and encourage activity. The myriad lenses of the screen duplicate the reflected light of the magnificent picture of nature, flora and fauna, the precision components of the enterprise and the technology projected on the wall, one by one. At the same time, it gradually takes in the outside environment, linking with the shifting light of the outside over time, and weaves it into a light sculpture that quietly changes the aspect of the room. By reconstructing natural light into a formative sculpture, even the slightest change in light can be perceived. Through this work of art piece, it gives people the opportunity to be aware of light as a hint to focus on the often-underrated environmental changes and beauties lurking in our daily lives. This project respects the concept as art, while also giving activity to the context of the space and embodying the expression of the client’s corporate statement, fused with the characteristics of the art piece. Creating such the space with the installation enhances the value of the entrance lobby, which is the main face of the corporation.

This project was designed for the entrance lobby of the new building of a global electronics, machine tool and precision components company based in Japan. By methodically assembling small, thin lenses to finely pick up the light and create objects like large screens of light, we embody our client’s corporate statement, “Miniature Technology, Infinite World”. The screen is made of art pieces named “lightflakes”, designed with the concept of restructuring light. This art piece is made of a 40mm diameter, 0.3mm thin lens that can be created any form according to use or spatial condition. When “lightflakes” is combined with precision, the light is materialized by the effect of the lens, transmitting and creating never-ending reflections and replicating with the landscape. The two screens suspended in the lobby are made up of 53,900 “lightflakes”, which are lenses, assembled horizontally and vertically. It receives the natural light
