Kaiwera Downs wind farm project details and status SITE DETAILS The site has been chosen for a variety of reasons: It’s a very windy place. The prevailing south-west/ westerly winds blow with an average wind speed of 8.7 – 8.9 m/s. The wind farm site is a sheep and beef farm in a Southland high country environment with good access to locations to build the turbines. Stage 1 wind turbines are located in the North-western portion of the site, on an area of generally flat to gently undulating land 400m – 460m elevation The site access from South Port is considered excellent with minor road upgrades required for the delivery of components. It’s close to the Gore PowerNet/ Transpower substation – the project includes an 18km new 33kV line
PROJECT STATUS The consent was originally granted on 13 May 2008 with a 10-year lapse period. Extensions were granted by the Gore District Council and Environment Southland in 2018 with lapse dates now 13 May 2024 and 09 February 2024 respectively. Construction is expected to be complete with the wind farm operational by the end of 2023.
