Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects half of the population age 55 and older, is responsible for more hospitalizations than any other disease, and is the leading cause of death among women age 35 and older. Half of all deaths due to heart disease occur in people with no symptoms. Using traditional screening methods, heart disease can go undetected in approximately one-third of individuals. Given these sobering statistics, improved diagnostic and preventive approaches are urgently needed. Through its comprehensive Heart Risk Assessment programs, the Mercy Regional Heart and Vascular Center diagnoses and treats individuals at high risk for cardiovascular disease, adding years to their lives.
