Injury prevention programs offered by A significant part of trauma care is prevention. Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center is involved in a number of community injury prevention activities including Mercy’s ThinkFirst Program, a national safety program directed at school-aged children.
Mercy’s ThinkFirst program Each year, 500,000 people in the U.S. sustain a brain or spinal cord injury. In fact, injury is the leading cause of death among children and teens. The most frequent causes of these injuries are motor vehicle crashes, violence, falls, sports and recreation. ThinkFirst is a national, award-winning, evidence-based program aimed at helping young people learn to reduce their risk for injury. ThinkFirst educates young people about their personal vulnerability and the importance of making safe choices. Implemented in 2008, Mercy’s ThinkFirst Program is geared towards educational outreach for school-aged children in Janesville and the surrounding area. Mercy health educators visit schools and teach kids about the importance of thinking first to stay safe before participating in an activity. Kids are taught brain and spinal cord safety, vehicle and pedestrian safety, bike safety, weapons and problem solving, playground, recreation, and sports and water safety. In the future, Mercy will take the ThinkFirst program to high schools.

Our new Mercy Regional Trauma Center team wants YOU to take the “Distracted Driver Pledge.” By taking the pledge, you promise to drive free of distractions, always. We encourage you to print this pledge, discuss with all the drivers in your family and sign as a promise that you will drive without distractions. -----------------------------------------------By reviewing and checking the boxes at right, I promise to drive without distractions.
I will not drive while … ❐ Text messaging ❐ Talking on my cell phone
If I do these activities while driving, it can lead to running red lights, hitting another car, running off the road, or hitting a pedestrian, animal or someone in a crosswalk.
I choose to LIVE, to drive safely and responsibly because I care for my family, passengers, others on the road and myself. Signed: ___________________________________
