Executive Summary
The following have been identified as the most significant health risks to Walworth County residents:
Mental-health related issues, including substance abuse and inadequate access to treatment; Underutilization of dental health services; Underutilization of preventative health screenings; and Harmful lifestyle choices (e.g. obesity, smoking, and inactivity).
Using these key findings, a committee will develop an action plan to address these needs. Both this report and the action plan will be made available to the public upon completion.
Purpose
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act [PPACA] passed by the United States Congress in 2010 set forth a requirement that tax-exempt charitable hospital organizations, such as Mercy Health System, must conduct a community health needs assessment for each community in which it operates a hospital facility. This report seeks to fulfill the community health needs assessment requirement for Mercy Walworth Hospital. The Community Health Status Assessment seeks to answer three questions:
Who comprises the community? What are the strengths and risks in the community that contribute to health? What is the health status of the community?
Methodology ď‚›
ď‚›
Mercy Health System distributed health questionnaires to a random sample of Walworth County residents. The survey, distributed to 2000 members of the community, covered various topics, including access to care, quality of life, chronic illnesses, and lifestyle factors. A response was received from 14.4% of households that received the survey (288 surveys). Once the survey responses were tabulated, the survey results were evaluated and analyzed for health and demographic trends. In addition to the data gathered from household surveys and focus groups, Mercy Health System analyzed health-related data from a variety of existing sources, including the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute’s County Health Rankings, Wisconsin Department of Public Health, and the United States Census Bureau. Secondary source data, when combined with the information gathered from the household surveys, provided a picture of what is working well in addition to identifying opportunities for improvement for the healthcare infrastructure of Walworth County.

Next Steps
The health needs assessment has provided a rich source of data to draw from when prioritizing the health needs of the Walworth community. Completion of surveys and secondary research revealed some of the challenges that Walworth County faces in providing health care services to its residents. These challenges include:
Increasing levels of alcohol and drug abuse; Inadequate access to mental health professionals; Underutilization of dental health services; Poor lifestyle choices (e.g. smoking, inactivity); and Underutilization of certain preventive health screenings.
Mercy Health System will continue to collaborate to set goals and formulate action plans to address these priority challenges.
