MEET JOSH KINGI-PERESE Certificate in Applied Technology (Boatbuilding) (current student)
Twenty-two-year-old Unitec boatbuilding student Josh Kingi-Perese from Mt Roskill plans on establishing a boatbuilding business once he completes his qualification. “I want to leave with a good foundation of knowledge in the boatbuilding industry and be able to design my own waka. I tell people about it and they say it’s a good business idea. But to me it’s not really about the business, or making money. It’s about doing something I like and also trying to contribute to the sport and make it grow bigger. “When you finish school you don’t know what to do. I worked at a few different jobs, mostly labouring. Then, one day, I was just randomly searching boatbuilding on the internet and that’s when I saw it — the Certificate in Boatbuilding. And I thought, ‘Man! I should go for it.’ So I did.
“I was just randomly searching boatbuilding on the internet and that’s when I saw it — the Certificate in Boatbuilding. And I thought, ‘Man! I should go for it.’ So I did.” 6
“Everyone I’ve met at Unitec has been so supportive, especially the tutors. For instance, as part of the course we are supposed to build a dinghy, but I really wanted to build a waka (canoe). My classmates all supported the idea and, most importantly, so did my tutor. He reckoned it was a good thing that his students were taking responsibility for their own learning
as it gave them a strong connection to their grades. “The whole process of doing the design, making the waka and then testing them on the water was a pretty cool experience. And for what is a basic entry level course, coming out with those things has been massive for me. “I’m a member of the Manukau Outriggers waka ama team and I’ve participated in races nationally and overseas, winning many national titles. Waka ama is more than a sport for me. “Waka ama has enabled me to connect with my Tainui, Ngāpuhi and Samoan cultures. Now I have a greater understanding about the sustainability of our water. My passion and involvement with waka ama, alongside the guidance of my parents, has made me the person I am today.” As a young man, Josh’s passion, dedication and newfound training will soon see him paddle the oceans in a waka of his own creation.

The Red Alert cyber security system A joint cyber security venture between Unitec and Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is set to become an important new weapon against computer malware attack. The Red Alert system is designed to alert companies and organisations to a cyber hack as soon as it happens. It’s the result of several years’ work by NICT scientists and engineers, and by Unitec staff and students working on computational intelligence for cyber security. A New Zealand first, it will be made available free for selected not-for-profit organisations this year, ahead of a wider release in 2016.

MAKING GREAT THINGS HAPPEN Learning from the experts at IBM and Concentrix The IBM and Concentrix Delivery Centres at Mt Albert campus give businesses access to new skills in mobile and analytics, as well as advanced technology. The Delivery Centres offer well-paid, flexible work during studies, great job prospects upon graduation and is available for all students to apply. Business and computing students can get work experience with IBM and Concentrix, and hear from the experts at guest lectures. In 2013, Unitec students accumulated more than 100,000 hours of practical, paid work experience, learning invaluable professional skills. Also in 2013, 11 students received Success Scholarships supported by IBM, valued at $5000 each.
Digital and collaborative learning The Mind Lab by Unitec is a pioneer in digital and collaborative learning, enabling teachers to keep up-to-date with modern technologies and applying that knowledge in the classroom. The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Practice (Digital & Collaborative Learning) is a new qualification designed for teachers and educators at all levels. It offers informed, practical and hands-on training that is relevant to what teachers are doing right now; using real technology to engage students to achieve better classroom outcomes. The Mind Lab is partnering with the NEXT Foundation to deliver 800 scholarships for teachers to undertake postgraduate study in digital and collaborative learning.
Telling stories through The Living Community Students in Communication and Performing and Screen Arts have been involved in a collaborative project to create media content, such as producing a series of TV programmes for broadcast on Sky’s Face TV. This has given them the chance to be the film crew on location shoots, take on studio presenter roles speaking to camera, do video editing, as well as a range of other work like interviewing and story research. Teamwork on a real production project like this is a great learning curve in all the right ways, preparing students for the challenges of jobs in the dynamic media communication and creative screen and storytelling professions.

THE ROOTS: MAKING A DIFFERENCE Waikare Komene Bachelor of Architecture (2008) Master of Architecture Professional (2010) Martin Leung-Wai Bachelor of Architecture (2008) Master of Architecture Professional (2012)
Martin Leung-Wai and Waikare Komene’s Roots Creative is now a successful collective of creative industries in art, architecture, design, landscape architecture, and the performing arts. The genesis of their entrepreneurial vision came during their time as architecture students at Unitec. Martin and Waikare were given the opportunity to run an architecture event in South Auckland for the Pacific Arts Summit. They knew this was an opportunity to give back to the community with their skills and passion for indigenous design and sustainability. They initiated the event, The Roots South Pacific Architecture. This is how The Roots began, with 8,000 plastic bottles given to 36 high school students to design and build sculptures at the Otara Town Centre in South Auckland. The aim was to inspire the next generation through creativity, sustainability and leadership.
"We have to take our hats off to Unitec. It made us who we are."
10
Today, The Roots aims to empower young people by developing opportunities to showcase creativity, innovation, and design by inspiring the next generation about environmental awareness and sustainability.
Several of The Roots’ projects involve mentoring creative Māori and Pacific high school students, inspiring and engaging with them through creative ventures, and at the same time promoting environmentally sustainable design principles. Their emphasis is on reshaping and changing the world in ways that benefit local communities during their studies, ways that fit with The Roots’ worldview: “We consider ourselves kaitiaki, or guardians, of the earth.” Among The Roots’ upcoming projects are Leader Training, educating creative and motivated youth on how to get involved, run and manage their own projects to create positive change; and the Otara Town Centre Project, educating the public on creatively using and reducing waste. What they love most about the work they do is the kick they get out of seeing their movement grow, and the effect The Roots has on others: “working with talented people, helping them to channel that creativity, sharing our knowledge and seeing the enthusiasm of people, building networks and relationships, empowering local business”.

TE PŌTI MARAE RESTORATION PROJECT Restoring a part of New Zealand history on the Whanganui River Bachelor of Architectural Studies students are playing an important role in the rehabilitation of a piece of New Zealand and Māori history, through the restoration of the Te Pōti Marae on the banks of the Whanganui River. The marae, the last known to have an original earth floor, was abandoned in the 1940s when the new river road was created and the river ceased to exist as the main transportation route in the area. The wharepuni (meeting house) Kōanga Rehua still stands, along with a Pātaka kai (elevated storehouse) and a Victorian cottage. The restoration project is run under the auspices of the Te Hononga (Māori Studio), the Māori Architecture and Appropriate Technologies Centre. Focusing on research and design projects with a Māori focus, Te Hononga has been offering Unitec architecture students the chance to participate in real-world studio design projects for more than 15 years. The Te Pōti Marae project group is open to a maximum of 20 students made up of second-, third- and fourth-year Architectural Studies
14
students. They will work with Te Pōti Marae trustees, local youth, and Heritage New Zealand (formerly Historic Places Trust) to undertake the restoration of the wharenui (meeting house), as well as planning for the re-establishment of fully functioning marae facilities. The marae is accessed by boat only and students will get the opportunity to spend several days on the river prior to the main restoration. The project will culminate in mid-October with a two-week restoration/build programme under the skilled guidance of Heritage professionals. The project also investigates the renaissance of Te Pōti Marae in a post-colonial context while master planning for a post-Waitangi Tribunal settlement reality for the marae and iwi of the Whanganui River. It provides an opportunity to plan and explore a master planning and restoration programme as a team, communicating ideas, developing solutions, and managing the challenge of delivering a fully sustainable solution. The marae is scheduled to reopen in January 2017.
Te Hononga has been offering Unitec architecture students the chance to participate in real-world studio design projects for more than 15 years.

MEET HELEN HELLESOE Foundation Studies graduate, Bachelor of Nursing (current student)
A NEW WAY OF LEARNING Unitec’s common semester
Setting your own agenda
It can be time-consuming and difficult to figure out what subject you want to specialise in. Unitec’s new common semester gives you a whole semester to explore your options and learn valuable study skills along the way.
The blended delivery style teaches you how to take charge of your own studies: you can access course materials when it suits you, and build knowledge through your own research. By working collaboratively with people from other disciplines, you’ll get a much better understanding of where specialisations overlap and how they fit together.
Students who want to go into natural sciences, health, sport or early childhood education share the same first or ‘common' semester. The common semester uses a blended learning format, which gives you more control over what you learn and how you learn. It’s a flexible approach that makes it easier to fit your studies around other commitments. There are face-to-face sessions with your tutor most weeks, as well as workshops where you can practise tasks with your classmates. You’ll use digital resources to access course materials, and join webinars to discuss ideas. There are also eventorials, which are shared learning events where you can meet staff and students from all the disciplines.
16
These are really important skills that will set you up for the rest of your studies and, eventually, your career. If you change your mind about which subject you want to go into, that’s fine too. Find out more about the common semester at www.unitec.ac.nz/common-semester

“I left school 20 years ago and didn’t have the qualifications to enter the Bachelor of Nursing programme. Graduating from the Foundation Studies Nursing Pathway gave me an easier transition into tertiary study. It was a crucial step in moving into the Bachelor of Nursing Degree and my goal to become a Registered Nurse. I could not have done as well as I have without the Foundation Programme. It addressed so many gaps in my knowledge. “I’ve enjoyed the ‘community feel’ of Unitec, having smaller classes and lecturers who showed a genuine interest in their students. You need to be prepared to work hard. But you also need to make your family and friends aware of your commitment to your studies, especially students that have children, jobs and other obligations. As a single parent, I was nervous about returning to study after an absence of so many years, so I was very happy to achieve an A average in my Foundation Studies course. I’ve been able to continue with my academic success in the Bachelor of Nursing Degree and was the recipient of the Tressa Thomas Retraining Award last year. “Currently I’m undertaking my final placement in the Bachelor of Nursing Degree at Mason Clinic with the intention to enter into the Mental Health Nursing Internship in Forensic Mental Health. I’d like to remain within this area of nursing for the next couple of years and undertake post-graduate studies with a goal of working in nursing research and education.”

MAKE SURE YOU’VE GOT ALL THE ANSWERS
Got a question you’re still not sure about? Check our essential FAQs.
1
3 Do you know how to apply for a programme?
What’s the difference between Unitec and universities?
Please see our admission criteria at www.unitec.ac.nz/admission. It explains how we consider your qualifications, age and work experience when you apply for a programme.
Applying online is the quickest and easiest way. Check the step-by-step guide to applying on page 80.
Universities generally have a more theoretical approach to study, whereas Unitec focuses on vocational learning, mostly with handson experience outside of campus. We offer qualifications at all levels, from Bridgepoint foundation certificates through to postgraduate programmes. And because we don’t usually teach in lecture theatres, you might find your classes are smaller too.
If you’ve done Cambridge International Exams (CIE) or the International Baccalaureate (IB), you can also find out what the equivalent NCEA credits are. Specific admission requirements for each Unitec programme are listed on the programme web page. Make sure you check which subjects you need and at what level.
2 Are you likely to get the grades you need? Your teachers should be able to give you a good indication of the grades you are likely to get. But even if you don’t achieve the necessary grades you may still find a route to higher education via our Bridgepoint Foundation Education programmes. Offered at Levels 2, 3 and 4, they prepare you for certificate, diploma or degree-level study in the subject you’re interested in. You can also talk to our Career Centre or to Student Central (Te Pae Kōrero) for advice about other programmes that might be suitable.
4
When do you need to apply by? Some programmes have a closing date, but in most cases it’s best to apply as soon as possible because places fill up fast. Check the programme you’re interested in on the Unitec website to see if there’s a preferred application date.
5
What happens if you don’t get into the programme you want to study? If your application is unsuccessful we’ll let you know why. Depending on the reason, we’ll suggest alternatives, or maybe encourage you to apply for a different programme or a later intake. With 160 programmes on offer there are lots of options.
6
Have you visited Unitec and met the staff? It’s a really good idea to come and visit us before you apply, and there are lots of ways to do it – from Taster Days to Info Evening. Check out the options on page 74.
78
7
What are the admission requirements for the programme you want to study?
8 Have you done any research on the career you’re interested in? Make use of the Unitec Career Centre. It offers free and impartial advice to anyone considering studying at Unitec. They can tell you more about how to get into different careers, and what you might need to study to get there. Visit www.unitec.ac.nz/careercentre.
9 Can you obtain a scholarship to help with your studies? Yes. Unitec has a number of scholarships on offer, for students at every level. Some scholarships help to pay for your tuition fees, others cover the cost of materials, and some even include mentoring. Visit www.unitec.ac.nz/scholarships.
