Holiday Greetings

Dezember 2014

from Christine Sustreanu

Chapter 1 From Office in Rheinfelden

Now as another year draws to an end, the days have suddenly gotten shorter and I am face to face with the last page on the yearly calendar, nostalgia sets in. It is at this time of the year when I slow down and am more aware of those around me. I try to have more empathy for those in need, more time for my family and friends, and making nice gestures towards people I do not even know. Something as simple as giving a smile to a person who looks lonely and distressed, or helping someone who is struggling with their luggage‌‌ there are endless daily occasions, if only we are open for them. Its also the time to enjoy a good book, nice music and a hot chocolate or a nice cup of tea. The simple pleasures of life. The house gets decorated with candles and branches of Christmas pine trees, and even something as simple as walking through cities and villages at night awakes a special feeling at this very unique time of the year. I am grateful to all of you who are working over this time, welcoming our guests onboard of our ships, to their home away from home, and ensuring their holiday season is one which is filled with endless special memories. I think about the refugees around the world, of whom sadly there are more now than ever before, without a roof over their heads, kids who have lost their parents in senseless wars, and the list goes on. It makes me remember just how fortunate I am, and how I am in a position to help those who perhaps are not so fortunate. I wish you and your beloved ones a happy and thoughtful holiday season, and hope you will find the time to ignite a light in some one else’s heart. Best wishes for the holidays and coming new year. What is Appreciation?

Dezember 2014

by Emilia Madrigal

Dale Carnegie beautifully expressed the difference between appreciation and flattery. He said, „The difference between appreciation and flattery? That is simple. One is sincere and the other insincere. One comes from the heart out; the other from the teeth out. One is unselfish; the other selfish. One is universally admired; the other universally condemned.“ In order to continue our further analysis into our Mission and Vision, it seems fitting to delve deeper into the word “Appreciation”. A relatively small word with a large meaning. But what does it actually mean to us- “us” as individuals and “us” as a company? Is there a difference? Does its meaning depend on our position which we hold within the company, or which country we come from? Or perhaps it depends on which ship we work? I posed this question to each ship, curious what would be the possible outcome. I share a collection of some of the answers received, and leave you with one thought: Perhaps this is a common word which every single one of us, regardless of position or background, shares as a basic necessity to thrive, in all aspects of life. Appreciation is: • Appreciation is for me when after season Captain comes and tells me what I have done. I feel appreciated when I do something and someone gives a positive feedback, yes you did a good job. • When my superiors trust me for getting a job done • From my point of view, appreciation is first coming from small, everyday situations around us;It’s very important to appreciate our colleagues, make it a habit to say “thank you” without expecting anything in return • Appreciation is for me awareness, admiration, evaluation, feedback, but also critical judgment • Appreciation can be expressed in many different ways: through a kind word(s), a smile, a hug, a compliment as well as through physical thing(s). • Getting noticed in a good way • Human relations regardless social status or gender prejudice • The recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something • A simple thank you is more than enough • Appreciation does not mean only receiving or giving thanks and you`re welcome answers, but creates the whole structure of someone`s feelings and perception of being accepted, understood and never the less respected for their own individuality • It’s a moment, when you show feeling, can be a smile, tear in the eye, or just a simple look • Appreciation is better shown than told! • Understanding the values of something or someone, treat it or him/her with honor and respect. • Recognition from head office with salary increase Continued on next page

• Appreciation together with respect and honesty are most important characteristics, it is not a one way system, it works always from 2 sides, either giving and taking. Everybody needs to get appreciation, no matter the position, it is a spice of life. • I feel appreciated when I get my contract at the end of season • When I read the positive comments from our Guests • When I make people happy and they are satisfied with what I am doing for them. You are getting positive feedback, you feel good about yourself and it pays off too • From the company side I can see the appreciation at the end of the when I receive my job rewards on my bank account • When they give me the chance to do training for the position I ask • I feel appreciated by all the presents for us for Easter, Christmas and Housekeeping week was amazing! • I feel appreciated, if my concerns find a “ear “which truly cares and follows • When we talk about appreciation, I would like to say that I feel appreciated when I know that around me there are persons I can count on in every moment, good or bad, when I know they will support me in proportion as they are able to. • I feel appreciated when I my colleagues respect me and are thoughtful with me, when they can perceive me the way I am as a person and as a professional and respect that, giving me their true opinion about, helping me to correct what I am not doing so well. • I feel appreciated by a superior when he takes the time to give me constructive criticism when I am wrong but does not forget to acknowledge my strengths and my good ideas. Appreciation brings: • Every time I receive recognition from the guests or the crew, bonus from the company, I sleep with the feeling of a job well done • The way how appreciation is expressed differ from one person to another but to feel appreciated is to feel happy and complete. • Appreciation for what you are doing makes you feel more of a team member. The more appreciation you receive, the more motivated you are in your job. We appreciate: • We appreciate the company taking care of our needs and providing us with all the tools to do a job well done • I appreciate being able to be on the same ship as my girlfriend. • To be nominated and rewarded for the best employees of the season. • Another thing what I like it’s the privilege to work in a 6 stars hotel (ship) which gives me the change to serve to a high class guests and VIP, which I really appreciate. There are still many, many positive things that I find in Uniworld, but I will give you just one more couple before I finish my short answer and this is the opportunity to work with real professionals which are my colleagues. Introduction of new employee Christian Krempl I was born and raised on the Country side, the Green Heart of Austria -Steiermark. When not onboard sailing on one of our ships, I enjoy hiking in the beautiful mountains of Austria and during the winter months, skiing in both Austria and Switzerland. I have a passion for cooking and excellent wines and enjoy indulging my passion at home and around the world. With over 14 years at sea, there are not many places I have not seen from the North Cape and the Baltic to South America and Antarctica, from China and Japan to Australia and South Africa, the Panama Canal and Canada to Alaska and the Mediterranean. What is my job in the company?

Christian Krempl Director F&B

Director F&B Overseeing the guest services on board in regards to Restaurant, Bar and Butler operation, liaison with the Culinary Team and operation. How long are you employed at Uniworld? I just started recently, on the 15th of October 2014. Something more about my professional experience prior to joining Uniworld? I commenced my Hospitality career at the young age of 14 when I spent two years at the very well-known Hotel School in Bad Gleichenberg, Austria. Following my initial training I then went on to spend 4 years as an apprenticeship as a Chef and Waiter with a Relais & Ch창teau Hotel located at Lake Achensee in Tyrol. I found that I truly enjoy the luxury sector of the Hospitality Industry and continued when I moved to St. Moritz, Switzerland working two years at the Kulm Hotel. I hold a Diploma as a Sommelier, a Master Degree in Restaurant Management and a Hotel Degree from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. My career at sea I started at the age of 21 onboard the M/S Sagafjord and since that time I have served onboard many world renowned cruise lines, including Seabourn, Crystal, Oceania, Cunard, Delphin, Peter Deilmann, Amadeus and Viking River Cruise lines. During my time on land I had the pleasure of working for various Leading Hotels of the World in Austria and Switzerland which are both world renowned for its high level of hospitality. What made me apply for Uniworld? I was looking for a new career opportunity on land and in my life, still being able to work with ships. With Uniworld I found the perfect match to combine both and still being able to work in the Luxury Industry.

New bracelets Amy Biehl Foundation Letter from Kevin, Managing Director of the Amy Biehl Foundation to Mrs Sustreanu: Hi Christine I hope you are well. I was so pleased to get the good news about the bracelets, thank you so much, we really appreciate it. To update you on Amy Biehl Foundation, we now have over 2500 children in the townships in our programs and centers and, whilst fundraising is tough, the success of the programs and the children is very heartwarming. This is all made possible thanks your support. Earlier in the year, after 9 years in our premises provided free by Woolworths, a retailer, they needed the space back. It has been a tough time of finding new premises but out of every challenge comes a better opportunity and we managed to buy a run-down place and now fixing it up – made possible through an extensive and dedicated fundraising campaign to new donors and corporates specifically for the premises. It now gives us great opportunities to make an even bigger difference in the communities. It is the perfect location between the townships and the CBD, has an area for our office space, buildings for us to have 7 classrooms for hospitality, fashion design, beautician, plumbing and other classes like literacy, drama, dance and computers for township youth, has a theatre where the creative arts kids can perform, an area we will turn into a restaurant for the hospitality kids to get experience and to offer traditional SA food on our Amy Biehl Cultural Township Tours that we run, and has 2 X 3 bedroom apartments we will turn into student accommodation for volunteers from UK, Europe and USA. The good news is we continue to make a huge impact in our poor communities and keep the township kids that are in our programs away from HIV Aids, poverty, gangs, violence and crime, creating future leaders, entrepreneurs and emotionally well rounded citizens. As you know, providing these students with meaningful opportunities helps to grow the economy moving forward, as the next generation will be better equipped to deal with the challenges of tomorrow. Sadly, over 50% of children in South Africa who start Grade R still do not sit to write grade 12. This and the high level of teen pregnancy, over 2000 girls in the Western Cape alone in 1 year alone, the unacceptable level of teen gangs, violence and drug abuse is why the need for the Amy Biehl Foundation is still so big. I am pleased to be able to let you know that children and youth in the Amy Biehl Foundation programs do not drop out of school, or get pregnant and stay away from gangs, drugs and violence BUT more so go on to study after school, get employed and contribute to the upliftment of their communities. Well, I think that is enough news for now, good to be in touch and thank you so much for your support. I have attached a few photos for you. Warm regards Kevin Kevin Chaplin Managing Director The Amy Biehl Foundation and South African Ubuntu Foundation Trusts

What to do in... Belgrade by River Princess Crew

Dezember 2014 Chapter 2 From the ships

Belgrade (Beograd), the capital of Serbia, is the third largest city in South-eastern Europe after Istanbul and Athens. Just over 1,700,000 people live there. It is the city of youth. More than 40% of its citizens are between 15 and 44 years of age. It is situated on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. In 2009, Lonely Planet travel guide ranked Belgrade as the world's number one party city in terms of the quality and diversity of its nightlife. Sightseeing The Cathedral of Saint Sava (Hram Svetog Save) is the largest Serbian Orthodox church, the largest Orthodox place of worship in the Balkans and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. The church was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, with four 44 m-high steeples. At its highest point the dome is 70 m in height, while the main gilded cross is an additional 12 m high, giving the Cathedral a total height of 82 m. It can accommodate 10,000 believers at any one time, and the western choir gallery can hold 800 choristers. Nikola Tesla Museum is a collection of artifacts and material relating to the life and work of one of the world’s greatest inventors. A minimum of 278 patents in 26 countries belong to him. We are thankful for many of everyday life’s comforts this genius invented. Kalemegdan Fortress was built as a defensive structure on a ridge overlooking the confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers during the period from the 2nd to the 18th century. Today the fortress is a unique museum of the history of Belgrade.

Restaurants Kalemegdanska Terasa is a restaurant with tradition and an oasis of hedonism. As a perfect accessory to a perfect meal, the restaurant has a spectacular view over the city and its rivers. It is highly recommended by the locals as well. To find more good restaurants, visit the Skadarlija area. Shopping UŠĆE Shopping Centar is the largest shopping center in Serbia and the region. With this kind of epithet, you could not expect less than excellent shopping. Located on left bank of the Sava River, near the city center, business district and confluence (ušće in Serbian) with Danube, this mall couldn't be better choice to spend some time and money.

Souvenir shops Again, Kalemegdan Fortress is a point of our interest. Together with Obilicev Venac square, Kalemegdan street and Knez Mihailova street, these are the places where local Serbian souvenirs like traditional clothes and hats, rakias and many more can be found.

Coffee shops Searching for the best coffee in town? Easy: Greenet Caffe Bars Ana4Guns is the perfect place for all true hedonistic souls – a bar for evening catch-ups with friends, girlfriends and boyfriends. The bar is usually crowded and the atmosphere is warm. Idiott. Another Belgrade standard, which is located in Dalmatinska 13 next to the Botanical Gardens, and quite near to the club Plastic. Dali Bar is one of the most popular cocktail bars in the city with an interesting interior inspired by the artworks of Spanish artist Salvador Dali. It’s located in the heart of Belgrade in the beautiful Hilandarska Street, at number 20.

Dr. FleetFlash Ask your Question Dear Dr. FleetFlash, How does the 3rd pillar of the Swiss pension system in Switzerland work? Ben Wirz

Dear Ben The 3rd pillar of the Swiss pension system is a private, individual option that you can use to top up your income, once retired, which is not covered by the first two pillars. These schemes typically take the form of a retirement savings account or a flexible savings account. But rules and regulations with such accounts depend on your country of residence. Therefore I suggest you contact your bank or insurance company in your home country to find out more about your options for extra retirement savings. Kind regards Dr. FleetFlash

How to use QR-Codes

Dezember 2014 Chapter 4 Other Stories

QR Codes were invented by Denso Wave in 1994. At first, they were used to track vehicle parts during the manufacturing process. Now, QR Codes are a popular marketing tool, allowing users to quickly access websites and other media. A QR Code can contain such things as text, a URL, an SMS or a phone number. This guide will show you how to read them Using a Smartphone Install a QR Code reader app. Download the app on Google Play (Android Market), BlackBerry AppWorld, App Store (iOS/iPhone) or Windows Phone Marketplace. Most QR scanning apps are free. Any app that can read barcodes should be able to process QR codes. Run the app. Your screen will switch to a camera display. Point your camera to a QR Code. Hold your camera steady so that the QR code comes into focus. Try to fill the frame as much as possible with the code to speed up the reading process. You can use a smartphone with a QR reader to scan QR codes off of a computer monitor or other display. Access the content. Depending on the QR code, you may be directed to a webpage, receive an SMS, or taken to your phone’s marketplace to download an app. Be wary of scanning unknown QR codes. They could send you to malicious websites.
