Valedictorian Speech Hello, you beautiful people — the friends and family members who have come out to support us, teachers, mentors, faculty. Grandma. And hello, class of 2019! Good job. Cool hat.

My name is Darian Krajci. To begin, I’d like to thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to speak in front of you, here today. It appears that we’ve arrived at an ultimate moment in our lives. Most of us are now legally adults. New doors of opportunity are being opened. We can vote, buy cigarettes in Alberta, and acquire our commercial helicopter pilot’s licenses. There’s a sense of finality in the air. Our 12 years of federally mandated education are wrapping up, people are going to be moving away in the fall, going on to new jobs, travelling, or continuing to post secondary education. In the midst of all this change, many of you may be stuck, still confused about which direction you want to take your life; the fear of the unknown, the fear of failure, or the fear of being left behind looming over your head. It may feel like the beginning of the end.

It’s okay. I think we can all collectively share in these feelings, in someway or another. However, I would raise the argument that though we are approaching the end, it is merely the end of the beginning. If could only take away one thing I’ve learned in high school (props to Mr. Suzuki), it’s that history is not something that has come and gone. It’s not just trivia to be read about in textbooks, remembered for an exam, and then forgotten. History is something that is actively shaping and being shaped by all of us. A continuum. The human story. I ask you now, what do you want your part in the story to be? It’s easy to feel like a bystander, as if history is something that other people make, that our actions can’t have any real consequence, and that we’re destined to ride the waves of others. ‘’Not everyone can change the world, and out of the 7.7 billion people living on

this planet, what makes me so special as to think I can do it?” That is a fair point. Yes, not everyone can change the world, but how many of us try? Take a chance on something you believe in, because there’s always the possibility that you try —and fail — at something that you DON’T like. So, you may as well give it a shot, on something you love. I’d tell you that I believe in you, but I feel like that would be missing the point. You’ve got to believe in yourself. Settle for nothing, and try as hard as you can to achieve what you want. The reality of things is, life is short, and time is fleeting. So my advice to this year’s grad class is, do something worth your time. Whatever you feel it may be. Thank you

Dry Grad
