Military sets up shop in Merritt Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Local firefighters are receiving a boost from approximately 100 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Land Task Force soldiers currently stationed in Merritt. The Canadian Forces Fire Camp Merritt is part of an overall tally of 280 soldiers recruited for firefighting efforts in B.C. after the provincial government requested federal assistance last week to deal with the hundreds of wildfires burning across the province. CAF members are also stationed in Vernon and Kelowna. In Merritt, soldiers are supporting BC Wildfire Service personnel with the Mount Gottfriedson and Juliet Creek fires, according to Maj. JP Wright. “These are fires that are fairly under control, especially the Gottfriedson, but that doesn’t mean that the fire is out and it doesn’t mean that there isn’t work to be done,” he said. Providing low-level mop-up duties keeps the fires from spreading, he explained, and allows the more experienced firefighting crews to focus energy and resources into bigger fires and tasks. “Soldiers [are] patrolling through the woods looking for hot spots, looking for flare-ups, putting those out with water, running hoses across the area and in some cases even digging line guards to prevent the spread of fires outside of the fire zone,” he said. Crews had received relevant training before arriving in Merritt last Thursday, Wright said. The training prepares them to assist firefighters with wildfires deemed under control, in the

mop-up stage or low in complexity and expected behavior. “Since we’ve been out here we’ve received even more training from some of the more experienced crews and contractors in the region to get us up to speed,” he added. The CAF members are stationed just beside the Merritt airport and Provincial Wildfire Training Centre, which suits the soldiers just fine. “We’re used to living wherever, in any kind of condition no matter what, and we can be self-sufficient. We can tear down our camp very easily and move it to another location if required,” he said, adding there is no indication yet if they will be ordered to relocate. “For us here there’s enough fires and enough work in this area that we don’t see any need to move just yet.” While stationed in the

Nicola Valley, soldiers also have the opportunity to explore Merritt and get to know the community, said Wright. “When they’re off-shift we’re encouraging them to get out into the town as much as they can,” he said. “It’s good that we’re

here, it’s good that they see us and it basically puts a face to the name of Merritt. We’re not just here to do a task — we’re here to assist these people.” The work hits close to home for many in the camp, said Wright, as sev-

eral soldiers stationed in town are from the area. “Even the ones that aren’t, we’re all Canadians and we see this as something that could happen to any one of our towns,” he said. “We’re really proud to be able to assist these people.”

POLICE FILES

Suspicious fires sparked in Merritt Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Local RCMP are investigating the acts of a potential arsonist in Merritt. Staff Sgt. Lorne Wood explained local police and the fire department have attended to a string of suspicious fires in empty lots lately, the most recent of which ignited on Aug. 15. According to Wood, RCMP attended to a stump burning in an empty residential lot near Nicola Avenue and Chapman Street at 8:40 p.m.

60TH Annual

“The bigger issue there [is that] we’ve been looking at three similar incidents in that same area over the past two to three weeks,” said Staff Sgt. Lorne Wood. “They were just small fires, but realistically the potential is there for something dangerous to happen, especially with all the homes in that area.” While RCMP do not have any suspects at this time, anyone who has seen suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Blowing smoke online Landing a joke on the internet has become tricky business. Making the jokes, well that’s Cole Wagner the easy COLE’S NOTES part. But landing the joke — particularly when it expands well beyond your intended audience — that requires a more delicate sensibility. Just ask the creators of a satirical Facebook event which attracted a slew of media attention this week. The event, titled “Blow Spokane’s Smoke Away to Canada,” asked that residents of Spokane, Wash. place five box fans on the roofs of their homes to blow the smoke from B.C.’s forest fires back from whence it came. “After much deliberation and mathematical calculation, we have figured that it is absolutely possible for us to blow this smoke away with high powered fans. This Friday, every resident must place at least five box fans on their roof. Turn your fans on to the highest setting, and aim them toward northeastern Canada. Team work makes the dream work,” reads the description of the event. A report from CTV News revealed that the event was created by a group of friends who were stuck indoors over the weekend due to the poor air quality outside. Of course, it’s only a harmless prank until it isn’t — and it didn’t take long for the viral machine to seize upon the event, and far too many earnest Canadians took the bait. In high school, I had an English teacher who explained to us how easily our sarcastic, often caustic text messages could be misinterpreted by the wrong party. “Tone is hard over text,” she stressed.

Corbyn, Palestinians and Brexit It sounds like a tempest in a teapot, but it could bring down Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain’s Labour Party — and that could end up meaning that Britain GWYNNE DYER doesn’t leave the The international European Union STAGE after all. It started last Saturday with a photograph in the Daily Mail (a newspaper that regards Corbyn as the Devil’s second cousin) of the Labour leader laying a wreath in a cemetery in Tunisia four years ago. He had laid it, said the Mail, at a memorial to the Palestinian terrorists who planned the attack that killed eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. It was a calculated attempt to paint Corbyn as anti-Semitic, and the mud stuck. The Mail also published a 2013 video in which Corbyn said that Palestinians were experiencing “conditions in the West Bank, under occupation, of the very sort that will be recognizable by many people in Europe who suffered occupation during the Second World War.” That’s

perilously close to comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who never misses a chance to portray Europe as a cauldron of anti-Semitism, immediately tweeted: “The laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorists who perpetrated the Munich massacre... deserves unequivocal condemnation from everybody — left, right, and everything in between.” Corbyn replied at once on his own Twitter feed: “What deserves unequivocal condemnation is the killing of over 160 Palestinian protesters in Gaza by Israeli forces since March, including dozens of children.” Fair comment, perhaps, but that is not what a prudent British politician would choose to say when the Israeli prime minister has just accused him of antiSemitism. Twitter makes everybody stupid. Jeremy Corbyn is not anti-Semitic, but he certainly could be described as anti-Zionist. It’s not an uncommon position among British politicians who joined the Labour Party in the 1960s and 70s: admiration for Israel and close ties with the sister Labour Party that then dominated Israeli politics, mixed with a keen awareness that the triumph of Israel had been built on a Palestinian tragedy.

Corbyn is also on the hard left of his party, which means that he has never met an anti-imperial, anti-colonial, or anti-capitalist cause that he did not like. That’s how he found himself attending the ‘International Conference on Monitoring the Palestinian Political and Legal Situation in the Light of Israeli Aggression’ in Tunisia four years ago. And once there, he naturally went along when they all laid a wreath in the cemetery. The conference was officially linked to the devastating Israeli air strike on Tunis in 1985, which killed 80 senior officials of the Palestine Liberation Organization, members of their families, and Tunisian civilians. Corbyn doesn’t speak either French or Arabic, the two dominant languages in Tunisia, and he presumably thought that’s what the wreath-laying was about. So he took part in it. In fact, the wreath was laid in memory of a different bunch of Palestinians, members of the Black September group, who had helped to plan the Munich outrage and were later assassinated by Israeli intelligence agents. Did Corbyn just get confused, or did the Tunisians deliberately mislead him? Who knows? Who cares?

OPINION LETTER

to the editor

Say no to skewed power in B.C.

Tips for avoiding the viral spotlight

Editor,

To vote, go online to merrittherald.com

Most of our everyday world runs on one person, one vote, which is proportional representation (PR). How so? When union members vote on a new contract, the person with high seniority and the person fresh out of school each get one equally-weighted vote. When teachers vote on a new contract, the ballot from the teacher nearing retirement carries the same weight as the on-call teacher looking for their first full-time contract. The same goes for every professional association and trade union. There is no skewing the votes. No sub-group receives 39 per cent of the votes and magically gets 54 per cent of the decision-making, giving them 100 per cent of the power, the exact skewing we regularly see in our first past the post elections. Why do we accept this voodoo magic in our most important forum, our elected governments? We don’t have to and I’m tired of it. Vote for PR this fall.

What do you think of the City of Merritt’s bylaw on recreational marijuana sales?

A change in leadership ends Brexit From Page 6 What Corbyn should have done when the Daily Mail broke that story was to admit all, plead ignorance, and make a grovelling apology. It would have been humiliating, but he would certainly have survived to fight again. He didn’t do that. He is a very stubborn man, and he combined a lame semi-admission of his mistake — “I was present at that wreathlaying. I don’t think I was actually involved in it” — with further criticisms of current Israeli policy. And thereby he turned a little personal problem into a crisis for the Labour Party. Labour has been tearing itself apart recently over differences about where to draw the line between legitimate criticism of Israeli policy and anti-Semitism. It is certainly not institutionally anti-Semitic — Corbyn’s predecessor as party leader, Ed Miliband, was Jewish — but it has already alienated a lot of its Jewish supporters. Corbyn’s blunder may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Corbyn has never had the support of most Labour members of parliament. It is becoming plausible

(though no more than that) to think that he might lose the leadership — especially as it is becoming clear that he’s the main reason Labour doesn’t enjoy a big lead in the opinion polls over the chaotic Conservative government led by Theresa May. Which brings us to Brexit. The current stalemate in British politics, which has paralysed negotiations for a sensible post-Brexit relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, risks ending next March in a disaster in which the UK crashes out of the EU with no deal at all. The stalemate is mostly due to the fact that both major parties in the UK are profoundly divided between pro- and anti-Brexit factions, but both parties have pro-Brexit leaders. Recent opinion polls show a small but growing majority of voters would vote ‘Remain’ in a second referendum, but neither party will back such a referendum under the current leadership. If Labour had a different leader, all that could change — and Corbyn is in deep trouble. Gwynne Dyer’s new book is ‘Growing Pains: The Future of Democracy (and Work)’.

THE HERALD WANTS TO KNOW

An absurdist Facebook event aimed at improving air quality by hurling rocks has more than 38,000 people who are listed as “attending.” Photo courtesy of Facebook

From Page 6 That is especially true when you’re not sure who might be reading the text in question. Users in some online forums have taken to adding a “/s” signifier to the end of sarcastic comments as an online approximation of a wink. But while it might be practical, given the propensity for people to take offense to things written online, a joke is never quite as funny or clever if you have to say it’s a joke. Nevertheless, when the “Blow Spokane’s Smoke Away to Canada” event made it to the mainstream, the creators bit the bullet and added a disclaimer in all capitals to the event description: “WARNING...

STRONG SATIRE BELOW.” Apparently, a couple of friends from Spokane weren’t the only ones who were cooped up inside spending way too much time on social media this weekend. The original event has spawned a number of copycat events on Facebook, including “Blow Spokane’s smoke back to Spokane,” and “Throw rocks at the smoke to make it go away.” (The latter of which has about 38,000 people “attending,” so consider wearing a hard hat this weekend). Personally, I’m all for a touch of absurdist humour in tough times. But I realize — especially as someone whose own tongue-in-cheek columns are sometimes misinterpreted — that tone is tough over text.

A joke that might be funny to your group of friends might not land quite so well with agitated residents hoping that their property isn’t affected by the wildfires. Ultimately, the less time we spend outdoors, the more time we all spend glued to our social media feeds. The fallout from these satirical Facebook events have been minimal, but it’s worthwhile for all of us to remember that we has little control over the messages we put out on the internet. So rather than a tongue-in-cheek tweet or an angry Facebook rant, maybe consider spending your smokefilled afternoons playing a board game, or doing laundry. Otherwise you might be the next viral sensation to spread faster than a B.C. wildfire.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS REZONING APPLICATION

Parking a concern for new community centre

FRIENDS & Neighbours Friends & Neighbours

Dybikowski’s exhibition is set to feature 26 works inspired by both her travels and her time at home in the Nicola Valley. Photo contributed Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Two buildings are currently located on the lot where St. Michael’s Church is located. The building in the foreground is the existing church, which would be converted to a community centre, while the smaller building would serve as the church. Cole Wagner/Herald Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

The City of Merritt is considering a rezoning application that would allow the St. Michael’s Church lot owners to sell a chunk of the parcel to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The application to rezone 1990 Chapman Street from institutional and public use (P3) to central business (C2) was given first and second reading at the regular city council meeting on Aug. 16. Owners of the land — the Fraser Basin Property Society — are proposing to sell the existing church on the north parcel to the CMHA to be used as a community centre. The existing community hall on the southern parcel would remain under ownership of the Fraser Basin Property Society and will be used as a church and by other community groups. Interior Health often contracts with CMHA to provide psycho-social rehabilitation and other health services to the community, according to the city’s planning and development ser-

vices manager Mark Brodrick. “It could be anything from smoking cessation or life skills or dealing with addiction or different kinds of mental health issues,” he said, adding the CMHA may also rent out the space to community groups for support and recreational purposes. The only problem, according to Brodrick, is the total plot of land is too small for the city’s current subdivision requirements for Public Use (P3). That’s when the idea to change the zone

to one with a smaller minimum area requirement for subdivision came to light. “You have one parcel, they want to subdivide it into two, and then it would be under two separate ownerships,” he said. Councillors expressed concerns that there is currently no parking on the lot. The property owners are proposing to add three spaces on the southern parcel (which would house the new church), as opposed to the 19 required by the city. The owners are proposing to add zero

parking spaces on the northern parcel (which would contain the mental health community centre), which requires six. “I don’t think it’s the church issue that would be the problem [with parking],” said Coun. Linda Brown. “It may be the constant in-andout of mental health client appointments and volunteers — they’re also going to be using it as a community centre.”

With the stroke of a paintbrush, the Nicola Valley is set to come alive at the Courthouse Art Gallery. Members of the community can experience local painter Libby Dybikowski’s “Merritt to Marrakech” exhibition — which features 26 new, original pieces — from Sept. 6 to 29. Known for her bright and bold work with acrylic paint, Dybikowski’s inspiration for the show came from near and far, she explained. Recent trips to Morocco, the Rocky Mountains and Vancouver set the stage, she explained, as well as her soft spot for the Nicola Valley. The exhibition will be a diverse one, she told the Herald. “This time I’m also doing a lot of still life,” she said. “I’ve certainly been caught up in looking at flowers differently and painting a lot of bouquets.” While she now boasts a broad repertoire of work spanning land-

scape, people and abstract scenes, Dybikowski explained she wasn’t always an aspiring artist. Her father and sister “had that area covered” while she was growing up, Dybikowski said. Everything changed one fateful day 10 years ago when she stumbled upon a water colour painting class in Merritt with Jean Kiegerl, she said, noting it was the first time she had really explored what would later become her passion. When asked what inspired her to take that class, she admitted she wasn’t sure. “In the end I didn’t like water colours,” she said, noting she appreciates the freedom acrylic paint gives her. “I did not like the extent of the planning you had to do — I prefer to be a little more spontaneous.” An opening reception for the exhibition is set for Sept. 7 at the Courthouse Art Gallery in Merritt from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The second straight season of severe wildfire conditions is a call to action for renewed efforts to deal with accumulated forest fuels around communities, Premier John Horgan says. Horgan spoke in Prince George Tuesday with federal Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan after a tour of northern B.C. fire zones. They emerged from a meeting with Terry Teegee, B.C. Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and Grand Chief Ed John of the First Nations Summit, whose community near Prince George has been evacuated for some time. “Over the decades, I don’t want to blame anyone, but we have not been cleaning our

SPEED SWIMMING

Asselstines top the field Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

The competitive swim season came to a triumphant conclusion for 23 members of the Merritt Otters swim team who competed at the 2018 BC Summer Swimming Association provincial championships from Aug. 17 to 19 in Surrey. The select group of swimmers earned the right to compete at the provincial championships by qualifying at the Okanagan championships earlier this month. Despite their smaller numbers, the Otters proved to be a force in the pool, collecting 13 medals in total. “Almost everyone swam best times,” said Otters head coach Gabe Lee. “We’ve struggled in the past getting up to race the fastest kids in the province but this year the Otters performed exceptionally well against the heavy competition.” Paige and Isaac

Asselstine continued their remarkable run of races in the pool, with both siblings collecting their fair share of hardware during the meet. Asselstine earned three individual medals, including a gold in the division 3 boys 50 backstroke. His other medals came in 100 I.M.

Asselstine also collected three medals, the highlight of which was her 200 I.M. swim where she was out-touched by 0.01 seconds for the gold medal. She would collect another silver in the 100 breaststroke event, just fractions of a second away from a gold

(silver), and 50 freestyle (bronze). Leading off the Okanagan’s regional relay team, Asselstine collected another gold in the final event of the weekend, capping off his season on top of the podium. Meanwhile, the elder

medal. Two Merritt Otters, Asselstine and Kendra Marklund, pushed the Okanagan’s division four girls regional relay team to a bronze medal finish. Earlier in the meet, Marklund’s prowess in the 50 freestyle event

powered her to the A final in the event, where she finished eighth. Merritt’s Cruz Slanzi also qualified for the A final in 50 backstroke for the first time in his young swimming career. The division three boy would finish eighth in the event. Meanwhile, both Otters coaches — Lee and Lauren Swistak — came away from provincials with some hardware of their own. Lee collected three golds and a silver, while Swistak picked up a gold medal in the 100 freestyle event. In total, Otters swimmers qualified for 34 finals, said Lee. “From here the team will just continue to try and get better. These swimmers have come a long way and I’m excited to see what they’ll be able to do in the future,” he said. “For now the season is over and everyone deserves some relaxing down time before the school year starts. Come May we’ll be getting ready to do it all over again.”

CLIMBING THE RANKINGS Six Merritt women took part in one of the largest crossfit competitions in North America this summer. Two teams of three competed in the scaled division at the CanWest Games at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam on July 28 and 29. The team of Keely Weymouth, Laurie Manning and Ashleigh Dawson finished 37th, while Kylee Street, Jordan Harwood and Serena Garcia lifted themselves onto the podium, finishing second overall. “Both teams put in as much work as they possibly could and I could not be more proud of each and every one of them,” said Street, owner of Persistence Personal Training. SPORTS JUNIOR HOCKEY

Cents coach set to return to Team Canada Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Merritt Centennials head coach Joe Martin will once again be pulling double duty this season, after being named to Team Canada West’s coaching staff for the 2018 World Junior A Challenge (WJAC). Martin served as an assistant coach during last year’s WJAC, where Team Canada West emerged as the champions over Team USA. The 2018 event is set to take place from Dec. 9 to 15 at the R.J. Lalonde Arena in Bonnyville, Alta. Martin, 37, began with the Cents in the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach, working alongside Luke Pierce. Martin took over the head coach and general manager role in Merritt starting in the 2015-16 season. The tournament features under-20 players from across the Junior A leagues in Canada, as well as a number of international teams. Ten of the 12 gold-medal games at

the World Junior A Challenge have featured at least one Canadian team.

Joe Martin

Centennials head coach

Team Canada West won gold at the first two tournaments, in 2006 and 2007, and also took home gold in 2011, 2015, and 2017. The team also won silver medals in 2008, 2009, and 2012, as well as bronze in 2013.

Staff shuffled as camp kicks off With the Centennials pre-season camp underway, the team announced a number of staff changes for the

upcoming season. Longtime athletic trainer Kim Penner will be stepping down from her role with the team to focus on her upcoming marriage and other opportunities outside of junior hockey, stated a news release from the Centennials organization. “I’ve known Kim since we recruited her to the Centennials in 2014, and since then she’s been a perfect example of what’s expected in the position. The players were always in great hands, and she was a pleasure to work with on and off the ice. The Centennials will miss her, but we are excited for what the future holds for Kim and her family,” said Martin. To fill the void left by Penner, the Centennials are adding two trainers for the upcoming season from the Merritt area: Tyler Wowchuk and Kelly Bartch. Wowchuk, a personal trainer who was born and raised in Merritt, will join the team as an athletic trainer and

strength and conditioning coach. Bartch is a retired RCMP officer who spent the majority of his career in Merritt. He will join the staff as an equipment manager and trainer. Meanwhile, assistant coach Brandon Shaw will assume new responsibilities for the upcoming season, taking over the role of director of scouting.

Cents sign allstar The Centennials bolstered their defence corps with the signing of Jaydon Fetter, who was named to the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s west all star team last season. In 45 games with the Leamington Flyers of the GOJHL, Fetter scored 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points. Martin doesn’t expect there to be much of an adjustment period for the bornin-’99 player. “The Merritt

Centennials are excited to have Jaydon and his family join us here. He’s got two years of experience in the GOJHL, he was a

leader, he was on the All Star Team, so even though he’s technically a rookie in our league, we consider this like trading for an expe-

rienced player,” said Martin. “We expect him to come in and be ready to slide into our defensive group pretty seamlessly.”

With heavy hearts and many fond memories, we regretfully announce the passing of our beloved father, son, and brother. Bruce lived life his own way and made friends everywhere he went. He also loved the outdoors, and spent GD\V ÀVKLQJ DQG H[SORULQJ Left to mourn him are his dearly loved sons, Darcy Clarke of Abbotsford and Bradley Crick of Nanaimo, his father, Barry Crick (Anita), of Lower Nicola, his mother, Irene Gouchie (Bill) of Clearwater, BC, his sister Kelly Purves (Brent) niece and nephew of Chilliwack, BC and sister Janna Archer (Steve) of Lake Errock, BC. He will also be missed by all his aunts, uncles and cousins, friends and special friend and landlord, Jagbir Arora. We will miss his big bear hugs, his sparkly eyes and his big smile.
