Merritt’s popular ‘Summer Nights Market’, which originally kicked off in 2018, faced an uncertain future when large gatherings were prohibited by the BC government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Ryan Wuthe, acting president of the Merritt and District Chamber of Commerce, believes there is a possibility for the market to go ahead as an ‘August Summer Nights Market’, which would see vendors set up Fridays on Quilchena Ave. until September.

“What we’re doing right now is just exploring whether this is a real possibility,” said Wuthe.

“What we’ve done is we’ve gotten support from the city, and then we canvassed the downtown businesses within that block where the market usually happens to find out what support we’d get from them, and they were supportive as well.”

The potential opening of the market was set for this weekend, but Wuthe acknowledges that this is fairly short notice for potential vendors, particularly those who have already been affected by shutdowns of markets and sales.

to see if we could actually get any vendors, it’s pretty short notice, pretty late in the season,” said Wuthe.

“I’ve already gotten some feedback from vendors that they don’t have the inventory, and it’s too short notice, so quite honestly if we have no vendors, we have no market. And then from there, it’s do we have the manpower? Do we have volunteers? There’s a certain amount of people to run this properly.”

From there, if enough interest is generated and there is a response from both vendors and the community wanting to move forward with the market, the safety planning and implementation of COVID-19 safety protocols would follow.

After that, if all that gets put into place then it’s, how do we design the market, so it is COVID safe, so it’s socially

responsible?” said Wuthe.

“There are some challenges that exist, obviously, in today’s circumstances to ensure that everybody is going to be safe and distanced properly, that we have the proper PPE in place, that we have handwash stations, all that kind of stuff. We haven’t really dove into it too hard at this point, what we’ve done is taken examples from other municipalities that have been working at farmers’ markets, we’ve also reached out and had conversations with our local farmers market,” Wuthe continued.

“And the City has some guidelines that we would follow, as well as the BC government. But before we went to those lengths and actually came up with a plan, for layout and everything, we need to know that we actually have interest.

If we have no interest, there’s no point in investing all that time and effort.”

Traditionally, the Nicola Valley Farmers’ Market sets up in conjunction with the Summer Nights Market, but this year several vendors have declined to return to either, citing health concerns, particularly as cases in BC begin to climb again.

“I’ve had a conversation with the farmers market, there wasn’t a large amount of interest there,” said Wuthe.

“There were maybe two or three vendors that would be willing, with some genuine concern of today’s circumstances, and COVID. It’s not easy, it’s been challenging, there’s definitely roadblocks that exist and there’s genuine concern in the community of, are we ready for this? I know the interest is there, the

community is craving for something to happen in a time when nothing is happening, but if we can’t do it safely and we don’t have the interest it just won’t happen.”

Wuthe and other members of the Chamber of Commerce are hoping for feedback from the community and from vendors that will help either establish the market for the tail end of the 2020 season, or postpone it until next year.

“We didn’t want to set it up in order to disappoint,” said Wuthe.

“We didn’t want to say, ‘this is happening’ and then, ‘oh by the way, now it’s not happening’.

Because without knowing the level of interest that’s out there, I know people are missing the market this year for sure, but we’re all constantly getting feedback of whether

For those interested in taking part if the market gets up and going for the rest of August, vendor fees have increased from $10 to $15 per table, something Wuthe says reflects the new cost of setting up safely.

“It’s $15 per table,” explained Wuthe.

“There were some questions as to why it had gone up, but we need to factor in that in today’s circumstances there may be some more costs involved in providing PPE, the handwashing stations and all that stuff. We know there’s going to

be some additional cost with setting it up.”

All types of vendors are welcome, from crafters and bakers, to household items and even food trucks, provided they carry their own insurance and have prepared a COVID-19 safety plan which aligns with the province’s regulations regarding food and dining.

Wuthe hopes that the market will move ahead, but notes that postponing does not necessarily mean the end of the event forever, there is always the summer of 2021, when we all hope we will have returned to some semblance of normalcy.

“We’re trying to do something for our little community,” Wuthe concluded.

After managing Marvellous Mutts for 13 years, Honeywell experienced her first major life change, and decided to put rescues temporarily on the back burner in 2015 while she reorganized and moved in a new direction.

“We closed for four years when my marriage broke down and I suddenly found myself on my own with four teenagers and no income.”

However, the dogs were always on Honeywell’s mind, and she knew that one day she would get back to doing what she loved and believed in.

“Once my life seemed back on track we reopened,” Honeywell explained.

Marvellous Mutts, a local dog rescue that has helped to rehome hundreds of dogs, and the occasional cat, is closing down – at least for now.

President of Marvellous Mutts, Margie Honeywell, has faced a tough year personally and has decided that as rewarding as it is to rescue four-legged friends and find them new homes, she needs to focus on herself and her family and step away from the pressures of running a dog rescue.

Marvellous Mutts got its start back in 2002, when Honeywell, who had gained experience working with Newbark Canine Rescue, decided to branch out on her own.

“I started as part of Newbark Rescue,” said Honeywell.

tion on her own, opting to take on Renae Green as Marvellous Mutt’s vice president.

“When we reopened Renae became vice president.

That was a year and a half ago, in 2019.”

From 2019 until now, Marvellous Mutts has rehomed more than 150 dogs. In total, since the rescue first started in 2002, more than 1,800 dogs have found new homes thanks to Honeywell and her team of devoted fosters, who care for dogs before they are adopted by their forever family.

Some of the dogs Honeywell and Green have saved include dogs from high-kill shelters in the United States.

Return to class: a new system We have been living in a brave, brave new world for some time now, haven’t we?

Who knows) months, we have had plenty of firsts. In June, we had Return to the Classroom Part 1: now in just under a month we will have Return to the Classroom Part 2, a sequel that promises to be even more of a blockbuster.

I sat down with Stephen McNiven, superintendent for our school district, for about a half an hour on Monday to try to get a feel on how Merritt’s school year would look like. This was for the paper in an article that will be in next week’s edition, as well as my own curiosity. I myself don’t have a kid going back to school, but I’ve often had it on my mind how big of an impact 2020 has had on the minds of our youngin’s.

I got from Steve, personally, a number of different vibes, but those that work well in tandem. There is both a sense of confidence and unknowingness: a pair that I’m sure is rampant in school staff and students.

While Steve and his staff certainly do not have all of the answers, no one does or never will it seems, they seem to be working diligently on a plan to most benefit all that will be back in the classroom in September.

Like all other plans in this pandemic world, it is one of fluidity that will change by the day, hour, minute.

No matter what side of the coin you fall on in sending your kid back to school, know SD58 is trying their best.

Blast just the latest in Lebanon meltdown

Beirut has been living with car bombs and air raids on a sporadic but continuing basis for so long that it would probably make sense to rebuild this time GWYNNE DYER with shatterproof THE WORLD glass. The torrent STAGE of broken glass falling from a thousand shattered buildings probably accounted for half the 158 dead found so far in Beirut, and certainly for most of the 6,000 wounded.

The Beirutis were not expecting a giant exploding warehouse, of course, but Lebanon has been cursed in so many other ways that in retrospect it seems almost inevitable. Fifteen years of brutal civil war, followed by thirty years of corrupt rule by the very warlords who ruined the country, ended Beirut’s claim to be the ‘Paris of the Middle East’ a long time ago.

the years, but it was always there. I even thought the end might be coming with Islamic State a few years ago, and took my wife there to see the old Lebanon (some of which still survived and was easy to love) before IS came over the mountains from Syria to destroy it all.

Another blow to my reputation as a prophet, and one I was happy to take. IS over-reached itself, and is gone. What finally did it for Lebanon was more banal: the deliberate looting of the country’s entire fragile economy, and the concealment of the proceeds in obscure foreign banks, by the few thousand people whom ordinary Lebanese contemptuously call the ‘political class’.

‘Warlords’ is the right name for them, although many are sectarian leaders whose pedigrees go back to Ottoman times. It is a country where old men and obsolete communal loyalties oppress the impoverished young. That is true of almost every country in the Arab world, of course, but in Lebanon’s case the only remaining route to a better future may lie through even greater violence.

The currency has collapsed, most people’s savings have been wiped out, the country has defaulted on its debt, and there are no jobs for the young.

There were huge non-violent street demonstrations last October, and the multi-party coalition government was forced to resign.

(The ‘parties’ are really the old militias renamed.) “All of them means all of them,” the demonstrators chanted – but all that really changed was the faces of the cabinet ministers. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

There is a lot of sympathy for the Lebanese, and foreign governments are willing to bail the country out of its troubles – but only on condition that the loans don’t just get pocketed by the same thieves in silk ties, and that there is complete transparency in banking and in government financial transactions.

Lebanon bailout dependent on reforms From Page 6 their past crimes would be exposed and future ones would become more difficult.

So, incredibly, the Lebanese government refused the loans even as families went without food. Then came the explosion on the waterfront, which was clearly the result of official incompetence at the very least.

An online summit of fifteen countries hosted by French President Emanuel Macron on Sunday pledged a quarter-billion dollars for immediate humanitarian aid to Lebanon. However, Macron made it clear that a $20 billion International

Monetary Fund bailout will depend on real reforms, including an audit of the central bank and regulation of the country’s capital markets. That is unlikely to happen voluntarily.

The demonstrators came out on the streets in force on Saturday, and by Sunday the army was there as well, firing live rounds into the air. The militias are out too, but so far they have left their weapons at home. The likelihood that this confrontation will be resolved peacefully?

Worse than ever, certainly.

The crisis might have been delayed another year without the explosion, but not more. Even Hezbollah,

Mask wearers feeling slighted

once violent but relatively honest, now also has its hand in the till, and popular outrage is huge. This time, the protesters are building mock gallows in the street.

The oligarchs have their backs to the wall, but they know that popular rage can often be drowned in blood in the Arab world. In the past decade it has been done successfully in Syria, in Egypt, and in Bahrain, so why not in Lebanon too?

Here’s why not.

Even if they win in the streets, the oligarchs still lose, because there is no economy left to plunder. And if they lose in the streets, they could easily end up on real gallows.

Editor, Hi there, This has been weighing on me for the past couple of days and I thought it was worth mentioning and perhaps passing on.

We travelled to Merritt a week or so ago for a small vacation. Because we were coming into a smaller community from Vancouver, we were very conscious of being careful and respectful due to the ongoing pandemic. As we’ve been told numerous times by the provincial health officer, it is very important to not bring covid into communities that may not have the infrastructure to deal with an outbreak. Being from Vancouver, we felt a duty to act as prescribed.

On our last day in Merritt we stopped at a local bakery cafe to pick up some supplies for the road. My husband and teenage son both wore masks into the bakery, even though they both felt a little self-conscious as no one else was wearing one. The masks were to protect the folks of Merritt that they may come in contact with as it was a small space.

As they stood in line, a woman with two children looked at them and snickered. Within minutes another woman looked at my husband and rolled her eyes and laughed. Both my husband and son were embarrassed and confused. And honestly, we’re all still a little confused.

We were visitors in your community and we were trying to be respectful and cautious. It would be terrible if we unknowingly brought covid to your community and caused an outbreak.

Anyways, I felt compelled to pass on our experience in the hopes that folks wouldn’t be shamed for trying to do the right thing when visiting your community.

ALBAS: New COVID-19 app could leave old tech in the cold There are times, despite efforts to the contrary, that government at all levels end up running into situations where there is a “no-win” scenario.

Case in point, DAN ALBAS recently the Trudeau VIEW FROM Liberal government THE HILL announced a federal application (or ‘app’) for smart phones, designed to assist in COVID19 contact tracing.

This app utilizes Bluetooth technology to exchange random phone codes whenever you are in close proximity to other users who are utilizing the same app on their cell phone.

In the event one of these users has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, all other app users who were in proximity to this individual can receive a confirmation alert.

In order to satisfy individual privacy concerns the app does not use GPS tracking, nor does

it record your identity or any of your personal identification.

Currently this app is fully functional for the purposes of contact tracing in the Province of Ontario, however it is my understanding that it will be coming to more provinces in the future.

There have been some criticisms of the app, largely around the fact it is only compatible with smart phones that are not older than five years and also have the latest operating systems from Apple or Android installed.

This leaves those with older devices, as well as those who do not use smart phones at all, out in the cold.

It may turn out that some will be unaware that the app does not work with their existing phone, only to become surprised when it becomes clear that it will not operate on their device.

The bottom line here is the app is not perfect.

From my perspective the government deserves credit for taking an innovative approach that has been successfully used in other jurisdictions.

public policy issues, it is only over time where further refining and enhancements of the technology can lead to widespread adoption and better results.

I have written to the Privacy Commissioner in regard to this and his office has created a privacy framework for reviewing any Government of Canada contact tracing app.

Recently Daniel Therrien, Privacy Commissioner of Canada, stated that “Canadians can opt to use this technology knowing it includes very significant privacy protections,” adding “I will use it.”

After having done the research for this report, and given my work involves a lot of travel and meeting various people at different kinds of Parliamentary meetings, I have chosen to install the app.

HAYING DELAYED BY WET WEATHER Excessive rains resulting in a wet summer are causing headaches for local ranchers who have faced difficulty getting their hay crops in. This compounds the issues already arising from flooding.

“The unprecedented heavy rainfall, according to some oldtimers, the heaviest in 25 years, has produced a heavy crop,” reads the Herald’s article on the subject.

“It is estimated a 125% hay crop this year, notwithstanding some losses from the flood. Tuesday night’s downpour, early in the evening in Merritt, struck Canford about midnight. A heavy crop of hay is reported, but it has not been touched for twelve days.”

Local ranchers are hoping for a traditional Merritt dry spell before rain spoils their hay.

Green space galore is on its way to the City of Merritt.

A lengthy new zoning bylaw was discussed at last Tuesday’s city council meeting at city hall, including proposed revisions that would see up tp six new areas designated for park use.

1902 Parker Drive will be

revised to rezone from Recreational Commercial to Park and Cemetery, which Merritt staff say is for the purpose of creating a neighbourhood park.

Other areas intended to create a new park by changing the designation include at the intersection of Government Avenue and Hill Street, and conservation areas to be designated along the Nicola River:

one is to be named Spring Bank Avenue Park, one Colin Island Nature Sanctuary, while a third along the river is yet to be named.

More revisions to the bylaw were laid out to provide other recreational opportunities within town, including enabling additional uses at Claybanks RV Park to include things like bike rentals or food concession stands.

Library opens, with restrictions The takeout service will also remain available for those that wish to continue utilizing it.

After five months, TNRD libraries are all opening to the public with restrictions.

The ThompsonNicola Regional District announced all thirteen libraries are

now reopened, including the one in Merritt.

There will be “limited service and extra safety measures,” according to a press release.

Here’s what you can expect at your next visit: - Occupancy limits are in effect at each location - Time limit – visits are limited to 60 minutes per day - Public washrooms are not available at this time - No food or drink is permitted in the library at this time

- Periodic or early closures for cleaning may occur Services available: - Internet sessions can be scheduled for up to 45 minutes - Pick up holds, and use the self-checkout - Be sure to check out our virtual programming, as in-library offerings are currently suspended - Library takeout service continues – a great alternative for those who have health concerns, or who have been enjoying the convenience of this new

“They need help the most. They get no second chances. If their time in the shelter is up, they are executed. Breed, size, and personality have no bearing.”

One of Honeywell’s most beloved dogs was, herself, a rescue from a high-kill shelter, who inspired Honeywell to open her heart and home to other canines who needed help.

“I adopted a dog, Maude, years ago from a high-kill shelter through Newbark,” Honeywell explained.

“She was the best dog I’ve ever had, although she started out as a stinker. She smoked, she would take your lit cigarette and take off, or gather butts. She’d sneak the gingerbread boys off the Christmas tree, sneak into the kids’ lunch kits, all kinds of things, but once she settled in, she was amazing.

Never could kick the smoking habit though!” Honeywell joked.

“That was before I became part of Newbark, I actually fostered for them before I kind of made a Merritt branch of Newbark.

Maude died of cancer and I promised her when she was dying that I would help as many dogs get out of the shelter she had come out of. I guess that was my only goal at the time.”

Honeywell once again couldn’t say for sure whether Marvellous Mutts would reopen at some point in the future, as it has once after a

temporary hiatus.

“I hope to reopen the rescue and help the dogs that need forever homes,” said Honeywell.

“Once I feel that the dust has settled in my life after six deaths this year, and I hope to find some closure for myself and family over my daughter Lalie. But presently my mind and heart are elsewhere, and I can’t seem to concentrate on rescues when I too feel in need of rescue.”

Honeywell’s daughter, Lalie Honeywell, went missing in May and is yet to be found.

The Marvellous Mutts Facebook group, which has grown to more than 4,100 members, will remain active, and the rescue will continue to take local surrenders if necessary.

“We will keep the group active for alumni photos and updates, and the very occasional local surrender,” said Honeywell.

“But there will be no foreign dogs or out-of-province dogs.

Renae and Lexi Stromberg will be handling that, and we don’t expect many. So, it should be very quiet.”

Both Honeywell and Green still look forward to seeing updates posted of dogs that they have helped over the years.

“Those updates bring a lot of joy to Margie and myself,” said Vice President Green.

“Just knowing all the hard work has paid off and to see the happiness in the dogs and their ‘furever’ family.”

Repeat winners at Cents Classic The best ball tournament went down at the Merritt Golf and Country Club last weekend.

The Centennials annual golf tournament went down at Merritt Golf & Country Club on Saturday, in slightly different fashion than past years.

A total of forty golfers took to the course, with spread out tee times instead of the usual shotgun start.

Burgers and fries were served afterwards in the clubhouse, where the day’s winners were announced.

The foursome of Greg Smith, Jarrod Smith, Richard Lee, and Chris Ryan had the day’s lowest score, taking home the trophy for the second year in a row.

Their shooting of nine-under was one better than the second place grouping of Craig Draney, David Garcia, Danny Morrissey, and Ryan Evardsen.

Centennials Business Operations Manager Jared Thomas said the event brought in about $5,500 for the team.

Recreation buildings reopening

With the summer in full swing, the Recreation Department is working with the Communications Department to get the word out that they are open for business.

The Aquatic Centre, including the gym inside the facility,

has now been open for two weeks. Merritt CAO Scott Hildebrand said the facility has seen a slight increase in usership, “as word of mouth spreads about it being open.”

Hildebrand said that the Civic Centre has been receiving plenty of calls for bookings each and every week.

“That’s starting to

get some momentum.”

The yoga and fitness classes have also seen a significant jump in participants, and continue to rise steadily.

As for the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, Hildebrand said staff are busy at work installing the ice and the board advertising in the facility, preparing for skating activities

to return.

“We’re looking at making sure we start getting that booked,” said Hildebrand about the advertising.

Of course, there will be COVID-19 safety measures in place when the rink opens, similar to the other recreation facilities in terms of social distancing and cleaning.

Parks and Recreations Manager Sky McKeown and his team are hard at work as well with a number of capital projects, including the replacement of the curling rink’s roof.

“Sky and his team have been working hard to keep them on time and on budget,” said Hildebrand.

Football players across Canada woke up to disheartening news last week.

The Canadian Junior Football League, which includes the B.C. Football Conference, Ontario Football Conference and Prairie Football Conference, has cancelled the 2020 season due to the pandemic.

“I think it’s totally the right decision,” Broncos’ general manager Jan Antons told KTW. “It all comes down to the health and safety of the players and, really, the government restrictions in B.C. of the 50 people for maximum gatherings.

“Now we are going to reach out to the players. Some of them are going to be in shock.”

Antons said the CJFL will conduct meetings in the coming days to discuss fallout, including how the lost season will affect player eligibility.

He said his feel is league brass is working to ensure players will not lose a year of eligibility, including those who were expected to graduate in 2020.

Out-of-town players are particularly hard done by, as some have secured jobs and

signed rental agreements in Kamloops.

“This is not easy,” Antons said. “We’ll have to see what their decisions are, if they are going to stick around or move back.”

Sponsorship, ticket sales and playerregistration dollars help keep the franchise afloat. In April, Antons told KTW the cancellation of the season would be the worst-case scenario from a financial standpoint.

The Broncos were cleared to begin modified training on July 13 and have since been practising five days a week.

Antons said the immediate plan is to continue training, but with a scaled-back schedule, perhaps two or three days a week, and to remain active in the community.

Scrimmages and intrasquad games seem likely to become possible when viaSport, the government agency for the delivery of sport in B.C., shifts into Phase 3 of its return-to-sport plan.

The agency’s sport activity chart indicates that is not likely to happen before September, but it seems safe to surmise the state of the virus in the province will determine the timing of the transition.

“It is very disap-

pointing to make this announcement today, but our priority is the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and team administrators,”

CJFL commissioner Jim Pankovich said in a press release.

Fashionista and beauty enthusiast Amanda Fredrickson moved to Merritt three years ago, and within a few months decided she wanted to expand on the available retail by launching an online shop that would offer trendy clothing at affordable prices to the community.

After gaining momentum with an online shop format, Frederickson decided to open a small storefront, called ‘Bee’s Knees Boutique’ on Quilchena Ave. It was there that Frederickson decided to expand on her business with an earlier passion: nail technology.

“My business originally started as clothing and that did fairly well, but I started adding personal services to the business starting with nails almost two years ago,” said Frederickson.

When she was given notice the storefront, she had been renting would no longer be available, Frederickson was faced with the choice to either shut down or move. Not ready to throw in the

Joan Gobin Dec. 17, 1934 - July 31, 2020

Mrs. Joan Gobin passed away peacefully at Merritt, BC on July 31, 2020 at the age of 85.

Survived by her loving husband Henry of 67 years.

She also leaves to mourn her children; Kathy, Diane, Denis and Jamie along with many grand children and great grandchildren.

The family moved here in 1974. Joan worked at the Coldwater Hotel for 25 years and volunteered at the thrift shop for over 40 years.

The family would like to thank the Florentine and the many individuals who helped mom through her journey.

On Saturday,Aug 1, 2020 Doug Paterson of Merritt, B.C. passed away peacefully in his summer home at the age of 74 years.

Doug will be forever loved and deeply missed by his wife of 53 years Catherine, his 3 children Shawn (Heidi) Paterson of Merritt, B.C. Corey (Kim) Paterson of Calgary, Alberta and Kim (Jim) Paterson of Merritt, B.C. His 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and 1 more on the way. Doug is also survived by his brother Dick (Evelyn) Paterson of Merritt, B.C. and sister Donna Wrigley of Prince George, B.C. as well as his 3 nieces and 1 nephew and many friends and relatives.

He was predeceased by his parents Don and Del Paterson, brother Derald Paterson, and brother-inlaw Bill Wrigley.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love of woodworking. Doug would always find a way to fix anything and if it could be made with wood he would make it.

Celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Nicola Valley Community Justice Services Society Job Openings

Community Outreach Workers The Nicola Valley Community Justice Services Society is seeking two motivated individuals to work as community outreach workers for the recently established Nicola Valley Indigenous Justice Centre.

The overall purpose of the Indigenous Justice Centre is to assist in reducing the over-representation of Indigenous clients in prison and children in care. It seeks to do so by providing support and navigation in criminal, youth justice and family court and alternative proceedings for Indigenous clients with low incomes and their communities. The Centre also provides services to Indigenous individuals transitioning out of prison.

The Nicola Valley Indigenous Justice Centre is part of an overall initiative through the BC First Nations Justice Strategy to not only enhance services for Indigenous clients facing the existing justice system but to “stand up” and reclaim Indigenous laws, institutions and dispute resolution processes.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong appreciation of the culture and values of the Indigenous populations of the Nicola Valley, and a strong understanding of the impacts of colonization on Indigenous individuals and communities. The position will require a significant amount of work in local Indigenous communities.

Print and Digital Editor The Columbia Valley Pioneer is looking for a full-time Print and Digital Editor for our news operation based in Invermere. We operate a daily news site - columbiavalleypioneer.com, and a weekly community newspaper serving ten communities in the Upper Columbia Valley. We also publish various speciality magazines produced on an annual basis.

The successful candidate works well in a team setting, but is selfmotivated. At present we have a staff of three in the newsroom plus various contributors. The magazines are typically produced by freelance contractors, but the magazine work has been significantly curtailed by the COVID-19 situation.
