M.S.S. Grad 2015
recognizing the Grad class of 2015 First of all I wish to acknowledge the teachers and staff that have contributed to getting all of these students where they are today. (YOUNG ADULTS). For us watching these students graduate is a lot like reading a good book. We are into the first 2 or 3 chapters and they have captured our imagination. We are hooked and ready to delve deeper into that book. For these students, THEY ARE WRITING THAT BOOK and all we can do is wait to see where it takes us.
So GRADS wether you decide to make this a suspense novel, a thriller, a love story or something that will become a history novel is up to you. All we can do now is watch and continue to support your path. No matter what path you choose we know you will be successful but don’t forget to also have a little fun along the way. On behalf of School District Board and this community congratulations and good luck. Gordon Comeau, Board Chair at School District 58

2015 Valedictorian speech Every good action and bad action will effect that image of us. In the long run, high school really doesn’t matter very much anyway what really matters, is being part of a community that supports one another. Good evening, parents, relatives of the grads, and other community members. My name is Levi Loewen, and I am here to deliver the Valedictorian Address. I just wanted to say thank you to a few people before I get started. Thank you to all my teachers at MSS for helping me along to where I am now. Thank you to Ms. Goetz for helping me with this speech, to Mr. Lawrence as our principle for all his inspirational jokes most days in the hallways. And lastly, to my parents for pushing me to greater heights than I ever though I could have achieved. By now, some of you are already drifting away from what I have to say. Some of you are probably playing on your phones or posting cap and gown selfies on Instagram. I just wanted to leave this thought with you, “Will you even remember my name after the speech?” And as for the rest of you, this speech is for the community as well as every grad. I want to take a moment to share with you my experiences with this community. As some of you may know, my Dad has had many health conditions. 2 organ transplants, as well as a heart attack and then open heart surgery between 2009 and 2012. This community came together not once but twice to support my family in our time of need. Two fundraisers were held at the Grand Pub and Grill to raise money to support my family while my Dad was in and out of the hospital with many years of recovery. Thank you to everyone who was a part of the fundraisers. Without you I don’t think I would be standing here in front of you the same man, I am today if at all here, presenting this
speech. For a small-town Merritt, we sure do have a great big heart, and I experienced it firsthand. There are other families that this community has come together to support in their time of need other than mine. Thanks Merritt. I am proud to call myself a Merrittonian. Now, back to our grad class. I have been watching countless YouTube videos and reading many articles on writing grad speeches over the last few weeks, stressing out over what this speech should say. Do you want to know what they all told me? They told me to tell a few corny jokes and a bunch of shout-outs to all my friends. So that’s exactly what I am going to do. Shout-out to the person who used their grandmother to keep their license. Shout-out to the person who failed their N test because of a fire drill. Shout-out to the people who put on the fake car accident a few weeks ago. Let me just tell you that when I first saw that accident, I was at first interested just like most people are by a car accident. The moment I realized who was in that car, it was like being hit by a bus. My friends, the people I have grown up with, and laughed with, I thought they were on their death bed. I will never forget that moment for the rest of my life. Shout-out to the young man who helped a disabled woman cross the street. Shout-out to the people who volunteer their time at the thrift shop, the Gillis house, and other public services. Shout out to the audience for listening to one of my jokes. So here it is everyone. “Once there was this head, and all he was was a head. Just the neck up and nothing else.
Anyways, one day, a genie appeared to this head and said he would grant one wish for this head. Well naturally, this head wished for a full body. So poof! He was a full man now. So this guy was so excited, he started running around testing out his new body. He was running so fast, he ran right out into the street and boom! Got hit back a truck and killed… The moral of the story is stop while you’re a head.” Thanks dad. And lastly, shout-out to every grad who is going to university for a bachelor’s degree in spending all their parents’ money. Next, I wanted to highlight a few events that happened this year: All of our horrible grad pranks for starters. How we egged ourselves when we camped out in front of the school. When everyone put their phones in the lockers and set an alarm all for the same time. When there was pairs of underwear with every guy’s name on it taped to the walls all around the school. When we lost a battle-of-the-grades to the Grade 8’s, first time ever by the way. How we all thought at the beginning of the school year we weren’t going to graduate because school wasn’t going to start. How no one has done a big, dramatic promposal yet…you still have time guys. When we gave lap dances and seduced all the students and teachers when they walked by in the main entrance during the grad kidnapping… and then Ms. Barisoff walked by. Now, I’m going to bring it back to Elementary School, more specifically Collettville.
And for the rest of you, I just wanted to highlight some of the dumb games we used to play. Girls chase boys and then boys chase girls when they caught us. How everyone used to eat dandelions and grass in the field. How when girls laugh, they touch their noses with their finger. PS, you all still do that when you laugh. Now looking to the future, we all now have to grow up and do adult-like things. Some of those things may include: ordering pizza by yourself, answering the phone without hiding, learning how to kill a spider; for some of you, match socks, not burn toast and how to buy shampoo and toothpaste. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know, but anyways. If you noticed a pattern with the different shout-outs that I said earlier, they were all different individual actions that effected the overall perception of our grad class, also us as a group of teenagers and young adults. Every single action a person does is judged by those around that person, and those judgments are frequently transferred onto teenagers in general. I want everyone here to keep in mind for the future that your actions effect what the world thinks of teenagers and graduates. Every good action and bad action will effect that image of us. In the long run, high school really doesn’t matter very much anyway what really matters, is being part of a community that supports one another. Now some of us are going off
to university in various parts of the country or even out of country, and I just wanted to leave you with this story by Lance Jabr. It really captures what we’re all feeling. Let’s say you’re a young guy doing what all young guys do. You’re looking for that perfect girl. So you travel all around the country looking for that one girl. Now, in your travels, you meet plenty of good girls but none of them are quite right. Some are too nerdy, too high maintenance or not chill enough. But finally, you meet that one girl you’ve been looking for. She’s smart, sexy, chill, and charming. You’re so deeply in love with this girl that you decide to propose to her but you don’t know how to do properly. You’re so nervous and you keep putting it off, so you decide to set a deadline for yourself to propose. Finally, that deadline comes, and you put in your proposal. There’s nothing more you can do but wait and see what she says. So she turn to you, smiles and says “Mmm, let me get back to you in four months.” That’s what applying to university is like. You just forgot to tell her that you applied to a dozen other side chicks as a backup. Now going back to the first question I asked you, “how many of you will remember my name after today?” And in closing, thank you to all the parents of the grads and to everyone for listening to my Valedictorian Address. I would like to commemorate the integrity of this class and congratulations to the MSS Graduating Class of 2015! ~Levi Loewen, Valedictorian

Honoring Our Graduates MSS Grad Speech 2015
Good Evening. On behalf of the School District and the Ministry of Education I would like to Welcome you to this year’s graduation ceremony and thank everyone for being here on this very special occasion. I would also like to start with what is most important and that is passing on our congratulations to the graduates of 2015. Graduates I had a speech completed for tonight a week ago and to be honest I was feeling great about it. As I often do I shared it with people I trust and they told me that it needed to be more positive and that it needed to be better. You are probably wondering why I am telling you this, but I want to assure you that it connects to the message I want to give you. The message contains two pieces of advice. First, I encourage you to go forward, wherever that may be with a growth mindset. We often think we are what we are. Things are what they are. Speeches can’t be improved. We even mistakenly believe that the strengths and weaknesses we have are set and we must navigate the world with those qualities. Graduates you have reached an important milestone that we are celebrating
tonight and you have grown and have a lot to offer. I have had the pleasure of knowing some of you as early as Kindergarten and one of you from birth. There is no doubt in my mind that you are going make a difference, some of you already have. But my advice is to have a growth mindset because we can always be better. I can write a better speech, you can be better musicians, better mechanics, better athletes, better doctors, or better friends; we can all grow and be better people. My second piece of advice is find people you trust and listen to them. When they tell you something you don’t want to hear like your speech can be better that is probably the time you should listen most closely. That voice may be the one that reminds you that you can raise the bar. It is also the one that will likely support you when you have self-doubt or make mistakes. Be open to criticism and advice but be confident as each one of you are fantastic and you will make a difference. In closing I want to tell you how proud I am of your accomplishment and on behalf of School District 58 and the Ministry I wish you the best of luck in the future.
~ Steve McNiven, SD58 superintendent
