The TNRD has announced a proposed Mosquito Surveillance and Reduction Pest Management (PMP). “This Pest Management Plan (PMP) will serve as a strategic management tool that will allow for the effective reduction of larval mosquitoes within specified mosquito surveillance and reduction areas of the ThompsonNicola Regional District including all public, private and First Nations Reserve lands by permission of the applicable owner, agent or authority,” reads a statement on the TNRD website. If the program moves ahead the TNRD will apply pesticides to reduce mosquitoes with designated mosquito surveillance and reduction areas in Electoral Areas A, B, J, L, M, N, O

The proposed duration of the program will be from Mar. 1, 2021 to Feb. 28, 2026. The pesticides applied will include varieties of Vectobac, VectoLex, Aquabac, Mosquito Dunks, and Altosid. These are all larvicides, which affect mosquito larvae and not adult mosquitoes. Adulticides will only be used under order from a Medical Health

Officer from the Interior Health Authority or the Government of BC. A variety of different methods will be utilized to apply the pesticides, including backpack applicators, granular spreaders, and helicopters or fixed-wing aircrafts. “All mosquito surveillance and reduction activities will be undertaken in a manner that minimizes risk to the environment and human health,” continues the TNRD website. The TNRD currently carries out mosquito reduction within Electoral Areas J, L, M, O and P; within a

10km radius surrounding and including the community of Blue River; Electoral Area N, excluding the area around the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area; and a portion of Electoral A, with the exception of Wells Gray Provincial Park. “This PMP addresses all required elements of a PMP as outlined in Section 58 of the BC Integrated Pest Management Regulation.” Those who wish to contribute information about a proposed treatment site relevant to the PMP may send copies

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS WINTER WEATHER

Merritt’s snow clearing program to be discussed at January council Merritt CAO Sean Smith released a lengthy open letter on Tuesday detailing past and future snow clearing efforts. Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

On Dec. 21, 2020, Merritt received 44cm of snow in a 14-hour period - an almost unheard of number in Merritt’s history. Needless to say, the Public Works team was overwhelmed with clearing efforts. Twelve more centimetres

fell over the next week, complicating efforts. On Tuesday, Merritt CAO Sean Smith released an open letter indicating just how the City plans to address such an issue if and when it arises again. “Many people have suggested that the amount of snow over the past couple weeks was ‘normal’.

That assertion is not correct,” said Smith. “We fell behind and never caught up. We were not well enough prepared for the snow volumes that we saw and that resulted in poor sideroad and sidewalk conditions. These conditions had negative impacts on the City as a whole, but especially on seniors and those with mobility restrictions. For all of this, I am sorry.” Smith added that Merritt does

not currently budget for the same as communities that annually receive more snowfall. Merritt’s snow clearing budget is $106,000. Our average snowfall depth in the highest month is 5cm. Comparing that to other communities of roughly the same population: Trail, which has a snow clearing budget of just over half a million, has an average snowfall depth of 31cm. Revelstoke, whose population is almost identical, has

Skiing death at Big White Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

A 57-year old woman has been pronounced dead after a report made at Big White ski resort. West Kelowna RCMP released a statement Tuesday along with the BC Coroners Service confirming the deceased. On January 2nd, 2021, at approximately 4:17 p.m., emergency crews rushed to the Big White

ski resort in response to a 911 emergency call for a report of a deceased woman. Police learned that the woman had been skiing and failed to meet her group. Upon finding the woman in a wooded area, CPR was immediately performed, though the woman was unable to be resuscitated. “Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the woman

a whopping budget that fits its average snow depth of two feet in the highest month. “These communities all see much more snowfall, snow has a tendency to stick around and they have much larger snow clearing budgets,” said Smith, who added that that doesn’t mean there is some-

thing to learn from the more ‘winter communities.’ Smith said that there are two directions the City can go in: “First, we could ramp up our inhouse snow clearing program to be able to better handle this type of extreme situation. Like those communities that deal with this

on a yearly basis, we would need to acquire more equipment and hire more staff. Second, we can modify the current system so that during events where we simply cannot keep up, we call in support from local contractors to build our snow clearing capacity and provide around the

clock service that residents expect, even in adverse conditions.” Smith said this option will still add cost and is subject to contractor availability. Jan. 12’s regular council meeting will see councillors debate the topic. It can be watched virtually at www. merritt.ca.

passed away. At this time, criminality is not suspected in her death.” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the victim during this difficult time.” Due to the privacy of the deceased and her family, neither RCMP or the BC Coroners Service will be revealing her identity. No other information is available at this time.

EDITORIAL

Crazy year for Herald reporter Back in Oct. 2019, in those blissful times before we had ever heard of ‘COVID-19’, I started doing some freelance work for the MORGAN HAMPTON Herald, submit- HERALD ting articles and REPORTER photos as a contributor. From there, I was given the opportunity to take up a full-time position as the reporter, which I did – with a little encouragement from those already on staff. My first official day was Jan. 27. On Jan. 29 I published an article regarding the press conference held by Adrian Dix and Dr. Bonnie Henry announcing the first case of COVID-19 in the province. It was ominously headlined ‘Coronavirus touches down in BC’. At the time, no one in the office thought much of it, including myself. But in the weeks, and months that were to come, we were to have our lives turned upside down by this virus and the restrictions put in place to attempt to contain it. By the beginning of March, I had been sent home, where I worked until the middle of June in respect to the province’s lockdown orders. Meaning that in my first six months I was working from home for longer than I had worked in the office, coping with a brand-new position in a brand-new field during an unprecedented global pandemic. Even when I returned to the office, most events had been cancelled or postponed. Interviews took place via email or over the phone, any held in-person are somewhat awkwardly conducted through masks, plexiglass and bottles of hand sanitizer. And yet, the Herald keeps going. There are still pages that need to be filled with new content each week. I tell you sincerely that it has been a case of sink or swim. So, has 2020 been a downright See ‘PUTTING’ Page 7

Trump supporters may want a win at any cost Editor, I seriously doubt that most of Trump’s ardent supporters truly believe that, as they adamantly insist, he won the election but was cheated from his victory due to (not little but) massive electoral fraud—a claim they cannot factually support. Just the loss on its own seems to be proof enough that a vast ballot-fraud conspiracy had occurred. Meanwhile, they’ll vehemently deny that any form

of electoral fraud may have unjustly put Trump into the White House four years ago. To me, it’s mindboggling and scary. Might it be that the said group of Trump supporters consciously or subconsciously believe that he MUST remain in office for some perceived greater good—notably to save America and make it great again—regardless of his democratically-decided election loss, and all those in the majority who voted against Trump (which should not at all

Although I’m not equating Trump to Hitler, etcetera, the most frightful example of that philosophical justification is the genocidal pogrom, the implementers of which know they’re committing mass murder yet still genuinely perceive it all as part of an ultimately greater good. Some years ago, at the start of a year, a full-page newspaper ad by a national business magazine had this headline: “Out where the new begins.” Underneath was the story of a successful marketer of heavy machinery who joined a new company to sell metal fabricating machines, and in so doing introduced a new approach to the problem of successful marketing. The story is incidental, but the headline appealed to me because I know, as every spiritually transformed Christian knows, that out where the new begins is not Windsor or Sudbury, Detroit or Silicone Valley, but where a person meets Jesus Christ. Into the above realm of radical spiritual newness, each of us has been or can be brought. Jesus expressed this imperatively when He said: “You must be

Putting 2020 in the rear-view From Page 6 crazy year? Certainly. Do I

regret taking this leap into journalism? Certainly not. Through this

born again” (John 3:7). The Apostle Paul says conditionally: “If anyone is in union with Christ, he is a new being; the old state of things has passed away; there is a new state of things” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Does the phrase “in union with Christ” puzzle us? To many, the words are meaningless which indicates that the new life has never invaded them. Yet these same people seem to understand when saying we’re in politics, business, or advertising. If a person says that he is in politics, for example, we realize that politics has become the ruling interest, the controlling passion of his life. We know that in his absorption in politics may be found a decision and a commitment. The decision was to make politics his career to the exclusion of other careers, and this decision was followed by his commitment of himself – his time, energies, and training – to this chosen field of action. Of what does this so-called ‘newness’ consist? St. Paul’s answers deserve our three-fold considerations. It is a new relationship to God: “Now all things are of God who from God reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:18). The Bible is blunt and stubborn in its insistence that mankind is in rebellion against God. This rebellion, curiously enough, is not primarily against the idea of God or against a sentimental recognition of God. It is fundamentally against the reign of God, the

control of God, the will of God. This rebellion is the fruitful source of all sorts of evil, conflict, strife, anxiety and frustration. Man, having moved over from his true centre in God to a false centre in himself, finds that nothing comes out right. He is an alien in a world where he should feel at home. He is a warrior in a world where he should be a peace maker. He is a slave in a world where he should be free. He is a fool in a world where he should be wise. He is time’s vagabond in a universe where he should be eternity’s pilgrim. The glory of the gospel is that in such a confused world as this a Cross has been erected. And at that Cross the most wonderful thing in all the range of human experience takes place. In the centre of the whole experience of change from year to year, is a new relationship to God – reconciliation – which has come through our acceptance of His Son as our Saviour. Let us consider, in addition, that to be born anew in Christ means a new regard for others. If we look at human beings through the eyes of sinful, selfish, bigoted men, we get one view. But look at human beings through the eyes of Jesus Christ, and get a very different view. Paul is saying that when we base our concern for people on their poverty or wealth, we are not judging them with a Christian appraisal. If we base our concern on their being of a certain colour, whether black or white

or otherwise, we are not judging them according to the mind of Christ. From the Christian point of view the most significant thing about people is that they are people – not that they are clever or stupid, not that they are Caucasian or Black, not that they are on “welfare” on the social register or bosses, but that they are creatures of the Lord God Almighty. Appraising man by man’s manufactured standards is dangerous. It is a flowing spring whence come many poisoned streams. Paul tells us those who belong to Christ’s new creation have a new reason for living: “For the love of Christ controls us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14). Almost anyone can tell us his reason for making a livelihood, but few can tell us his reason for living. We make a livelihood in order to put food on our tables and clothes on our backs. But that doesn’t make a life. A new relationship with God, a new regard for others – these are some of the revolutionary novelties, as enduring as they are excellent, that one finds “out where the new begins.” Have you found it so? If not, there is a new life waiting for you now and into 2021. It is not in a sermon, nor in a church. It is in Christ. Take him. Open your being to him. Trust him. “He who believes in the Son has eternal life…” (John 3:36) in 2021 and beyond. Narayan Mitra is the Pastor of Merritt Baptist Church.

job I’ve had a chance to get to know this community on a completely different level. I learn something new every day, and bring that knowledge to the public, good or bad. People open up and share their stories with me, showing a remarkable trust

passionate work at rodeos, music festivals, dance recitals and whatever else the little town of Merritt has to offer. I really have to extend a heartfelt thank you to those I work with for guiding me along the way and helping to keep me sane and on my toes

Theresa, whose laid-back attitude and years of experience helped make the transition from working for myself to working for a company relatively painless. And although Michele ended up leaving the Herald team shortly after I started, I have wondered what

and faith in me to then take those stories out into the world, hopefully helping them in the process. Although I haven’t had the opportunity to attend many events, I look forward to interacting with organizers and attendees and seeing people do their most

it would be like to have her back at the desk next to me during this modern-day plague. So, I’m putting 2020 in my rear-view and, while I look forward to watching it disappear into the past, I can’t say that this year has been terrible overall.

All the best for the new year. Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy 2021.

Here’s to moving in the right direction in 2021.

From the Herald archives: Jan. 2009 TWO MORE ARTISTS CONFIRMED FOR FEST They’ll be coming ‘round the mountain in July… Two Canadiangrown boys were just added to the 17th Annual Merritt Mountain Music Festival roster. Paul Brandt headlines on Thurs. July 9, and George Canyon is the Sunday headliner. Brandt hit the scene in ’96 with his debut album Calm Before the Storm, and he hit it hard. He’s now the most awarded Canadian country music artist in history. He’s also been nominated as Alberta’s Citizen of the Year.

FRIENDS & Neighbours First 2021 art show coming this month

Meal program helping seniors in need

From Page 3 show can be small to large, but still need to be ready to hang. So, you may have something already framed, or that hangs up somehow. Or props on an easel. We can also accept 3D pieces if you have ideas for how it could be created for public art, say a wood carving, or inset stone.” Space for the show is limited, but at least a couple dozen pieces will be needed, with other submissions kept in mind for ongoing and future street art and shows. For this show it is not necessary to submit previously unshown art - artists who have already had a particular work displayed at the Arts Gallery are welcome to resubmit it, provided it will translate well to street art. The show, titled ‘Street Art!’, will run from Jan. 13 to 31, with a COVID-safe reception tentatively planned for Friday, Jan. 20. Collection for this show will be Mon. Jan. 11 from 12p.m. to 4p.m. at the Art Gallery’s new location on Voght St. next to the Kekuli Café. Regular Art Gallery hours will resume following the holidays on Fri. Jan. 8. Two more community Art Shows have been scheduled for later in the year, following ‘Street Art!’. From Feb. 3 to Mar. 3, 2021 the Arts Gallery will host ‘Art of COVID’, a working title that reflects how creatives may

have been putting their time to good use during the pandemic. “What creativity have you been up to during this time of COVID?” the Gallery asks. “Lots of people have been spending way more time at home and we want to see how you have been artinspired over the last months. Has COVID-19 given you time to work on your favorite art expression? Or have you tried a new art or craft during this time?” Submissions of wall art, mixed

media and 3D art, fibre art, written word, music and digital works will be accepted, with collection for the show on Feb. 1, 2021. The third community show will centre around every day, wearable art. ‘Art of Clothing’ will run from Jul. 28 to Aug. 29. “Are you a clothes designer? Or wish you were one because you have fashion ideas? Are you a screen printer, sewer, beader, crocheter, leather worker? Do you love creative fashion? We are inviting local creatives to get

ready for a Gallery Show all about the art of what we wear.” Collection for this show will be on July 26. Also in the works is a show centred on body art, including local and cultural designs for tattoos, henna, body work and possibly hair and nail design as well. The COVID-19 pandemic has not slowed down the NVCAC, and they are hard at work putting together a new year of art for Merrittonians to create and enjoy.

Mary Holgate of Mary’s Catering has launched a new program to help seniors in the community receive healthy meals at a reduced cost. “During these difficult times I am sure we all know a senior or a shut-in who has not benefited from the COVID relief money,” said Holgate in a social media post. “Many seniors have poor health because they do not eat properly, they find it hard to cook for one person or physically difficult.” Knowing that seniors were struggling inspired Holgate to start ‘Dinner for Seniors’, which will see a delivery of 20 meals per month to elders in need. The cost of the meals is $120, of which $60 is paid for by the senior and the other $60 is sponsored.

“This is a very affordable option for them, maybe even allowing them to keep a bit more of their pension cheque,” said Holgate. “This is much cheaper than them trying to buy groceries as I don’t think you could buy groceries for $60 a month.” Holgate, who suffered a heart attack herself several years ago, knows the importance of nutritious, heart-healthy food, which is precisely what she plans to deliver to those who may not be eating properly due to lack of funds, ability or desire to cook for just one person. According to Holgate, many seniors have already reached out to her hoping to take part in the program, and more sponsors are needed. If you are in need of home-cooked meals, or wish to contribute funds to sponsor meals, reach out to Mary via her personal Facebook page, or her business page ‘Mary’s Catering’.

More than 100 Merrittonians were treated to a delicious Christmas dinner, thanks to the ‘Christmas with a Difference’ initiative put together by the Merritt Golf

and Country Club, the Merritt Centennials and the Love to Dance Academy. According to Vanessa Van Rensburg, one of the organizers, planning and preparation began six weeks before Christmas. Over 200 Christmas gifts and traditional Christmas crackers were collected from the Merritt Golf Pro Shop, V22 Photography, Maria’s Creations, TS Art, and Miss Vicki’s Petals and Plants, then wrapped and paired with dinners. In addition, the Cents donated 200 2021/22 season game

The Merritt Centennials will be represented as NHL clubs open training camps in preparation for the season. Three Centennials will be looking to impress at their respective camps to crack the roster or make their team’s taxi squad. Defenseman Josh Teves (2014-15)

will join Vancouver Canucks camp. He registered five goals and 35 points in 61 games in his lone BCHL season before heading off to Princeton to play with the Tigers. There he totaled 16 goals and 85 points in 126 games over four seasons, and signed with the Canucks in 2019. He will have some stiff competi-

tickets. Mmes. Shu, Isaac, Niehaus, Nel, Hogan, Martin, Puga, Negrin, Orango and a Mr. Cotrell threw on their aprons and headed to their kitchens to bake more than 1,000 pies and cookies. “Littlest Elf Kate spent days preparing, wrapping and packing gifts while Chef Ryan prepared and cooked for two days straight,” said Van Rensburg. “Let’s not forget the prep team of peelers, Team Doug, Ross, Marg, and Bryon. Lizette from The Love To Dance Academy

tion on the Canucks blueline, but has played steady in the AHL and ECHL. Forward Brandon Duhaime (2014-15) will head to Minnesota Wild camp. Also suiting up for a season, Duhaime had six goals and 25 points in 56 games with the Cents. He made a stop in the USHL before going to Providence where he had 22 goals and 72 points in 117 games, before signing with the Wild after his junior year in 2019. In his first year in the AHL

spent a few days setting up, and preparing for distribution on the day of with Elf Aiden.” The event was inspired by the fact that many would be alone during the holidays as the pandemic rages on, suspending travel, family visits, and community events and dinners. “Ultimately this planet will continue to spin, and so we need to continue to live life to the fullest, even if it looks a little different sometimes,” said Van Rensburg. “I am not a fan of ‘it is what it is’ but more so of ‘it is what you make

with the Iowa Wild he’s scored six goals and 20 points in 63 games. The Wild are known for their defensive depth, but under new General Manager Bill Guerin there’s been a shake up and Duhaime may be able to find a way into the lineup. Goaltender Cole Kehler (2015-16) will join his hometown Winnepeg Jets after signing a part time offer on Christmas Eve. After a season with the Kamloops Blazers, Kehler joined the Cents and had an 18-24

of it’ and that was our main aim. To make Christmas as wonderful as we possibly could for those we touched with this small gesture. ‘No time for COVID’ are words that leave my lips on a daily basis.” Despite a terrific snowfall that hampered movement on the highways and town streets, the Cents and other volunteers turned up for deliveries without a complaint, ensuring dinners were at recipients’ doors between noon and 6 p.m. on Dec. 25. “A little snow has never stopped a Christmas Elf, and the delivery Elves were out in full force,” assured Van Rensburg.

record with a .898 SV% and a 3.84 GAA. After getting dealt to the Portland Winterhawks he earned a contract from the LA Kings in 2017. He’s since played primarily in the ECHL and may be a bit of a hometown long shot, but should the Jets run into injury trouble he may have a chance. The Centennials would like to wish their alumni well as they set out to crack the NHL rosters. The season will commence on January 13.

“John and Brodi, Sydney and Nathan, Kelly and Heather, Rusty and Betty, Guy and Kevin, Andrew and Britt, Jack and Lesley… we couldn’t have done it without them! Bags for transportation were supplied by Extra Foods. The gift of joy was not only given to 107 Merrittonians by Merrittonians, but was also received by all those involved.” Indeed, several of those treated to Christmas dinner had nothing but rave reviews to offer. “What a feast!” exclaimed a recipient named Janet. “It arrived on time with all the trimmings done up in little pack-

ages wrapped up by busy little hands so carefully. We felt truly spoiled, and have dinner for Boxing Day as well. Truly more than we expected. Three cheers to the Chef and the Elves!” “We are so excited to start eating, it looks amazing,” said another named Katelin. “It was awesome and I’m just happy to be a part of it,” said volunteer Rusty. “Syd, Vanessa and Ryan truly put their hearts into this. Thanks also to the Van Rensburg kids who played at the golf club during the Christmas Day while their parents cared for others in the community.”

The Merritt Herald is changing up the way we do the community board. With all events being cancelled throughout the area we thought it would be nice to feature some local businesses. If you would like to nominate a business to be featured please email: publisher@merrittherald.com We want to help all businesses survive this pandemic.

Business Feature

Lexi Stromberg has opened the doors on her fullservice doggy day care, welcoming your four-legged friends into her home where they will be treated as one of the family. “What inspired me to start this business up is my own dogs,” said Stromberg. “I always had trouble finding someone knowledgeable and trustworthy to watch my dogs while I would go away. I searched everywhere for someone who would get them the exercise, love, and attention they needed

daily at a price that wouldn’t break the bank for me.” They say that the most successful businesses come from recognizing a need and then coming up with a way to fill it, which is precisely what Stromberg did in launching Lexi’s K-9 Services. “We provide a home away from home for your beloved pet, where they’re treated like family, able to socialize safely, and get all of their mental and physical needs met under the 24/7 supervision of myself,” said Stromberg. For Stromberg,

the decision to move into a professional life surrounded by canines was easy, since her love for dogs already filled a significant part of her personal life. Stromberg and her partner relocated to Merritt about a year ago, along with their three-year-old German Shepherd, Hugo and their year-and-a-half old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, Hank. However, prior to this, Lexi spent her summers at her aunt’s, where she learned the ins and outs of canine care. “As a kid, I

1750 Hill Street ■ Phone: 250-315-3000 spent my summers with my aunt who ran her own dog boarding and daycare facility all of her life,” explained Stromberg. “I spent my summers helping her and learning about everything needed to be able to run this business safely, and learning all about different breeds and how to read their body language to make sure everyone plays safely and kindly. And to know when and how to de-escalate situations if needed.” Lexi has put her knowledge to good use since arriving in the Nicola Valley, volunteering with a local rescue and helping rehabilitate troubled dogs and find those in need a ‘fur-ever’ home. Although not a dog trainer, Stromberg has done her best to help dogs any way she can. “I have been volunteering with a local rescue, working with dogs with behavioural issues and solving those issues before they are rehomed to their forever families,” said Stromberg. Although she

does not want to violate the privacy of these pups’ new owners, she did remark on one special case that she was proud of. “One that stood out to me was my latest, Lily, a fouryear-old Pitbull,” said Stromberg. “She came into the rescue terrified of men, and with dog aggression issues. With a ton of love, patience, and direction, over the course of a couple months she was able to happily live and co-exist with a pack of dogs safely and politely. She also started to seek out attention wherever we went from all different kinds of people, including men after a few positive experiences. She turned out being the friendliest dog I have ever met!” Lexi’s partner Tatum, a hairdresser at Cookie Cutters , even took Lily to work, which provided her with positive interactions and all the care and attention she needed to thrive. At Lexi’s K-9 Services, all dogs are welcome, with the only requirements being up-to-date

vaccinations, being spayed or neutered if over a year old, and have no dog aggression issues. There is no breed discrimination, and all dogs are provided with mental and physical stimulation and justlike-home care. “We have a spacious and extremely clean gravelled yard, six-foot-high solid fencing, always fresh new toys to
