Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM After a three year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Community Airport Day is taking off once again, welcoming Merrittonians to celebrate aviation and come together as a community after a tough few years. This year, Merritt’s Community Airport Day will feature all the staples of its first event, plus performances by local artists, food trucks, a classic car show, and a special ceremony to show appreciation for those who assisted the City during the November 2021 flooding event. The first annual airport event in 2019 was held as a celebration of a key moment in Merritt aviation history. “This started about four years ago when a friend of mine, Ray Robinson, heard from the museum that it was going to be the 100th anniversary of the first plane ever to land in Merritt,” said Geoff Scholtens, organizer and volunteer with Community Airport Day. “He said we should celebrate that, so I said what we should do is a Community Airport Day, because I’m all about community. I’m also a pilot, so I thought we should bring this whole com-

munity together to celebrate.” The 2019 Community Airport Day drew a crowd of roughly 500 people, gathering to celebrate and watch a flyin, enjoy a community barbeque, and browse the car show. Sponsored by the City of Merritt and its Tourism Merritt program, the event was organized by Scholtens and volunteers. This time around, the event is still organized by Scholtens, but this time in collaboration with Tourism Nicola Valley. The local tourism non-profit is promoting and sponsoring the event, and will provide a community barbeque in addition to the planned food trucks. Scholtens says the event will be bigger and better than ever, featuring remote controlled aircraft, antique cars, airplanes, two local bands, food trucks, and speeches by dignitaries. “I think it’s awesome that we can actually get together face to face, see old friends, meet new friends, and be a community again. One of the things is that Merritt doesn’t have many events where people can just come and be who they are,” said Scholtens, a pilot and certified flight instructor. One of the focuses of this year’s

Community Airport Day is showing appreciation for those in aviation who supported the City of Merritt during November’s flooding event. Pilots flew in over 400,000 pounds of supplies needed for flood response and recovery, many of them volunteering their time and resources. Members of the West Coast Pilot Club and BC Airlift Emergency Response Operations (BC AERO) will attend the event to receive this thanks. “The Mayor and MLA Jackie Tegart are giving out letters and certificates of appreciation to the pilots who flew in back in November. We’ll be sharing our thanks for the help.” Leading up to the event, Scholtens says his phone has been ringing off the hook with questions about the event. Scholtens has flown since he was 15 years old, and is currently teaching both his children to fly. He added that aviation truly does ‘fly’ in the family. Community Airport Day will take place on Saturday, July 16, from 10am to 3pm at the Merritt Airport, located at 4510 Airport Road. Autumn Quewezance

Just for Laughs Merritt Last week I attended a standup comedy show in Merritt. I know, hard to believe, right? I feel MARIUS AUER like I’m HERALD in the big REPORTER city, going to events after 6pm. All jokes aside, it was a fun evening of some good laughs, great crowd work, and a relaxed atmosphere. Taking place at the Empty Keg Brew House, Nash Park’s ‘OK, Dope’ comedy tour featured three comedians, all impressive in their quick wittedness and ability to adapt their humour to the small town audience. All in good fun, their sets included jokes aimed at relaxing an audience and poking fun at tough situations. Response was great, with the crowd laughing and engaging the comedians through the two hour show. Hosted by Nash Park, who was joined by Kelowna’s Matt Baker and Just for Laughs’ Simon King, the tour hopes to bring another set of comedians to Merritt in September. I’ll definitely be going. It was nice to see a comedy show that brought a variety of perspectives together, with jokes that easily cracked up an audience of people with different opinions, views, and senses of humour. Even better was seeing members of the community relax, laugh, and simply be entertained. Comedy and laughter are really about connecting with each other and coping with things out of our control. Being able to joke about the human experience and laugh with each other brings us closer together.

With my annual summer listening tour underway, I have already heard concerns from many citizens in different parts of our region. One of the largest concerns is about high gas prices. For many citizens who must commute to work, the added prices can be devas-

I have heard from many contract drivers who are not able to charge more despite having significantly increased costs. Purdue Canada pays a $150 million settlement

Purdue Pharma, the U.S. based parent company of Purdue Canada, is currently in bankruptcy proceedings and involved in multiple lawsuits. Photo/Herald File Photo

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM A major opioid manufacturer and pharmaceutical company has agreed to a landmark settlement in Canada. $150 million was paid out by Purdue Canada thanks to a B.C. led initiative to recover healthcare costs related to the ongoing opioid crisis and marketing of opioid-based pain medications. The settlement comes from a proposed class-action lawsuit, brought forward in 2018 by B.C. on behalf of all federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada. The Opioid Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act was enacted in the same year, with the goal of recovering healthcare costs that resulted from the wrongful conduct of opioid manufacturers and distributors. “B.C.’s efforts to negotiate this unique settlement, together with other Canadian governments, paves the way for additional

settlements to be reached in the ongoing litigation against other manufacturers and distributors of opioid products,” said David Eby, B.C.’s attorney general and housing minister. “We know that no amount of money can bring

back those who have died, but we are committed to holding corporations and others accountable for acts of alleged wrongdoing committed in the manufacturing and distribution of opioid products.” On April 14, 2016, B.C. declared a public health emergency due to an alarming amount of overdose deaths

in the province. This declaration is still in effect today, with nearly 10,000 British Columbians losing their lives to overdose. The provincial government alleges that opioid manufacturers and distributors engage in deceptive marketing strategies aimed at increasing sales, leading to higher rates of addiction and overdose across the

country. The settlement, reached early in the litigation process, totals $150 million in monetary benefits, plus additional benefits including access to information, such as documents relevant to the lawsuit. Purdue Canada agreed to the settlement before their wrongdoing had even been proven in court. While still

subject to approval in the court system, this is the largest settlement of a governmental health claim in Canadian history. “We are standing up to multinational pharmaceutical companies, advancing decriminalization, investing in new treatment and recovery services, expanding harmreduction measures

The litigation doesn’t stop here, with Purdue Canada being just one of over 40 manufacturers and distributors named in the class action. B.C. says it has applied to have the class action certified in the Supreme Court, opening up the door for further settlements. A hearing is scheduled for fall 2023.

FESBC awards nearly $250,000 for wildfire mitigation From Page 5 Morrow, RPF, Bruce Morrow Forest Consulting Ltd. Morrow submitted the application for funding to FESBC on behalf of LNIB. “Spacing of trees to reduce crown closure, pruning to remove ladder fuels to reduce the risk of crown fires, and reducing the amount and continuity of ground fuels will all contribute to reducing wildfire risk, and allow wildfire crews to respond faster,” said Morrow.

“We created a situation where, hopefully, a fire in the area will now move along the ground instead of through the crown. This will make it easier to fight and reduce the risk of structure loss from ember spotting onto the nearby houses from a crown fire.” Gord Pratt, FESBC Operations Manager, highlighted the support of this work in addressing the high risk areas identified by Merritt’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan and the BC Wildfire Service. “This is a multi-benefit proposal to the

community, the forest, and the area as a whole,” said Pratt. “This project aligns with FESBC purposes, provides employment, and is exactly what we want to support in terms of rural communities working to implement wildfire risk reduction projects.” Stu Jackson, Chief of the Lower Nicola Indian Band, said projects like this one have multiple benefits to the community. “They provide employment opportunities, improve safety, and help support healthy forests. We look forward to more

partnership opportunities like this which enhance communities overall.” Similar work being done in the area on reserve land and adjacent Crown land is being funded through the Community Resiliency Investment Program and the Cascades Resource District. The project also had the full support of the local Resource District and BC Wildfire Service. FESBC would like to gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Forests.

Merritt adopts mutual aid agreement with Logan Lake one apparatus with a limited amount of firefighters, leaving Merritt with the majority of our resources for protection,” he explained. “If we are in their backyard and an incident happens that requires us back in our own jurisdiction, then we can drop what we are doing and return to our own community.”

In addition, Tomkinson also explained that Merritt’s “indemnity” removes any liability from the city from turning down a request of sending resources to Logan Lake. This scenario works both ways and only applies when respective fire departments are currently attending to an emergency. “It’s been a few years since we’ve

requested mutual aid from Logan Lake,” “I think the last time was when the highway’s maintenance yard had a fire in one of their shops.” Provincial rates are established for the remuneration of the responding party. To read the full report please visit https://www.merritt.ca/agendasminutes/.

Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM On Tuesday, June 28, The City of Merritt held its regular council meeting wherein they entered into a mutual aid agreement with the District of Logan Lake. This agreement allows both parties to assist in each other’s emergency situations, should the need arise. “It had lapsed but we renewed it with new terms, mostly on remuneration for each municipality,” said Fire Chief David Tomkinson, explaining the history of mutual aid between Merritt and Logan Lake. “I think people need to understand the difference between a fire protection agreement where we’re providing a service, whereas this mutual aid agreement is really for the benefit of both communities.” The agreement is a five year contract that begins as soon as it is adopted. Previously, both parties entered in a same agreement back on January 12, 2016. “This allows us to call upon another community to assist us and vice versa so it’s a win-win situation for both communities, especially because we both are smaller in size and population,” Tomkinson explained. “We both have fire departments that respond out of a single station, on a single alarm basis, so we are elated that this is in place.” Tomkinson also clarified that this agreement will not change the Fire and Rescue Department’s main priority which is the City of Merritt. “Typically, we were only sending in

City to investigate installation of crosswalks

Councillor Melvina White put forward her notice of motion to have staff investigate the possibility of more pedestrian crosswalks at the June 28 Regular Meeting of council. Photo/ Herald File Photo

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM City Councillor Melvina White put forward a notice of motion asking staff to investigate the installation of pedestrian crosswalks at Nicola Avenue and Cleasby Street, as well as Nicola Avenue and Blair Street. Her motion was passed unanimously at council’s June 28 Regular Meeting, prompting staff to engage the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as Nicola Avenue is a part of Highway 8. White told the Herald that she heard a number of complaints and

concerns from members of the community about the high volume of traffic and low visibility at the two intersections. The Cleasby Street intersection is home to the Merritt Fire and Rescue Department, while the Blair Street intersection hosts Canco Gas Station and is used for commercial trucks to turn into the Aspen Planers mill site. “I’ve had various people from the public talk to me about those crosswalks over the last year,” said White. “It just seems to

keep getting worse and worse with more traffic happening. The latest one I heard was someone’s daughter almost getting hit by the one on Cleasby. I’ve tried to cross that one myself at various times and people just keep going.” White said these stories and concerns are what prompted her to bring forward the motion. The City has installed numerous solarpowered flashing pedestrian crosswalk fixtures throughout high traffic areas in recent years, with Councillor Adam Etchart pointing out that the budget for the earlier installations had not been fully used up. White and City staff hope to use this budget rather than adding additional costs to the City’s operating budget. City staff also addressed White’s concern of why larger commercial trucks are turning down Blair Street, which is not designated as part of the City’s truck route. Due to the location of Aspen Planers

Quilchena Avenue mill entrance, logging trucks and other industrial traffic must turn left at Blair Street to enter the mill. “The one on Blair Street is an issue with the trucks. The main complaint I’ve had is that the trucks can’t see pedestrians when turning the corner. I question why big trucks are coming down there anyhow if it’s not a truck route.” As White’s motion was unanimously passed, City staff will now engage the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to investigate the feasibility of the two additional pedestrian crossings. The piece of Highway 8 that runs through City limits, called Nicola Avenue, is owned by the provincial government. The City will need provincial approval before moving ahead on this project or any other along Nicola Avenue. White believes this is the main barrier to completing the project. “If it was a City responsibility I believe that

it would be done right now. What I think a lot of people misunderstand is that Nicola Avenue belongs to the provincial government.” After engaging the provincial government and investigating the feasibility of the two additional crosswalks, City staff will return their findings to council at a future meeting.

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

Three local softball teams knocked it out of the park on Canada Day weekend, securing first place wins in their respective divisions during the 2022 Kamloops Coed Softball Provincials. The Merritt Bandits and the Merritt Land Pirates were ‘Comp B’ and ‘Coed Recreational’ champions, respectively. The Merritt Outcasts wouldn’t be counted out either, securing the runner up position in the ‘Coed Recreational’ category. All three teams played 3 days of games at Kamloops’ Tournament Capital Ranch, vying for cash prizes and

a shot at the World Series in Kamloops. The Bandits nabbed a spot in the World Series, as well as a spot in next year’s 2023 Men’s World Series in Hamilton, Ontario. “I could not be more proud of the two young teams from Merritt making a name for themselves, and also my team, the Bandits. Six long years playing in comp and we finally got the win we’ve been waiting for,” said Clay Munro, coach of the Merritt Bandits. “Now we’re on the road to the 2022 World Series in Kamloops on September long weekend. I hope to see more Merritt teams, we always love seeing our ball community spread their wings.”

Softball is a popular sport in the Nicola Valley, with Merrittonians often able to see games and tournaments taking place at Central Park’s baseball diamonds. Munro is the organizer of a tournament called Smashfest, which recently returned after a pandemic caused hiatus. While he organizes locally, in the larger scale tournaments he is a coach and player. The National Softball Association (NSA) organized the provincials in Kamloops, and will plan and execute the World Series events as well. Munro says the organization has been great to work with, and he looks forward to taking his team to compete in future events.

leave Merritt to make names for themselves. I love seeing it.” The Merritt Bandits will now focus on practicing their game, competing in friendlies, and engaging the community for support. Currently sponsored by Murray GM, Emcon, and Procore, the local team is hoping to make it big. After the Kamloops World Series on September long weekend, the focus will shift to fundraising efforts for the 2023 Hamilton World Series. “I’ll be looking for sponsors to help the team reach that goal of going to the big one in Ontario. Until then, we just love seeing fans and their support. The ones in town know who they are and the Bandits appreciate all they do to help us,” added Munro. The Centennials’ new mantra for season 50 Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM

The Merritt Centennials recently shared on Twitter their exhibition schedule, stating that there is only two months left until we get to see them on the ice once again. Although it may be just another regular season for other teams in the league, this upcoming 2022-2023 campaign is special for the Cents because it marks their 50th year, a milestone achievement for any franchise. The Herald sat down with Cents head coach, Curtis Toneff to discuss their past season, relationship with the community, and to learn more about their new mantra, “whatever it takes.” Q: What were your main takeaways from this past season? A: “There were two big devastations in this community, starting with the forest fires and then the floods. I came in around Christmas time and

we only had 17 players left with only so many cards to use on players. We added players that were available in the Jr. A world and just got through the season. Talking for the last few weeks with our president, Kelly, we accepted that our record was what it was but the young men in our locker room were all great people and they really put their heart and soul into playing. They were up against it, in the best conference in Canada but they never really gave up on or off the ice, we had no quitters. There may be a lot of new faces in the room this coming year but I will always respect that group of 23 players that we had to finish off this past season.” Q: Can you explain the idea behind the team’s new mantra, ‘whatever it takes’? A: “That’s a saying that we came up with because this team has been doing that for 49 years, so why not have that slogan come to life for its

50th? There’s been a lot of people behind the scenes that put in a lot of hours into making sure there is a hockey club in Merritt. It’s no secret that this team has been struggling in the last two or three seasons and we’re ready for a fresh approach to next year while keeping in mind the hard work that’s been put into having this team be here. ‘Whatever it takes,’ that slogan has something to do with the future and keeping a hockey club in Merritt. I think with a successful season, on and off the ice, we could make sure that the Merritt Centennials are here for many years to come.” Q: How could you relate ‘whatever it takes’ to the community of Merritt? A: “They’ve been doing whatever it takes for months and months now, and the aftermath of these natural disasters is still being dealt with. If the Merritt Centennials can do

anything for this community, with COVID-19 restrictions subsiding, we want to make sure we are out in the community, doing whatever it takes to help people in need, to get back on track or just to provide a fun day or to for them through events and through appearances.”

Sights from the 2022 Bass Coast music festival Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM Music was thumping and the night was lit up once again this past weekend as the 2022 Bass Coast Music Festival was celebrated in Merritt. “This weekend was incredibly successful and very very special so we are beyond happy to be here,” said Bass Coast Co-Founder, Andrea Graham. ‘Everybody that came just seemed so appreciative to be together again, to be here in Merritt, on this land again, and

also to be able to experience art and music and community because we’ve all been missing those.” 6500 festival patrons witnessed 130 musical acts, 57 incredibly designed art installations, and seven live artists create art from murals to hand crafts. For the past two years, the annual electronic music festival has been shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions. This was the festival’s 14th edition overall and its eighth appearance

in Merritt. Graham said the organization always looks to improve from year to year. “From a producer’s standpoint, we are constantly thinking about how we can improve things for next year,” she explained.

“The music was just incredible all weekend, the art installations were stunning. The goal for next year is to still grow in those areas while maintaining a capped and boutique experience.”
