Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has carried out a plan to feed and/or rescue animals that were left in the Lytton area in the wake of the emergency evacuation. The fire, which raced through the Village of Lytton in less than an hour, left many Lyttonites rushing to their vehicles to escape with no time to collect pets or move livestock. As such, requests have been continuous for an opportunity for residents to return to the area to check on their animals and rescue them if possible. The TNRD has responded by organizing a team to perform this task, as it is still considered too dangerous for residents of the community and neighbouring reserve lands to return home. “Given the conditions in this area, See ‘BELOVED’ Page 5

Province, feds matching donations for wildfire relief Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

As BC faces an extreme fire season, battling nearly 1,000 fires already this year with no reprieve in sight, many people across the province have been affected by the devastation caused by out-of-control wildfires. In order to help those affected British Columbians, the Canadian Red Cross launched a ‘British Columbia Fires Appeal’ on July 3. The Province has now announced that it will match all donations to this appeal since July 3, up to $20 million. “The Province continues to support evacuees through Emergency Support Services,” said BC Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth. “By matching Red Cross contributions, donations will go even further to aid community recovery and the Red Cross’ critical work on the ground.” The federal government has also announced its intentions to match donations, meaning every $1.00 donated to Canadian Red Cross for BC wildfire relief will become $3.00. “The Government of Canada is, and will continue to be, a strong and active partner to assist people and communities affected by the wildfires in British Columbia,” said Bill Blair, federal Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “We are committed to providing a co-ordinated federal response that is also complimentary to existing programs to the residents of Lytton and surrounding communities. We are pleased to join together with British Columbia for this donation-matching campaign encouraging Canadians to contribute with charitable donations to the Canadian Red Cross.” Red Cross will work with the province, local authorities and First Nations leadership in order to provide urgently needed assistance to indiSee ‘RED’ Page 10 viduals and communities impacted by wildfires, including

GOVERNMENT

ALBAS: Changes at the border

Starting on July 5th, restrictions were slightly eased when crossing the border into Canada. Unfortunately this has led to some misunDAN ALBAS derstanding in VIEW FROM certain circumTHE HILL stances. For example, while some restrictions have been eased, the requirement for U.S. and other citizens coming to Canada for only essential reasons has not been relaxed or otherwise changed. U.S. and other non-Canadian citizens coming to Canada for non-essential reasons will still be turned away at the border. This means that any potential tourists coming to vacation in Canada continues to be prohibited. So what has changed? The most significant change is that for Canadian citizens eligible for entry, there is now a process to potentially not be subject to mandatory 14 day quarantine, including the mandatory hotel stopover for air travel where applicable. The conditions to bypass the quarantine include proof of your vaccination, you must also provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test that has been taken within 72 hours of your entry into Canada. Proof of vaccination can be provided online via the ArriveCANweb portal or through the ArriveCAN app that can be found on both the Google Play Store and the App Store for iPhone. For travellers who are not fully vaccinated, there are no changes to the existing restrictions and quarantine requirements. Now that there is a Government of Canada app to provide proof of vaccination, how do you feel about that? I can be reached at Dan.Albas@parl. gc.ca or call toll free 1-800-665-8711.

Stopping the spread An act of kindness of invasive plants Editor, A very special thing happened to us on our way home. It was super hot and the air conditioner wasn’t working in the motor home. I put a wet towel on our dog to keep him cool. We decided to stop at Merritt and see if we could get it fixed. We got a name and phone number of a radiator shop. I phoned and explained our situation. He said come right over and we’ll fit you in. As we talked we told him we were evacuated from Deka Lake. He phoned all over for a kit but was unable to find one. They decided to replace the whole unit. We were worried about

the cost as they had three and four fellows working on it for over two hours so we could get on our way. After all was finished and the cold air came pouring out (to our immense pleasure). We went to pay him. He just said you’re on your way, no charge. We were both in tears and couldn’t thank him enough. This Good Samaritan was Nicola Valley Radiators, Yves and Koren Lefebvre . We can’t express how grateful we are.Thank you so much. Such an amazing act of kindness.

A helping Canning hand when jars wanted needed Editor, Last week my wife and I were staying at Claybanks Rv Campground. Needing supplies, we walked to the Pharmasave Drug Store, only to discover we had foolishly left our face masks behind. In the heat of the day we were dreading the walk back. Taking a chance we approached a young lady and asked if she would enter the store and purchase masks for us. She promptly and courteously obliged our request saving us a 40 minute walking round trip. Thank you, Belinda. Jim and Susan Elder

for the displaced Editor,

Mary Agnus is calling out for donations of canning jars to help displaced evacuees. She, along with possible volunteers at her home, will be canning “any fruit or vegetable possible.” If you have canning jars to donate, please call Mary at 250-6822907. Mary Agnus

Catherine Tarasoff is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Thompson Nicola Invasive Plant Management Committee (on Facebook @TNIPMC). Warmer weather and longer days likely means that you are heading outdoors to hike, bike, fish, and explore the back country. Did you know recreational activities can be inadvertent vectors of invasive plant spread? If you are planning on hopping in your boat, on your bike, horse, motorized vehicle, or are merely going for a hike, please follow these simple actions to prevent invasive plant spread in our beautiful outdoor areas: COME CLEAN by removing plants and mud from your footwear, gear and pets before exploring. It is important to prevent the spread of invasive species from your property to natural areas. This is particularly true if you have a garden at home or invasive plant infested pasture; seeds may be lodged in your boots or your pet’s fur. To remove plant burrs from pet fur, apply a little bit of coconut oil to the burr, pinch the burr until it breaks up, and then comb it out. STAY on designated trails to reduce the chance of picking up seeds and mud that carry invasive plants. Staying on trails also helps keep our native plant communities and ecosystems healthy and strong, enabling them to resist invasive plants. When you go off trail, the resulting ground disturbance provides prime habitat for invasive plants, who are likely to establish, and out-compete our native plants. DON’T PICK wildflowers. Picking wildflowers can result in two outcomes: 1. the spread of invasive species, and/or 2. the weakening native plant communities’ seed source. The best adventures are ones that leave only footprints. If you spot an eye-catching plant, take a photo. BRING IN CLEAN RESOURCES such as weed free hay for your horses and locally sourced firewood for your camp. All firewood should be sourced from no further than 20 km to prevent the spread of invasive insects, such as emerald ash borer. This forest pest can naturally disperse about 10 km per year; but, with the help of humans it can travel 90 km per hour! LEAVE CLEAN- remove plant and muds from your footwear, gear and pets after exploring. If you are on the water, practice Clean-Drain-Dry (https://stopaquatichitchhikers.org) to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Be sure to dispose of unwanted bait in the garbage.

WORK DONE AT NICOLA LAKE OVER WEEKEND There was a good turnout of members of the Nicola Valley Rod and Gun Club on Sunday at Nicola Lake, and a good job was made of putting in cattle guards on the Nicola Lake Road to Armstrong’s Beach. A Cat loaned by the Nicola Lake Stock Farms and driven by H. Saunders helped considerably. Two gates were eliminated on the road through the Nicola Lake Stock Farms property and cattle guards were built.

Long-term care visits returning to BC Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

T

hose with loved ones in longterm care (LTC) and seniors’ assisted living facilities will soon see a further easing of visitation rules and restrictions. The changes, which will come into effect on July 19, 2021, include: Visitors will no longer need to schedule or book in advance to visit loved ones, and the limit on the number of visitors for each resident will be removed. Fully immunized visitors can visit with residents without wearing a mask. Larger, facility-wide social events or gatherings are safe to begin again. Indoor gatherings may include residents and staff across units of a facility, while outdoor gatherings may include family and friends. Adult day programs and in-facility respite can fully resume, providing additional health and well-being benefits for seniors and caregivers in community. “The pandemic has challenged

people living and working in long-term care in ways we never could have imagined, but we are now finally in a place where people can safely spend more time together again,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. Visitors to long-term care and assisted living facilities will continue to be screened and practices such as use of medical masks, hand sanitizing and physical distancing will still be in place. “After an incredibly challenging 18 months, it is uplifting to see people in long-term care and assisted living get back to doing more of the things they love, like gathering with friends, family, and community members,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors Services and Long-Term Care. “As we put COVID-19 behind us, we will continue to ensure our seniors living in long-term care and assisted living are safe, supported and cared for.” Seniors were recognized early on as particularly vulnerable to the COVID19 virus and related illnesses, and as such visitation was heavily restricted in order to protect them. “While vital for reducing the spread of COVID-19, we recognize

the restrictions on visitors have been incredibly challenging for people in long-term care and their families,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer. “Because nearly 80% of people in B.C. have stepped up to be vaccinated, we are now in a place where visitation in long-term care can resume in a more normal way. This means residents and their families and friends will be

able to spend more quality time together – safely.” Those living and working in LTC and assisted living were among the first to receive both the first and second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in BC’s vaccination rollout, and all residents and workers have now been offered both doses of the vaccine.

Red Cross work critical Merritt cop riding for kids during wildfire season From Page 5 the people of Lytton who saw their town razed by an aggressive, quick moving fire on June 30. “We know people in B.C. and across the country are concerned for those affected by the many current wildfires in our province and the threat of more, and want to find a way to help communities recover,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “Donating to the Red Cross is a great way to help. Our government is doing everything we can to support firefighters and emergency responders and keep people and communities as safe as possible. The Red Cross provides critical help in emergency situations like this, and it’s important that we support that work.” In order for a donation to be matched by the Provincial and Federal governments, it must be made directly to the British Columbia Fires Appeal fund. This can be done in person at BC Liquor Stores and BC Cannabis Stores, as well as online at: https:// donate.redcross.ca/page/85877/donate By calling 1-800-418-1111 toll free, texting FIRES to 45678 or by contacting a local Canadian Red Cross office. “This is an incredibly challenging time for individuals and families facing tremendous loss in the Lytton area, as well as communities across the province that are facing the possibility of devastating wildfire impacts this summer,” said Pat Quealey, vicepresident, B.C. and Yukon, Canadian Red Cross. “The B.C. government’s announcement to match donations is very welcome news. We are grateful for this partnership, as well as the generosity of British Columbians and all Canadians whose donations will allow Red Cross to bring relief to people in B.C. who need urgent help and long-term support in their recovery.” The provincial government will continue to match donations until Dec. 31, 2021.

Grads get special gifts

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

Barbara Basil, a member of the Lower Nicola Indian Band and an employee of the LNIB school, has been adding a personal touch to the graduation gifts presented to the grade seven students by sewing blanket bags for each of them. After completing the seventh grade, LNIB students must leave the school and begin attending Merritt Secondary School. To commemorate this important moment in their education, LNIB holds a graduation ceremony for the students, during which they are presented with a blanket. “We used to just put them in gift bags, store bought ones, but because of COVID last year we went looking and we couldn’t find any that said graduation,” said Basil. “So, I decided to sew the bags for them.” Last year, Basil made twelve bags. This year there were 17 students who received a fabric bag sewn just for them. “They (the students) just love them,” Basil said.

“I believe the sewn bags give the blanket gifts a more personal touch.” Sewing is a hobby for Basil, something she has been doing for many years. She enjoys sewing the blanket bags and hopes that the students will cherish their gift all their lives. When selecting the fabric, Basil tries to choose patterns that reflect the indigenous heritage and influence of the school, which is located on LNIB reserve lands and has many indigenous students. Gifting someone a blanket is a way of honouring someone and showing them respect. Usually, the blankets are wrapped around the students’ shoulders, but due to COVID they are left sealed in their original packaging. “It’s an honour, when we’re honouring somebody, we give them a blanket,” Basil explained.

Upgrades coming to rodeo grounds

www.merrittherald.com

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS The Nicola Valley Rodeo Association will soon see extensive electrical upgrades at the Rodeo and Exhibition Grounds as an application for a government grant has now been approved. The NVRA is now moving forward with the planned project on the 22-acre property it owns jointly with the Nicola Valley Fall Fair Association. “The grant has come through the Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP) which was initiated by the federal government last summer when the impact of COVID-19 on local economies became apparent,” reads a statement from NVRA. “(It) is being administered by the Provincial Government under the Community Economic Resilience stream.”

The grant will provide up to $440,000 to complete the electrical upgrade, which will provide a higher level of service, safety, and efficiency. Planned upgrades include new lighting and updating the sound system, as well as RV park and camping site improvements and related works. Also a priority is the installation of further security cameras and security systems to combat and reduce the recurring breakins, vandalism and theft that have dramatically increased in recent years. “The goal is to make the rodeo grounds a first-class rodeo facility capable of hosting major events and, as well, to expand and encourage the use of the property for other community events.”

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@ MERRITTHERALD. COM A new show has kicked off at the Nicola Valley Arts Gallery. Body Art: Living Art of Tattoo & Body Adornment runs until Aug. 1, and showcases the many ways that people use their bodies as a canvas for art with tattoos, hair and makeup, body painting, henna and more. Body art is perhaps the most personal form of expression, and may range in meaning from quick and fun, to complex and deeply meaningful. “It’s a ritual and it shows the development and journey through a person’s life,” said Arts

Gallery Director Jano Howarth. “It shows up in cultures all over the world, for all different reasons.” Howarth credits Arts Council President, Mischelle Pierce, with coming up with the idea, which will provide a lead-in for the Art of Clothing exhibit later this year. In the spirit of pursuing art, Howarth even took the plunge and got her first tattoos in the lead up to the Body Art show, working with Sin on Skin Tattoos artist Brian Wheeler. “I’m now tatted up, for art,” Howarth joked, noting that more and more people are choosing to ‘art up’ their bodies. “I think it’s really opened up. I think

in some cultures it’s been going on forever, and I think in North America people really held back

from that because it had certain symbolism that made people uncomfortable, or they didn’t

Donations needed for kids charity

Puterbough will be making the trek. Puterbough feels that this is a way to give back, something he began to consider after facing health issues with one of his youngest children, who was born premature. “That kind of got me interested and thinking about, what are some of the things that other families have gone through?” said Puterbough. “Because we were quite fortunate ourselves to have lots of support through that, but other families are not quite as fortunate. So, it got me thinking about what other people have to go through, and Cops for Kids is a great charity that helps kids and families that are having to go to BC Children’s to get treatment for, say, cancer or something, or they need specialized equipment that they can’t afford,” continued Puterbough. “It can be a real financial burden on families if one parent has to give up a job to be with the child full time for maybe weeks or months on end in Vancouver. So, that’s why I got interested in the ride, and now since being involved in it, it’s just such a great charity. Really positive people, completely volunteer driven.” For those who wish to support Cops for Kids, donations can be made directly to the foundation via the Cops for Kids website, or supporters are welcome to find Cst. Puterbough’s name on the webpage under ‘The Riders’ and make a donation to his fundraising page, which fosters good natured competition between riders to see who can raise the most funds for the charity. “Financially is the best way to help,” said Puterbough. “There’s more and more families that need it, especially after this past year.”

to donate items to us and we have a yard sale with these donated items. We usually raise about $1,000, and on Saturday we raised $1,300.” 100% of the money brought in from this yard sale, which was held under a recordbreaking heat wave, was then given to Cops for Kids. “It’s all money we can put right directly towards the kids because everything was donated, so we had no expenses,” said Puterbough. “It all goes right to Cops for Kids.” In addition to individual fundraising for the organization, Cops for Kids hosts an annual bike ride during which RCMP members endure a gruelling, 1,000 km ride which follows an extensive loop through southeastern BC. “The ride is their signature, fundraising event,” said Puterbough. “They start in Kelowna on Sept. 10 this year, and we cycle down to Osoyoos, over to Grand Forks, Nelson, Cranbrook, up to Golden and then kind of do a big loop through Kamloops back to Kelowna.” The route takes ten days to cover, with plenty of community interaction along the way. to our donors for making it possible to bring back our printed edition of the “We stop in all the communities we pass through and visit kids newspaper. We would not have been able to do it without you. and families that we’ve helped and raise money,” said Puterbough. “It’s a fun event and it gets a lot of positive media attention and raises lots of money.” In years past, other officers from Merritt, such as Cpl. Derrick Francis, have taken part in the event, but for 2021 only Cst.

Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD. COM A firefighter based out of Merritt has landed in hospital after battling the Sparks Lake wildfire near Kamloops. According to a GoFundMe page, Dylan Bullock suffered burns to his chest, neck, arm, and face during a fire accident on July 7. The page adds that Bullock has been fighting fires for the

last ten years. With over $33,000 raised as of July 14, it is now asked that those that would like to donate to the cause donate directly to the people of Lytton, where Bullock was stationed for many years, and where many of his previous fire crew coworkers, The Rattlers, lost their homes. As it stands, the family is holding off speaking to media as they wish to maintain their privacy during this time.

New Cents head coach itching to get back in saddle Marty Hastings KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK Dave Chyzowski has hockey in his DNA. The Merritt Centennials are about to find out if coaching is in his genetics. “I’ve talked to all the kids who were on the team [last season],” said Chyzowski, who was hired last month as head coach and GM of the junior A club. “It wasn’t fun going to the rink. I’ve been on teams like that. “My biggest goal is to get them to love playing hockey again.” Chyzowski, who turned 50 on Sunday, was the second overall pick in the 1989 NHL Draft, thanks in large part to a 104-point season with the Kamloops Blazers in 1988-1989. He helped Canada to gold at the 1990 World Junior Hockey Championship and enjoyed an 18-year pro career that included 128 NHL games and stints in

Europe. In 2006, Chyzowski’s hockey career changed form when he joined the Blazers’ marketing team. “As a hockey player, you miss a lot of stuff with your kids growing up,” Chyzowski said. “I didn’t get to watch my kids play hockey and do the first things — walk and school plays, like normal parents do. “When I got to watch him [oldest son Nick] play for the Blazers for five years, I loved it. It was almost like I got to make up for lost time. When he left, I had this empty feeling coming into the rink every day and not being able to see him. “As goofy as it sounds, it was really hard and I felt like I was missing out on giving kids a chance to learn something based on all my experience playing hockey and having different coaches.” Chyzowski had stops with

Delta Hockey Academy, as head coach of the under-18 girls’ prep team, and with the Vancouver Giants, as an assistant coach with the WHL team.

Dave Chyzowski

Head Coach and GM of Centennials

“Unfortunately, everything came to a shut down when this rancid pandemic came and brought everything to a halt,” Chyzowski said. He kept his wheels rolling by joining Kamloops Ford Lincoln in

a sales position, but the coaching bug itched away and Chyzowski jumped at the opportunity to apply for the opening in Merritt. “I’m a big believer in how you can push different buttons,” Chyzowski said. “Some kids need a pat on the back and some kids need a kick in the ass. “I have a pretty good ability to be able to notice what’s needed at certain times.” The Centennials could use spurring. Merritt won three of 20 games to place last in the B.C. Hockey League in 2020-2021, a pod season that was ravaged by COVID19 complications and saw the Centennials play all of their games in Chilliwack. Chyzowski succeeds head coach/GM Derek Sweet-Coulter, whose contract was not renewed after the pod season. “There will be [roster] changes and not to anybody’s wrongdoings,” said Chyzowski, who is

navigating a learning curve on the management side. “My biggest thing is they were a young hockey club last year. I really want to bring in a mixture of some heavy defencemen that are hard to play against and give the young, smaller forwards the ability and courage to play to their potential — and I want to make sure our rink is the hardest building to play in in the league.” Chyzowski was asked about his coaching goals. “I’m not looking at anything long-term other than trying to help Merritt build back up and be a professional, classy, wellrespected organization again,” Chyzowski said. “I don’t have any aspirations right now of going to coach at different levels. Maybe that will happen one day. I don’t know. But I love the idea of helping kids develop and achieve goals scholastically and from an athletic standpoint. “It’s like watching your own

Wait4itFILMS and thewaitCREATIVEco are joint projects owned and operated by Brent Gill, who excels in creating unique photo and video content for both personal and commercial use. “wait4itFILMS is a Nicola Valleybased production company specializing in web and social media video commercials, photo imagery and stories,” Gill explained. “I operate province-wide and specialize in tourism and adventure, retail and guest experiences, as well as product and services showcasing; helping people and their companies promote their stories and services across the internet and social media platforms.” In today’s fast paced world, where people rely

more and more on the world wide web to connect them with companies, products and experiences, having professional and attractive content is of the utmost importance, whether you’re a small fish or a mighty shark. Gill brings more than two decades of experience to the table and can help create just what you need via small- and largescale video shoots and productions, using aerial drone photography or videography as well as logo and graphic ad design, social media management and content production. “Videography and photography have been my passion for over 25 years,” said Gill, who traces his current success to the creation of his YouTube page,

now active for over a decade. “Being able to combine these passions with the love for outdoors and fly fishing enabled the successful ‘wait4itFILMS YouTube page around twelve years ago. Handling numerous social media accounts and producing content for my customers continuously built further relations within the industry. I now produce content for many companies in the tourism and adventure industry.” Tourism and adventure doesn’t just factor into Gill’s life via his creative companies; his ‘day-job’ is working for Douglas Lake Ranch, taking charge of the tourism portion of their business. “My work with wait4itFILMS and thewaitCREATIVEco is actually my second job, I am also the recreation manager for the Douglas Lake Ranch,” said Gill. “As the recreation manager, I oversee all of the sales and marketing, as well as the operations for The Quilchena

Resort Area, Salmon Lake Resort, Stoney and Minnie Lodges, as well as all of the remote camping and fishing locations.” Douglas Lake Ranch is a sprawling ranch of more than one million acres both deeded and under grazing license which contains ranch outposts throughout the BC Interior. The Ranch has been in operation since 1872, when John Douglas Sr. homesteaded 320 acres along the shores of Douglas Lake, roughly 50km northeast of Merritt. His role as recreation manager is also a passion project for Gill, who has been a lifelong fishing enthusiast and outdoorsman. “I really enjoy fly fishing and camping, and getting out on a boat as much as I can,” said Gill, who has come to the right place, considering Merritt’s tourism slogan was once ‘a Lake a Day for as Long as you Stay!’ “I grew up in the Fraser Valley and have been in the sport fishing and tourism industry since 1999. I guided and

managed sport fishing lodges on the central coast and Haida Gwaii, which eventually brought me back in 2012 to the Interior, where we spent all of our summers as kids growing up.” In his downtime, Gill continues to improve his photography and videography skills. The only thing that seems to remain the same in tech, is that nothing remains the same, with new innovations coming so quickly it can be hard to keep track. “I am always researching new and better equipment and techniques for videography and photography, therefore studying this practice is just as important as creating the content,” said Gill. One of his more recent projects has become his favourite, a 23-minute video uploaded to his YouTube channel five months ago featuring fly fishing in British Columbia’s Cariboo region. “My favourite project to date is viewable on YouTube and is called ‘Still’, a

five-day, four lake excursion with four of the top fly anglers of BC,” said Gill. “It’s been watched 11,000 times already as a full-length feature.” Which isn’t to say that Gill won’t have a new favourite in the years to come, as he continues to create. “I enjoy the challenge of ‘getting the shot,” Gill said. “Many times, it’s waiting for the perfect lighting. Planning out scenes or shoots in advance and

watching them unfold is very gratifying. I love seeing new logos and content that I’ve created for companies thrive. Seeing beautiful areas through the lenses of my cameras is the best part of this job.”
