Sights from the 2022 Community Airport Day Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM Merritt Community Airport Day was back for its second iteration, offering up a family-friendly day of helicopter rides, classic cars, airplanes on display, and food vendors. Hundreds of Merrittonians gathered to celebrate aviation in the Valley, and come together for the first time since the first event in 2019. A celebration of the 100th anniversary of an airplane first landing in Merritt, the first Community Airport Day was the brainchild of Goeff Scholtens and friend Ray Robinson. The two continue to organize and support the event, but with this year’s second annual event having the support of Experience Nicola Valley, a local tourism non-profit.

In addition to the food trucks, helicopter rides, and classic car and airplane show, and booths by local non-profit organizations, there was a small ceremony held to show appreciation to pilots who brought more than 400,000 pounds of supplies to Merritt during the November 2021 flooding event and subsequent evacuation. Members of the West Coast Pilot Club and BC Airlift Emergency Response Operations (BC AERO) attended the event to receive this thanks. MLA Jackie Tegart, MP Dan Albas, and Mayor Linda Brown spoke at the event, all noting the importance of aviation in the community, and showing their appreciation for the pilots and crews who supported Merritt in its time of need.

Marius Auer REPORTER@ MERRITTHERALD. COM The B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) continues to respond to a new wildfire near the Village of Lytton, a community which was almost entirely destroyed by wildfire last summer. BCWS said via Twitter it is responding to the blaze, named the Nohomin Creek wildfire, approximately 1.7 kilometres northwest of Lytton. As of

7:00AM on July 19, it is estimated to be 2058 hectares in size. The previous nights saw cooler temperatures and limited growth of the blaze, while the morning saw flames continue to spread along the western flank, where flames rage on in steep terrain. While multiple crews supported by helicopters and airtankers are battling the fire, BCWS noted that gusty winds in the area are affecting the fire’s behaviour. Crews are battling

not only the fire, but heavy smoke, terrain, and limited accessibility. The fire is currently threatening parts of Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park. At 6pm on July 14, the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) issued an evacuation order for approximately 24 properties due to the Nohomin Creek fire. The properties are located northwest of Lytton, on the west side of the Fraser River.

Another 31 properties north of the evacuation order were placed under evacuation alert by the TNRD at 9:30pm on July 14. The Lytton First Nation has also issued multiple evacuation orders, with five areas listed in the July 14th order, released on the nation’s website. Multiple addresses are on evacuation alert. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Multiple homes and structures have been destroyed.

Fascination with bears This past weekend, I randomly started to look up bears on Youtube. Living in close proximity to nature IZAIAH REYES as I did in Calgary, HERALD and now in EDITOR Merritt, close encounters with wild animals have always fascinated me. The idea that going on a leisurely hike on a mountain trail could lead to a run-in with a 300 kg black bear is both terrifying and intriguing. I wouldn’t want to experience it but I want to know what the likeliness is and what I would need to do should it happen. Speaking of the likeliness, the most recent run in I had with a bear was last month, on Highway 5, southbound, just past Exit 286. I was leaving town when I saw a six-foot black bear that was trying to cross the road. It was trying to cross in front of me as, at that moment, I was the only traffic on its side of the road. The bear started to take a few steps but quickly backed off the road when I passed by. After passing, I checked my rear view mirror and saw it cross the road behind me. The craziest idea was that this bear was coming off of city limits which meant that it could’ve easily been in town if it wanted to. This has led me to believe that the likeliness is high for a bear encounter. It isn’t all bad though as I’ve learned, by nature, bears don’t see humans as food, and it will actually try its best to avoid us, so long as we don’t have any food that it could have access to.

LETTERS to the editor Nicola Valley outreach project

From the Herald archives: July, 1990

PAGEANT CANCELLED

Editor, On behalf of St. Michael’s Anglican Church, I would like to thank all those generous donors who made our Nicola Valley Flood Fund outreach project possible. Donations were received from kind individuals and Anglican parishes right across Canada after the tragedy of the flooding that took place on November 15, 2021. The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, with its headquarters in Toronto, also sent large amounts of funding to assist families and individuals to get back on their feet, replace clothing, personal effects, damaged appliances, and furniture. Money was also made available for drywall and building supplies to repair damaged homes. In total, $139,000 has been disbursed to families and individuals in Merritt and the Nicola Valley, in the form of grants. I would also like to thank Assisting Bishop Jane Alexander for her outstanding leadership with this project. St. Michael’s Anglican Church has been a part of the Nicola Valley since 1908, and we are glad that we could assist in this challenging time. Blessings, The Rev Canon Isabel C. Healy-Morrow, Rector

ALBAS: ‘Exceptions to sanctions’ DAN ALBAS VIEW FROM THE HILL It was early in March when I wrote about Canada’s response to the illegal attack on Ukraine by Russia. As many will know PM Trudeau announced some strong Canadian sanctions against Russia.

At the time I stated that I believed “the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister have been doing an effective job given that one country, such as Canada, can only do so much to impact a country

like Russia that we have limited trade with.” I also committed my support for continued actions “against Russian and standing with the Ukraine as it fights off this Putin provoked military invasion”. As it turns out, I was incorrect when I stated that “Canada, can only do so much to impact a country like Russia that we have limited trade with.” Recently it was revealed that, here in Canada, some critical Russian pipeline infrastructure, (natural gas turbines) were being serviced in Montreal. Under the trade export sanc-

tions announced by PM Trudeau, these turbines would not be permitted to be sent back to Russia. If the pipeline cannot be fully operational, it cannot raise peak revenues that Putin uses to finance his Russian war against Ukraine. This is the very reason why the sanctions were announced. However, the pipeline in question feeds natural gas to Germany and due to Germany’s efforts to decrease its domestic emissions it has increasingly relied upon Russian oil and gas. As a result,

Germany requested that Canada release the turbines so that they will be returned to Russia, and the pipeline can resume full operations and by extension supply Russian gas to Germany. Prime Minister Trudeau approved a one-time permit to return these turbines. While this is satisfying news to Germany, it has been met with outrage by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as many Canadians who strongly support Ukraine and understand full well what this pipeline rev-

enue results in for Russia’s war machine against the Ukrainian people. As President Zelensky stated “If a terrorist state can squeeze out such an exception to sanctions, what exceptions will it want tomorrow or the day after tomorrow? This question is very dangerous,” and further adding “Moreover, it is dangerous not only for Ukraine, but also for all countries of the democratic world.” While President Zelensky has called on PM Trudeau to reverse his decision allowing these turbines to be returned

to Russia, thus far the Liberal government has refused citing the need to protect “German livelihoods”. Currently the Nord Stream One pipeline that supplies natural gas to Germany from Russia is said to be running at 40 per cent of its capacity without these turbines. My question this week: Do you support PM Trudeau’s decision to return these turbines (first to Germany) who will in turn return them to Russia? I can be reached at Dan. Albas@parl.gc.ca or call toll free 1-800-665-8711.

The 1990 Merritt Queen Pageant has been cancelled. Pageant chairman Trish Dunn, stated two reasons for the cancellation: “Following the Miss Interior Pageant rules, six candidates are needed. We fail to meet this requirement, three of the contestants resigned,” was the first reason cited. “ An inability to secure a reliable full-time trainer,” was the other reason given.

Making a comeback for its 28th annual rendition, the Nicola Valley Cruisers Club ‘Show n’ Shine’ will once again see Central Park filled with squeaky clean vehicles of all ages, presented by their proud owners from all over the province. While continuing on with the usual car show traditions, this year’s event will feature some brand-new additions in the electric vehicle space. The ‘Show n’ Shine’ takes place on Sunday, July 24, at Central Park. Attendees will be treated to hot weather, classic cars, a new ‘People’s Choice’ award, and interactive demonstrations that previous shows haven’t had. Organizers expect a good turnout to this year’s event, with pandemic restrictions having limited large gatherings for more than two years. “We’ll probably reach around 120 entries. Because of what’s

happened the past few years, I think people want to get out and enjoy the shows and the cars,” said Susan Roline, founding member of the Nicola Valley Cruisers Club Association. Roline says the Cruisers Club is excited to be bringing back the beloved community event, fostering a space for the appreciation of vehicles from all eras and all over the province, and to interact with fellow Merrittonians. Lining up on the grass at Central Park, a number of vehicles will be on display in hopes of highlighting the hard work and dedication that goes into maintaining vehicles to a high standard. Merritt’s ‘Show n’ Shine’ is known province-wide for its cooling grass surface rather than the hot asphalt of parking lots. The Nicola Valley Cruisers Club is collaborating with the Rotary Club of Merritt for this year’s ‘Show n’ Shine’ to educate the public on newer modes of transportation, specifically electric

powered bicycles and motorcycles. A piece of the park will be designated for attendees to try out an electric powered bike for themselves. “This year, we have the Rotary Club joining in with us to do a display on electric modes of transportation. They’re going to have different electric vehicles there like motorbikes and bicycles. People will have the opportunity to ride one, so we’re sectioning off a good space for them to do that in.” A returning feature of this year’s show is the absence of a registration fee, with the Cruisers Club opting to recuperate their costs through sponsorships and t-shirt sales. Roline says this decision was very popular with those who entered the show, and streamlined the process of entering a high volume of vehicles for the one-day show. “There is no registration fee. We used to charge a fee to come in, but just to simplify the process, we’ve decided not to do that. We

focused on supporting causes within the community, especially after the devastation of last year’s flooding. The 28th annual ‘Show n’ Shine’ is sure to be a great time for all ages, and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun this Sunday, July 24, from 10am-2pm.

TNRL’s ‘Summer Reading Club’ underway

2022 will be the first year that TNRL will once again offer in-library programs since the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were issued. Photo/Herald File Photo

Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) is excited to promote reading to kids this month through the Summer Reading Club 2022. “Basically, the way we do our reading club is a big summer of fun around reading,” said Children’s Lead, Melissa Miller. “We’re encouraging children and families to read together through all these reading programs and take-home summer reading club programs but it is not as

structured as a book club where you have to attend every single week. We’re very flexible that way, we’re just encouraging reading and literacy.” The program challenges readers to complete seven weeks of reading in eight weeks and it is running from July 4 until August 26. The Merritt Library is also participating in the program catering to four different age brackets: 0-5, 6-9, 10-12, and 13-14. “It’s important to keep children in reading,” said Merritt Library Summer Reading Club Program Director, Darian

Krajci. “It’s the main way that you take in information so if you have strong reading skills, then you’re going to excel in other subjects by proxy.” According to Krajci the turnout for the program “has been very successful,” noting that the 6-9 age group is the most active in the program. Summer Reading Club offers readers a reading sheet to keep record of their daily reading. A submission of a completed sheet qualifies the readers entry to a grand prize draw. There is also an available bingo sheet that the different age groups, along with readers aged 15 and up, can pick up for extra fun challenges. To complement the Summer Reading Club, The Merritt Library, as part of TNRL, also offers in-library programs that aim to get the youth engaged with the library. “Most of the activities are not specifically related to reading,” Krajci explained. “The whole point of it is to get kids into the library so they can take out new books and continue their daily reading.” The in-library programs are happening from July 5 to August 13. This drop-in program includes many activities, catering

to different ages, falling into categories such as crafts and games. “We might even do some video games depending on what the interest of the kids are,” Krajci added. “We’re kind of specializing it to who actually attends it.” The following is the schedule for the inlibrary program: 6-9’s: Tuesday 10:30am - 11am 0-5’s: Wednesday 10am - 10:30am 10-12’s: Thursday 10:30am - 11am 13-14’s: Friday 1pm - 1:45pm Krajci also noted that the 13-14 group will be playing Dungeons and Dragons and there will be storytime presented at the library from 10:30am - 11am on Saturdays. The Merritt Library has 50,000 books in their catalog which is regularly updated. Any available books within the TNRL circulation are all accessible at the library as well. Interested readers could drop in on their corresponding scheduled days included below. Please see front desk for assistance. Parents are requested to stay on the premises for the duration of the sessions. For more information on Summer Reading Club, please visit: tnrl.ca/src.

The Merritt Mavericks on team continuity

are the same young men suiting up for the local high school team. Most teams in the club circuit, across Canada and the U.S., feature select players from different high schools. Mavericks Head Coach, Leroy Slanzi even described them as “all star teams.” However, the Mavericks do it differently by incorporating the same high school unit to represent the club team. This approach gives them the distinct advantage of having continuity all year round, increasing their level of chemistry on court. “There were close to 50 boys from MSS in both our club program and high The U17 Mavericks watching skill developschool program,” said Slanzi, who is also ment film at their practice. Upon seeing necting with the younger guys so they the boys on the team, one could easily feel like they are truly part of a ‘club’.” mistake them for the Merritt Secondary The Merritt Mavericks was estabSchool (MSS) Panthers ball club. This however is not a mistake, as, in fact, they lished four years ago out of necessity.

Slanzi explained that in order to become competitive against “bigger schools” the local team had to gain more playing experience outside of the school season. “I started working with these boys while they were in grades seven and eight. Since committing to the extra work back then, they have not skipped a beat.” This season, the Mavericks have three club teams; U14 with grade seven and eight boys, U15 team with grade nine boys, and a U17 team with grade 10 and 11 boys. The U17 ball club is getting ready to compete at a tournament on at Simon Fraser University (SFU), running from July 22 - 24. “Our team’s chemistry has been pretty good since we’ve been playing basketball together for so many years,” said Cruz Slanzi, Mavericks starting point Guard. “Continuity is a big thing for me and I really love playing with these guys.” The point guard is excited for the upcoming tournament and believes his team can make a solid run. “We’re playing some of the best

win 47 loss record on the ice last year. Having made a change to their coaching staff late in the last season, Head Coach and General Manager Curtis Toneff will lead the team into the 2022/23 BCHL season. While their first game isn’t until September 7 against the Chilliwack Chiefs, there is plenty to do in the meantime. “Oddly enough there really is no inbetween season in a sense. You finish one season and start working on the next. I think a lot of people don’t understand that we never really rest, there’s always something we’re working on,” said Kelly Bartch, the newly re-elected president of the Merritt Centennials. Team planning, strategy meetings, practices, and community engagement keep the Cents busy, from coaching staff to volunteers. Their recent Centennials Golf Tournament was a great success, raising additional funds to support the operations of the club after years of pandemic induced downturn. The Cents maintain a marketing office downtown year round, in an effort to engage with the community and handle communications for the team. The Cents executive committee and

board of directors has been set for the year, with Bartch adding that he believes the mix of newcomers and small town hockey vets are on the same page, and bring a fresh perspective to the team. This year’s executive is as follows: Executive: President - Kelly Bartch Vice President - Gary Dixon Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Rabbitt Secretary - Caryl Moffatt Treasurer - Beth Nadeau Directors: Peter Schmid Terry McRae Ivy McRae Mike Sahota Rose Grant “We were very appreciative of and sad to see some of the people serving step aside, and some maybe take a hiatus. We’ve got some new people stepping in and we’re moving forward with it. We’re looking forward to it, everyone’s excited.” With this year’s coaching and hockey operations staff in place and ready to move forward, the Cents staff and players are looking forward to their main camp in August, where they will finalize their

defense I’ve ever seen us play and we’re getting where we need to be,” he said. “We’re physical, we’re not afraid of anybody, we go in there and think no matter what the outcome is, we’re going in there to play as hard as we can.” “I definitely think we have an advantage,” said Nathan Willey, the other half of the Mavericks starting back court. “We never play this level of club teams in high school so, really, we’re at an advantage because we play against these high level teams, as a team.” Like his teammate, Willey looks to make a strong run at their upcoming tournament. “I’m super excited,” he said. “We didn’t have a great tournament two weeks ago so I’m excited to bounce back and get some W’s here.” The team has a very busy schedule ahead of them because after this tournament, they will play in the club provincials, from August 13 - 14. This marks the end of club season and after a few weeks, open gym starts in preparation for the high school season, where the Mavericks will turn into the Panthers, once again.

Cents front office gear up for 50th season

The Merritt Centennials are the longest continuously running BCHL franchise, reaching their 50th season in 2022/23. Marius Auer/ Herald

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM The Merritt Centennials recently held their Annual General Meeting, setting the pace and leadership for a year they hope will be the best in franchise history. The community owned team’s executive, along with a number of community members, gathered at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena on July 11 to discuss finances, the past season, and elect a new executive. Heading into their 50th season, the Cents are looking to recover from a 3

roster and hit the ice for the first time this upcoming season. Coach Toneff and staff hope to lead the team to a big success for their 50th season. “I think it’s going to be an exciting year. The first full season that our head coach, Curtis Toneff, will take the lead. There’s a whole raft of new and exciting players, and we just really want the community to really embrace our 50th season.” While the Merritt Centennials Booster Club had previously supported the club’s volunteer base, fundraising efforts, and event organization, the group stopped operating with a few exceptions in the past two years. This has created a new need for the Cents - more volunteers. Bartch says a variety of volunteer positions with varying levels of time commitment are available, and offer rewarding experiences in the community. “The biggest thing that we have been blessed over the years with is having excellent volunteers. In the last two years the Booster Club has stepped aside officially, but they’re still some that help us out every day. We do need more volunteers. As a community owned team, we rely heavily on volunteers.”

Merritt hosts Softball BC Provincial Championships Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM Central park was packed all weekend as the Merritt Minor Softball Association hosted Softball BC’s Boys Provincial Championships. The tournament ran from July 15-17, hosting the boys U13, U15, and U17 championships. “This is the big championship tournament for B.C.,” said U17 coach Candice Bateson, who is also a board member for Merritt Minor Softball. “It is all of the boys teams across the province.” Bateson said that the governing body Softball BC was instrumental in bringing the big tournament to Merritt. “We talked about it as a coaching group and some coaches were super keen on bringing it to Merritt,” she explained. “When we talked to Softball BC, they were also really wanting to bring the tournament to Merritt because of how rough we’ve had it for the last couple of years.

They thought it would really uplift the community if we could have this tournament here.” The tournament was a huge success with 10 U13, five U15, and four U17 teams competing for their respective championships. The following is the list of the teams who placed in the top three of each division; U13: • Barriers Stamer Logging Bronze • Terrace Team 2 - Silver • 100 Mile N Hour - Gold U15 • 100 Mile N Hour - Bronze • Terrace Team 2 - Silver • Terrace Titans - Gold U17 • Barriere Chiefs - Bronze • Williams Lake Prospects Silver • Terrace Mariners - Gold “We haven’t had this level of fastball in Merritt for a very long time and it was so nice to see so much talent on the fields

Bateson hopes that the exposure softball gets from this kind of event could contribute to the growth of the sport in the city. “Hopefully bringing this amazing event to Merritt will increase the interest and get more kids signed up for softball. It’s a fun inexpensive sport for boys and girls of all ages,” she said. “Our association would like to host more minor ball events in Merritt from coaching clinics, pitching and hitting clinics, tournaments, and when we’ve all rested a bit we might even consider hosting provincials again.”

It was great to see teams cheer each other on and wish each other well all weekend.” Feedback on the tournament have been very positive. Bateson said that Merritt Minor are very grateful for all the sponsors and volunteers that supported the Provincials. “People were very impressed with the facilities and fields, a huge thank you to Jess Sulz and her team working hard to get the park ready,” she said. “We were grateful that the City and Crossroads Community Church made an exception to allow camping on the fields, it was difficult to find accommodations for this many people after the flooding of our local camp grounds and lack of vacancy in hotels.” Bateson also thanked all the sponsors that contributed to the success of this tournament;

Recap of the 2022 Elvis Festival in Merritt Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM Canadian Bluemoon Ventures Ltd. hosted its first Elvis Festival in Merritt this past weekend, at the Nicola Valley Rodeo Association grounds. Festival goers had the pleasure of enjoying a myriad of tributes to the king. “I think it went very well,” said Elaine Martelli, president of Canadain Bluemoon. “I think, for our first year in Merritt, we had a pretty good crowd.” The festival

started Friday evening on July 15, and continued until Sunday, July 17. Martelli was very pleased with the attendance citing over 300 audience members on their Saturday night show. People from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and B.C. all congregated at the rodeo grounds to join in the festivities. “We had a great turnout,” she said. “The main thing I kept hearing was that everybody wants to keep having it in Merritt.”

Elton John. Marty Edwards and The Revival also blessed the stage, performing different country, pop, and rock hits dating back to the 60’s. Martelli was very grateful to all the volunteers and

sponsors that made the event possible. “People from all over stepped up and helped out,” she said. “The Rodeo Association stepped up big time to help out and I was really impressed with that.” The success of this inaugural event in Merritt has garnered great feedback from the public, opening up the possibilities of future events. “I had a lot of people, both from Merritt and other areas, that are offering to do a lot for next year.” said Martelli. “As long as they’ll have us back, we’ll be there.”
