Police believe abduction of missing B.C. children was planned, renew callout for tips on location

pounds, brown hair and blue eyes, with short hair in a buzz cut.

The last confirmed on-camera sighting of the children comes to police through video surveillance from a gas station in Merritt, which appears to be 7-11 on Voght Street, on July 7. Police have also confirmed they were travelling with a large travel trailer, which the group could now be living in following a planned abduction of the children. Mounties have also have learned they are travelling with two additional males – Verity’s father, Robert Bolton, age 74, and Verity’s boyfriend, Abraxas Glazov, age 53.

In a press release, RCMP said investigators have credible information to support the parental abduction of Aurora and Joshuah was pre-planned. Police believe Verity Bolton, Robert Bolton, Abraxas Glazov have moved “off the grid” with the children, and are living in trailers somewhere in a rural area.

“Our entire family is devastated by recent events. We ask everyone if they could continue to be vigilant in looking for Josh and Aurora, who we miss greatly and hope they will be returned home safe very soon. Our family is respectfully asking for privacy at this time.”

Investigators confirmed that the last sighting of a member of the group was Verity Bolton in Kamloops, BC, where she was spotted grocery shopping on July 15. The children and their mother were seen travelling in a blue 2012 Dodge 2500 crew cab pickup truck with the B.C. licence plate number SJ2708. While in Merritt, the truck was shown hauling a large white travel trailer. In Kamloops, the truck was seen to be hauling a shorter horse trailer, also in white.

A full timeline, as provided by Surrey RCMP, is as follows:

June 28 – Children left with Verity Bolton for planned vacation.

Police continue to search for the missing children subject of last week’s Amber Alert and their mother as tips flood in, but no new sightings of the children have been confirmed. Investigators said in an RCMP press release they have credible information to support the parental abduction of the two children was preplanned.

The mother and the two children were reported missing by the children’s father, their primary caregiver, after Verity Bolton (their mother) did not return them to his Lower Mainland residence following a camping trip to the Kelowna area as planned on Monday (July 17). Aurora, 8, and Joshuah, 10, were last seen in-person at Krafty Kitchen and Bar in downtown Kelowna on June 30, and on-camera in Merritt one week later.

Verity Bolton, 45, is described as a white woman standing five feet two inches tall, and weighing 119 pounds. Aurora, 8, is described as a girl standing three feet 11 inches tall, weighing 55 pounds and having brown hair and brown eyes. Police say her front upper tooth is chipped, and she has freckles on her face. Her brother, Joshuah, 10, is described as a boy standing four feet 10 inches tall, weighing 70

“The public is going to play a major role in locating Aurora and Joshuah,” stated Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Sergeant Tammy Lobb. “We need the public to be alive to the information and photos we have shared and to be our eyes and ears and continue to call us with any tips and possible sightings.”

Abraxas Glazov is described by police as a 53-year-old man from the Nelson, B.C. area. Glazov also has connections to the Deadman Valley and Vidette Lake area. He is an outdoorsman who enjoys fishing and he has a history of living “off the grid” for periods of time.

Robert Bolton is a 74-year-old man from the Chilliwack area. Bolton joined the group on June 30, 2023, when Verity Bolton met up with her father at his residence. Bolton has not returned since. The Chilliwack man has health concerns and may present as confused and/or disoriented. Mounties said in their release the circumstances around this are part of the on-going investigation.

“Our family would like to thank the RCMP for their ceaseless efforts as well as the public, who are sharing the AMBER Alert and have been calling in with tips,” said Aurora and Joshuah’s immediate family in an RCMP statement last week.

June 30 – Robert Bolton picked up in Chilliwack, B.C. The truck was towing a fifth wheel trailer.

July 7 – Verity, Aurora and Joshuah attended a gas station in Merritt, B.C. The truck was towing the large travel trailer at this time.

July 15 – Verity was in Kamloops, B.C. grocery shopping. The truck was pulling a horse trailer at the time.

July 18 – Surrey RCMP receive report that Aurora Bolton and Joshuah Bolton were not returned on to their father on July 17 following a scheduled visit with their mother.

July 19 – Surrey RCMP issue Amber Alert.

“We need the public to stay vigilant and call our tip line or email tips with any sightings,” added Lobb. “We know they have been using the same truck and they have been towing three different trailers, and we need the public to keep this in mind. It’s also possible the children could be spotted with either Robert Bolton, Abraxas Glazov, or their mother Verity Bolton.”

The tip line established for this case can be reached via phone at 604-5997676, or email at surreyamberalert@ rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

29th annual Nicola Valley Cruisers ‘Show ‘n’ Shine’ a huge success

Hundreds gathered to take in the rays and the rides at the Nicola Valley Cruisers Car Club’s 29th annual Show ‘n’ Shine.

The annual tradition usually sees hundreds gather to view an assortment of classic and modern vehicles, including cars, trucks, tractors, bikes, boats, and more, and this year was no exception. More than 100 entries were on display at Central Park on Sunday, along with a number of vendors and non-profit organizations.

Organizers previously told the Herald that the lure of the classic rides keeps people coming back.

“It’s the appreciation of all the old

cars, and the chance to get up and see them up close. It puts a lot of cars in one spot so you’re able to see pretty much everything that we miss,” said NV Cruisers President Gerry Kielman.

The event draws in entrants and spectators from all over the province, including this year’s Mayor’s Choice Trophy winner, Dave Soball of Kaleden, B.C. Soball won the Show ‘n’ Shine with his 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 Fiesta.

The show is free for everyone –entrants, spectators, and vendors – eliminating barriers for those looking to participate.

For more information about the Nicola Valley Cruisers Car Club Association and its events, visit www.facebook.com/ NVCruisersCarClub/, or call Kielman at 250-936-8987.

MITRA: compassion and help for our at-risk children

shed became the unspoken language of prayer, perhaps unknowingly, and helped unite the community in their concern for little lives.

Not too long ago, I was teaching a group of students about children at risk. While doing so, I began to think about the magnitude of the problem worldwide, developed western countries included.

In my presentation, I was rightfully beleaguered at the exploitation of children. Do they have hope? If so, from where and from whom would they get help?

The same could be said of the recently-disbanded Lord’s Liberation Army in Uganda, now thankfully under control.

Then, there are children working day in and day out in factories, without the opportunity of schooling.

There are children dying of AIDS because of the sin of their parents.

Teens run away from even well-to-do but loveless homes and indulge in substance abuse at an early age.

God’s kingdom.

In Matthew 18:1-10, Christ initiates discussion to show that God’s Kingdom places a great value on the least: “Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name, welcomes me.”

In Matthew 19:13-15, Jesus confirms the importance of children once again: “The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

LETTERS to the editor

Paying it forward while passing through town

Editor,

We were travelling home on June 15th from Kamloops to Grand Forks and chose Merritt to have dinner and spend the night.

We hadn’t eaten all day and knew there was a Mr. Mikes near the hotel where we were staying.

We had a great waitress named Randi, who was friendly, funny and so helpful.

Both of us ordered drinks and steak dinners. The restaurant was busy but everything ran so smoothly around us. Soon after we asked

them.

We need an army of workers to reach them on the streets, in homes, and schools.

Some might simply be called to open their homes even for one child through adoption.

Others could have an open-

door policy for neighbourhood kids by being a friend to them and lending an open ear.

Being an attentive and effective listener is vital in approaching children.

When feelings and thoughts are poured out and real listening occurs, children feel affirmed.

No matter where we live, we

for our bill and Randi came back to our table with the bill in hand. She proceeded to tell us that our bill was already paid. Another customer had paid our bill. We were surprised and shocked. Who would do such a kind gesture?

Well, we knew we had to keep the chain going and so we picked another couple and paid their bill. We hope it kept going that night. Thanks, Merritt! We will always remember that mystery person.

cannot close our eyes or hearts to the cry of the children.

Nobody – no community – is an island, untouched by what is going on in the world.

Considering that God is a Father to the fatherless, we are all called to be His hands, arms, feet, and mouth to bring the message of His gospel of love to those

AUER: educate before you share, comment, or embrace

This week, I want to share two examples of complete ignorance that have caught my attention lately and I want to challenge whoever needs it to do better than that.

What’s even worse than being misinformed? Being ignorant. It’s one thing to read something that’s just plain wrong and misinforms the reader, it’s a whole different level to not know anything about a topic and spread assumptions without educating oneself.

My husband told me about the first one. He went to Kelowna last week and while being stopped at a red light he noticed that the car next to him had a sign in the window that read: “Smart Cities = Concentration Camps”. You can feel however you want about smart cities (aka 15-minute cities), but comparing them to concentration camps? I had no words when my husband first showed me the picture. Once I tried to put into words how I felt about it, my first thought was that I really

wish whoever wrote this sign would spend a week in a concentration camp and then report back. If they were still alive, that is. I might be a bit more educated about the topic than the average Canadian since I grew up in Germany, but I cannot imagine there are adults in Canada who do not know that concentration camps were the site of one of the largest genocides in history.

The other example I want to share with you is about a story that was published in the Merritt Herald (online) on July 21, about the Burn in the Forest festival happening this weekend. The story contains an image of the 2019 iteration of the festival and was shared on the Herald’s

Facebook page along with a short caption that the festival is returning to Merritt for the second time. The comments that ensued had me shaking my head so hard that I almost got dizzy. They revolved mostly around the “burning” part of the story, due to the current wildfire situation and fire bans. If any of those commenters had actually clicked on the link to read the story, they would know that there is no actual “burning” involved and that two of the principles of Burning Man - which inspired the local festival - are civil responsibility and leave no trace.

Educate yourself before you share, comment, or embrace. Do better.

John Beers is due home in Merritt sometime tonight (Wednesday) after having won the honour to be able to represent Canada in the high jumping events in the world Olympics to be held in Munich, Germany in late August.

An excited John phoned his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Beers here in Merritt, when he heard.

Numbers show no new illicit drug deaths locally last month

or death.”

A total of 184 unregulated drug deaths have been registered in June 2023 across British Columbia.

In a press release, BC Coroners Service said the amount of deaths for the month indicates about 6.1 deaths per day, and almost all the unregulated drug deaths are a result of mixed drug toxicity.

Lisa Lapointe, chief coroner of the BC Coroners Service, said the province continues to lose members because of the toxicity of the unregulated drug market.

According to the press release, fentanyl and fentanyl analogue was present in more than 90 per cent of expedited toxicological testing in June, while nearly three-quarters of tests indicated the presence of a stimulant.

During the four first months of 2023, four people have died from unregulated drugs in Merritt. Data released by the BC Coroners Service indicates that there haven’t been any new deaths in town.

As for across the province, more than 1,200 deaths were attributed to toxic drugs in the first six months of this year, a slightly higher number when compared to the same period in 2022, which registered 1,153 deaths.

Since the public health emergency was first declared in April 2016, the lives of at least 12,509 British Columbians have been lost to unregulated drugs.

Unregulated drug toxicity continues to be the leading cause of death across the province for people aged 10 to 59, accounting more deaths than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural disease all combined.

“Illicit fentanyl continues to drive the crisis, which is causing deaths in large and small municipalities, towns and cities across the province,” she said. “Anyone accessing an illicit substance is at risk of serious harm

“As coroners, we speak every day to families who are grieving the loss of a loved one,” Lapointe said. “Our agency continues to recommend rapid expansion of safer drug supply throughout the province to reduce the significant harms associated with the toxic illicit drug market and prevent future deaths.”

Government strengthening protections of B.C. ecological reserves

Ecological reserves across British Columbia are getting important changes on their regulation.

According to the news release published on July 18, the new Ecological Reserve Regulation will allow compliance and enforcement measures in ecological reserves across the province.

The new regulation ensures BC Parks the ability to impose penalties on any individuals or companies conducting illegal activities, which guarantees that those who disobey the law in these sensitive ecosystems to be prosecuted or fined.

George Heyman, B.C.’s minister of environment and climate change strategy, said it was an important change that ensures that the province’s protected spaces are not threatened.

“This updated regulation will help protect B.C.’s critically important biological diversity and safeguard rare and endangered plants and animals in their natural habitat,” he said.

There are approximately 158 ecological reserves across the province, including Stoyoma Creek Ecological Reserve, Skihist Ecological Reserve, and Soap Lake Ecological Reserve, which are all

located approximately 50 kilometres from Merritt. Another ecological reserve benefitting from the new changes is The Laurie Guichon Memorial Grasslands Interpretive Site, located approximately 11 kilometres east of Merritt.

While ecological reserves are primarily for scientific research and educational purposes, most of them are also open to the public.

According to the release, other changes in the regulation have also been included, such as:

- Adding bans on present-day activities, such as smoking and the use of drones;

- Amending the violation ticket administration and fines regulation to authorize the use of violation tickets to impose financial penalties for non-compliance;

- Clarifying the restrictions on the entry, use and occupancy of ecological reserves, including temporary closure for public safety reasons;

- Transferring permit management responsibility from an administrator to the minister;

- The ability to set time limits, cancel or modify permits;

- Removing outdated and redundant content;

Kia Henriksen loves to dance: LTD’s new artistic director

When Kia Henriksen started dancing at age three, little did she know she would grow up to become an award-winning choreographer and an artistic director.

“I’d rather be dancing than doing pretty much anything else,” she said.

Dance might be defined by many people as a form of art made by body movement sequences in order to express an idea, an emotion or a story. Others might define it as a fun and quick way to release energy or to connect with people.

But for Henriksen, dance means much more than that.

“I feel like I’m at home,” she said.

From starting her professional career as a teacher assistant when she was only 15 years old, and teaching solo her very first class at 16, Henriksen has been quite successful in her dancing career.

Choreographing for as long as she can remember, Henriksen says the special feeling when she sees everything coming together, from costumes, stage lights to music, hasn’t changed after years.

“The whole process makes me feel really lucky to be able to do something that I love,” she said. “I go to work and it doesn’t really feel like work, I guess it makes me feel pretty grateful.”

As for inspirations for her choreographies, Henriksen said she feels inspired by really random things.

“Sometimes it’s that I find a song and

I can just see what I want it to become,” she said. “Other times it’s focusing on a concept, something that’s important to me, and then building the choreography and the music and every single thing around the concept.”

Henriksen said her choreographies are usually built around a concept, a story behind them that she wants to share with the audience.

“Even if it’s not always obvious in the choreography, there’s usually a reason behind the decisions that I’ve made,” she said. “Whether it’s music or costuming or the movement itself, I like everything to be very intentional so that it feels authentic when it comes through on stage.”

Her dance moves lead her to Merritt in August 2022, where she joined The Love To Dance Academy as a dance instructor. Almost a year passed by and Henriksen is now their artistic director.

She hopes to continue to focus on bringing joy to the community through dance.

“(It) would be wonderful to just like, share a love of dance to the community and bring people together,” she said.

Henriksen will be hosting a dance party event on August 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Rotary Park. She said the event will be a celebration towards the community of Merritt.

“I think that the resiliency in this community has been inspiring,” she said. “This community has been through a lot in the past few years, so I want to bring everyone together to celebrate.”

Newly independent BCHL announces officiating team for 23/24

Finding their footing as they gear up for their inaugural season as an independent league, British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) officials have announced their officiating team for the 2023/24 season.

This season’s staff will consist of five officiating managers, 26 referees, and 24 linespeople, who were selected from a group of over 90 officials that submitted an application to work for the league, which split from Hockey Canada on June 1.

The new officiating staff was selected by BCHL Vice President of Hockey Operations Brad Lazarowich, who was an NHL official for 30 years prior to his time with the league.

“We are proud to announce our staff of officials today for the upcoming season,” said Lazarowich

in a release. “We were overwhelmed with the number of applicants, which goes to show the desire for officials to work in our league has never been higher. We look forward to dropping the puck in September with this group of officials and, working alongside our development coaches and mentors, helping them reach their highest potential.”

The new BCHL officials are not permitted to referee elsewhere due to sanctions by Hockey Canada, including local minor hockey, which is also governed by the national organization. BCHL officials have called on this to change to allow for more collaboration between the league and Hockey Canada.

The new officials list, which notably only includes one female official, is in addition to the four officiating development coaches and mentors announced by the league last week.

For more information on officiating in the BCHL, visit www.bchl.ca/bchl-officiating-team.

Calgary to host 2027 Indigenous Games over Tournament Capital

Beating out a bid by the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc/Kamloops, Calgary was awarded the title of host city for the 2027 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) during an announcement at the site of the 2023 Games on Saturday (July 22).

The 2027 Games are expected to attract over 6,000 participants and attendees, with youth aged 13-19 years competing in 16 sports. The athletes represent over 750 Indigenous nations across North America. The Games take place every four years.

Tk’emlúps Kúkpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir and Kamloops Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson travelled to Halifax for the announcement, which was scheduled to take place during the closing ceremonies of this year’s games, but was postponed to the following day due to a thunderstorm that caused flooding in the city.

Both shared their disappointment in the announcement, which was shared by provincial representatives.

“While we are disappointed that Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc was not successful in their bid to host the 2027 NAIG, we would like to very sincerely congratulate the City of Calgary on their success,” said Casimir.

“We, at Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, look forward to cheering on our members and other athletes from BC as they compete in the wonderful city of Calgary. I would also like to extend a huge Kukwstép-kucw (on behalf of all of us, we thank you all) to all those that supported Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc in the development of the bid: City of Kamloops leadership and staff, Premier Eby,

Minister Popham, staff from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, I-SPARC and the many, many local organizations that participated in our community and provided letters of support. A special thank you to the Kamloops Sports Council, Kamloops Airport, Pacific Sport, TRU, Tourism Kamloops and Niki Remesz. We had an awesome team working with us and we should all be proud of the teamwork and what we accomplished.”

Mayor Hamer-Jackson said that while the bid went well, it ultimately wasn’t the city’s time to host the event.

“The bid, site visit and final presentation were excellent,” commented Hamer-Jackson. “We worked together to showcase the incredible cultural opportunities and amenities we offer, but it was not our time to host. We congratulate Calgary on their successful bid and wish them an awesome Games in 2027.”

The bid was supported by Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops, bolstered by additional support from the provincial government and local organizations looking to bring the large-scale event to the Tournament Capital.

Premier David Eby shared his disappointment in the announcement, also congratulating the Albertan bid winner.

“I share with Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops their disappointment at not being chosen to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games,” noted Eby. “I know their heartfelt efforts will be rewarded in future. Congratulations to Calgary on a successful bid. We will be cheering competitors from B.C. at what we hope are a very memorable and successful Games.”

Community Policing Office organizing downtown graffiti clean up

When it comes to graffiti, there can be a fine line between art and vandalism.

Merrittonians are being called to help revitalize the town by cleaning up graffiti.

The annual graffiti clean-up is being organized by the Community Policing Office and will happen on

July 27 and 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Marlene Jones, Community Policing Office coordinator, said even though the youth group that used to do this type of activity is no longer active, they still want to help revitalize the town.

“It’s time, in the nice weather, to get out there and get rid of it (graffiti),” she said. “If we all just stay on top of it, our town can look a lot better.”

Volunteers are encouraged to call ahead of time to let the Community Policing Office know they can help. All the supplies will be provided by the office.

“I’m just hoping that some people will come out (and help). It’s always fun to do these things if we can do it in a group, and get out there and make a good impact.”

March 11, 1969 - July 10, 2023

Our community sadly lost an important member in Kenneth Scott Couture, who passed away suddenly on July 10, 2023. Ken was an outgoing individual and a source of positivity always, connecting with the community he loved through his work and otherwise.

Ken was always ‘living the dream,’ as he would happily share – no matter the situation – with a smile on his face and coffee in hand. His warm demeanor, friendly jokes, and brightly patterned Hawaiian shirts will live on forever in the memories of those who knew and loved him.

As per Ken’s wishes, no formal service or memorial will be held.

One Final Gift

Scatter me not to restless winds, Nor toss my ashes to the sea.

Remember now those years gone by When loving gifts I gave to thee.

Remember now the happy times The family ties we shared. Don’t leave my resting place unmarked As though you never cared.

Deny me not one final gift

For all who come to see A single lasting proof that says I loved... & you loved me.
