NICOLA VALLEY NEWS TRANS MOUNTAIN

Nicola Valley chiefs to oversee pipeline Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Band chiefs from across the Nicola Valley will have an important role to play in a newly-announced Indigenous oversight committee, established to monitor activity along Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline. Announced on July 24, the Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee (IAMC) will include 13 representatives from indigenous communities across B.C. and Alberta, including both Chief Marcel Shackelly of the Nooaitch Band and Chief Harvey McLeod of the Upper Nicola Band. Lower Nicola Band Chief Aaron Sam also played a role in the creation of the committee itself, after co-signing a letter addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Alberta Premier Rachel

Notley, and former premier Christy Clark last year. That letter, dated for June 15, 2016, stated that “engagement of our Nations with respect to [the Trans Mountain Expansion project] has been woefully inadequate and not in line with your respective governments’ constitutional and international obligations.” It was co-signed by 48

chiefs, including Shackelly, McLeod and Chief Percy Joe of the Shackan Indian Band. “As a result of the letter, we had started to sit down with the federal government about six months ago and we started having discussions about having an indigenous oversight committee specific to the Trans Mountain pipeline — not just the proposed

expansion, but the existing pipeline as well,” explained Sam. He added that many communities are concerned about the safety of the original pipeline, which was constructed more than 60 years ago. Should the Trans Mountain expansion project begin construction this fall — as it was slated to before a new provincial NDP government declared

its intent to oppose the project — the IAMC would also monitor the construction process for any detrimental effects to the environment. “I’ll be bringing forward the questions and the concerns of the community and the nation to [IAMC], and there is hope that once we raise those questions and concerns at the table, we’ll be able to get a response that will address and correct or fix the [concerns] we have,” said McLeod, describing his role in the oversight committee. But participation in the monitoring committee also doesn’t mean that a band consents to the pipeline passing through their territory, explained Sam. “We felt that it was really important that this wasn’t a committee where we were endorsing the

Escaped killer arrested at Merritt gas station Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

An escaped killer with a history of schizophrenia was apprehended by Merritt Mounties after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest. Terrance Scott Geisbrecht disappeared from the Colony Farm Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in the Lower Mainland on Friday (July 21), but a public warning from Coquitlam RCMP wasn’t issued until

Monday afternoon (July 24). After a little more than an hour after issuing the public warning, RCMP issued another notice stating that he

was found and in police custody. Merritt RCMP said they received word that Geisbrecht was in town at about 2:30 p.m. and arrested the 54-year-old at a gas station in the Bench area. “He had used his financial card at the Petro-Can gas station here in Merritt, so they advised us and he was located and taken into custody with no incident,” RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore told the Herald on Tuesday. “He’s in custody here

this morning and the sheriff will come and pick him up and bring him back to the forensic ward,” said Dunsmore. The initial statement from RCMP warned that, without his medication, Geisbrecht could become a danger to himself or others and that he may have already left the Lower Mainland. Geisbrecht was found not criminally responsible for killing two men in Fort St. John, B.C., in 2004 due to a mental disorder.

Two unsuccessful robbery attempts has Merritt RCMP lauding members of the public for keeping their eyes peeled. Police received a call from an eyewitness at 5:30 a.m. on Friday (July 21) who saw what

appeared to be two males attempting to steal tires from the KalTire on Nicola Avenue. The witness said the duo had fled on foot. An officer and police dog attended the scene to find a U-Haul on site with tires in it. The U-Haul had a punched ignition and was reported sto-

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Protestors, union move up Who’s the biggest winner in the new NDP government, unions or environmentalists? Both! Professional TOM FLETCHER B.C. protesters are thrilled. VIEWS Joe Foy of the Wilderness Committee allowed that he’s “over the moon” about NDP MLA George Heyman taking over the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as it has been rebranded. Foy assured The Vancouver Sun that during his three terms as B.C. Government Employees’ Union president, Heyman “brought together a coalition of union representatives and environmental representatives and made the argument that it needn’t be jobs versus the environment.” It’s too bad his party’s version of that argument fails. Putting unconstitutional roadblocks in front of a federal pipeline project offers only lost jobs, since replacement oil is abundant. Shutting down Site C, B.C.’s biggest clean energy project in 30 years, would hurt the environment and push thousands of people out of work. These days it’s MoveUP, the BC Hydro office union, that has new clout. Two of its communications people moved up into top positions in Premier John Horgan’s office. Horgan has turned green, and I don’t mean in a Hulk sort of way. He cries now. He drives a Prius. He loves small hydro projects, once derided by the NDP as “pirate power.” Not long ago, lefty economists, the Wilderness Committee and COPE 378, as MoveUp used to be called, ran a bitter campaign against private hydro. Now let 100 power flowers bloom, all in the unionized monopoly

Last week she persuaded him to veto the government’s new laws on the courts. She told him: “Mr President, I lived in a state (under Communist rule) where the prosecutor general had an unbelievably powerful position and could practically do anything. I would not like to go back to such a state.” And President Duda actually listened to her. This came as a complete surprise, because Duda was a member of the ruling Law and Justice Party and is widely seen as a puppet of its leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. On Monday, however, he rejected new laws giving the justice minister the power to fire judges he doesn’t like — including, potentially, the entire Supreme Court — and choose the new

judges who take their places. “As president I don’t feel this law would strengthen a sense of justice,” Duda said in a statement — or rather, an under-statement — on national television. His action has greatly encouraged the hundreds of thousands of people who have been demonstrating in cities all over Poland against the new laws, but there are still many who doubt his sincerity. Poland is sharply divided between the populists, socially conservative, deeply Catholic, and ultra-nationalist, who form the present government, and the opposition whom they label “the system” or “the elite”. This system allegedly includes both the liberals who led Solidarity’s resistance to Communist rule, and the crypto-Communists who supposedly still exist and are now in league with the liberals. The whole thing is a paranoid fantasy, but it has a firm hold on many people’s minds in a national culture that wallows in victimhood and self-pity. The Law and Justice government, elected in late 2015 with an absolute majority in parliament, denounces the opposition parties as corrupt traitors under foreign influence, and they in turn mistrust everything the government says and does — including President Duda’s change of heart. He’s just playing for time, they think. He’ll

get the demonstrators to go home and then he’ll sign some slightly altered version of the laws stripping the judges of their independence. And maybe they are right. Nobody will know for sure until they see the government’s response to his veto. This is not just about Poland. It is about whether the EU will tolerate an undemocratic government in its midst, and the evidence isn’t in yet. As soon as it won office twenty months ago, the Law and Justice Party turned the state-owned broadcaster, previously politically neutral, into the propaganda arm of the ruling party. It also destroyed the independence of the civil service, replacing the professionals with its own party loyalists. But when it turned on the courts it started for face real push-back from the EU. The EU is probably the only reason that the former Communist-ruled states of Eastern Europe almost all became democracies. They desperately wanted to be members of the EU as a safeguard against renewed Russian interference in their affairs — and the EU insists that all its members be democratic.

OPINION LETTER

From the Herald archives: July 27, 1977

to the editor

Chinese take over spells trouble for B.C. seniors Editor: Kamloops Senior Village, one of the facilities recently sold to the Chinese company Anbang despite province-wide protest, are making the cost cutting changes that we were all so afraid of. Government reports showed that this facility was not meeting the standard of 3.36 care hours per resident per day, even before the Anbang buyout. And now, under the new ownership, they are cutting their care hours by 75 hours per week. This is being done despite the fact that currently, residents are not being given a bath at least once a week due to a lack of staff. According to the Health Ministry’s new action plan for seniors, an agreement was to be incorporated between the Ministry and the Health Authorities to ensure that all facilities would comply with an increase in staffing levels when necessary to meet standards. This agreement was to be implemented by April, 2017. Did the ministry fail to meet the timeline, or has IHA failed to honour this agreement? Now that Anbang is making the move to cut care hours, there can be little doubt that they will use their right to protest any new regulation that “undermines their investment” by appealing to the Foreign Investment Protection Agency (FIPA). And considering how popular Chinese investment in Canada has become, how do you think FIPA will rule? Will they protect our seniors, or foreign investment? This uncertainty that puts our seniors at risk is the very reason why so many B.C. residents protested this takeover.

On July 1, 2017, Canada will celebrated its sesquicentennial — or 150th — annivesary. Onehundred-and-fifty years worth of history is a lot to remember — so each week in 2017, the Herald will run this special section to remind you of the remarkable accomplishments, important historical figures, and maybe even a few fun facts you might not have known about our country. This week in Canadian history: July 27, 1996:

European cohesion at risk From Page 6 Not only that, but it carefully defines how democratic states should behave, and a basic principle is the separation of powers: the courts must not be under government control. When the Law and Justice Party introduced laws started taking away the judges’ independence, it ran head-on into the EU’s rules for membership. Senior EU officials were openly talking about stripping Poland of its voting rights

in the Council of Ministers (the closest thing to an EU government) until Duda said he would veto the new laws. If it turns out that he is only playing for time and will soon sign quite similar laws, the confrontation will resume — and the EU might even resort to financial measures against Poland. Poland is by far the biggest beneficiary of transfers from the EU budget to poorer member countries: in the budgetary period 20142020, it is scheduled to

get $96 billion. Some or all of that money might stop coming if Poland were no longer a member in good standing. The Polish government cannot plausibly threaten to quit the European Union: 75 per cent of Poles see EU membership as a vital counter-balance to the looming presence of Russia to their east. The EU holds all the best cards in this game, if it chooses to play them. But will it? That is not clear. The EU is not famous for its willingness to

take bold action, and it would have to overcome the opposition of Hungary, another ex-Communist EU member that also has an authoritarian government (though a less extreme one). But the EU’s own cohesion would suffer if it did not defend its fundamental values, so if Duda is only fooling there may be a real showdown in a month or two. We wanted, and I believe the federal government representatives as well, wanted as many indigenous participants as possible so this would be a meaningful committee,” said Sam. “As a result, we have indigenous representatives and participants all along the line, where some are supporting it and some are not — but they are still part of the committee.” Both McLeod and Sam noted that months of deliberations went into drafting the terms of reference which outline the responsibilities and powers of the oversight committee. Though the body lacks a formal mechanism by which to halt construction of the pipeline, McLeod explained that concerns from indigenous communities are much more likely to get

addressed through the new body. “We got the ear of the National Energy Board, and we’ve got the ear of the proponent, Kinder Morgan, to ensure the concerns that we’re brining forward are checked up on and addressed,” said McLeod. “There was a lot of discussion on trust, built into the document. Meaning, I have to have trust in the government and the

trust has to be reciprocated to myself.” The indigenous representatives on the committee will be joined by six people from a number of federal agencies, including Natural Resources Canada and the National Energy Board, for a total of 19 members on the IAMC. But while the committee represents a number of federal bodies, as well as indigenous membership from

across two provinces, not all bands affected by the existing Trans Mountain pipeline or the expansion project have endorsed the IAMC. “We’ve been invited to the monitoring committee meetings,” said Coldwater Band Chief Lee Spahan. “But we have very distinct issues with the pipeline, and issues that we want Kinder Morgan and the Crown to come to the

table and listen. “We don’t want to move forward on nothing until our issues have been resolved.” Spahan, like Sam, also delivered a letter to the Justin Trudeau last year, asking the prime minister to step in and force the National Energy Board to consider an alternate route through the Nicola Valley. Until his concerns over the band’s aquifer being endangered by the Trans Mountain expansion project had been addressed, Spahan vowed that his band would not participate in the oversight committee meetings. “The very most important issue of our water is at stake — and we want to save that for future generations,” said Spahan. “I keep telling them, water is life and we have to respect that.”

ROCKIN’ RIVER

Street party coming to Quilchena Avenue Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Some of the biggest stars in country music are set to roll into town on the August long weekend to play the Rockin’ River Music Festival, and the Merritt Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure the party is started by the time they get here. To that end, the local business group is reviving one of the more popular promotions from years’ past — a street party set up on Quilchena Avenue. “There’s gonna be a mixture of different vendors, organizations, some activities. A lot of it is local this year,” said Etelka Gillespie, manager for the chamber. Quilchena Avenue will be closed from Garcia Street to Voght Street, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both Aug. 4 and 5. The street party replaces a similar event hosted by the Chamber at Spirit Square for the past two years during the Rockin’ River Festival. Gillespie explained that having more manpower this year allowed the Chamber to upgrade the scope of the street party. “We’re gonna keep things alive during the day for locals and Rockin’ River go-ers,” said Gillespie.

String of thefts in Merritt From Page 5 On July 25, another call to Merritt RCMP foiled a possible theft. Dunsmore said police received a call from someone at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, advising of a suspicious-looking male on Thorpe Road who was carrying a sheet of plywood. When police arrived they found a stack of pressed wood sheets outside the Jehovah’s Witness church, which is located on Thorpe Road. Dunsmore said the boards are believed to have come from a nearby construction site behind Bann Street. “They were probably stacking them up for somebody to come along and load at a later time,” said

Man stabs friend at party Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

A 27-year-old Merritt man has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing someone at a house party. Skyler Washington appeared in court this week in Kamloops and will be back in court in Merritt on Aug. 1. RCMP officers were called to a house party in Lower Nicola at about 2 p.m. on Saturday (July 22) where an alcohol-

fuelled altercation lead to a stabbing, RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore told the Herald. The RCMP was called and the two men, who Dunsmore described as friends, left the house and went to a residence nearby. When police arrived, partygoers informed the officers where they had gone. “They located the male [victim] at a different residence where he had obvious injuries and was in and out of con-

sciousness with a stab wound to his lower left abdomen,” said Dunsmore. She said the 29-year-old male as taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Washington was arrested without incident, she said. Dunsmore could not confirm if police found a weapon at the scene, but witnesses provided statements that indicated the victim was stabbed. Washington has since been released from police custody.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS

No strike planned at copper mine Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

There will be no strike notice issued by the union representing about 1,000 workers at Highland Valley Copper mine — at least not yet. In a bargaining update, United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7619 president Kyle Wolff stated the union and Teck Resources have agreed to return to the bargaining table today

“with the goal of negotiating a fair and reasonable collective agreement.” Wolff writes that the union did not receive any response from the company following their strike vote last week, which saw nearly 900 members vote overwhelmingly in favour of strike action. He said the union then sent a request to mediator Vince Ready, which led to a date being set. The union held the

vote last Sunday (July 16), which saw 99.8 per cent of those casting a ballot vote in favour of striking. Wolff has told the Herald the union has no immediate plans to strike, and wanted to use the vote to show the company the bargaining committee has the backing of the membership. Workers at Highland Valley Copper mine have been without a new contract since September 2016.

MERRITT

Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

The City of Merritt intends to put out a request for proposal (RFP) to build columbaria units at the Pine Ridge Cemetery after a motion from Mayor Neil Menard passed unanimously at Tuesday’s regular meeting. Menard’s motion seeks to construct the units within the current budget year, which director of engineering Sasha Bird said could probably still be done. “Depending on how the RFPs came in,” Bird told council. “Then once we brought it back to council you could make that determination of whether you want to do it this year or wait until next year.” Columbaria units are structures built to house of cinerary urns (containing human ashes). To complete the project this year, funds will need to be taken out of the city’s surplus, and council will still have to pass a budget amendment, director of finance Shiela Thiessen said at the meeting. Coun. Linda Brown questioned why the

project needed to be completed so soon. “What’s the emergency? If we’ve got it coming in in next year’s budget, what’s the emergency to push it up to this year,” said Brown. Menard said he didn’t view the project as an urgent need, but noted that he’s heard from members of the public that view it as a good idea and have said there is a need for it. Brown also asked which other projects won’t get done if this project is added. “Nothing,” said Menard. Staff will review the RFPs and make a recommendation to council.

“You go for a request for proposal when you’re not exactly sure what you want,” Thiessen told council. “[RFP’s] would come with different options. There’s a variety of different options for columbariums.” Thiessen added the project would likely cost well over $50,000. The structures are identified in the municipality’s recently adopted cemetery master plan as part of a concept for a cremation garden and new veterans section. The plan recommends providing a full range of cremation internment options at various price points in response to its growing popularity.

EMERGENCY RELIEF APPRECIATION A special thank you to everyone who helps in our times of needs Merritt and our surrounding communities have been hit hard this year by floods and fires. It has affected many families, homes and businesses. Despite the hardship of these past few months, we’ve also witnessed first hand as a community came together to offer time, help and services following these devastating events. To all the emergency personnel, such as the fire fighters, police, ambulance services and forestry workers, to the equipment operators, first aid, pilots, city workers, sand baggers, food makers, hotels, organizers, communicators, out of town (and sometimes, out of province) help, businesses, people that have opened up their homes and so many more, we dedicate this supplement to you! Thank you for all that you have done for this community and others in this time of need. Your dedication is truly appreciated by all! We thank all of our advertisers for making this possible, as with their personal thank you ad in this supplement, the Merritt Herald on behalf of these businesses will be donating $20.00 per ad to the Red Cross Relief Fund. Many of our advertisers have gone above and beyond to donate more from their businesses as well. So to all the heroes that have volunteered and helped out in any way they can....We salute you!

Merritt’s firefighters called Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

Merritt fire engine number two is back in quarters following a two week stint aiding wildfire suppression efforts around the province. At the request of the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Merritt Fire Rescue (MFR) deployed the fire truck and a crew of four firefighters to the Blackpool and Clearwater area on July 15 to help protect structures from wildfires. After about five days a new crew of four was swapped in to relieve

the firefighters sent to Clearwater. That crew then took the truck to help out in Williams Lake, where wildfires have burned thousands of hectares of surrounding land and forced an evacuation order for the entire town of 10,000. “They were released from [Clearwater] and from last Wednesday until today have been in Williams Lake,” said Tomkinson. While on the road, the crews and engine two did patrols and snuffed out a few spot fires. “The truck is back in the city and we’re not certain if it will be redeployed. It’ll all depend on the

need out there in the province,” said Tomkinson. Tomkinson said MFR received a call directly from the Office of the Fire Commissioner saying there was a need for an engine in Clearwater, even though he didn’t put the department on the volunteer list this year. “You can volunteer your fire apparatus every year — put it on the list for deployment — and we were going to stick a little closer to home, but the need was greater somewhere else,” said Tomkinson. He said MFR was also deployed by the Office of the Fire Commissioner in 2003 when the province created a

While there is a provincial state of emergency in effect currently, no provincial fire department has been implemented yet, said Tomkinson. Tomkinson told the Herald MFR could afford to spare the fire engine as the department has an adequate crew and other engines to handle local fires. Tomkinson said it’s important to be able to answer the call when neighbouring communities are in need. “If we need assistance, we’re going to be calling on the Office of the Fire Commissioner [to] supply us with equipment not unlike these communities,” said Tokmisnon.

INDIGENOUS GAMES

O’Donovan and lacrosse teams medal at NAIG Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

Young Nicola Valley athletes made quite an impression at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), which wrapped up on July 23 in Toronto. None more so than 17-year-old Sunshine O’Donovan of Merritt, who came home with three silver medals from the 19U rifle shooting competition She placed second in the three-position, prone and overall categories. This was O’Donovan’s second time representing Team BC at NAIG, as she also competed in 2014 in Regina. The Nicola Valley’s Isabella Aljam-Antoine also competed in rifle shooting, in the 16U

division. She just missed out on the medals, finishing fourth in threeposition, fifth in prone and fourth overall. In three-position, AljamAntoine was just one point out of third place. Three lacrosse players from the Merritt area returned home with bronze medals. Xni Grismer-Voght was a member of the Team BC 19U female lacrosse squad that finished third overall, while her older brother, Dakota, and Marcelo Bose also finished third in the 19U male category. Young Taylor Shackelly, 14, was scheduled to play for

the female Team BC squad at NAIG, but was unable to compete due to a broken foot. Four other lacrosse players with ties to the Nicola Valley had to settle for a fourth-place finish in the 16U male division. They were Clinton Kaboni, Bill Brewer, Jorge Arazola-Sam and Spencer Vaughan. Finally, in 19U female 3-D archery, the Nicola Valley’s Keely Tom finished ninth overall. Team BC topped the overall medal count at this year’s NAIG, winning 67 gold, 58 silver and 54 bronze for a total of 179.

In second place was Saskatchewan with 166, and third went to the host province, Ontario, with 137. The 2017 North American Indigenous Games involved over 5,000 participants and 2,000 volunteers. The 14 sports took place in venues throughout Greater Toronto, the region of Hamilton and Six Nations territories. All 13 Canadian provinces and territories were represented, as were 13 regions of the United States. You can go to the Merritt Herald online for an extended version of this story.

Local golfers take advantage of the wind Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

Golfers from the Nicola Valley know how to play in the wind. It’s the norm most days, especially in the afternoon. That home course advantage was evident on the weekend as local couples took both the low net and low gross titles under blustery conditions at the Merritt Golf & Country Club’s annual mixed open scotch-two-ball tournament. A total of 30 teams took part in this year’s one-day, 18-hole event. Low net winners were Fred Tomlin and Carla Bacon. They shot a round of 39-40-79, which when adjusted for their respective handicaps worked out to a factored score of 59.6. Their score was good enough for an almost

four-point victory over second-place Todd and Bev Scott, also from Merritt, who finished with an adjusted score of 63.2. Low gross winners for the second year in a row were the husbandand-wife team of Eric and Deb Montgomery who put together an impressive round of 35-39-74. While Tomlin is a veteran of the links game, Bacon has just a couple of seasons under her belt. She’s proving to be a quick study. “Everything went well,” said Bacon. “If I didn’t have a good shot, Fred did. We seemed to always have one good ball in play that we could use. We didn’t get into any major trouble, and even managed a couple of birdies.” As for the gale-force winds at times, Bacon said that she has learned

very rapidly in her young golfing career how to go bigger when necessary. “We were consistently hitting one or two clubs up because of the wind, and trying to keep the ball low for the most part,” she said.

SPORTS MIXED SLO-PITCH

Late-inning drama highlights slo-pitch finals Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

A couple of nailbiter finishes capped off a great weekend of baseball at the annual Merritt mixed slo-pitch league championships on the weekend. Two out of the three final games saw things decided by walk-off hits in the bottom of the seventh and last inning of regulation play. In the ‘A’ final, Allysia Rodgers’ two-out, tworun triple broke a tie as City Furniture outlasted Detox 30-28 in a slugfest that saw lots of big hits and plenty of scoring. The top two seeds going into the weekend (with a combined regular-season record of 25-2-1) kept it close throughout Sunday’s championship game. There were multiple lead changes in the lively contest, as neither team was able to pull away on the scoresheet. The sides were tied at 23-23 after five innings. Detox went up by two, 28-26, in the top of the seventh, and tried to hold on, but City Furniture drew even again with two quick runs to begin the inning. The next two City batters flied out, setting the scene for Rodgers’ lategame heroics.

With the count at two-and-two, and Detox’s outfield pulled in to take away the short ball, Rodgers got a hold of one of Brandon Colwell’s pitches and sent it over the heads of both players in right field. Two runs scored and it was game over. The City bench emptied to congratulate Rodgers on her game-winning hit. “It was basically do-or-die for me when I went up to bat,” said Rodgers afterwards. “I knew the winning run was on base and there were two outs. I was sweating and shaking. I even asked my team for a sub to bat for me, but they declined.” Rodgers said she was a little bit mad when the count went to two-andtwo as she was sure that one of the called strikes missed the plate. “Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe I swung a little harder.” H-Rod (she’s married to Tom Harrington) admitted that victory over Detox was especially sweet as the two teams have a healthy, long-standing rivalry. They had even tied their earlier meeting 13-13 on Saturday. Both teams defeated the Wolfpack in other preliminary play by

scores of 32-17 and 20-10. Meanwhile, over in the ‘B’ final, it was a different script but an equally thrilling climax. The Non-Athletics battled back from a 13-0 deficit after four innings to win 23-20 against the Silver Bullets. Still trailing 20-11 going into their last at-bats in the openended seventh, the NonAthletics went to work with the sticks, scoring 12 runs of their own to snatch victory away from almost certain defeat. Once again, it was a walk-off hit that ended things, as Ian Ward’s three-run homer broke a 20-20 tie and added a few extra runs for good measure. The Non-Athletics got to the final with wins over Caught Lookin’ (1812), Not Even (16-7) and

the Benchwarmers (16-7) on Saturday, and a 9-8 cdecision over Not Even in one of two semi-finals on Sunday morning. Sunday’s ‘C’ final was the only one that lacked some late-inning drama as the Brew Jays outgunned the Mafia 33-13 to avenge a 15-10 loss to the same team on Saturday. Leading 21-13 after six, the Jays put the final nails in the coffin with another dozen runs in the top of the seventh and a blanking of the Mafia in their final atbats. Other Brew Jays scores on the weekend were 28-13 and 14-13 over Apex and 16-11 against Hopes and Dreams. A total of 16 teams took part in this year’s mixed slo-pitch wrap-up tournament. SPORTS JUNIOR HOCKEY

Cents sign centre from Greater Ontario league

Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

With main camp less than a month away, the Merritt Centennials continue to be busy building a roster for the 2017-18 BCHL season. The club announced this week the signing of 18-year-old centre Ashton Stockie from Stratford, Ontario. The six-foot oneinch, 185-pound Stockie played last season for the Kitchener Dutchmen of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. In 60 regular season and playoff games with the Dutchmen, he scored 16 goals and added 28 assists for 44 points. Prior to his one season in Kitchener, Stockie played 40 games with the Waterloo Wolves AAA midgets, racking up five goals and 23 assists. This latest acquisition comes on the heels of three announced signings earlier in the month: forwards Brendan Schneider, 18, and Matthew Kopperud, 17, from Wesley, Ontario and Denver, Colorado respectively, and 17-year-old defenseman Jackson Munro out of

Vancouver. “Ashton was first seen by our regional scout in Ontario, Brandon Shaw,” said Cents’ head coach and GM Joe Martin. “He watched as Ashton went from a depth player with Kitchener in the regular season to a real go-to guy in the playoffs. He really progressed. “Ashton’s got a hard shot, and it comes off quick,” added Martin. “He gets lots of pucks to the net, and he’s strong down the middle at both ends of the ice — a good, honest 200-foot player. He plays a hard game, and that takes its toll on opposing players.” In a press release, Martin also said, “When meeting with Ashton, I was impressed with his maturity and values. Combine that with his work ethic, and he will succeed.” Stockie, for his part, is excited about coming out west to continue his hockey career. “I always thought the BCHL would be a good route for me, because ultimately I want to play in the NCAA,” he said from his family cottage near Grand Bend on the shores of Lake Huron.

“I’ve heard that it’s awesome hockey, and I also think it will be great to live in B.C.” Stockie has learned quite a bit about the BCHL brand of hockey

from other players from his hometown and nearby Waterloo who have played or are presently playing in the league. Coincidentally, all three names he mentioned

Coyote Collision Men’s Open next From Page 20 Deb Montgomery didn’t think their score of 74 (for the second year in a row) would hold up as best low gross. “There were some good teams out there,” she said, “but a lot of people who come to the Merritt tournament aren’t really used to a windy course and find it quite difficult. Saturday was very challenging.” Like Tomlin and Bacon, the Montgomery’s regularly played a bigger club than the distance would normally call for, and tried to keep their shots down. “You try to keep the ball under the wind,”

said Deb. “I’m not that good at it, but Eric is.” The next major event at the Merritt Golf & Country Club is the Coyote Collision Men’s Open, slated for August 18 to 20. Last year’s low gross winner of the men’s open was Adam Kirnan from Kamloops, with a one-stroke victory over Merritt’s Steve Doubinin. Low net winner was Dan Hildebrand. September 6 will see the playing of the Black’s Pharmacy Senior Men’s Open that was postponed from June due to flooding on the Merritt golf course. The winner of that event in 2016 was Merritt’s Tom Lutz with a score of 72.

news, rumors that the hockey team might be losing some players to the rival United States Hockey League (USHL) have been confirmed by Martin. Forwards Tyler Ward, Michael Regush and Zach Risteau, along with defenseman Zach Metsa have all decided to seek their fortunes south of the border with teams in Tri-City, Wash., Youngstown, Penn., and Chicago. All four have already committed to play for U.S. colleges or universities beginning in the fall of 2018. Although disappointed at the loss of four important players who were expected to return this season, Martin said it’s the new reality in hockey at all levels. “The landscape is changing rapidly. For many, loyalty to a team, a community, a program doesn’t exist anymore,” the coach said. “Trying to build a team [in Junior A] when you don’t have a draft and you don’t have ownership [of prospects] is very difficult. Every player you talk to is talking to five or six other teams — and not just in your league.”

I’m a hard worker, and a good defensive centreman who can chip in offensively.” Stockie is spending July and part of August training at a boot camp run by the dad of Buffalo Sabres’ forward Ryan O’Reilly. “We work out for three hours a day till one o’clock, and then we’re on the ice,” he said. Stockie is set to fly out to B.C. on Aug. 18, a few days prior to the start of the Cents’ training camp. He’ll acquire some wheels in Vancouver, and drive up to Merritt shortly thereafter. Ashton’s younger sister, Skyler, 16, will also be in Vancouver at the same time, playing softball at the midget Nationals. “She’s actually a bantam-aged player, but she got picked up by an Oakville team for the Canadian midget championships,” said her brother. “She’s a really good player.” In other Cents’
