BC introduces farmers preparedness fund

Farmers and ranchers in B.C. will be better equipped to take on extreme weather events, such as those seen in the Nicola Valley and the Interior, thanks to new provincial funding. Photo/Herald File Photo

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM In response to the climate emergency, which has seen unprecedented weather events devastate communities in B.C. like

never before, the provincial government is taking a step towards supporting farmers in their emergency preparedness. The

Minister of Agriculture and Food, Lana Popham. Photo/Herald File Photo

new program will provide funding to help food producers be more resilient against flooding, fires, and extreme heat events. The flooding and wildfires of the past two years have seen livestock killed in the hundreds of thousands, as well as the destruction of usable land and processing facilities. To help farmers and ranchers better prepare for future events, the Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program will support as much as $1.5 million in risk assessments and infrastructure upgrades to farms in the province this year. “Over the past year, we’ve seen the

extreme impacts of climate-related weather events on our farming communities, and we are taking action to support farmers and ranchers with climate-change adaptation tools and projects,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Agriculture and being able to feed British Columbians is intricately tied to climate change, and by taking increased steps to focus on how we can best prepare for and mitigate future climate impacts, we will be able to better protect the livelihoods of our food producers while strengthening our food security and

food economy.” During the flooding event in November 2021, as well as the 2021 wildfire season, the Highway 8 corridor between Merritt and Spences Bridge was devastated by extreme weather. Formerly prime land for both grazing and growing, it now sits burnt, washed out, and still mostly inaccessible. While supporting the region’s recovery efforts, the Province also hopes to build resilience to future events across B.C. The funding covers Firesmart infrastructure assessments, as well as retrofits that enhance wildfire safety. The same applies to the level of flood prepared-

ness of a farm’s fuel and feed storage. Funding is also available to mitigate heat stress of both crops and livestock, as well as shading and other heat protection retrofits. Up to $35,000 is available in cost-shared funding. “It goes without saying that we have experienced some extreme weather in the past, and we will continue to see it in the future,” said Kevin Boon, general manager, BC Cattlemen’s Association. “The best opportunity we have is to be prepared. An investment in preparedness and sound planning on the landscape is crucial to be able to continue to produce high-quality, affordable food for British Columbia’s consumers and steward the land responsibly while we do so.” For more information on the new program and funding, visit: https://www2. gov.bc.ca/gov/ content/industry/agricultureseafood/programs/extremeweather-preparedness. The current intake is open until August 15, 2022.

TNRD donates to Merritt organizations

TNRD Area ‘N’ and ‘M’ Directors, Herb Graham and David Laird, used part of their discretionary funding to support two local organizations that felt the effects of COVID-19 restrictions. Marius Auer/Herald

must be met. They added that both the Seniors Association and the Cents have suffered greatly during the pandemic, especially in their fundraising ability. “The seniors, for the last two years of COVID, haven’t had the opportunity to raise any sort of funds,” said Laird, TNRD director, and a former Merritt mayor. “I went over and talked to them, and what they’re doing now is planning to give out free meals to the seniors. They needed some new equipment in the kitchen, so I suggested that we get a thousand dollars from each of us.” With the extra dollars now in their bank accounts, the Seniors Association and Cents team have a helping hand as they prepare to give back to the community, and for another season on the ice. Some of the fund-

ing received by the team will go towards the Centennials Annual Icebreaker event, a charity function in support of the local hockey club. Moving forward, both organizations, as well as both TNRD directors, are focused on supporting the community as it recovers from a turbulent two years.

Two local area directors with the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) are giving back to the community, partnering up to donate $3500 to two Merrittbased non-profit societies. Directors Herb Graham and David Laird donated $750 each to the Merritt Centennials, and $1000 each to the Merritt Senior Citizens Association, aiding in the group’s COVID recovery. While the TNRD itself offers grants and other funding streams that non-profit organizations and charities can apply for, the cash for these donations came from an annual contingency fund that

“We still had some discretionary funds, so we thought we would help the senior citizens, because we are senior citizens. The Centennials hockey club provides a great service to our community so we helped them out, too.” Both organizations were grateful for the boost in funds at a time when social activities and community events are still recovering from years of restrictions, and are making official plans on how to best utilize the money. Graham added that reaction from both groups to the news of the donations were highly positive. While this source of funding isn’t an official one that local organizations can apply for, the TNRD directors said their process for deciding where to distribute funds is calculated, and strict criteria

Beating the heat With the weather turning up the heat, I intend to stay completely cool with one of my favourite summer IZAIAH REYES drinks, iced HERALD coffee. EDITOR Before I elaborate on my beverage of choice, I would like to acknowledge that milk tea is my all time favourite drink. However, the heat made me lose motivation to make my own, and I will not be driving to Kamloops regularly to pick some up. Therefore, I have to go to my other go-to, a nice tall cup of iced coffee. My history with this drink dates back to 2019, when my girlfriend still worked for Tim Hortons. She would always bring me a large iced coffee that she customized with different syrups and creamers. Last summer, I went to 15 different coffee shops across Calgary, trying different versions of iced coffee, from the fan favourite iced caramel macchiato to the more eccentric lavender infused latte. I love some versions more than others, but my overall love for the drink was definitely solidified. For this week, I am using the Starbucks creamer which I bought for eight dollars. The price is close to how much a venti iced latte is at their store, but it can make me way more drinks than that. This along with the free coffee I have at work saves me a lot of money. So cheers to being frugal and staying cool while doing it!

From the Herald archives: July, 1947

LOCAL BOWLERS COMPETE IN VANCOUVER

Editor, I would like to convey my sincerest gratitude to Stoyoma Dental, Cascade Family Dental, and Dentistry at Merritt for their generous donations to my capstone project. Last month, I graduated from MSS and next fall I will be attending the University of Alberta to complete a degree in biochemistry before going on to their dentist program. My final grade 12 capstone project was supposed to be related to my future career, so I put together a presentation to educate elementary students on oral health and hygiene. I wanted to hand something out to the students after the presentation to encourage them to put what they had learned into practice. I reached out to the dental clinics in Merritt for only toothbrushes and toothpaste, but to my surprise all 3 clinics supplied me with full dental goody bags, which made my presentation perfect! Their kindness and support touched my heart deeply, and I am forever grateful! Portia Wainwright Merritt, BC

TEGART: ‘Healthcare solutions needed now’ JACKIE TEGART VIEW FROM LEGISLATURE Our overwhelmed and understaffed health care system is having tragic consequences for many British Columbians facing long waits for care. Sadly, the worst-case scenario played out in our riding of Fraser-Nicola recently, when a senior in Ashcroft died of cardiac arrest with the emergency room

closed and no local ambulance available. My heart goes out to the family and friends who lost their loved one in this tragic way. Ashcroft is just one of a number of communities facing routine closures of its emergency room due to staffing shortages. On a recent weekend, six ERs around the province were temporarily closed, forcing patients and their families to travel significant distances to larger centres. The trouble is, even those hospitals are struggling to cover shifts. Our doctors, nurses and

other health care staff are doing their best to keep up, but they feel overwhelmed and have expressed concern about the risk to patients. The Official Opposition has pleaded with this government to take the situation seriously and take some tangible action to improve it. We have long been calling for a health human resources plan, but the government still hasn’t come up with one despite promising to do so. The Opposition has also suggested a 30-day action plan to address issues around primary care, because we know

act quickly — so that everyone has access to timely, quality care no matter where they live in British Columbia.

The local bowlers won runner-up in two of the major events in the B.C. Tournament week at Vancouver. R. Drybrough, J. Nisbet, W. H. Brown, and R. Nisbet (skip) fell short in the final for the Bowser Trophy while of J. Nisbet and W. H. Brown, were defeated in the final for the Mercer Cup. The remaining four players made creditable showing without reaching the final games.

PREVENT THEFTS FROM YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE Here a few helpful hints to help prevent motor vehilcle break-ins: 1 Don’t leave purses or valuables inside vehicles overnight. 2 Lock vehicles when exiting, make it a habit. 3 If leaving valuables in a vehicle; hide from sight. 4 Park in a well lit area. 5 Report any thefts, damage or suspicious persons to police

The community showed up to support the 28th annual ‘Show ‘n Shine’ at Central Park this weekend. Marius Auer/Herald

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM The summer heat was as undeniable as the sounds of classic cars, laughter, and music during the 28th annual ‘Show ‘n Shine,’ hosted by the Nicola Valley Cruisers Car Club Association at Central Park. Attendees to this

year’s iteration of the iconic Merritt car show enjoyed a day of fun in the sun, with close to 100 vehicles lining Central Park for display. A number of classic, sports, and custom cars were present, as well as a selection of local vendors

and food trucks. T-shirts were available for sale, raising funds to cover the cost of the event. Additional funds are being donated to a local family impacted by November’s flooding. Final numbers are still being counted. In addition to the usual ‘Show ‘n Shine’ activities, the Cruisers

Club partnered with the Merritt Rotary Club for this iteration of the show, bringing electric vehicles and bikes into the show for the first time. Merrittonians were given the opportunity to ride an e-bike, as well as discuss the benefits of electric modes of transportation. The Merritt ‘Show ‘n Shine’ is

known provincewide for its cooling grass surface rather than the hot asphalt of parking lots many shows offer. The Cruisers Club says it is excited to continue bringing this event to the community.

Province of BC introduces new flood resiliency funding would be eligible for up to $10 million in funding. Regional districts may put forward joint applications of up to $20 million with communities in their area. Natural approaches to flood mitigation, including the use of natural buffer zones and existing infrastructure, can be of benefit to any community wishing to prepare for and possibly prevent flooding, says the provincial government. Projects look-

ing to access the funding must be started by October 7, 2024, and completed by March 31, 2027. “Climate change has created many challenges for our province, including devastating floods. Last year’s catastrophic atmospheric river affected many in our province, and we must work together to prevent and mitigate the damage of these events. By creating more access to funds

for flood prevention, our families and communities will have a safer future,” added Minister of Forests Katrine Conroy. Applications are open for the ARDM program until October 7, 2022. For more information, or to apply, visit https:// www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/ safety/emergency-management/ local-emergency-programs/financial/ardmp.

Coldwater School First Nations and local governments in BC will now have the opportunity to access a pool of $81.8 million in joint provincial and federal funding for flood prevention related infrastructure upgrades. Izaiah Reyes/Herald

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM First Nations, local governments, and regional districts now have access to new provincial funding for projects that build or reinforce infrastructure, including natural infrastructure, in an effort to prevent future flooding events. The funding, which comes in collaboration with the federal government, looks to support communities recovering from flooding while also increasing their resiliency to future climate events. The Province of BC’s new Adaptation, Resilience and Disaster Mitigation (ARDM) program is a $81.8 million fund, which includes a federal contribution of $44.4 million. Funding is available for infrastructure projects to prevent flooding such as dikes, flood walls, and pump stations, as well as any upgrades to existing fixtures. The fund also allows for the opening of natural water courses, as well as the restoration of wetlands and natural shoreline protection buffers. “Last year’s atmospheric river events were a stark reminder that flooding can happen anywhere in B.C., at any time,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “With this new program, we’re supporting First Nations and local governments to not only prepare their communities for flooding events, but to help prevent them from happening in the first place.” By accessing the funding and implementing these changes, the Province says communities can mitigate their risk of flooding and more easily adapt to climate-related flooding effects. The City of Merritt, which was heavily damaged during the November 2021 flooding event,

NatureKidsBC Merritt pulls over 260 pounds of knapweed

Merritt NatureKidsBC chapter still pulled an impressive 262lbs of knapweed despite their lower turnout. Photo/Rachel Whitehouse

Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM The local chapter of NatureKidsBC hosted its annual ‘Weed Pull’ event in an effort to preserve a rapidly disappearing ecosystem in the province. Managing to pull over 260 pounds of knapweed during their day at the Laurie Guichon Memorial Grasslands Interpretive Site, near Lundbom Lake, the small team of volunteers contributed towards reducing the invasive plant population in a sensitive area. NatureKidsBC is an organization focused on educating children and families

about conservation and the great outdoors. The local chapter is made up of co-leaders Rachel Whitehouse and Sarah Desrosiers and approximately 10 active family members. With this year allowing the return of the event, the club’s goal is to complete a challenge set out by the TNRD. “This was our third year. We’ve registered for the Thompson Nicola Regional District’s Invasive Plant Committee’s weed pull challenge. They run that every year for organizations to win a $250 honorarium to their club for pulling the most weeds.” They removed a significant number of invasive knapweed plants, bringing their entry’s weight to 262 pounds. Other animal and plant life in the area can suffer from the plant’s presence, especially in highly sensitive areas like grasslands. Their 262 pound number is an impressive feat for a team whose numbers were hindered by the pandemic. “It was just myself and the other coleader, and our families, unfortunately. Probably because it’s the first year people have been able to go out and do things,” said Whitehouse with a laugh. “The weed pull is a really important event because less than one percent of B.C. is grassland ecosystem, and it’s one of our more endangered ecosystems. We’re losing it very heavily to invasion by

weeds and development. Anybody we can get out to educate about the grasslands is great.” Moving forward, the club will continue to host its regular events, as well as educate themselves and the community through a variety of mediums. Guest speakers, interactive exhibits, and exciting excursions are often part of regular club programming. The non-profit organization has a number of events coming up

this summer. “We run a different nature-themed event once a month throughout the year, and they’re generally on a Saturday. The last one we had was a learn-to-fish event. Our next event is on August 6, and we have the BC Wildlife Park coming to do a reptile event.” To get involved with NatureKidsBC Merritt chapter, or for more information, contact merritt@naturekidsbc.ca.

Young Merritt pilot earns license to fly before driving permit

Susana Scholtens with her dad, Geoff, and sisters, Lily and Yvonne. Photo/ Geoff Scholtens

Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM Not many people can say that they are a licensed pilot. Flying is a very challenging skill to have that takes hours of studying and practice in order to master. However, in Merritt there is a family of pilots, the Scholtens, whose youngest girl already had a license to fly before she could even drive. “It’s pretty funny how I can fly people around but I can’t drive them anywhere,” said Susana Scholtens, the 17 year old who only has her learners license but already has her private pilot’s license, allowing her to legally fly anyone on a plane. The young pilot actually got her learners license before even doing flight training, but due to the high volume of work she had to put in for fly-

ing, driving had to take a back seat. “I already got used to flying when I started driving so it was a little bit different because other airplanes aren’t that close to you when you’re flying,” “When I was driving, things were so close to me that it would freak me out a bit. I’m used to a lot more space when flying.” Scholtens along with her two sisters, Lily, 22, and Yvonne, 19 took a course at Vayu Aviation in Kamloops, back in the summer of 2021. “We spent the whole summer together, every weekend in Kamloops,” she said. “We got to see each other fly, we never flew together but each of our experiences are the same and it was very nice.” The sisters had

their father, Geoff as their class 4 instructor during their time at Vayu. Geoff has been in aviation for most of his life and had last been teaching in the late 90’s. “I didn’t expect them all to be interested in it. I took them for rides as a father but their interests, basically, developed on their own,” he explained. “We’re a family that does lots of things together and flying was just one of those things.” The Scholtens moved to Merritt, from China in 2016. After settling down, Geoff Scholtens was able to buy a sea plane in 2019. This gave him the opportunity to fly his girls around. “When my wife said I could buy an airplane, she said ‘I’d also like you to be able to teach your daughters.” Susana Scholtens recalled being around the airport when her father was working on the newly purchased aircraft. She remembered flying over Nicola Lake with their plane, inspiring her to learn how to fly as well. “We flew around the lake and was an awesome experience,” Scholtens recalled. “Being able to fly and see all the sceneries, the rush of adrenaline from the fact that I’m really doing this,

it makes me think that God is really good for allowing me to see his creation this way. It made me really want to become a pilot.” “Susana’s a natural learner and she is very studious,” said her dad. “Most pilots do about 40 hours of ground school, she did about 120 hours. When she got into an airplane, she knew all the theory

so the practical aspect came easy for her.” On October 19, 2021, Susana Scholtens was able to get her recreational license after taking her flight test allowing her to fly on her own, with passengers, around Canada. Earlier this year, on April 25 she was able to secure her private pilot license which allows her to fly on her own, with passengers,

Lower Nicola Band School

around the world. According to Scholtens, the experience was very rewarding and she recommends it to people considering getting their own license. “I would say go for it, It’s a little bit hard with the workload but it’s definitely worthwhile to do it, you meet a lot of great people, and you get to fly a plane which is really awesome,” she

explained. “Some things are definitely easier than it looks. When we take off, it’s a very easy experience, you hit the throttle and when you hit 75 mph you just lift your nose and up you go.” Scholtens assisted her father in recent Community Airport Day on Sunday, July 16. She will be helping the pilots flying in an exhibition through radio

to coordinate them, avoiding any collisions in the air. She is also currently working on getting her float rating, allowing her to land planes in the water. On top of all of this, Scholtens looks forward to taking her drivers test in September so she can finally travel both by air and by land.

ment manager. Hailing from the Lower Mainland, Mullin is no stranger to the City of Merritt, saying she and her husband have camped here for years. The couple are avid outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy the scenery the Nicola Valley has to offer. When she heard of the damage Merritt sustained during the November 2021 flooding, Mullin was saddened. She hopes to be a part of Merritt’s recovery. “It was heart-wrenching to witness the damage to the Merritt area. I have a great deal of empathy for all those who had to undergo such disruption to their lives,” said Mullin. “I am encouraged to see the community rally together to help the recovery effort and I look forward to seeing the community built back better.” Mullin’s experience widely varies in scope, offering a perspective from years working in both municipal government and private sector positions across B.C. Her wheelhouse is communications and economic development, with engagement being added to her plate for her work with the City.

The engagement portion of her position has not been defined by a certain city program or procedure, but Mullin is up to the task. She said her previous years of experience in community engagement positions, as well as experience with a multitude of media platforms, excited her about what’s to come in her new role. “One of the things that’s different about this job is that it’s both communications and engagement. The vision for this position is that I’ll spend some of the time out there engaging with the community. I’m not sure exactly what that looks like as it’s an evolving plan.” Mullin hopes to engage Merrittonians in a variety of ways, both in-person and online. In previous roles, Mullin had success setting up tables to interact with locals outside of prominent community locations, such as grocery stores and civic centres. She is already hard at work in her new role. One thing Mullin said she has noticed, since starting with the City of Merritt, is the high workload and low level of staffing at City Hall. The City’s website currently has numerous positions open, including

several department head positions. She said she has joined a positive and hardworking team. “I’m just realizing that everybody here is really hard working and committed. Everyone is doing their best, this is an awesome team. It’ll take some time to get to that recovery stage. We’re trying to get back to planning things instead of just reacting.” Moving forward, Mullin will begin to build her communications plan and engage Merrittonians. She will be seen around the community engaging residents, but work out of City Hall. Mullin reports to Greg Lowis, director of corporate service for the City. It is clear that Mullin’s work is driven by a passion for the community. “I love Merritt. I love the people here, there’s such great community spirit and everybody has been so helpful. I love the climate and the outdoors, it’s just gorgeous here,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier to be here in Merritt. You’ve got a great team at City Hall. I love the community spirit and I look forward to helping the community.”

While Merritt is undoubtedly a hockey town, this experience was one Steel says was previously unavailable in Merritt. He added that it remains inaccessible for some, which struck a chord with him. “Myself, growing up, I was in a position where my family couldn’t afford the extras. I wouldn’t have been able to go to a camp like this, especially since I had a sibling who was also in hockey, so it’s quite the expense.” Steel engaged local business to sponsor children who can’t afford to attend his camp due to economic hardship, being impacted by flooding, or other financial reasons. He said response has been great, with multiple local small businesses stepping up to support their home-town hockey players. “I currently have eight businesses who have sponsored an entire child each, so we’ll have eight sponsored children attending the camp this year. There definitely is still more room if local businesses or people would like to sponsor spots.” The Steel Training Company 2022 Hockey Camp will take place from August 23 to 26. Local softball player plays in BC Summer Games Marius Auer REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

A young local softball player represented the City of Merritt at the BC Summer Games in Prince George recently, bringing home a silver medal after a four win, one loss weekend for his Thompson Okanagan U16 team. Merritt local Wyatt Streek, a 13 year old softball player heading into Grade 8 at Merritt Secondary School this fall, is no stranger to pulling his weight on a team. When he was selected to be a part of the BC Summer Games on the July 24 weekend, Streek knew he would be the youngest player on the team by a few years. He was more than up to the challenge. “I’m very proud, because he’s only 13. He’s the only 13 year old on the team, and the rest are 15 and 16,” said Darcie

Kernachan, Streek’s mother. “I wanted to get it out there that he’s made it this far and he was really excited to get out there.” Speaking with the Herald, Streek says he had been hard at work training leading up to the games, including a practice game with his team of U16 players from across the Interior of B.C. Streek has played softball since he was 9 years old, and truly has a ‘soft spot’ for the sport. The BC Summer Games is a provincially sponsored event composed of dozens of teams from across the province, competing in 21 sports in a variety of skill levels. As a player for the Thompson Okanagan’s U16 boy’s softball team, Streek says it feels great to be selected and represent his hometown of Merritt. “It’s been really good, and it’s been fun. I’m really happy because this is my first

opportunity at something like this, and being selected out of a small town is pretty cool,” said Streek. Three other local athletes took part in the summer games, representing the Nicola Valley and surrounding area in softball, rowing, and lacrosse. The Herald has reached out for comment. The event was highly popular, with thousands attending to take part and show off their athletic abilities. “What an amazing experience for all. A ton of gratitude to our sponsors Summit Electric, Borrow Enterprises, and Clearwater Minor Ball. Congratulations boys! You made us proud,” added Kernachan. The BC Winter Games will be held in Vernon from March 23 to 26, 2023. Player selections for its teams have not yet been finalized.

Evangelical Free Church hosts volleyball camp Izaiah Reyes NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM

The Merritt Evangelical Free Church, with the help of Athletes in Action, hosted a volleyball camp at Merritt Secondary School (MSS), from July 18 to 22. The camp was held to teach and train kids between the ages of 10 and 14, further establishing the sport in Nicola Valley. The volleyball camp took place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday. Evangelical Free Church Pastor Josh Dekker is one of the main organizers of the whole event. He noted that this is the first time the church did an event like this. “We want to let the kids develop their skills more than just during the season,” said Dekker, who also coaches the MSS jr. girls volleyball team along with his wife, Cassidy Dekker. “Cassidy’s cousin, Roxanne, reached out and said ‘we run camps in the summer time. If this is something you’re interested in, we would love to come to Merritt.” The camp only took three months to be organized. It marks the first time Evangelical Free worked with Athletes in Action. The non-profit Christian sports

ministry provided coaches and shirts for the camp while the church booked the venue, promoted the event, and provided the campers with a pizza lunch on their last day. “It’s awesome to see the kids in the summer time, to let them run around and work on their skills. We were able to hit every skill in volleyball; passing, setting, spiking, blocking, and defense,” Dekker explained. “Only three or four players, from all the kids here, have played organized volleyball. Everybody else only has experience from their school, through gym class, so its been pretty cool to see kids really start from scratch.” Among the experienced players, from the crop of 21 campers, was Tevin Rooke. The Grade 7 athlete heard about the camp through his youth group at the Evangelical Free Church. “Everyone here is always super fun to be around,” he said. “There’s a few pretty good players here and they’re a lot of fun to go up against.” Rooke has two years of playing experience at Bench Elementary. He was happy about further developing his skills at the camp. “We had drills each morning and that

With limited to no prior experience, the majority of campers used the volleyball camp as their introduction to the sport. Izaiah Reyes/Herald

taught me a lot.” Being an event sponsored by the church, the campers also had conversations with Dekker and other church volunteers about religion. “At this event, we do talk a little bit about the bible and Jesus, each day,” Dekker explained. “I want these kids to love sports but also for them to know and appreciate Jesus.” The success of the event has opened up the possibility of future camps to be done in Merritt.

Dekker and the rest of the volunteers look forward to future events. “This whole idea and format would be something that we’d want to do again. We would like to improve on what is already here for next time,” he said. “There plenty of kids in this town and many who we want to introduce to volleyball. Working together as a team, for a common purpose is an amazing thing. It builds character every moment you’re playing it.”

Terrance W. Smyth (Terry) June 16, 1936 - July 18, 2022

Terry will be sadly missed after passing away peacefully at Gillis House after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Terry is survived by his loving wife Myrna (nee Pell) of 63 years of marriage, his 3 children, Mark (Lucile), Steven (Tammy) and Penny Sirkia (Gary), as well as 2 sisters, Charlotte Wright and Reta (Mike) Grieve, grandchildren, Darcy, Stephanie, Travis and Tanner, as well as numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his father Ralph and mother Agnes (nee McCreight), sisters Isabelle, Kathleen (nee Rix), and brothers Jimmy, Doug and Larry. Terry was born and lived in the Nicola Valley most of his life. His love for the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping with his family and friends was his passion. Whether it was baseball, hockey, rodeos or boating at the lake, Terry would devote his time to his children and anyone else’s who happen to be around. Having a strong work ethic, honesty and generosity, were values he firmly believed in and tried to pass on. Terry worked in the sawmill industry for about 45 years, starting as a labourer in the bush mills and continuing on to become a Saw-filer with Weyerhauser Can. until his retirement. As the Head or Lead hand of the saw-filing department, him and his crew gained a lot of respect among other Weyerhauser sawmills they worked with (from Alberta and Washington) by assisting in designing new sawing systems. Through his career, he got to know a lot of co-workers, some of whom became longtime friends as well as hunting or fishing buddies. Often you would see Terry walking with his dogs, stopping and chatting with anyone he came upon, and by chance tell one of his stories from the old days. His belief was that all people make mistakes. But if they work hard, they can correct those mistakes and become a better person for it. As per Terry’s wishes, there will be no service or memorial. A “Celebration of Life” will be held at a later date.

Thank You!  We would like to give a shout out to the ladies at Mandolins for the wonderful trays they made up for our family for a celebration of life. We were trying to support two local businesses in town to help out with this. Unfortunately, one of these businesses completely dropped the ball on a pre-order that we had made. At the last minute’s notice Mandolins made all our trays including extras in the time we needed with no problems at all. We just wanted to extend our thanks to these ladies for doing everything they could to make sure we had exactly what we needed. GREAT JOB GIRLS! Sincerely, Cory and Shelley Christensen
