“I’m very excited about this opportunity to work with Andrew and his caucus,” Horgan said. “We’re demonstrating today that between the Green and NDP caucuses, we have the support in the legislature. We’re anxious to get going, to start that transition.” Among the highlights of the 10-page agreement signed by the two parties on Tuesday, the NDP, with the support of the Greens, will do everything in its power to kill the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. Asked what went wrong for the Liberals during the election, after 16 consecutive years in power, Clark offered no insight. “It’s your job to sit around and figure out what went wrong — I’ll let you do that,” she told a reporter. “It’s my job to make sure we go forward.” Almost immediately after Clark’s press conference ended, Green Leader Andrew Weaver and NDP Leader John Horgan signed the agreement that will see them vote together on confidence motions.

A man facing charges after getting into a tussle with police officers at a bar in Merritt is now also facing a separate charge for murder. First-degree murder charges have been approved against Johnny Drynock, 22, who is accused of shooting 29-year-old Birinderjeet Bhangu outside a Comfort Inn Hotel in Surrey on March 17. A few days after the murder, the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) released a surveillance photo of a male believed to be the shooter, and as a result, received information that identified the suspect as Drynock, according to an RCMP press release. IHIT announced the charges had been approved on May 17.

Investigators can’t find bear Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

Conservation officers have called off their search for a predatory bear that attacked a jogger near the flagpole at Norgaard’s lookout last week. The jogger hiked up to the flagpole on May 25 and was proceeding back down another trail along the hillside when a brown-coloured black bear began pursuing him, said Conservation Office inspector Tobe Sprado. Sprado said the bear chased the man for about 500 metres. “While he was confronting the bear he fell down,” Sprado

Drynock had gun From Page 3 Drynock has been in custody since April 8 on an unrelated matter in Merritt. He and his brother Michael Drynock were sitting in the pub of the Coldwater Hotel that day when police conducting a bar walk approached them to check their ID. The two men bolted for the door and a fight ensued with police, resulting in Drynock being charged with possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon — a knife — and breach of probation. His brother Michael was charged with a breach of probation, as well as obstructing a police officer. A few weeks later Michael Drynock was arrested and charged again, this time for shooting at a group of people outside a house party on Coldwater Avenue. The media and the public played an integral role in identifying Drynock in the murder case, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

said. “The bear made contact with him and swiped at him with his paws, [but] he was able to get up and beat the bear off with sticks and rocks,” he said adding that the bear left the man alone after that. The man then continued down the trail and went to the hospital where he was treated for minor scrapes he sustained from the bear attack, Sprado said. “This bear was deliberately following and trying to make contact with [the jogger] for over a 15 minute period,” said Sprado. Sprado said a fiveman predator attack response team attended

in place on the weekend. Sprado told the Herald Wednesday (May 31) they didn’t receive any new reports of a brown coloured black bear in the area, or any bear complaint calls from Merritt residents

in other parts of town. The traps were removed on Sunday and a caution sign warning of the bear in the area was left in place, but will most likely be removed by the weekend. Sprado said bears will leave signs of feeding and scat if they’re residing in the area, which wasn’t the case in this instance. “More or less it could have been just an incidental incident. We don’t have a bear that seems to be habituated to that particular area,” said Sprado.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Robot take-over? There’s been much talk about the “robot revolution” in the media recently. Automation has already GWYNNE DYER killed milThe international lions of jobs, we are STAGE warned, and cannot be stopped. To former assembly-line workers and bank tellers whose jobs were automated out of existence two decades ago, that has the ring of truth. Ten years from now, it will probably also ring true to millions of former taxi-, bus- and longdistance truck-drivers. And automation may also be bringing us a political revolution. Many people suspect that shocking polical events like Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and a 30 percent vote for the ultra-nationalist Marine Le Pen in France’s recent presidential election are linked to the growing numbers of angry, jobless people in the Western industrialised countries. But wait a minute. What “growing number of jobless people”? The official unemployment rate in the United States is now down to 4.5 percent. That statistic, however, only counts those who are actively looking for work. It does not count those who have given up looking for work. If you include all those who are not working and not just the job-seekers, then 17.5 percent of American men of prime working age (24-55) are, to use the old word, “unemployed.” The last time US unemployment was at that level was in 1936, in the middle of the Great Depression. Moreover, this hidden reef of unemployed people is biggest in the former industrial heartland of the United States, now known as the Rust Belt, where a critical number of exDemocratic voters were so angry that

A troubling sign for bears and hikers The recent bear attack on a jogger just outside Merritt at the Norgaard lookout area has created quite the stir within our community. Many were shocked at the fact OTHMAR VOHRINGER that it happened in The relative proximity OUTDOORSMAN of the town, in an area daily frequented by hikers and dog walkers. According to conservation officers this has been a deliberate attack, not a defence attack. In other words, this bear was hunting a human. Fortunately, the jogger walked away from this encounter with minor injuries. The lookout and surrounding hiking trails were briefly closed to all public access but have since been reopened. While attacks by black bears are relatively rare and bears actively hunting humans are even rarer, they have occurred more frequently over the past few years. The B.C. government reports that so far this year, there has been an “upswing” in bears attacks. There are three reasons why bears attack

humans. The vast majority of attacks are carried out by mother bears defending their young. This happens when people get to close to bear cubs or accidentally walk between cubs and the mother. If a bear is surprised by humans the animal may attack or run away. These attacks are usually abandoned as soon the person creates a safe distance from the bear. Far worse are bear attacks carried out by males that actively pursue humans with the full intent to kill them. These animals are hunting and stalking humans, often for considerable distances. These are the situations that can lead to injury or worse for the victim, as the bear is determined to make contact with the human. But why have bear attacks become more frequent? There are two reasons. Over the past few years the provincial black bear population has shown a sharp increase. With their numbers estimated at 150,000, B.C. has the reputation of having the largest black bear population in the world. Black bears are notoriously territorial and with the population growing, young male bears will have to look for new territories to call their own, bringing them ever closer to human inhabited areas.

The other reason is that more people are discovering the outdoors as a refuge from hectic everyday life; camping hiking, hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreational actives are enjoying a renewed and growing popularity. More bears and more people result in more bear/human conflicts. The following advice and tips are not guaranteed to eliminate bear conflicts but will go a long way to avoid them. There is not one single measure that applies to all bears. For example, while the discharge of pepper spray may stop an attacking bear in its tracks, this same defence tactic may — in another bear — trigger an even more fierce attack. The same is true for announcing your presence to the bears in the area to give them a chance to walk away. This works very well in most cases but in some rare cases it might be like ringing the dinner bell. Still, for me, making noise is still the best defence against bear attacks. Given that many bear attacks are carried out by animals that have been startled by the presents of humans, letting them know you’re in the area is always a good idea. Wear bear bells, sing or talk loudly. Bears have a distinct dislike of dogs; be extra vigi-

OPINION LETTER

From the Herald archives: June 1, 1983

to the editor

Provincial politics in a nutshell Editor; There once was a man called Andrew Weaver with a bad case of Green party fever. Although he was an eager beaver and wanted to be a high achiever, he didn’t have a political lever, until he put down the receiver after negotiating with John Horgan, the NDP’s current conceiver. Together they hacked at their election promises with a meat cleaver until each one convinced the other to be a born-again believer. Then they directed their fury at Christy Clark, the wily Liberal deceiver. Hogan and Weaver are confident they will soon relieve her. Lloyd Atkins Vernon, B.C.

Solutions to full-scale automation must be found From Page 6 they switched to Trump and put him into the White House. This new reality is partly hidden by the fact that so many of these unemployed people have managed to wangle their way into disability benefits: one American worker in sixteen is now certified as disabled, whereas in 1960 (when health and safety standards were far lower) only one worker in 134 was. But back then the official statistics on unemployment were pretty close to the truth. The “angry men” (and angry women) who make up this hidden reef are the key group who voted for Trump (and Brexit,

and the National Front). The Americans among them have been told by Trump that their jobs were stolen by foreigners, but both in the United States and elsewhere they were actually mostly taken by automation. Not all the jobs will go, of course, but a study released in March by financial services firm PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) predicted 38 per cent job losses to automation in the United States in the next 15 years. The risk is not just mass unemployment, but the political radicalisation that comes with it. We’re not going to stop the automation, so we will have to redistribute the remaining work. We also have to find ways of put-

ting real money into the pockets of those who have no work, or else the whole capitalist business model will collapse. (Not enough customers.) And we have to find ways of subsidising people without treating them like “losers,” because that’s what really drove the the anger that put Trump in office. Otherwise, the populist demagogues who get elected in twenty years’ time may make us look back fondly on the Trump years. RESORT FLOODED BY RISING LAKE On July 1, 2017, Canada will celebrate its sesquicentennial — or 150th — annivesary. One-hundredand-fifty years worth of history is a lot to remember — so each week in 2017, the Herald will run this special section. On May 31, Canada’s longest bridge celebrated its 20th annivesary. The Confederation Bridge opened for interprovincial traffic between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick in 1997. The 12.9-kilometre-long bridge spans the Northumberland Strait, linking the island, at Borden-Carleton, to the mainland, at Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area.

Commemorative stamp issued on the day the Confederation Bridge was inaugurated. Photo courtesy of Library and Archives Canada

A remarkable feat of engineering, the bridge is the world’s longest across “ice-covered waters.” Approximately 4,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. Breaking down effective bear defense From Page 6 lant if you take your dog with you on a wilderness trip and keep it always on a leash. Avoid dense undergrowth, high grasses and other dense vegetation. These are the places where bears retreat to rest and sleep. Stay in the open where you have a good view of your surroundings; make a point of regularly surveying the area all around you for bears. If you see a bear or encounter fresh sign slowly back out. Never run — the bear will chase you. Avoid walking near known bear

food sources such as berry bush patches, wild rose bushes and clover patches. Whenever possible, take a partner along on your outdoor trips. Always carry approved bear pepper spray with you. Bear spray is a good defence against attacks and has been proven to work very well in over 90 per cent of attacks, even against grizzlies. The only downside to this product is that you have to be upwind of an attacking bear, if not the wind will blow the bear spray in your face and eyes rendering you unable to do anything but scream in agony.

An old useless advice still in circulation today is to play dead when a bear attacks. That is very bad advice. Bears are opportunistic feeders, meaning they eat dead animals, and humans, too. Playing dead could definitely get you killed. If the bear is upon you and makes contact, fight back with everything you have at your disposal, use a knife, walking stick, a stout branch, or whatever you have within reach that could serve as a weapon. This situation is no time to be concerned about the welfare of the bear. Your sole goal in this situation is to inflict

as much pain, even injuries, to the head of the bear as possible to discourage it from seriously harming or killing you. As a final advice on avoiding bear/human conflicts it is a good idea to obtain and study the bear safe brochure the B.C. government publishes. Every recreational outdoor user should be familiar with how to behave in bear country. Othmar Vohringer lives in the Nicola Valley. He is an animal behaviourist and outdoor writer for hunting magazines in Canada and the U.S.

The rising level of Nicola Lake has flooded Kokanee Beach and Resort near Quilchena. The lake level has risen substantially along with water levels in local rivers and streams during the spring runoff. George Cressy at Kokanee Beach says the flooding at his resort is worse than that of the high water in 1972 and 1978. The lake is at six feet above normal levels and has forced him to shut down the resort. Vacationers staying at the resort have had to leave. The restaurant had to shut down. Cressy said he estimates his loss of revenue at about $10,000. Two of the resort’s cabins have one or two inches of water over the floor.

POLICE FILES Charges laid in shooting

1 & 3 SUNDAYS OF EVERY MONTH CLEMES HALL, HWY #8 • 10AM - 3PM ST

by Michael Potestio

The Crown won’t pursue attempted murder charges against two men accused of shooting at a group of people outside a house party in Diamond Vale last month, but are proceeding with a multitude of others. Michael Drynock, 21, and Kleon Pop, 28, both face charges of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, possession of a firearm contrary to order, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes

and carrying a concealed weapon, RCMP Const. Ryan Dell told the Herald. Pop also faces a charge of using an imitation firearm, stemming from a separate incident earlier in the night, and a charge of uttering threats while Drynock has also been charged with assault. Crown decided not to pursue attempted murder charges as recommended by Merritt RCMP because it wasn’t likely to bring about a guilty conviction.

“All Crown told us is that they don’t believe there’s a substantial likelihood of conviction for the attempted murder,” said Dell. Both Drynock and Pop remain in custody and are expected to be back in court for bail hearing in Kamloops on June 1, Dell told the Herald. The two were arrested by an RCMP officer at gunpoint just before 9:00 p.m. on April 23. The two men are accused of firing multiple shots at a group of

four males outside of a house party in the 2500 block of Coldwater Avenue following an argument that night. Police told the Herald that when the two fired at the group, the four males ran back the way they came — towards Diamond Vale Elementary — with the two suspects following them. Upon searching the suspects, police found several rounds of

Crafts, produce, 2nd hand goods, baking and more! CALL 250-458-2513

ammunition, firearms paraphernalia and several other weapons were located on their persons and in a backpack, which they were carrying. A search of the field they were crossing at Diamond Vale Elementary led to the discovery of a 12-gauge shotgun and a SKS semi-automatic rifle nearby.

Stolen items recovered The Merritt RCMP is trying to return a trove of recently recovered stolen items to their rightful owners. The items were all found Monday morning (May 29) in a single location in town that “was stumbled upon by the police,” RCMP Const. Ryan Dell told the Herald. He said police are not disclosing the exact location the items were recovered from at this time. A variety of stolen goods were found including construction tools, power equipment, chainsaws, fishing gear, 25 cent candy vending machines, generators,

a pressure washer, hand tools, a stroller and some Dick Cepek brand tires. “We’d like to find the owners of all this stuff,” said Dell. Anyone who may be missing any of the aforementioned items is asked to contact the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262. Residents are advised to check their storage lockers and sheds in case they are missing items. None of these items are related to the string of break-ins reported last week, Dell said. He also said the items are not believed to be linked to other stolen property files police have

been investigating. “If we were able to link it to other files we wouldn’t be asking for the owners [to come forward], said Dell. “[They’re] definitely stolen items.” Dell said police don’t have an estimated dollar value for all the items recovered as they continue to catalogue everything. “Some of this stuff is quite valuable,” he said. “It’s a fairly sizeable haul. It was two truckloads of stuff,” said Dell. He said it’s too early to tell if any charges will be laid in relation to this find.

No charges stem from fires The Merritt RCMP has ended its investigation of two suspicious fires that occurred at the corner of Coldwater Avenue and May Street a few months ago. No charges will be coming as a result as police have been unable to determine how the fires began. RCMP Const. Ryan Dell Const. Ryan Dell said the origins of the fire Merritt RCMP remain unknown. In the early hours on Dec. 10, Merritt Fire Rescue responded to a fire that gutted the house on the corner lot of Coldwater and May Street. About three weeks later a shed on the same property went up in flames at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. The property was unoccupied at the time of both fires, and both the house and the shed have since been demolished.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS FIRE FIGHTING

Logan Lake shows off new hall Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

The community of Logan Lake has taken a step forward with the opening of a new $3.2 million fire hall. The new city facility was officially opened on May 24. In addition to the fire department, it is also housing a new 1,200 square foot emergency operations centre (EOC). The six-bay fire hall accommodates the current 24-member volunteer fire department and provides upgrades such as showers, an exhaust extraction system and a back-up generator. Logan Lake Fire Chief Dan Leighton told the Herald that having the building incorporate an EOC is “a

perfect example of what you can do in a small community with limited resources.” He said the former EOC was also located at the former fire hall, but that space was inadequate. Logan Lake Mayor Robin Smith told the Herald the new fire hall was completed on time and $100,000 under budget. The new fire hall also comes with rentable community spaces available for public events and conferences. “It’s a huge boost for us,” said Smith, adding that she thinks the building shows Logan Lake is making progress and planning for its future. “They outgrew the space that we had for them,” she said, adding

There will be a boost to the carbon tax, a move toward a $15 per hour minimum wage and the Site C dam will be reviewed. The two parties have also agreed to ban corporate and union donations to political parties, as well as contributions from non-residents of B.C. Among the other actions listed in the agreement, the sides committed to recalling the legislature within a month of the swearing in of the NDP cabinet; to introduce legislation to ban corporate and union donations and put limits on donations; to extend the term of government to four and a half years; to improve transit in metro Vancouver; to invest in education and a minister for health, health care and overdose funding; to move forward on more affordable childcare; to eliminate MSP premiums over the next four years; and to develop a province-wide poverty reduction strategy.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS STUDENT POWWOW

MERRITT CENTENNIALS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

THURSDAY, JUNE 14 @ 7:00 PM LOCATION: Nicola Valley Memorial Arena

merrittherald.com Story and photos by Michael Potestio/ Herald

R

ALL WELCOME - COME BE PART OF OUR 45TH SEASON

epresentatives of the Nicola Valley’s First Nations community, School District 58, and other local organizations proceeded proudly into the Lower Nicola Band Arbour in Shulus for the sixth annual school district student powwow on May 24. Students packed the arbour, listened to a few speeches from dignitaries and participated in some cultural dancing amidst drumming from the group Travelling Spirit. Elder Doreen Sterling thanked all the people who organized the event. She said when she was growing up she wasn’t allowed to practice her culture as a student of the residential school system. “We weren’t allowed to use our language. We weren’t allowed to sing and dance, and so to see it happening in my lifetime is super special,” Sterling told the crowd. Nicola Canford Elementary School principal Burt Bergmann told the crowd when he was growing up he realized that First Nations people didn’t enjoy the same freedoms as his family who immigrated to Canada from Europe. “They didn’t have the same freedom to practice their language, they did not have the same freedom to practice their faith, nor their culture,” he said. “They were treated just as poorly as my family was back where they came from.” Bergmann said that while the past can’t be changed the future can be. “I look at something like a powwow that we can all participate in, and the language that we can share and the culture we can encourage — I say this is hope for our future.” SD 58 superintendent Steve McNiven said approximately 45 per cent of their students declare aboriginal ancestors, and the student powwow is part of the district’s identity.

Beckett Finch, of the Nicola Valley Thunder bantam team, attempts to evade a defender on his way to the net. Michael Potestio/Herald

Thunder bantams fall short of win Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

A win was in their grasp, but the Nicola Valley Thunder bantam team had to settle for a 7-4 loss to the visiting Penticton Heat at the Shulus Arena Tuesday (May 30). The Thunder looked good early, netting the first goal just two minutes into the game courtesy of a shot from Captain Beckett Finch, who then made it 2-0 Thunder half way through the opening frame. The Heat got back in the game quickly in the second with a goal by Grady Nield just three minutes in to the period. After that the Thunder took a five minute major, which lead to assistant coach Dave Finch telling his team they needed to control their sticks. Luckily, shorthanded goals weren’t in short supply in this game as Beckett completed the hat trick, retaking the

lead for his team by making it 3-2 half way through the period. Part way through the second period, the Heat tied the game on a controversial call. Penticton took a slashing penalty, but Braedyn Aldridge scored right afterwards. The play wasn’t blown dead until after the goal was scored and the goal was allowed to stand at the referee’s discretion. After protest from the Thunder bench, the coaches were given a penalty as well. Momentum seemed to swing to the Heat’s side after that, as they took their first lead of the game with three minutes remaining in the period on a goal by Jacob Becker. The Heat made it 5-3 with seconds left in the middle frame and kept coming in the third period with a fourth straight goal to make it 6-3 just three minutes into the final frame. The Thunder would get one back thanks to Taylor Shackelly with

12 minutes left in the third, but Penticton added a dagger before the final buzzer rang. “We’re a young team,” assistant coach Finch told the Herald, adding that many of their players don’t even have a year of experience under their belt. “I think they played really well,” he said. In other Nicola Valley Thunder news, the peewee team had two wins on the weekend a the Shulus Arena. On Saturday (May 27) the Thunder shut out Shuswap 7-0 with three goals from Captain Lucas Schmid, and one each from Ostyn Fox, Carter Shackelly, Keagan McGifford and Rylan Falcone. Tyson Jarvis posted the goose egg in net. On Sunday (May 28) they defeated North Okanagan by a score of 8-3 with goals from Carter Shackelly, Gregory Miller, Ty Jackson, Rylan Falcone and Lucas Schmid who had three again.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Enduro debut set for Cow Trail weekend Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

June 9 to 11 is already shaping up to be the biggest weekend of the summer for mountain bike enthusiasts in the Nicola Valley, with the Cow Trail Classic and all the associated camps, fan-

fare and contests slated to return to Merritt. But it’s about to get even bigger. Merritt is getting set to host it’s first endurostyle racing event on June 11, in a cap-off of a busy weekend of riding in the Nicola Valley. And the race still has plenty of spots open

for adventurous local riders. “This is just a fun event — it’s free,” emphasized Darch Osborne, who is organizing the enduro race. The enduro race will be a different animal than the more-traditional Cow Trail loops, explained Osborne. In

enduro races, riders compete across a series of stages where only the downhill sections are timed — climbs uphill are not. Those looking to get a handle on what to expect at the 2017 Cow Trail Classic should turn to the Herald’s earlier preview of the

event (see the Merritt Herald, ‘Cow Trail Classic Looking Great’ page 26, May 11). But those looking to be the first to try ‘enduro’ racing in the Nicola Valley should get in touch with Osborne. Osborne aims to parlay a successful

demonstration event with approximately 40 riders this year, into an opportunity for Merritt to host an official race as part of the B.C. Enduro Series in 2018. “We’re calling for entrants — we’re calling for racers. The first two weeks of registration is open to Merritt-

people — it’s Merritt only,” said Osborne, adding that those who want to reserve a spot need to email him directly (Darch. osborne@hotmail. com). The race is set to take place on a few trails behind the B.C. Visitor’s Centre.

The New Zealand rugby diaries Reflections on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to one of the Lands Down Under in late March and early April of this year by members of the Merritt Secondary School girls’ rugby team. Part two of a two-part feature. Edited by Ian Webster Photos submitted

March 24- Maya Gregoire Today is the day my team and I will be going to Nga Taiatia School. Nga Taiatia is a Maori traditional immersion school. Myself coming from a Nkmaplqs I Snmamayatn ilk Sqilxtet School (Okanagan cultural immersion school) background, I was honoured to share a part of my First Nations ways. When we arrived at the school, the students did a Powhiri traditional welcome. The welcome was a very special opportunity for us Canadians to experience the Maori ways. Following the welcome, the teams combined and we started doing rugby drills together. They were kind enough to provide us lunch, so we buddied up with our hosts and they gave us a tour of their school. It was very different - with more of an outside learning space and zero lockers. After the tour, it was game time. I do not even remember the score, but I know it was really close. This game was a great learning experience for myself and my team. After the game, I gifted two eagle feathers that I brought from Merritt - one to the school principal and one to our host coach. Coming from half way around our world, I felt a significant responsibility to share a part of my Okanagan culture with theirs. Overall, I am so grateful to have had the chance to be part of this trip as it was more than a rugby trip and a chance to travel. It was very culturally enriching, and diverse in more ways than I could have ever expected.

March 28 - Xni Grismer, Grade 11 It was the last game day in New Zealand. We stopped at a beach on the way there. It had big waves and almost everyone was playing in the water because it was so hot out. When we arrived at the school, there was a wall with pictures of about a dozen national rugby team members that had attended this particular school. From that moment on, I knew we were in for a good fight. We lost pretty badly, but we played amazingly! It was one of our best games. On the way, back to the hostel, we stopped in a little town named Foxton to eat. Everyone branched off and got their own food. The meet-up place was at a park nearby. It had a fantastic playgorund, with a zip line, hamster wheel and a weird swing set that would go around in a circle. It could hold up to four people. The park also had a working train. We all played around and had a great time. We didn’t want to leave.

March 25 - Xni Grismer, Grade 11 It was an early start (like every day) as we were heading to the Waitomo Caves, the home of glow worms. The first cave that we entered looked like it was from a movie - it was amazing! We went through the cave and got to a place where we finally got to see glow worms; they looked like stars in the night. When we were leaving the cave, we took a boat along a little river and got to see thousands, if not millions, of glow worms. We went to the second cave which was probably only five minutes down the road. The beginning of it was like a spiral, and it looked like we were in a spy movie. The tour guide told us scary stories. It was so pretty down there. I loved it. After the caves, we had a couple of hours left till the game started, so we went to a kiwi habitat and finally got to see a real kiwi. Sadly we were not allowed to take pictures because they are nocturnal. We also got to see different lizards and birds. When we got to the stadium, we met a group of guys from Japan who were there for rugby as well and we took pictures together. The game was amazing! The Blues won! After the longest day ever, we finally got to go back to the hotel.

I was told Whakarewarewa (just call it Whaka(waka)) was a hot spring. You know, the kind where you just sit in Earths’ natural hot tub for an hour or so. Little did I, and apparently everyone else, know that Whakarewarewa is actually a small village on top of a geothermal landscape. Which is still really cool, and I am happy I went. The only problem was I decided not to wear any shoes. You know, that’s what you do in New Zealand - you don’t have to wear shoes half the time. I thought we were going to be lounging in some hot springs for a while then leaving, not taking a tour of the entire village. My feet were okay though. There was only one part of the ground that was really hot; I just hobbled across it as fast as I could. After the tour, we were able to watch a Maori cultural performance, and some of us got to eat corn that they had cooked in one of the geothermal pools. All in all, it was a good day. March 27 - Taylor Nicholls, Grade 9 Today was a travel day. We checked out of our hostel in Rotorua and packed up our vans so we could head out for Wellington. It was a long drive - roughly five hours. Just before reaching Wellington, we stopped at a little beach. The tide was out so we were able to walk on some the cool looking rocks and look for small sea animals and shells. By the time, we got to Wellington we were all ready for bed.

Waitomo glow worm caves

March 29 - Nika Beech, Grade 12 Today was pretty much a free day for us. Some went to the beach, some went shopping and others went on a hike. I, myself, decided to tag along with Kalea and we ended up going to the Te Papa Museum in Wellington. There was an exhibit showing prehistoric kiwi birds that were eight feet tall! Kiwis in this day and age are about a foot tall. After exploring for a bit, Kalea and I came across this really weird show - a brief history lesson on New Zealand. It was set in an old thrift store. It had stage lights to light up objects from the time they were talking about. It was one of those really artsy films that are really bizarre, and it made absolutely zero sense. After we did a little bit of shopping, our van drove about a half hour out of Wellington to find sunshine and beach. We stayed there for a couple hours. I decided to go on a hunt for some really cool sea shells. March 30 - Taylor Nicholls, Grade 9

March 26 - Nika Beech, Grade 12

Today was one of the, if not the, longest travel days of the trip. We left Wellington to head back to Auckland. The drive was about 7 hours. The van with mostly girls from Merritt stopped at a rugby museum for about an hour. During the drive, we ended up taking this really windy road. We came across a quad with a warning sign that said “Caution, stock ahead.” Naturally we were curious - it was a herd of sheep walking along the highway/ road being herded by 2 quads and a dog. It was one of the coolest and most different thing I have ever seen.

A wonderful cu lture; a wond erful

country

March 31 - Nika Beech, Grade 12 Today is the day we go home. Some are really excited, but I did not want to leave. New Zealand has been an experience of a lifetime. We had the option of either going to the airport and watching everyone’s bags or go to a park. I chose to go to the park with some girls from Castlegar and Nika. Once we arrived we played on the playground then decided to go on an adventure to find a coffee shop. Luckily, we found one. It served delicious food, and also had free Wi-Fi so we could update everyone one before we left the country. We found out that there was a hike we could take to the top of the mountain and see a volcano crater. The view was incredible; you could see all of Auckland. Instead of taking the path down, Nike, Naomi and I went straight down the grassy hillside. At the airport, we had to go through bag check, security and last but not least customs. It was a bitter sweet moment for everyone; we were all so sad that we were leaving such a beautiful country, but happy that we were about to see our families and sleep in our own beds.
