Court ordered

The Ministry of Energy and Mines ordered Highland Valley Copper to craft a solution to vibration in its heavy trucks and equipment after finding more workers are reporting back injuries.

Andy Schindler and his neighbour Wayne Rice examine a shed on Rice’s property. Rice estimates the flood has decreased the value of his home by about $100,000. (Right, top) The rapidly rising Guichon Creek turned what was once a pasture in Rice’s backyard into a riverbed. Rice’s aforementioned shed appears in the left side of the photo. same spot as before the water washed away his yard. Wayne Rice’s property, located just south of Schindler, is in similarly bad shape. The foundations of a shed near the back of his property have been entirely washed away, leaving three walls awkwardly leaning with no ground support. The innards of the shed are also gone — replaced with a mess of debris delivered from further upstream by the surging creek. Newly erected banks tower now over the creek, after workers from the Thompson Nicola Regional District were forced to deepen the channel to avoid further damage from water breaching the banks. Any chance of seeing the creek from Rice or

Schindler’s deck — and the value those views would add to a home — was eliminated with the deepening of the creek bed. For now, the neighbours are holding off on making any major landscaping repairs until they receive more information from the TNRD. But neither man holds out hope that the regional body will provide any kind of financial relief, despite a request made by the 85-year-old Rice for cash to pay for labourers to tear down his shed. “My house right now — I don’t know what it would have been worth, it wasn’t up for sale — but it’s worth about $100,000 less now, I’ve already had a guy come up and tell me,” he said. “There is a huge financial loss.” Rice also spoke of a

Faithful different kind of loss — one that can’t as easily be tracked in terms of dollars and cents. Washed away with half the contents of his shed were the plans and possibilities Rice and his wife had in mind for their home of 14 years. Though both men fall short of assigning blame,

they believe that there should have been more of an effort to mitigate the effects of a flood ahead of the event. “They knew what the snowpack was. They have to foresee warm weather coming, and they have to release water [from the Mamit Lake dam],” said Schindler.

Andy Schindler’s backyard was once a very peaceful spot. A pasture extended from the back of Schindler’s house in Lower Nicola towards the banks of Guichon Creek. Andy and his wife Debbie used the space to run a small hobby farm, raising chickens and horses on the property. A picture of a small pond which once existed on the property — big enough to float a dinghy across — remains pinned to the Schindler’s fridge. The pond is gone now though. So too are the chickens. And the pasture. Standing on the back deck of Schindler’s home now, you might describe the scene in front of you as something similar to the fields in France left misshapen from artillery during successive world wars. Where there was once green grass, there is now only a collection of medium to small size stones, washed smooth from a tumble down the river. Where the ground was once level, there is now a valley, with banks cut over six feet deep into the ground. Where there was once a pond, there is now only sand. “What am I going to do with it?” Schindler asked rhetorically, overlooking the riverbed he now owns. Schindler’s property on Guichon Avenue is among those in Lower Nicola which bore the brunt of the damages when Guichon Creek breached its banks last month. A pile of rip rap, purchased by Schindler to mitigate the flood damage at a cost of about $4,000, is about the only thing in Schindler’s lawn in the

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS SPORTS BOX

Council says no to pickle ball Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

The sports box at Central Park will remain a multi-use facility, after city council defeated a motion granting the Merritt Pickle Ball Club exclusive use of the facility at a special council meeting held on June 20. Council voted to 5-2 against a recommendation from staff to allow the club to use the outdoor sports box as their permanent home. Merritt Mayor Neil Menard and Coun. Kurt Christopherson voted in favour of the motion. More than 60 people filled council chambers for the meeting, with seven speakers taking to the podium to provide public input — most of which was against allowing the million dollar, multi-use facility to be converted into a single-use arena for a lone user group. Some speakers also said they have attempted to use the sports box only to find it locked. “It’s not used very much, but it is used,” said one speaker. “We can’t exclude those people.” “I’m not against pickle ball — it’s a great game — but [the club] can’t take over [the] use of [the sports box] and exclude everyone else. It’s just wrong.” Nicola Valley Thunder midget team coach Wayne Kaboni said he’s in favour of keeping the facility a multi-use one. “I think the key to community development is making sure that our youth are out of trouble and we’re keeping them active with positive influences — sports is one of the things that are very positive,” said Kaboni. One speaker — who is a member of the Merritt Pickle Ball Club — said he didn’t think converting the multi-use sports box to pickle ball courts was a good idea, but pointed out that such a facility

is needed, suggesting the lawn bowling club at N’Kwala Park be utilized instead given its low usage. The pickle ball club has used the sports box for the past year, and have dedicated play-

ing times at the facility. Club president Brian Dafoe told the Herald last week, however, that the surface has become too dangerous to play on and doesn’t want members to continue playing there in its cur-

rent state. At the June 13 meeting, city council was to vote on whether or not to write a letter of support for a $25,000 federal grant the Merritt Pickle Ball Club was pursuing that would put

some funding towards a $90,000 retrofit of the facility for pickle ball. But in order to apply for the grant, Dafoe told council he needed assurance from them they would make the sports box their exclusive home and allow the renovation — a request the group initially came forward with at a council meeting last month. Dafoe said their proposed renovation would correct issues with the facility such drainage problems, warped boards and cracked concrete.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Shady statistics Ever since the results of B.C.’s provincial election on May 9 came back as a dog’s Cole Wagner breakfast, COLE’S NOTES we’ve heard a tired refrain from NDP leader John Horgan. “A majority of British Columbians voted for change,” proclaimed Horgan, in the confusion of the days immediately following May 9. It’s not that he’s wrong — about 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots for NDP candidates, while around 17 per cent did so for Green Party candidates. Another 2.5 per cent chose to cast their vote in favour of non-Liberal party candidates in their ridings. Of course, in 2013, non-Liberal candidates also garnered a combined 56 per cent of the popular vote — but nobody tried to say that a majority of British Columbians voted for change back then. So maybe Horgan is actually referring to the number of ridings won by non-Liberal candidates — 44 to 43, a majority by literally the narrowest of margins. But the Green Party and the NDP did not contest the election as part of some over-arching coalition party of non-Liberals, so expressing the results of the election in this way is a little disingenuous. For example, one might (and some have) made a similar argument that more than 80 per cent of British Columbians voted for parties in favour of constructing the Trans Mountain pipeline. But here we are. The only numbers that really matter? An Angus Reid poll which indicates that more than 70 per cent of British Columbians are against calling a snap election. So regardless of imaginary coalitions, it’s time for our MLAs to get to work.

Vardkar and Brnabic: politics of sexuality For most Irish people the most striking thing about their new prime minister, Leo Varadkar, is that he is very young. (At 38, he is the country’s youngest leader GWYNNE DYER ever.) It’s mainly The international the foreign press STAGE that goes on about the fact that he is a) half-Indian, and b) gay. Varadkar himself, the son of a doctor from India and a nurse from Ireland who met while working in a hospital in southern England, is definitely not keen on being seen as a symbol of changing public attitudes: “I’m not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician, for that matter. It’s just part of who I am. It doesn’t define me.” No, it doesn’t, but it is still worth focusing on for a moment to think about what it tells us not just about Ireland but about the West as a whole, and even about the world. Homosexuality was legalized in England in 1967, and it was decriminalized in Canada

the following year (when Pierre Trudeau, then the justice minister, told the CBC that “there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.”) It only became legal in Ireland a quarter-century later, in 1993. But two years ago same-sex marriage was made legal in Ireland by a referendum in which 62 per cent of the voters said yes. Well, we already knew that Ireland had changed. It has lots of immigrants now — one in every eight people is foreign-born — and the political power of the Catholic Church has collapsed. So it’s no longer a surprise that an Indo-Irish gay man can become prime minister. But what about Serbia? The only “immigrants” in Serbia are ethnic Serbs who were stranded in other parts of former Yugoslavia after the break-up. The Serbian Orthodox Church is still strong, and it has no truck with degenerate Western ideas about human rights. As one Orthodox monk wrote: “Homosexuality is not a problem in Serbia. There are hardly any gay people, and society wouldn’t permit them to organize or (publicly advocate) their abominations.” Two-thirds of Serbians think that homosexuality is an illness, and almost four-fifths believe that gay people should stay in the closet. But Ana Brnabic is an out and proud

lesbian, and she has just been appointed prime minister of Serbia. She is also of Croatian descent. How has this happened? Brnabic was appointed by Alexandar Vucic, who was prime minister himself until he ascended to the presidency in last month’s election. The prime minister is constitutionally the most powerful person in the government, but Brnabic is a technocrat, not really a politician. It is widely expected that she will concentrate on making the trains run on time, so to speak, and leave the sensitive political decisions to Vucic. The general assumption in Serbian political circles is that Brnabic’s appointment is window-dressing. Serbia wants to join the European Union, and the government would quite like to divert the EU’s attention from a few little image problems: its close ties with Russia, its hostility to refugees, and rampant corruption. So what could be better than a woman prime minister (a Serbian first) who is openly gay (another Serbian first) and even has foreign antecedents (her father was born in Croatia)?

OPINION LETTER

to the editor

Speak up You can comment on any story you read @ merrittherald.com

Article understates the damage in Lower Nicola Editor; Reading the article concerning the flood by Cole Wagner (Co-operation keeps Mamit Lake dam strong, Merritt Herald, June 15, 2017), I would like to comment on some misinformation. I would like to quote two statements that are false in his article: “the trickle of water could have rapidly increased to a torrential flow that might have threatened homes and property for residents in Lower Nicola.” This so called torrential flow came through Lower Nicola destroying infrastructure, property, bridges, roads and personal possession for five days. Wells were compromised, gas, power and water were gone in many areas in the lower Guichon Creek area. The article insinuates this torrential flow never happened. The second quote in the article is from Greg Brouwer of Highland Valley Copper. He stated that along with LNIB “that the safety of communities and residents was maintained during this extraordinary event.” This did not happen for all residents. If Cole Wagner wanted to obtain the true record of events he could contact the Red Cross, TNRD or disaster assistance for information. There was information from local residents at the beginning of this flood as to how the water might be controlled but their suggestions were ignored or considered as “too dangerous.” The real truth is that LNIB property, private property, buildings, expensive personal items, landscaped land and vegetation, etc. have been taken away and covered with sand, rock and debris or destroyed. On top of all this, there is financial loss in property values in the flood area. It is possible that this flood could have been averted by proper management of the dam and water at Mamit Lake at early runoff. We will never know and no one will ever be held accountable.

On July 1, 2017, Canada will celebrate its sesquicentennial — or 150th — annivesary. One-hundredand-fifty years worth of history is a lot to remember — so each week in 2017, the Herald will run this special section to remind you of the remarkable accomplishments, important historical figures, and maybe even a few fun facts you might not have known about our country. On this day in 1960...

Progress made slowly From Page 6 Why, the Serbs are even more enlightened than the Irish! We should make them full members of the EU as soon as possible! That may well be the plan — and if it is, so what? The European Union knows that there was a considerable amount of calculation behind Brnabic’s appointment, but it will not condemn President Alexandar Vucic for trying to make Serbia look like a suitable candidate for EU membership. Lots of ordinary Serbs will be shocked by this assault on “Serbian values,” but many of them will understand that it serves the national interest. And little by little, just because

Brnabic is the prime minister, they will grow less uncomfortable with the notion of gays — and indeed just women in general — having a legitimate role in public life. This is how change really happens: not sudden enlightenment, but a gradual acceptance of new rules and values. And the most encouraging take-away from this little story is that even a man like Vucic, once an ally of the murderous demagogue Slobodan Milosevic, understands the new political and social rules of the West. They are not yet the new rules everywhere. Eastern Europe is way behind Western Europe, North America and Latin America, largely because it spent between forty and

seventy years isolated from the rest of the world under Communist rule. The struggle is still intense in parts of Asia, and it has scarcely begun in most of Africa and the Muslim world. Gay rights, feminism, human rights in general are not really “Western” values: a hundred years ago the West was just as intolerant of difference as everybody else. The change has come to the West earlier mainly because it is richer, but we are all traveling on the same train, and the other end will pull into the station just a little bit later. THE HERALD WANTS TO KNOW

Stamp issued by Canada Post in 1998 featuring the image of the late Jean Lesage, former Premier of Quebec. Photo courtesy of Library and Archives Canada

Lawyer and politician Jean Lesage is elected Premier of Quebec. His Liberals defeat the socially conservative Union Nationale government, which had been in power for the previous 16 years. Lesage is known as the father of the Quiet Revolution. This period of change will give rise to a less traditional, more urban and more modern Quebec society. The Quiet Revolution continued in Quebec until 1976, with the election of a pro-seperatist provincial government. Between 1960 and 76, consecutive Liberal governments will contribute to the secularization of the province, pulling influence away from the historically powerful Catholic Church. Before becoming premier, Lesage was a federal Member of Parliament and in Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent’s Cabinet. Lesage would serve as Premier of Quebec until June 16, 1966. NICOLA VALLEY NEWS CITY COUNCIL

First step forward for new fire hall Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

The fire department is looking to get approval for a pair of variances needed in order for an expansion of the Merritt fire hall to move forward. At its regular meeting on June 13, city council unanimously approved advancing a variance permit application submitted by fire chief Dave Tomkinson. A decision on the application will be made at the July 11 meeting. The vote passed 6-0 as Coun. Dave Baker was not in attendance. The current fire hall sits on a little more than 6,100 square feet of land at the corner of Nicola Avenue and Cleasby Street. A two-storey addition, planned as part of a multi-phase upgrade of the fire hall, would add 5,216 square feet to the property. After the renovation, the combined area of the facility will be 11,342 square feet of a 33,987 square foot lot, a report to council stated. However, the lot is zoned as P3, which carries restrictions as to how much of a lot can be cov-

ered with a building. The phase two expansion would lead to too much of the lot being covered — which prompted the need for the variance permit. The expansion is to be located about three metres from the property boundary abutting Cleasby Street, but the P3 zoning requires a 4.5 metre setback, meaning a variance will be needed for that as well. “We don’t want to change the design of the building or anything like that even for the future as there’s more dollars involved in doing that as well. These are some variances that we don’t think affect the neighbours qual-

ity of life or sight lines,” said Tomkinson. He said these changes will allow them to efficiently place the phase two addition on the existing property. “That was the long-term goal. As opposed to looking for another property or a second property, [we’re] trying to make it work on this property that we’ve been on for 40 years,” said Tomkinson. The project is included in the 2017 budget and construction would begin in 2018. The city is expected to launch an alternative approval process in the fall to get the go-ahead from citizens to borrow funds for the project.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS COURT FILES

Shotgun sale ends in jail Cam Fortems KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled a three-year jail term is a fit sentence for a Merritt man who pleaded guilty to selling a stolen shotgun to who he believed was his drug dealer for $80 and a small amount of crack. Rodney Boesel pleaded guilty last year to trafficking a weapon in connection to the incident that occurred on May 1, 2014, when he stumbled across a gun and immediately sold it to a person who turned out to be an undercover Mountie. His defence lawyer, Genevieve Eliany argued the mandatory minimum three years

in jail is too high for Boesel’s actions. The penalty was brought in by the former federal Conservative government. That minimum sentence has already been found unconstitutional in several provinces. But Justice Hope Hyslop wrote in her decision that she does not have to consider the constitutionality of the three-year minimum because that jail term is appropriate for Boesel’s offence. “There was no thought to selling it to anyone else as, for that matter, turning the guns into police . . .,” Hyslop wrote. “Mr. Boesel would know what would happen to a ‘hot gun.’ It would have its serial numbers

removed and it might be sawed off. He would know that it would have no other use to a drug dealer than to threaten, maim or even kill people.” Eliany argued Boesel had lifelong problems with drug addiction and the sale made over the phone to what he believed was his drug dealer was

not thought out. Boesel is a drug addict on a methadone program who has a criminal record for a string of break-andenter thefts in 2008. He has no record of violence. After the sale, Boesel told police: “It must seem stupid, but I really didn’t think about it.’”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS LOGAN LAKE

Unlikely pen pals meet

Ian and Pat Marshall pose with their paper pen pal, nine-year-old Evan Dallaire. Cole Wagner/Herald Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Nine-year-old Evan Dallaire, a student in the Grade 3/4 split class at Logan Lake Elementary, made a new friend this year — albeit one who is a couple years older than him. Evan didn’t meet Pat Marshall in his class, nor did he make her acquaintance on the playground during recess. Instead, Evan got to know Pat Marshall and her husband Ian in a way that not many kids these days are familiar with — by becoming pen pals. And on June 15, Evan and his pen pal Pat got the chance to meet each other for the first time. Dallaire’s class was part of the pilot version of the PaperPal project in Logan Lake. PaperPals aims to pair up kids with seniors living in the community, who then get to know one-another through a correspondence of handwritten letters. The PaperPal program was developed by Domtar, one of the world’s largest paper companies, and brought into the community through a partnership between the Better at Home program and Logan Lake Literacy, explained Melanie Michalewicz, coordinator of the Better at Home program. Since starting the Better at Home program in 2013, which aims to keep seniors living in the comforts of their own home by providing extra nonmedical resources to the elderly, Michalewicz has been especially focused on expanding what she called “inter-generational connections.” “I’ve always been looking for new and different ways to connect youth and seniors in the community, so I took the

lead on this as it came by,” said Michalewicz. More than 20 kids in the Grade 3/4 class at Logan Lake Elementary were matched up with seniors in January. The kids and seniors — who had never met each other — exchanged about three or four letters per month in the lead up to Thursday’s barbecue. Evan Dallaire and Pat Marshall were just one of the many pairs meeting for the first time on June 15. “It was great, it was really nice. He said, ‘I can’t wait to meet you at the barbecue!’ And then he said, ‘now I’m so nervous…’ and his hands were shaking,” said Marshall of the pen pals’ inaugural face-to-face. But if Evan was nervous at first about being introduced to Pat, his shyness quickly faded throughout the afternoon. Midway through my conversation with Pat and Ian, Evan bounded up to the pair to make sure they were watching while he mounted an effort to blow a few big soapy bubbles. His favourite part of the exercise in letter writing? The process of getting to know Pat, and the freedom to ask lots of questions, he told me. “Just questions and answers!” he said with a smile, before taking off to play with the bubbles again. “He’s funny — he talks like he writes. And his writing is very messy, but he drew pictures and the pictures were fantastic. There would be a man or a woman there — and all of a sudden, a space alien! And he talks about everything: technology, whatever. He wanted to know how old I was, if I had any kids, if I had any plans for the summer or for spring break,” explained Pat.

Should the program return, she’ll be a part of it again, said Marshall. “If they give me a new child next year, that will be great. But I’ll still write to Evan next year,“ she said. The PaperPal’s website promotes the program as carrying psychological benefits for the seniors who participate, and better learning outcomes for kids who are engaged in the somewhat antiquated act of handwriting a letter. “We’re interested in early learning literacy. Even letter writing is just going out of style. So it’s a skill that’s being lost that we want to bring back,” said Serena Hazel, outreach co-ordinator with Logan Lake Literacy. “We want them to write because that’s an essential skill. When you learn to write, you learn to read at the same time.” And while the program carries a valuable education proponent for kids, Michalewicz said she sees the benefit the program brings to seniors as well. “A lot of these folks, living in a rural area, can’t get to family or don’t get to see their own grandchildren. Doing a program like this, even for seniors who can get out of the home on a regular basis, they can do something like this and feel a part of the community, and feel a part of something more,” she said. The program wasn’t without a few learning curves for the seniors however. Hazel noted that more than a couple seniors had to rewrite their letters after learning that kids are no longer taught to decipher cursive writing. And even when their printing was legible, some seniors said

Mine issued court order Reunion scheduled Cam Fortems KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

The Ministry of Energy and Mines has ordered Highland Valley Copper to craft a solution to vibration in its heavy trucks and equipment within 60 days after finding an increasing trend of workers reporting back injuries. The report also found vibration levels exceed guidelines in some instances. The ministry investigation was prompted after repeated complaints by United Steelworkers that its members were suffering chronic back injuries from prolonged exposure to bouncing and vibration on haul roads. Kyle Wolff, president of Local 7619, said the investigation and report came after inaction by Highland Valley Copper (HVC).

“They’ve got 60 days to address the problem,” he said. “We’ve been dealing with this for two-and-a-half years.” The ministry investigation found “it is apparent that duration of vibration and sustained and potentially awkward postures are present during the task of haul truck driving.” The report noted vibration

above safe levels can lead to abdominal and chest pain, nausea, loss of balance and spinal disc degeneration. Test were randomly conducted on six trucks. The most severe movements were vertically from bouncing of the truck on haul roads.

Program could return From Page 13 their inquisitive pen pals were not shy about asking some odd questions. “I got a charge out of the first letter he wrote to her,” said Jim Turner, recalling the first correspondence his wife Rita received from their pen pal. “He says: ‘Can you do a back flip?’” “I’m 83-years-old, I don’t think so,” replied Rita with a laugh. And if there was any doubt to the sincerity of the connections made through a mandated letter-writing program between kids and seniors, just ask Sylvia Perrault and husband Dean what they thought of PaperPals. “Such a good idea. We drove home from Abbotsford just for this today,” she said. And there was widespread support for the program to come back — with one caveat from the group of seniors, who seem to have become attached to their pen pals after only a few months. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we got the same kids?”

Recognize anyone? Participants of an exchange program in 1980 are returning to Merritt this year for a reunion of sorts. Photo courtesy of Jill Holmes/Merritt Herald archives Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

The participants of the Canada World Youth (CWY) program in 1980 — who spent four months living and working in Merritt during the winter months of the year — are coming back to town. Participants of the 1980 CWY program came from all over Canada and India, and for the most part were all in their early 20s when they arrived in the Nicola Valley. With some of the Indian participants of the program visiting Vancouver this summer, the group has arranged for a reunion to take place in Merritt on July 3. Any locals who remembers the group’s time in town is invited to come out and say hello. Jill Holmes, the former group leader for the CWY program that came to the Nicola Valley, contacted the Herald to let us know about the upcoming visit.

PIPELINE PROTECTION. IT’S WHAT WE DO.

She also attached the photo of the group featured above — which ran in an undetermined edition of the Merritt Herald in 1980. The CWY participants stayed with host families during their time in Merritt, and although some of those families have since moved, Holmes said she knows at least a few families are still in the region. “If [people] want, they can come out and say hello and see if they can meet their people they used to know,” said Holmes. While the group was in the region, they worked various jobs around town, including on the Coldwater Reserve and at a sawmill — though Holmes couldn’t remember specifically which mill. “Some were on the Nicola Ranch — some were at a school,” said Holmes. “Some of them were roofing — and that was in the winter.” The reunion is set for about 3 p.m. at Lions Memorial Park. Report finds workers suffered From Page 6 “To summarize, from 2015 to 2017 over a 28-month period, HVC haul truck operators reported a total of 31 cases of back pain to first-aid and there were a total of 46 back pain reports to first aid for equipment operators in mine operations,” the report stated. “These results may suggest a trend on site and warrants further exploration . . .” Contacted on June 13, mine spokesman Peter Martell said it is “early in the process.”

He otherwise declined to answer questions. A statement from the HVC said it has received the report and will review it. “Our goal is to work with the Ministry of Energy and Mines and our Union to fully understand the findings and identify what potential measures may be required to address them. At Highland Valley Copper, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our employees. We take all health and safety issues very seriously and we are committed to continuing to strengthen our safety measures.” Wolff accused the company of blam-

ing drivers’ back problems on pre-existing injuries until the ministry forced its hand. “Every one of those injuries were preventable,” Wolff said. “The union was trying to seek an investigation and get the company to believe us when people were getting injured.” The ministry used European Union guidelines because none exist in Canada. Operators sit for up to 10 hours a day in trucks and shovels.

JUNIOR HOCKEY

Stead named best Junior A goalie in Canada Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The 2016-17 hockey season is one netminder Kristian Stead is never going to forget. Back in March, the 20-year-old Merritt minor hockey product was chosen the Most Valuable Player and playoff MVP for his Nipawin Hawks team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Stead led the Hawks to a regular-season record of 40-15-2-1 and a first-place tie in the SJHL’s Sherwood Division (with the Flin Flon Bombers), and a 7-4 record in the playoffs (good for third place overall behind Flin Flon and the champion Battleford North Stars). A few week’s later, Stead was named the Most Valuable Player and Top Goaltender for the entire SJHL. His regular-season stats included a league-leading 29 wins and 0.936 save-percentage, and an impressive 1.97 goals-against-average. He recorded seven shutouts in his 42 starts, including three in a row on January 25, 29 and February 3. In April, Stead accepted a prestigious NCAA Division 1 scholarship to attend the University of AlaskaAnchorage. He will begin playing for the Seawolves in September of this year. Stead’s crowning achievement in this season-to-remember came last month when he was selected the top Junior A goalie in Canada for 2016-17. The announcement was made by the Canadian Junior Hockey League during the Royal Bank Cup national championships in Cobourg, Ont. on May 17. Stead beat out five other outstanding nominees from the nine Junior A leagues in Canada. “It’s all been pretty

Two excellent seasons with the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has resulted in Merritt’s Kristian Stead being named the top Junior A goalie in Canada. Stead played all his minor hockey in Merritt before spending two seasons with the 100 Mile Wranglers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League prior to joining the Hawks. surreal,” said Stead, who is home in Merritt for the summer. “It’s been a pretty exciting year, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity I had in Nipawin, and the way things panned out. It couldn’t have gone any better.” Stead was quick to thank others for his accomplishments. “The success I had was generated by the people I surrounded myself with,” he said. “It was a great group back in Nipawin, from the coaches to the players and the fans. And of course, there’s my parents and family. They’re sort of the backbone of it all.” As has become the norm in this day and age, Stead learned about his national award via social media.

“I knew that I had been nominated, and that alone was pretty exciting, but I definitely wasn’t anticipating winning the final award. I was sitting at work, and a friend texted me — telling me that I had won. I guess the CJHL announced it on Twitter.” Stead played all of his minor hockey in Merritt. He was also a star lacrosse player. In his final season of midget, Stead elected to join the 100 Mile House Wranglers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. He would play two full seasons for the Junior B club. Both seasons, Stead was an AP (affiliate player) with the Merritt Centennials and actually made two starts with his hometown club.

When the chance to play Junior A in Nipawin presented itself, Stead didn’t hesitate. “Looking back, I have no regrets about heading out to Saskatchewan,” he said. “An opportunity presented itself. I thought it was a good fit for me, so I jumped all over it.” It would be safe to say, Stead never looked back. He very quickly took over the starter’s role for the Hawks, and appeared in a total of 113 regular-season and playoff games for the club over the next two seasons. His outstanding performances night-in and night-out caught the attention of scouts from NCAA schools, and in particular AlaskaAnchorage. “Each year, at the beginning of the season, they have an SJHL

Showcase, and a lot of coaches and scouts are there,” explained Stead. “After one of our games at this season’s showcase, I spoke with Seawolves assistant coach Chris Kamal. He said that he had enjoyed my play in the game he watched, and that they would be keeping an eye on me throughout the season.” Stead would meet twice more with Seawolves’ personnel during the year. “Then they phoned me up and said they’d like to offer me a scholarship. I took a couple of days to think about it. It was definitely a big decision, so I gave it lots of thought. When I got back to them, I said I’d be pleased to come and play for [the Seawolves] next season.” Stead was fortunate

that one of the current members of the AlaskaAnchorage team is a former Nipawin player. “Tad Kozun is a buddy of mine, and I trained with him one summer,” said Stead. “He was a great source. Any questions I had, I could run by him. He was a huge help to me in making my decision.” Matt Thomas, the Seawolves head coach, is looking forward to having Stead on his roster. “Kristian will be a big addition to our team,” Thomas said. “He proved himself as a junior player with the accolades he received. More importantly, we feel he can provide us with depth next year and challenge to be our starter. We have very high hopes for him as he enters our

program this fall. “Kristian is obviously a talented goaltender, but more importantly he has the commitment and character that will strengthen our team and push us to new heights” said Thomas. That competitiveness will serve him well as a Division 1 goalie.” The Seawolves’ line-up going into the 2017-18 NCAA season includes just one returning netminder — senior Olivier Mantha, who played one season for the Penticton Vees (2013-14) prior to heading to university. Stead is excited about the challenges that lie ahead. “Like any goalie, you want to get your foot in the door. You want the opportunity to play, and when you get it, to play well. I’m looking forward to learning from Olivier, and pushing him. You always want to build a good relationship with your goalie partner, but at the end of the day, you want to be the guy that’s getting the call in net.” Alaska-Anchorage plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association of the NCAA, and has a farflung travel schedule that includes Michigan Tech, Bowling Green (Ohio), and Alabama-Huntsville. Stead is working for the City of Merritt’s maintenance department this summer. When he’s not on the job, he can be found working out at the gym. “I’m doing everything I can to prepare for the season,” he said. “I’ll definitely be working with my goalie coach (Jamie McCaig). He’s a great guy on and off the ice. I’ll be skating whenever I have a chance in Kelowna, in Williams Lake, and maybe a bit on the Island. “I’m definitely excited about everything that lies ahead, and can’t wait to get started.”

Thunder peewees headed to provincials

CLUB VOLLEYBALL

Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The Nicola Valley Thunder peewee lacrosse team closed out a perfect 12-0 regular season with three road wins in a span of just over 24 hours on the weekend. On Saturday, a four-goal effort from Lucas Schmid paced the Thunder to a 12-1 victory over Penticton. Other marksmen were Ostyn Fox and Carter Shackelly (with two goals apiece), Simon and Keagan McGifford, Rylan Falcone and Jalen McRae. Sunday’s doubleheader began with an 10-1 Thunder win against North Okanagan in Armstrong and wrapped up with 10-3 decision over Shuswap in Salmon Arm in the afternoon. Nicola Valley goal-scorers in the Sunday twin bill were Schmid (7), Keagan McGifford (4), Carter Shackelly (2), Gavin Shackelly, Simon McGifford, Falcone, Fox, McRae and Gregory Miller. Tyson Jarvis was the winning netminder in all three Nicola Valley victories on the weekend, allowing just five goals in 180 minutes of action. The Thunder peewees went into the weekend brimming with confidence following a thrilling win at a “Rock The House” tournament in Armstrong and Enderby two weeks earlier. The Thunder defeated the host

Legends 6-5 in the championship game, played on June 3. Schmid scored five of his team’s six goals in the gold-medal match, including the eventual game winner with just under 10 minutes remaining in the third period. Carter Shackelly scored the other Thunder goal. Nicola Valley made it to the championship game by going undefeated in round robin play. The Thunder beat Kamloops 11-3, North Okanagan 6-2 and Shuswap 7-4. In one of two semi-finals, the Thunder met up with North Okanagan again, and defeated them 6-2. Heart and hustle winners for the Nicola Valley at the ‘Rock The House” tournament were Miller, Falcone, Kolton Wekking, Matthew Morrissey and Austyn

Streek. Game MVP honours at the tournament went to Jarvis, Fox, Schmid, McRae and Carter Shackelly. By virtue of their unblemished record in the regular season, the Thunder peewees, who are coached by Peter Schmid, have guaranteed themselves a spot at the provincial championships, slated for Fort St. John from July 6 to 9. In other Thunder lacrosse action in recent weeks, the novices lost all three of their games on the May 27 and 28 weekend — falling to Penticton 10-4, and to North Okanagan by scores of 12-1 and 12-2. Nicola Valley scoring stats were not available. On June 8, the Thunder tykes fell 5-2 to Penticton. Scoring for the Nicola Valley side were Wyatt Streek and Cooper Hatfield.

Three members of the Merritt Secondary School junior girls’ volleyball team last year were in Alberta from May 20 to 22 competing at the the Canadian U16 women’s club volleyball championships at the Olympic Oval on the campus of the University of Calgary. The three (above, left to right) — Emily Whitecross, Logan Moorhead and Haley Zabek — are all members of the Kamloops Volleyball Association’s Team Charmaine (named after their coach). The squad played hot and cold at the national championships, losing their three matches on Saturday, then winning three in a row on Sunday. In Monday’s elimination round, Team Charmaine split their first two games with a higher-ranked Alberta side before losing the deciding third and final game. Whitecross plays primarily in the middle position, Zabek plays offside hitter and middle, and Moorhead does some setting as well as plays offside. The club volleyball season generally runs from January to late May. Photo contributed by Stef Zabek

SPORTS JUNIOR HOCKEY

Good news from Cents’ AGM

Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The Merritt Centennials’ held their annual general meeting on June 14 in the mezzanine of the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. Perhaps the biggest and best news that emanated from the AGM was that for the first time in a while the Cents’ organization is solidly in the black — to the tune of just over $174,000. By comparison, one year ago, the communityrun club showed a net loss of approximately $11,000 for the fiscal year. The huge financial turnaround for the BCHL’s longest continuously-run franchise can be largely attributed to three substantial revenue streams. First and foremost was an insertion of $272,550 by Aspen Planers as part of their log salvage agreement with the Ministry of Forests. This income source has existed in the past; the last ‘pay-out,’ so to speak, was in 2016 but was only $60,000. A second source of revenue, that wasn’t on the books one year ago, was a $50,000 ‘good faith’ donation by an undisclosed Vancouver law firm that is very supportive of Junior A hockey. Centennials’ club president Neil Menard stated at the AGM that the donation came with absolutely ‘no strings attached.’ Finally, a little more than $24,000 in revenue was taken in from the seven home playoff games the Centennials enjoyed this past season. The year before, the team had failed to make the playoffs. “Our 2016-17 ended on a high note,” said Menard in his opening remarks at the AGM. “That last playoff series (an epic seven-gamer versus the Penticton Vees) was awesome. The players and the coaching staff did an excellent job. It was really great to see the old barn filled to the rafters.” Brian Barrett, long-

time Centennials’ director of hockey operations, shared Menard’s sentiments in his recap of the past season. “It was very evident down the stretch and into the playoffs that we were a team to be reckoned with,” said Barrett. Barrett, who is also the Cents’ representative on the BCHL’s board of governors, went on to state that the biggest challenge that every team in the league faces is the ability to operate financially. “We want and need to get the community involved more than ever before,” he said. Barrett also brought the audience at the AGM up to date on news from the recentlyheld league meetings. He confirmed the move of the Wenatchee Wild franchise to the BCHL’s Interior division, and spoke of several initiatives the league is undertaking for the first time — a new marketing strategy aimed at filling arenas called The Ultimate Tool Kit, a new concussion protocol that includes the app Head Check Health, and a new exposure camp in July at the Richmond Oval that is expected to attract some of the best, young junior talent from across North America, along with a host of coaches and scouts from colleges, universities and the NHL. “We hope this is going to be the best year ever,” said Barrett in reference to the upcoming Cents’ 2017-18 season. Also reporting to the AGM was Centennials Booster Club president Betty Doberstein. She was pleased to announce

that the hard-working organization raised close to $40,000 for the hockey club this past season. She reminded everyone that three-quarters of the Booster Club’s membership is over 75 years of age, and new members are greatly needed. Cents’ marketing representative Liz Brackenreed spoke at length about ticketing — in the past and for the future. She stated that new strategies are being explored and implemented to try and attract more paying customers. Cents’ vice-president Dave McCauley spoke briefly, thanking the Merritt Fire Rescue WEP program members for all their volunteer hours at Centennials’ games as first-aid personnel. The final report at the annual general meeting came from Centennials’ head coach and general manager Joe Martin. He chose not to dwell on the successes of last year, but rather to look ahead to the future. Martin stated that close to 170 players attended the Cents’ two spring camps in Merritt and Abbotsford, and that the hockey club has signed three new players so far (see next week’s Herald) and are currently courting another half a dozen. “They’re all good kids, from really good families.” The head coach said the Abbotsford camp included a bit of a Hot Stove session, with NHL scouts Bobby Vermette (Arizona Coyotes) and Bob Dirk (New Jersey Devils) in attendance.

“That was a bit of added value to our camp, and I think the players and their families really appreciated it.” Martin stated that several current Centennials players are in discussions with teams in the United States Hockey League, and that this ‘competition for talent’ between the two leagues is going to only get more intense in the future. “It’s a double-edged sword” the coach said. “It’s nice to see the recognition for our players, but it’s hard to see one or more of them not being here come September.” Martin reported that at the league coaches’ meeting there was discussion of implementing a hybrid icing rule for the coming season, as well as going straight to three-on-three overtime play in the event of a tied game after 60 minutes of play. The requisite election of officers took place at the Centennials’ AGM, with three of four executive positions filled by the incumbents. Menard and McCauley are back as president and vicepresident of the club respectively, while Beth Nadeau is returning as treasurer. The one new member of the executive is secretary Carol Moffatt. The Cents’ board of directors also saw a considerable number of returnees: Barrett, Doberstein, Jessica and Rich Culbertson, Sandy Hostrawser, Steve Rose and Frank Etchart. The lone new director is Peter Schmid. Departing secretary Heather Fader and director Rita Cavaliere, both of whom chose not to let their names stand, were thanked for all their hard work and years of service to the club. Cavaliere, a teacher at Merritt Secondary School, will continue to be the education coordinator for the team. In closing, Menard stated: “Here’s hoping 2017-18 is the season where we go all the way.”

A girls’ youth softball team from Sorrento was in Merritt on June 17 to play a pair of exhibition games against local sides.
