PUBLIC ACCESS
Evidence may prompt return to court Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD
Just when it looked like a 30-year saga between the Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club and Douglas Lake Cattle Company was coming to an end, new evidence discovered by two members of the club could see the two sides returning to court. The Douglas Lake Cattle Company is suing the fish and game club, seeking restitution for damages resulting from fish and game club members trespassing on ranch property. Through a counter-claim, the club is seeking an order which would declare access roads leading to Minnie and Stoney lakes as public roads. Such an order would also declare that the fish and fishery they access are public as well. In-court proceedings wrapped up at the end of January, but a ruling was delayed so that Justice Joel Groves could take a tour of the lands in question. On May 23, lawyers for both the fish and game club and the Douglas Lake Cattle Company accompanied the judge on the tour. During the tour there was no formal calling of evidence permitted while Douglas Lake Cattle Company general manager Joe Gardner

led the procession of trucks through lands owned by the ranch. “In the course of the view, the party was taken to the east end of Stoney Lake and shown what Joe Gardner described as the only inlet stream to Stoney Lake — it was just a trickle of water,” said Christopher Harvey, lawyer for the fish and game club. “It raised the question of why the water flowing in the outlet stream was so much greater than the water we’d been shown coming into the lake.” With both the judge’s and the ranch’s blessing, Rick McGowan and Ed Hendricks returned to Stoney Lake on May 25, accompanied once again
by Gardner. “They walked around the area east of Stoney Lake and found the two streams that were marked on a lot of the maps of the area, and they were not insignificant streams,” said Harvey, adding that in the club’s view, this new evidence calls into question the validity of what was stated during the original tour of the ranch on May 23. Evan Cooke, lawyer for the Douglas Lake Cattle Company, used the words “bodies of water,” and “puddles” to describe the waterways, and disputed whether their existence was worth reopening the case. “Certainly the fishing club has a view about
certain water deposits or ponds that are located south and east of Stoney Lake they think they are relevant,” he said. “I think the ranch would argue that they are well aware that these bodies of water are there — I don’t know how long they’ve been there, but they’ve certainly been there at all relevant times. They are not new information… It’s not that these are newly discovered bodies of water, we just don’t think they are relevant to the analysis in this case.” The Douglas Lake Cattle Company rejected an appeal from the fish and game club to agree to allow photos of the waterways to be entered into evidence, forcing the club to file an
appeal to Justice Groves to allow the lawsuit to be reopened, said Harvey. When that appeal is filed, the Douglas Lake Cattle Company will have a chance to review the information and decide whether the company will submit arguments against including the new evidence. Both Minnie and Stoney Lake are surrounded by property owned by Douglas Lake Cattle Company, with public access to the lakes restricted by a locked gate installed by the ranch on Stoney Lake Road. The ranch, through manager Joe Gardner, claims it has created a world-class fishery on Minnie and Stoney lakes through engineering and raising of what were barren waters in the 2000s. “Douglas Lake was portraying that Stoney Lake was a dry pond, and they created it. But we knew there were two natural watercourses going into it,” said McGowan. No date has been set for the judge to hear the appeal from the fish and game club, but lawyers from both parties guessed that the date would fall sometime between July and the upcoming fall. -With files from Kamloops This Week

Drama set for the legislature today Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS
The plan to defeat the BC Liberal’s minority government could enter it’s final stage today with a confidence vote in the B.C. legislature. As a new session
of the B.C. legislature began Monday, BC Liberal house leader Mike de Jong and Premier Christy Clark said they expect to lose the vote on the BC Liberals’ post-election throne speech, which contained sweeping new
promises taken from opposition election platforms. That vote is now expected at the end of the sitting day on Thursday. The BC Liberal government presented its own legislation to ban corporate and union donations
Monday, but it was immediately voted down by the BC NDP and Greens. Another bill, which would have extended official party status to the three BC Green MLAs, was also voted down, sight unseen, by the combined
opposition parties. NDP leader John Horgan and BC Green leader Andrew Weaver have said Premier Christy Clark’s newly adopted positions on raising income assistance rates, banning bridge tolls and other
recent reversals have strengthened their resolve to defeat the BC Liberals. “If the opposition were concerned that this is some sort of delay tactic, it is not,” he said. “The confidence vote will take place on Thursday.”

Throwing your billions around The good news is it doesn’t matter much which party you vote for in the next B.C. elec- TOM FLETCHER tion, which B.C. may arrive VIEWS sooner than you think. They all want to spend billions more of your money, so really, the pressure’s off. After presenting a throne speech with a couple of dozen big spending items lifted from the NDP platform, Premier Christy Clark was as upbeat as ever. She’s keen to have her government hang on long enough to present the public accounts, the audited financial statements for the fiscal year that ended this spring. Economic growth was “a full point” higher than private sector forecasts used by the finance ministry, Clark disclosed at a news conference in the legislature rose garden. This revenue windfall is mostly from urban incomes, sales taxes and Bill Vander Zalm’s gift that won’t stop giving, the property transfer tax, now with the foreign buyer luxury tax on top. Clark assured us the audited books will show there’s a “structural surplus,” the opposite of the dreaded structural deficit. And it’s enough for a $1-billion expansion of subsidized child care, more hip and knee surgeries, and rail transit, not just to Maple Ridge and Langley but Victoria and even Squamish. And no more of those awful road tolls that the B.C. Liberals insisted all through the election campaign were vital to maintaining our AAA credit rating. During that campaign the B.C. Liberals warned Interior and Island folks that the NDP is going to make them help pay off the Port Mann

Venezuela: hand grenades from helicopters After almost three months of daily antigovernment demonstrations, what Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro needed most was an excuse GWYNNE DYER to impose martial The international law, or at least to use STAGE major violence and mass arrests to close the protests down. On Tuesday, Maduro got his excuse. A stolen police helicopter flew over the Supreme Court building in Caracas — and dropped a couple of hand grenades near it. As “terrorist” incidents go, it was so incompetent and downright silly that you begin to suspect that it wasn’t a “false flag” operation sponsored by the government after all. If Maduro’s people were aiming to give themselves an excuse for a crack-down, surely they would have come up with something more impressive than a guy in a helicopter dropping a couple of hand-grenades at random onto the Supreme Court lawn. The man behind this attack was Oscar Perez, a police officer who announced in

a video posted on Instagram that he was launching an armed struggle against tyranny. “We are a coalition of military employees, policemen and civilians who are looking for balance and are against this criminal government,” Pérez said, and the four armed men standing behind him in the video tried to look fierce. The ski-masks helped a bit, but it was hard not to giggle. They really didn’t look very dangerous. But you have to work with the material at hand, and President Maduro did his best to inflate the incident into a major terrorist attack. “I have activated the entire armed forces to defend the peace,” he said. “Sooner or later, we are going to capture that helicopter and those who carried out this terror attack.” (And while we’re at it, we’ll round up a lot of other people who support the opposition.) Maduro can no longer stay in power by democratic means. There is no doubt that he won the presidency by a narrow but genuine majority (1.5 percent) in the 2013 election that followed the death of Hugo Chavez, the hero-founder of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. But there is also no doubt that the opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable, won a landslide victory in the parliamentary election of 2015.

What made the difference between those two elections was the price of oil. In 2013 it was around $100 per barrel. By 2015 it was in the low $40s, and it is still there today. Venezuela is not a rich country, although most Venezuelans believe it is. It has a lot of oil, but it produces almost nothing else and imports practically everything it consumes. So it is rich when oil is at $100 — but it is very poor when it is below $50. The country is therefore now broke. For reasons having nothing to do with alleged plots by the U.S. or the wicked local elites, per capita income in Venezuela has fallen by more than half in the past two years. So people are angry, including many of the poor people who benefitted from Chavez’s generosity with the oil revenues back in the Good Old Days. There is a presidential election due next year, and as things stand now Maduro would probably lose by two-to-one. The National Assembly has had a twothirds majority of opposition members since the 2015 election, and it has been pressing hard to bring the presidential election forward to this year. Maduro had to stop that, and his first step was to have the Supreme

Merritt fortunate to have diverse arts scene Editor; To the arts council, performers, organizers, volunteers and music or arts lovers of Merritt, I wanted to thank you for the wonderful response from the community with our art show Poetic Landscapes. We had an engaging workshop and enjoyed our time with you all immensely. I was also fortunate to take in Strings Plus, a delightful selection of classical music in early June at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Merritt is fortunate to have such entertainment. Country and blues got everyone moving, and it was especially nice to hear the nuances of voice and instruments in such an intimate setting. Well done, everyone. I hope this wonderful spark starts a flame for these cultural events.
COUNCIL HAS SECOND THOUGHTS On July 1, 2017, Canada will celebrate its sesquicentennial — or 150th — annivesary. One-hundredand-fifty years worth of history is a lot to remember — so each week in 2017, the Herald will run this special section to remind you of the remarkable accomplishments, important historical figures, and maybe even a few fun facts you might not have known about our country. On this day in 1989…

Throne speech makes BC NDP look responsible From Page 6 bridge and highway expansion, subsidizing the prosperous southwest while rural B.C. communities struggle for resource jobs. They’d list the big projects that were built without tolls, a new Kelowna bridge and so on. They didn’t mention the Coquihalla,
but those of us who paid that $10 toll for 20 years haven’t forgotten. NDP leader John Horgan sounds like the fiscally prudent one these days. A $10 daycare spot for every tot will take a decade to build and staff. Welfare rates can be increased by only $100 a month, such a modest sum that even the B.C. Liberals
now approve. While Horgan talks about the challenge in his home school district to find 300 more teachers for this fall, Green leader Andrew Weaver continues to boast he’s found $4 billion more for education. Of course he’s got to collapse the two biggest construction projects in Western Canada
first, assuming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau doesn’t send in soldiers, sorry, peacekeepers, to facilitate construction of his chosen oil pipeline. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Email: tfletcher@blackpress.ca Twitter: @tomfletcherbc
Protesters shot, killed From Page 6 Court, which is packed with Chavez and Maduro appointees, strip the National Assembly of all its powers and take them for itself. This is what triggered the daily anti-government demonstrations that began in early April. The Supreme Court’s action was clearly unconstitutional, and after three days that also saw protests from members of his own party Maduro ordered the judges to backtrack on their decree. But the protesters, with the bit between their teeth, stayed out in the street. Despite 70 dead in the past three months, they are still there today.
So Maduro, desperate to sideline the National Assembly, then came up with the idea of rewriting the constitution. There was no referendum to test popular support for this idea, and the people in the “constituent assembly” are being chosen according to rules set by the Maduro government. The new constitution will presumably prevent any further unfortunate accidents like the opposition parliamentary victory in 2015 — and by a happy coincidence (for Maduro), it also provides an excuse for not holding the scheduled presidential election in 2018. After all, new rules are coming. Why do it under the old rules? Nobody is fooled by all this
flim-flam, and it is no surprise that Oscar Perez, whether he is a deluded revolutionary or a secret government stooge flying false colours, chose to drop his little hand-grenades on the Supreme Court. It has become a symbol of the illicit manipulation by which Maduro clings to power, and therefore a natural target for those who oppose the government (or pretend to). In either case, Maduro has his pretext, and will now clamp down harder and try to terrify the opposition into submission. It is probably going to get much nastier yet in Venezuela. The new Canadian Museum of Civilization opens in Hull, Quebec. The two main buildings were designed by Métis architect Douglas Cardinal. The museum collection is over 150 years old. It expanded over the years and went through many name changes. The collection also moved numerous times, including this move from the Victoria Memorial Museum building in Ottawa to its current home. In 2013, the museum was renamed the Canadian Museum of History. The museum corporation is also the steward of the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Children’s Museum. Two people hurt in weekend ATV crashes Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD
Two people were seriously injured in separate ATV accidents Saturday (June 24) in an area off Midday Valley Road near Merritt. Both patients were extracted by Nicola Valley Search and Rescue (NVSAR) one after the other that afternoon. A search and rescue crew was dispatched to a call of a female rider who had lost control of her all terrain vehicle (ATV) and fallen down a steep embankment, NVSAR manager Lynn Broekhuizen told the Herald. “Paramedics were on site, but they didn’t have the means to get her up,” said Broekhuizen. The search and rescue rope team responded and assisted getting the woman up the embankment and into the air ambulance that was waiting for her. “She was quite badly injured and we had to ensure that she was

Assault at brake check Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD
A semi-truck driver from Salmon Arm is facing charges of assault and dangerous driving for an incident that occurred at the Clapperton brake check north of Merritt on the Coquihalla Highway Sunday (June 25). “It sounds like the incident had started in Kamloops between a tow truck driver and a semi-truck driver,” said Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore. “I’m not sure what the original complaint was.” Dunsmore said the 62-year-old driver of the semi-truck was in the brake check when the tow truck driver drove in to confront him about the earlier incident. “The semi-truck

driver kicked him in the face and assaulted him, and then took off,” said Dunsmore. She said the semitruck driver also smashed his rig into another semi-truck while exiting the brake check. That vehicle was parked and no one was in it at the time, Dunsmore told the Herald. The tow truck driver, who is from Hope, B.C., contacted the Merritt RCMP who located the truck and pulled it over. The semi-truck driver was arrested on the Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt without incident, said Dunsmore. She said the incident at the brake check occurred at about 8:30 p.m.
“We got word that this person was in a lot in pain and had some significant lower body injuries. The air ambulance [paramedics] said they would take [the woman] to Kamloops and come straight back,” she said. “BC Ambulance was not able to access that patient because it would’ve required an ATV ride, which they’re not allowed to do,” she told the Herald. The man was loaded into a stretcher pod by SAR members and
transported to Royal Inland Hospital via the helicopter. There were many ATV riders operating in the Nicola Valley this weekend as the Quad Riders Association of BC hosted its annual poker run in Merritt. Broekhuizen said she did not know if the injured individuals were part of the group. She said that when people ride their ATVs, it’s important to make sure you ride to your capabilities and wear a helmet.
RCMP: Tips leading to arrests Keep the information coming. Thanks to an appeal made to the public through local media (including the Herald), Merritt RCMP’s general investigation section has received new information on drug trafficking operation in Merritt in recent weeks. The tips have helped pinpoint suspected drug traffickers in town, RCMP Const. Ryan Dell told the Herald. “Information is exceptionally valuable and new information is always better than old information.”
Both patients were wearing helmets when they crashed, she said.

Surrey man facing multiple charges after threatening RCMP Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD
A 19-year-old man from Surrey is facing charges for assaulting and threatening police officers after getting his rental car stuck in the woods near Merritt. Anhad Virk contacted police at about 5 a.m. on June 22, when his vehicle became stuck in the bushes off the Shrimpton Creek forest service road near Highway 97C, said RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore. A tow truck was sent to find him, but was unsuccessful and he called police again at about 8 a.m. Police officers attended the scene, and helped locate the man who had driven the rental car into a clearing, said Dunsmore. “There were bumpers and lights and pieces of the vehicle [lying around] and he got caught up on several stumps and rocks in there,” said Dunsmore. During his calls with dispatch, Virk indicated he had been travelling with a woman, but when asked about her whereabouts by police, his story began to change, she said. “His story was very sporadic,” said Dunsmore. Virk’s behaviour towards police was quite aggressive, said Dunsmore, adding that officers became suspicious of the man. “He was very erratic, his conversation was very aggressive and very gangster-like and he was ringing warning bells with the members,” said Dunsmore. Upon further investigation, the police discovered Virk was in breach Const. Tracy Dunsmore of recognizance for havMerritt RCMP ing a knife on his person. He was arrested and charged for the breach, but continued to be belligerent and threatened police, Dunsmore said. “The threats were fairly extreme,” said Dunsmore. “We expect some kind of [negative] conversation but [this] was ongoing and throughout the day, and [he] was threatening one specific officer, involving family and such.” Virk was then charged for uttering threats, and brought before a justice of the peace. After spending the night in police custody, he’s facing even more charges. Dunsmore said police are charging Virk with multiple counts of assaulting a police officer after he spit on several RCMP members and punched one in the head. “He kept creating disturbances in cells and [officers] had to go in. He was covering the cameras, he was trying to harm himself,” said Dunsmore. “When they got in there he would react and attack.” Vick has since been remanded in custody and will appear in court on July 6.

CARDBOARD COASTGUARD Logan Lake Secondary students in Mr. Sorochan’s Outdoor Education 9 course were given a task of creating a seaworthy cardboard boat using only the following materials: cardboard, one roll of duct tape, one roll of masking tape and simple house paint. The longer the boats floated, the higher the project grade. “Some students stayed dry while others went for a quick dip,” said Steve Sorochan. Photo courtesy of Susane Sorochan

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS ROTARY PARK
Merritt celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day No matter what you call it, Indigenous Peoples Day in the Nicola Valley was once again a great opportunity to celebrate First Nations culture. In Ottawa on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that, in the spirit of the United Nations declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, as of next year National Aboriginal Day will be known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. In Merritt, the Conayt Friendship Society hosted a bevy of festivities in Rotary Park, including cultural dancing, a watermelon eating contest, face painting, archery and a variety of games such as the balloon toss and tug-of-war. Those in attendance could be found around the park with family and friends, grabbing a bite to eat, checking out craft tables and the Sylix and Nlaka’pamux Tipis, and taking in some music by Randy and the Wild Horse Band during the day-long event.

GRAD 2017
NICOLA VALLEY NEWS
FAREWELL SPEECH Good Evening. On behalf of the School District and the Ministry of Education I would like to welcome you to this year’s graduation ceremony and thank everyone for being here on this very special occasion. I would also like to start with what is most important and that is on passing on our congratulations to the graduates of 2017. Graduates, you should be very proud of your accomplishment. As adults we sometimes forget that most of you have not only successfully completed your K-12 education, but that you have done this while working part time jobs, playing sports, participating in the arts, volunteering within your community and in some cases supporting elders or other members of your family. It is clear in my mind that with the character and qualities you demonstrate on a regular basis our communities and our future is in good hands. Going forward I hope you share our confidence and consider the glass more than half full. Be sure to challenge yourself and reach for your full potential in whatever you choose to do. You are just starting your journey and there will be obstacles, but you have already proven that you are well equipped to both persevere and overcome. In closing I would like to thank all of the people who supported you in reaching this milestone. Parents, extended family, teachers, principals, the community, all played a role in supporting you and I encourage you to acknowledge them. Graduates, the District is proud of you, and we wish you all the best for your future. Thank you and enjoy your graduation. S

GRAD 2017
2017 VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH Seventeen Good evening family, friends hounoured guests, teachers, other faculty members and last but not least the class of 2017. First of all, and because I might not have a ride home if I don’t I would like to thank my family. I would like to thank my family for pushing me to become the person I am today and the person I will be in the future. For making me laugh and push through in times where I wanted to give up, a feeling I think most grads can relate to. Most importantly I would like to thank them for the strength that they have. This strength really got a chance to shine through as life dealt our family the hardest challenge we will have to face. I would also like to thank the teachers for their endless support, their sassy comments and specifically Mr. Cavaliere for teaching us that a dentist appointment isn’t always the best excuse for getting out of class, especially when you use it multiple times in one week. I would like to thank my fellow graduates for the support, laughs and memories we have all given each other in the year 2017. Seventeen, it seems like just a number, but for all of us here it could contain some meeting. It could even be more to us than just the year we graduated. For some
of us it’s our current age, it could be the number of dollars we make an hour, it could be how many kids we have, it could be the number of countries we travel to or even life in or add a few zeros to it and it could be how much our college tuition costs next year. One thing that the number seventeen has in common for all of us is it will always connect us to high school. It will connect us to the one thousand five hundred and twenty days we all spent in the hallways together. Where on day one of this journey we were wide eyed and anxious grade eights who walked in packs down the hallways. It led us to day one thousand five hundred and twenty where now we are mature grade twelves who walk through the hallways alone and with our heads high ready to accept the adversity we will experience. Together, we all survived one thousand five hundred and twenty days filled with memories, laughs, tears, last minute studying, success, failure (probably caused by the last minute studying), doing the beep test or squeaking an instrument we haven’t quite mastered yet, For most of us we blinked and these one thousand five hundred and twenty days went by and now we are all here. Most importantly these days provided us with les-
Dream Big The sky’s the limit, we know you’ll go far!
sons, some of which that aren’t all taught by teachers in a class room. On day one we were taught how to open a lock, to walk on the right side of the hallway or else face the consequences. We were taught how to take cornell notes and make an interactive notebook as there wasn’t a day when we weren’t asked to set up an in and out page. We were taught the route of the mile and for some odd reason some of us learned a shorter route than others. We were taught how to actually play our instruments instead of just squeaking them, something our parents are probably grateful for. We were encouraged to sign up for everything we could, but unfortunately for some of us our fear stopped us. In the beginning two hundred days we gained and lost friendships, which most of us still have today. It then progressed and at day three hundred we were taught how to make flash cards and write our first exams, which unfortunately was the only year they were open book. Day three hundred and four came and we could all finally say we survived grade eight. The next six to nine hundred days blurred by in the bling of an eye. Slowly but surely we could open our lockers with one try, a skill some of us still don’t have
though, we walked down the hallway with less people surrounding us and the homework assignments turned into a collaborative process. We learnt to better face adversity and handle the common struggles of high school together as we all could relate. As these days went on the activities we were involved in seemed to diminish. Instead of trying new things and pushing ourselves we slimed our involvement down to what we were comfortable with. At some point our wide eyes became narrow and we remained inside our comfort zones. What also diminished was the number of hands that rose to answer a question in class or the number of questions asked by students that tested a teacher’s patience, in a good way of course. These one thousand five hundred and twenty days seemed to put a dent in our curiosity; they allowed us to settle for being comfortable. So grad class of 2017, I challenge you to be those grade eights in every aspect of life. I know that the future for us is now and most of us don’t know what it holds. Some of us could become doctors, lawyers, mechanics, teachers, carpenters, police officers, soldiers or musicians. We all have our own unique path, but what we do have in common is we will all once
again be the new kids. We will be new at job, at college or at university. We will be wide-eyed and anxious. We will be scared to ask questions, but will do it anyways. We will get involved, we will have new friendships that form and old ones that fade. But when adversity strikes I encourage you to think about the year seventeen. Think about everyone in this building, how they can relate to you and how they can support you. In the words of Westheimer “There are going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick your neck out. There will be challenges and instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them. So, as we walk out these doors, say goodbye to our family, friends and the routine we have followed for thirteen years lets challenge ourselves. Let’s be the curious grade eights who weren’t afraid of getting hurt our failure. Let’s meet every obstacle that life faces us with and not hide. Congratulations to the grads class of 2017, we did it. Courtney Christy, Valedictorian

HATS OFF TO THE GRADS This year’s graduating class from Logan Lake Secondary might be small, but the group of 11 students (one missing above) have accomplished a great deal during their time in the community, wrote Logan Lake resident Barrie Ogden. She provided an excerpt of the speech made by co-Valedictorians Jordan Glavine and Shane Wonnacott: “As a unit, we call ourselves, ‘The Kids,’ having grown up and learned together. We will always be that to each other — never anything less. And, there’s virtually nowhere else in the world other than in Logan Lake, we’d have wanted to grow up — not only because of the community, the schools, [our] parents or the relationship we have with our teachers but — most importantly — the relationship we have with our friends! And that is why, with not only pleasure but great pride, we present to you the grad class of 2017!” Photo courtesy of Angela Clements/Lifetouch
LUMBER DISPUTE
Another border tax added Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS
The B.C. government’s minority turmoil won’t affect the effort to support the province’s forest industry and negotiate a new softwood lumber agreement, Forests Minister John Rustad says. In his first days since adding responsibility for forests to his aboriginal relations portfolio, Rustad was responding to the U.S. Commerce Department’s announcement Monday that anti-dumping duties are being imposed on top of countervailing duties imposed earlier. The anti-dumping duty adds almost seven per cent more to the nearly 20 per cent duty imposed on most sources of Canadian lumber exports to the U.S. For companies specifically reviewed by U.S. trade officials, the anti-dumping rate is 7.72 per cent on Canfor, 7.53 per cent on Tolko, 6.76 per cent on West Fraser, 4.59 per cent on Quebec-based Resolute and 6.87 for all
Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad has added responsibility for forests to his duties. Black Press/files
others. Rustad was named forests minister last week as long-serving minister Steve Thomson was elected speaker in a job that may last only a week, with a confidence vote in the B.C. Liberal government expected on Thursday. Rustad said the government is prepared to buy lumber for future government projects while it argues its case with the U.S. at the negotiating table or in the courts, but that won’t happen immediately. Premier Christy Clark proposed the purchase option during the recent election cam-
paign. Susan Yurkovich, president of the B.C. Lumber Trade Council, said the latest duty continues efforts of the U.S. lumber industry to restrict imports and drive up the price of their products. “The ongoing allegations levelled by the U.S. industry are without merit,” Yurkovich said. “This was proven in the last round of litigation and we fully expect it will be again.” U.S. Lumber Coalition spokesman Zoltan van Heyningen said the anti-dumping decision is preliminary and additional investiga-
tion will be carried out by the U.S. Commerce Department. “For years, Canada has unfairly distorted the softwood lumber market with billions of dollars in support of their producers,” van Heyningen said. Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr recently announced a support package for forest companies facing the fifth round of U.S. duties, including loans and loan guarantees to help companies keep running. Loans would be at market interest rates and do not constitute a subsidy, he said.

SUMMER SWIMMING
Otters in the swim of things at home meet Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD
The Merritt Otters swim team rose to the occasion on the weekend, achieving almost 100-percent best times at their home meet. A total of 34 members of the local club took part in the two-day competition that attracted close to 200 swimmers from throughout southwestern B.C. “The Otters did a great job coming through in all their swims,” said head coach Gabriel Lee. “Some races that stood out for me were the 100metre freestyles in all age groups. We had a lot of first-place finishes and grit coming through. “Everyone swam fast. I think they brought their ‘A’ game and were ready to compete against anyone,” added Lee. Aggregate gold medalists for Merritt were Evan Hales, Evi Slanzi, Bianca Cavaliere, Aby Thoms and Isaac Asselstine. Silver award winner was Koen Hales, while bronze aggregates went to Paige Asselstine and Laura Lefebvre. “It’s relieving after a weekend like this to

The Merritt Otters were in fine form on the weekend at their home meet. (Clockwise, from top left) Miranda Cavaliere competes in the division three girls’ 100-metre individual medley on Saturday. Isaac Asselstine swims his way to an aggregate gold medal in the division three boys category. Head Otters assistant coach Jensen Cavaliere helps young Gavyn Black along in the under-six boys 25-metre breaststroke event on Sunday. With less than two months until training camp, the Merritt Centennials hockey club has announced the signing of three new players for the 2017-18 season. They are 17-year-old forward Matthew Kopperud, 18-year-old centre Brendan Schneider and 17-year-old defenseman Jackson Munro. All three attended the Centennials’ spring camp in Merritt in March. Kopperud might be familiar to Merritt fans as he dressed for two Cents’ games last season as an affiliate player while still attending the Pursuit of Excellence hockey academy in Kelowna. In 52 combined regular-season
and playoff games with POE’s prep and 18U teams last season, Kopperud scored 28 goals and added 34 assists for 62 points. A native of Denver, Colorado, the five-foot 10-inch, 170-pound Kopperud played one season with the Evolution in his home state before joining the Pursuit of Excellence program in the fall of 2015. The five-foot eight-inch, 160pound Schneider hails from Wellesley, Ont. He divided his playing time last season between Albany Academy in upstate New York and the Boston Bulldogs U18 team in the Massachusetts High School League. In 44 regular-season games with the two teams, Schneider recorded 21 goals and 21 assists for
42 points. Schneider has already accepted a scholarship to NCAA division one school Mercyhurst, beginning in September of 2019. Munro is a native of Vancouver, and played Junior B hockey for the Richmond Sockeyes of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League last season. In 50 total games with the Sockeyes, the five-foot 10-inch, 165-pound Munro garnered 31 points (five goals, 26 assists). The Cents’ three new acquistions join a Merritt team that has 16 eligible returning players from last year’s squad, although several of those potential returnees have accepted scholarships to play college or university hockey beginning in September.

It has also been reported that a few Centennials are entertaining offers to play in the United States
Hockey League (USHL) next season, but no signings have been confirmed.

Gillis hits hard times at Merritt Speedway Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD
Some days, it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. It was one of those occasions for Merritt stock car driver Brad Gillis Saturday night at the Merritt Speedway. Competing in the 10-lap Hobby heat event, Gillis and his Monte Carlo-El Camino hybrid vehicle (nicknamed El Carlo) were crunched not once but twice in a span of a few minutes. Both sides of the front end were trashed. The second fender bender may well have ended Gillis’s racing season. “I’ll fix everything, eventually,” said Gillis shortly after being towed off the track. “But, it’s going to be tough, with working 13-hour days, and a new house and stuff.” After a great rookie season in the hobby division last year, little has gone right for Gillis in his sophomore campaign. He got whacked on the opening weekend in May and couldn’t finish. The

Merritt’s Brad Gillis crunches fenders with Clayton Scott from Kamloops in racing action at the Merritt Speedway on Saturday. After a quick stop in the pits for repairs, Gillis returned to the track — only to whack the other side of his car in an altercation with Merritt’s Hud Lindberg. Ian Webster/Herald
same weekend, he had to watch in anguish as his younger brother, Cayle, totalled his ride when he hooked up with another car and rolled. The racing on Saturday had its bright spots as well. Logan Lake’s Sean Dandy and his front-wheel-drive Nissan Maxima continued to tear up the six-and-eight-cylinder
bomber class, setting a new fastest-lap record for the second time this season, and winning both the heat and featured main events. Dandy’s wife, Amanda, along with Terry Mockford also notched wins for their Logan Lake racing team. Merritt’s Larry Ruttan picked up a couple of victories in
the hobby class, while both Adam Nielen from Chilliwack and Barry Bussiere from Abbotsford had a race win and a fastest time in the fourcylinder bomber and hobby classes respectively. The next racing date at the Merritt Speedway is on July 8, with time trials at 5 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m.

Epic1000 departs Merritt Quads invade the Valley
Twenty-one enthusiastic riders from as far away as Fairbanks, Alaska and Richmond, Vermont headed out bright and early on Saturday morning from Rotary Park on the Epic1000 bike race from Merritt to Fernie, B.C. One additional rider started in Fernie, and was riding the course in the opposite direction. Organized by Lennard Pretorius from Kamloops, the multi-day, largely off-road event is a completely self-supported bikepacking ride/race that crosses the southwestern region of the province from the Nicola Valley to the Kootenays. The 1,040-kilometre, 11,000-metre elevation traverse consists mostly of old decommisioned railgrades (including the former Kettle Valley, Columbia Western and Great Northern lines), with a few challenging sections of single-track, some gravel forestry roads and some paved sections. The inaugural Epic1000 was held last year, with 15 starters and seven finishers. Pretorius was the overall winner, completing the arduous journey in four days, two hours and 45 minutes. “For some, it’s a race, but many others are just touring it — for the experience, for the challenge and for the scenery,” said Pretorius prior to the outset of this the 2017 Epic1000. By the time this edition of the Herald hits the newsstands on Thursday, many of this year’s competitors will have completed the race. Their results, and the progress of those still not finished, can be found at http://trackleaders.com/bcepic17. Ian Webster/Herald
The Nicola Valley resonated with the sound of off-road, four-wheeled vehicles last week as members of the Quad Riders Association of B.C. gathered in Merritt for an ATVBC-sponsored poker ride. Participants came from throughout the province, and as far away as Tampa, Florida. The 64-kilometre poker ride officially took place on Saturday, but guided rides began as early as Tuesday. “It’s not a race; it’s not a timed event,” said one of the organizers, Ralph Matthews. “We don’t want anybody hurting themselves.” On Friday evening, the 55-plus rider-and-vehicle combinations held a parade from the Merritt rodeo grounds to the Sweet Shop downtown for ice cream. (Above) Kathyrn Walker and her 11-month-old pup Dodger were two of the parade partcipants. “We try to make this a family event,” said Matthews. “The more kids involved the better.” The parade to the downtown was led by Merritt mayor Neil Menard on his three-wheeled motorbike. The Merritt Bench Warmers U14 mixed softball team tuned up for the provincial championships in Barriere from July 7-9 with a convincing 13-2 victory over Kamloops at Central Park on June 22. Merritt got strong pitching performances from Justin Collins and Missy McDonnell. (Above) Merritt’s Nathan Saulnier beats the throw to home to score a run in the first inning.
