Forager made smart GOOD LUCK survival decisions TO ALL THE MERRITT From Page 1 The man was unharmed and able to walk out of the woods Tuesday morning when at about 11a.m. he came across the search party that was looking for him. He initially set out to look for mushrooms on Sunday morning, and purposely spent that night in the woods, but didn’t plan on spending another. When he didn’t return home as expected, his family reported him missing, Merritt SAR manager Lynne

Broekhuizen said. While picking mushrooms in a burned out area on Monday, the man found himself on steep, rugged terrain. It was also getting dark and started to rain, which made the ground slippery. He decided it was too risky to continue walking and opted instead to hunker down for the night by building a shelter and fire. “When you realize that you cannot safely carry on, get yourself in the most comfortable posi-

tion that you can and settle in for the night,” Broekhuizen said. “He did what you’re supposed to do,” she said. Broekhuizen said the man was correct to stay in one spot, and have fire making materials with him, clearing brush and needles away to prevent causing a forest fire. Making sure one is prepared for an outing outdoors and telling family and friends where you’re going and when you expect to return are important to keep in mind as well.

into their vehicle. Dunsmore said police weren’t called to the scene until about 7 p.m. that night. “They didn’t notice the stuff missing until after, she said. The robbers were long gone by the time RCMP arrived. Mounties obtained the

Cops disappointed with lack of bike helmets By Michael Potestio THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

Bike to Work Week wrapped up last week, and police were disappointed to see a lack of people wearing helmets. RCMP Constable Tracy Dunsmore said police handed out positive tickets that came with coupon-type rewards to people they saw practicing safe bicycling habits such as wearing helmets. Unfortunately, police still have a majority of the tickets left over. “We had a really hard time finding people wearing helmets and biking properly,” Dunsmore said. Mounties had about 200 tickets to give out, but only distributed about 60, Dunsmore said. She said the local skate park was a notorious place to find people skateboarding and biking without wearing a helmet. “I was a little bit disappointed that there were so many kids and adults — and especially the adults — not wearing helmets,” Dunsmore said. Police will continue to hand out the positive tickets throughout the summer if they see someone practicing safe biking habits. Police didn’t hand out any tickets to people for failing to wear a bike helmet that week, Dunsmore said, however, they might have to now after noticing the absence. The fine for not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle is $29, Dunsmore said. There are also fines for a bicyclist failing to remain at the scene of an accident, biking without at least one hand on the handle bar, riding a bike without lights after dark, carrying passengers on the bicycle, riding on a sidewalk and failing to ride on the right hand side of the street each carry about a $109 fine.

Handlen bail denied The accused killer of 12 year old Nicola Valley resident Monica Jack been denied bail. Garry Handlen, now 67 years old, has been in custody since his arrest in November of last year.

He will remain in prison until his next court date, this coming November. The hearing was two weeks ago, and a rally was held in downtown Merritt just prior by a group demanding jus-

tice for the killings. Monica Jack went missing nearly 40 years ago, in May of 1978, riding her bike north on Highway 5A, just outside of Merritt. Her remains were not found until June 1995.

MERRITT CENTENNIALS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Handlen is also charged with the firstdegree murder in the death of Kathryn-Mary Herbert, aged 11, three years prior to Jack’s death, in 1975.

HERALD OPINION The modern prisoner’s dilemma It isn’t common knowledge, but back in World War II, there were nearly a million Axis prisonDavid Dyck ers of war In between on American THE LINES soil. They were housed in camps, and many of them describe the experience as positive, especially after the long, cramped trip across the ocean in the belly of a ship. They were mostly German, but some were Italian, and even fewer Japanese, spread out over nearly every single state in the union. When the public found out, and then the media, there was some outrage. “These were the ones killing our sons overseas,” was the argument. “And now we’re putting them up, feeding them, while civilians are rationed?” The argument from the government was that so long as we treat the enemy well, they’ll treat us the same when our soldiers are captured. Then it came out that American soldiers were not treated the same overseas, particularly by the Japanese, but also in Germany in Italy. They were living under horrible conditions and often subjected to beatings and starvation. But the U.S. government stayed firm. Their position became if we start treating them badly, then we’re no better than them. I know that it’s different now. Warfare has evolved, and particularly in the Middle East soldiers and civilians are often indistinguishable. That brings up the question of whether prisoners are murderers or soldiers doing their job. Maybe the rules need to change. But one thing that won’t ever change is the moral implications for how we treat the enemy.

The big one that got away OTHMAR VOHRINGER The OUTDOORSMAN There’s not a hunting camp in the world where stories of the “big one that got away” don’t circulate. They even have names and many have become famous in their own right. For example “Mossy Horns” was a huge whitetail deer buck that

had hunters stumped for many years and eventually became so legendary that a hunting product company named one of their product lines in the animal’s honour. Other names that circulate in hunting camps are “Ghost of the Forest,” “Swamp Monster” and “King of the Woods,” to name a few. Other big elusive trophy animals are named after characteristics in their appearance such as the famous “Hole in the Horn Buck”, the largest whitetail buck on record. While many of these stories are the fiction of imagination and part of

hunting lore, there are just as many animals that really lived and have been seen many times by hunters but never close enough to be taken. Most of these trophies have been found dead after they succumbed to a vehicle accident or died of natural causes. The Boone & Crockett Club, the official trophy animal record keepers in North America, regularly update their records with trophy animals that have been found dead, and almost without exception these trophies are by many points larger than anything hunters have taken.

Why is it, you may ask, that the biggest trophy animals outsmart hunters? Well, they don’t really outsmart hunters. The reason why some game animals grow very old and big is because they lead a very withdrawn life; often these animals don’t even associate with their own kind other than during the breeding cycle and even then they are very cautious. In human terms you could say that these animals went off the grid. Scientists have studied at length why some animals behave in such a way but have yet to come

up with a clear answer. On May 22, 2015 the Vancouver Sun published a long article about a bighorn ram that was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 940 west of Longview, Alberta. The person who found the unfortunate ram contacted the authorities for permission to keep its skull and horns. The man also contacted the Boone & Crockett Club, asking them to measure the horns of the ram to see if that exceptional animal would make it for a trophy recording.

YOUR OPINION

An open response to Minister Polak’s assurance of the “safety of biosolidsâ€? Dear Minister Polak, A number of our community members who have taken their time to write to various levels of government about the biosolids issue have met with replies that suggest they are naĂŻve as to the scientific facts around composted sewage sludge. This is just not so. Our community is not the illiterate, ignorant constituency you seem to want to believe it to be. We have done our research. We have done more than you have in merely accepting the sludge industry’s one-sided, selfjustifying science. We have looked at other countries, and more recent independent studies. What we find is very troubling indeed. The dangers fall into a number of categories, including, hormones and syn-

thetic hormones, prion contamination, toxin contamination (heavy metals and toxic organic chemicals), and so-called emerging substances of concern, or ESOCs (microbial, organic and inorganic contaminants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products — amongst a number of ESOCs). They are all worrying and all demand far more study. You folks in government ignore these findings at your peril. Below is a sample of such science which clearly backs our claim that we need to stop this land application of toxic sewer sludge until we are entirely clear as to what we are dealing with. We need to be cautious with Mother Earth. We understand that you see this dispersal as a cheap way to deal with big-city sludge, but frankly, we are the ones taking all the risks for this deci-

sion. This burden you put on rural areas is unfair, unhealthy and unsustainable. It is time you reconsidered this method of dealing with waste. Here are some of the new independent studies our government should be taking seriously (links are available in the online version). “A case for caution re-visited Harrison and McBride, Cornell, 2008-09. A compendium of some 65 studies. These represent some of the finest soil scientists in the world and they simply see too many issues, problems, and worries with land application of biosolids. A recent in-depth German study (2013) clearly states that risks are too high for land application and urges an end to this practice as soon as possible. A 2012 study from scientists at the University of

Aberdeen “studying sheep maintained on pastures fertilized with sewage sludge . . . found a high incidence of abnormalities in the animals. As the article states, “It is our opinion that all spreading of sewage sludges, humanure and biosolids on agricultural land in the UK should be stopped until it is proved to be safe. “National Toxics Network of Australia media release from May, 2015 recommends: “Stop the use of biosolids as fertiliser pending further investigation of pharmaceutical contaminants. A very good piece of objective journalism from The Guardian a few years ago called “Too good to waste? clearly maps out the issues with land application of biosolids. Then there’s a disturbing study from 2011 called “Survival of infectious prions in Class B biosolids, an article in the highly

respected Nature Journal called “Prions’ great escape, and a recent and worrying study from 2012, “Persistence of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy infectious agent in sewage. In light of the recent win in Quebec against the tobacco industry by the class action suit, resulting in some 12 billion dollars paid in damages, I believe it behooves both the sludge industry and the government endorsing it to be aware of the direction that recent independent science is pointing, and consider carefully if they are not opening themselves up to liability. The knowledge is out there, and denial will not be a protection from future prosecution. What our provincial and federal governments have neglected to take into consideration is that they have agreed to act in envi-

ronmental issues such as this with the precautionary principle in mind. The precautionary principle denotes a duty to prevent harm, when it is within their power to do so, even when all the evidence is not in. This principle has been codified in several international treaties to which Canada is a signatory. It is time to reconsider this dubious practice of land application of biosolids. There are alternatives (see recent clean incineration methods in Denmark and Germany that actually return energy to the grid) that may have an initial cost for the government to implement, but future medical costs and environmental clean-up costs will surely amount to much more in the long-term. Sincerely, Don Vincent Merritt BC

Biosolids fearmongering doesn’t help Dear Editor, In a recently published letter a reader “explained the wisdom of opposing biosolids on agricultural lands (“‘Biosolids’ are marketing waste, May 28). His list of hazards included PCB’s, endocrine disrupters and

other scary-sounding things. He could have done a simple search of the massive amount of study and regulation that backs up the safety of worldwide use of treated sewage sludge. Instead he chose to fearmonger. To prove his credentials as a NIMBY — a.k.a. BANANA

hedonism

(Build Absolutely Nothing Near Anything), CAVE (Citizen Against Virtually Everything), LULU (Locally Unwanted Land Use) — he advocated the precautionary principle. This principle has given us such inanities as windfarms and bicycle helmets, as well as shut down mines

and stalled pipelines. It brings to mind the aphorism, “It is better to remain quiet and be considered a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. Eric Doll Logan Lake

Schoenborn’s outing privileges could be overruled

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10TH @ 7 PM LOCATION: Nicola Valley Memorial Arena

Child murderer Allan Schoenborn may still be denied escorted access into the community if the Crown convinces a B.C. Supreme Court judge to designate him as a high-risk accused. Under the recently past federal Bill C-14, if Schoenborn was designated a high-risk accused, his review hearings could be held once every three years instead of annually and escorted visits into the public could only be granted for medical reasons. Neil MacKenzie, a spokesperson for the criminal justice branch, told the Herald the Crown is in the process of reviewing whether or not to pursue this designation. He said also there is no deadline to apply for it. Last Friday, a BC Review Board panel granted Schoenborn the ability to request supervised outings from the Colony Farm Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Coquitlam, where he’s lived since being found not criminally responsible for murder-

ing his three young children at their Merritt home in 2008. The hospital’s director has the discretion to approve or deny an escorted trip into public. “If the director wants, for compassionate reasons or for testing, to observe or assess how [Schoenborn] would do with slightly more mobility, it gives the director the discretion to do it, BC Review Board chairman Bernd Walter said. Walter said two healthcare workers would accompany Schoenborn on such outings. These staff supervised community outings (SSCOs) Schoenborn can now be granted have stages. In the first stage — known as the assessment SSCO — once brought outside the hospital, the patient isn’t allowed to go beyond an arms length of his two supervisors, except when using the bathroom. This outing is allowed to be up to an hour, and the destination could include places such as a coffee shop or supermarket, but must be within a 15 minute drive of the hospital.

A patient must go on at least three of these outings before being considered for the next step — a small SSCO. This type of outing can occur within a 30 minute drive of the hospital with a maximum of four patients participating with two supervisors. If this is successful, a patient can have the opportunity to go on a large SSCO. This includes up to five other patients, and allows them to go outside the line of sight of the supervisors. The review board didn’t order that any public notification occur in the event Schoenborn is being escorted into the community, MacKenzie said. The Crown submitted that if escorted community access was granted by the board, it should require 48 hour notice of the intended location. The director opposed this, arguing it would put Schoenborn, the staff members with him and members of the public at risk “in the event such information were to fall into the wrong hands, the BC Review Board report read.

In the disposition, the hospital director’s counsel submitted that there would be a careful assessment process to be had in decideding whether or not to approve a SSCO, and with public safety in mind as the top priority. The Crown strenuously opposed the outings, arguing Schoenborn is a violent man who hasn’t come to terms with his anger issues or the murders he committed. Furthermore, the Crown submitted if the board was willing to gamble on public safety on a triple murderer who isn’t motivated to take programs that address his criminogenic needs. While the board ultimately agreed with the director’s submission for escorted community outings, it agreed with the Crown to add four additional family members of victim Darcie Clarke to the no contact condition in the disposition. Walter said if a Supreme Court judge ends up designating Schoenborn as a high risk accused, he would lose the ability to have this escorted community access.

LNIB has reservations about Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion

God

the Word, the World

By Herman Kneller

THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

The Lower Nicola Band still has some concerns regarding right of way and environmental impacts when it comes to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion project. At an information session last Tuesday, representatives from the oil company spoke to community members about the proposed pipeline, which is expected to go through the reserve. Lower Nicola Band Chief Aaron Sam said employment opportunities and potential environmental impacts were the two main concerns presented by the meeting’s attendees.

Sam himself has raised concerns surrounding the Kinder Morgan pipeline with regards to possible oil spills and climate change. In a letter to the Prime Minister Stephen Harper last year, Sam said his band doesn’t support the Kinder Morgan pipeline because of the possibility of an oil spill in the Salish Sea. He wrote that to consider the pipeline passing through their territory, the band needs to see that the Canadian government is taking “immediate, real steps to attack climate change in a meaningful way.” He also wrote the band doesn’t support the pipeline because

the federal government hasn’t done enough to regulate the oil sands, and extract resources in a sustainable way. “If the government of Canada doesn’t take serious steps to address the above mentioned issues while engaging First Nations in a meaningful way, we will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to support the proposed pipeline expansion through our traditional territory,” the letter stated. Fast forward about a year and Sam said mitigating those concerns hasn’t happened, but the band remains open to further talks with Kinder Morgan. The band plans to have more meetings with its community

members about the oil company’s expansion, as well Sam said. The original pipeline runs through the Lower Nicola reserve, and the new pipeline would ideally run alongside it, requiring the band to give up some additional right of way, he said. “We definitely have concerns,” Sam said. Sam said the band and Kinder Morgan have been discussing an impact benefit agreement for allowing the pipeline to pass through the reserve. Earlier this spring the City of Merritt signed such an agreement with Kinder Morgan, receiving $420,000 of in-kind work for the city’s trail projects.

World’s biggest ram found in AB From Page 6 A team from the B&C club traveled from Missoula, Montana to Alberta. The result of the measurements yielded 45 and 6/8 inches of the right horn and a full inch more on the left horn. Not only did the horns qualify for entry in the trophy records, this was the largest set of horns ever recorded on any bighorn ram, making it the new world record for this species. Hunters from all over the world are known to pay $40,000 or more to pursue a record trophy bighorn sheep. However, as the Boone & Crockett records clearly show for almost all game species the real “Monsters of the Swamp,” “Mossy Horns” and “King of the Mountain” hardly ever die at

B.C. adds $10m to cut surgery wait times

About 1,000 more surgical procedures should be performed this summer after the health ministry allocated an extra $10 million. Black Press file photo

By Jeff Nagel

BLACK PRESS jnagel@blackpress.ca

Patients who have endured excessive waits for surgery may get into the operating room faster this summer. The province is injecting $10 million into the system to perform an extra 1,000 surgeries province-wide in an effort to reduce wait times. The extra money will be targeted for patients who have waited longer than 40 weeks for surgery, Health Minister Terry Lake said Monday. Orthopedic surgeries, cataracts, hernias, plastic surgeries and ear, nose and throat procedures will be eligible for accelerated treatment. Lake said the money

will open up extra operating room time in hospitals across the province, and in some cases it will be used to contract private clinics to perform extra day surgeries. “Patients want to have their surgeries done,” Lake told reporters. “If the quality is there and if it reduces wait lists and it’s paid for and administered by the public system, I think British Columbians would agree with that approach.” Just one per cent of surgeries in B.C. were performed by private clinics using public funds in 2013. It’s not yet clear how much that might increase but Island Health said in April it’s

seeking a private clinic operator to provide up to 4,000 day surgeries a year, or about 10 per cent of the region’s annual total. Further cash infusions for surgery increases are expected in the fall and early next year. Along with the promised short-term

relief, the province is also pursuing longerrange measures to make the surgical system more efficient. Many family doctors often refer to the same heavily booked surgeon due to reputation or preference, while other surgeons are sometimes idle.

Friends & Neighbours Mother and daughter helping out Auxiliary Mother and daughter volunteers, Donna Vasko and Leah Hornby, have been with the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary for the past few years at the thrift shop. Donna has been involved for four years and works on the thrift shop floor, helping customers and arranging merchandise. Leah got involved with the Auxiliary more recently, about two years ago, after hearing about the positive experience that her mother was having at the thrift shop. She now volunteers sorting merchandise and running the cash register. Donna inspired the value of volunteerism in her children at a young age. Leah has been involved with Girl Guides of Canada for over 30 years and continues to be a guide. Donna believes there is a need for volunteerism in the community and hopes to see the thrift shop and its volunteer membership expand in the future so they can continue to meet the growing needs for services in the com-

She encourages those that have spare time and are looking for something to get involved in, to consider volunteering with the Auxiliary. Even without experience working in a thrift shop or volunteering, one of the benefits is the training that is provided to new volunteers. Whether they are volunteering separately or together, Donna and Leah always bring cheerful-

What impact do you think the Auxiliary has on the community? “It has a huge impact. There are a lot of families in Merritt that can use our services.” – Leah. What is your favourite thing about volunteering with the Auxiliary? “Being able to know that everything that comes in goes back to the community and back to the people that really need it.” – Donna.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

NEWS BRIEFS FROM B.C. Site aids foster youth with ‘aging out’ The province has unveiled a new website designed to help teens in foster care to prepare for life without government support when they turn 19 and “age out” of care. The site agedout.com was designed by former foster teens to connect with vulnerable youth and showcases services and supports to help make the transition. It includes videos of former youth in care discussing real world challenges and gaming “quests” where youth earn rewards by completing

challenges like renting an apartment, getting a bank account, preparing for a job interview or dealing with an abusive relationship. “‘How do I get a job?’ ‘Where am I going to live?’ These are the types of questions we all faced when we became adults,” Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said. “But for those in the care in the ministry, the transition can be much more challenging.” About 700 young people age out of government care each year.

New election ordered for Doctors of B.C. A new election has been ordered for the presidency of Doctors of B.C. after a recount determined the first vote ended in a tie. Dr. Brian Day, a leading proponent of more private health care, had been declared the winner last week by a single vote. Officials at Doctors of B.C. (formerly the B.C. Medical Association) said the initial tally failed to count one vote for Day’s challenger Dr.

Alan Ruddiman. The run-off vote between the two takes place from June 5 to 18. B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake said last week he was unsure whether he could meet with Day as president of the organization because the government is in a court battle with Day’s Cambie Surgical Centre over whether the federal ban on doctors privately billing patients violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

RCMP lawsuit in court Women who say they were harassed and discriminated against during their service with the RCMP are in B.C. Supreme Court this week attempting to certify a class action lawsuit against the force. The certification hearing began Monday and the proposed class action would include 362 current and former officers and civilian employees across the country. The case was

CALL 250-458-2489

launched in 2012 by Janet Merlo, a 19-year officer with the Nanaimo RCMP who was among the first officers to go public with allegations. Lawyer David Klein said the common thread among the complainants is harassment, bullying and discrimination over an extended period of time. More women would be able to join the case if a judge agrees there was a systemic problem and certifies the class action.

Some procedures to be done by private clinics From Page 10 Lake said one alternative may be to instead shift to a pool of surgeons where patients get assigned to the first one available. Similarly, patients who face a long wait to get into their local hospital may be urged to instead get their surgery performed at another hospital an hour or so down the road where OR time is going unused. “For patients, it’s not as convenient perhaps,” Lake said. “But it is an opportunity to have their surgery done faster.” More recruitment and training of anaesthetists and surgical nurses is also part of the long-range plan. B.C. has increased the numbers of surgeries it performs over the years, but demand has risen faster. Lake pointed to soaring demand for procedures such as hip replacements over the last 15 years as patients realize what recent medical advancements now offer them. Each year there are more seniors who are typically living longer lives. “We know these surgeries are becoming the expectation for people who want to live a good quality of life and that is the demand we want to meet.” More than 50 of the province’s nearly 300 operating rooms are not regularly staffed, according to a health ministry discussion paper on surgical reform. It said operating rooms are generally idle because health authorities have insufficient funds to run them, but in some cases they’re shuttered because of a lack of specialized staff such as anaesthestists or insufficient local demand. According to the provincial surgical wait time website, the typical patient is waiting 45 weeks for knee replacement surgery and up to 10 per cent of them wait 77 weeks or longer. B.C.’s target is to complete knee surgeries within 26 weeks.

Fraser Health engineered its own surgery surge earlier this year, reallocating a budget

surplus to perform seven per cent more surgeries to reduce wait lists. It’s not yet known if

Fraser will be charged financial penalties under the province’s pay-forperformance system for

several hundred surgery waits that in late 2014 threatened to extend longer than a year.

DR. COLIN GAGE Spinal COLUMN Over the 19 years of being a chiropractor in Merritt, I have come across a handful of patients with a very different type of back pain. These patients were experiencing severe bouts of mid-back pain for no apparent reason. They had not experienced any form of trauma, such as a car accident, neither had they tried to lift something they should not have. After a thorough physical examination, x-rays and blood tests it was determined that they had a disease

called “ankylosing spondylitis.” It is commonly referred to as “AS.” Ankylosing spondylitis afflicts one in 100 males and one in 250 females, most commonly between the ages of 15 to 35. Although nobody knows for sure why, bouts of inflammation occur in the joints of the spine and pelvis. Each bout can last from days to months. The inflammation erodes small amounts of the bone in the joints. Once the inflammation subsides, the body responds by depositing new bone in the eroded areas. This happens repeatedly, and over time too much new bone can be formed and the joints become partially or completely fused. Eventually, this can become very painful and drastically reduce the mobility in a per-

son’s spine and/or pelvis. If left untreated, the disease can progress to complete fusion of the joints and vertebrae of the mid back and the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis, resulting in severe disability. Therefore, it is important to see your chiropractor and medical doctor early on in the disease. If diagnosed before the boney changes in the joints and vertebrae occur, there are some conservative forms of treatment that have shown to be very successful. Being very faithful to a specific daily back exercise program is a must. The exercises are designed to prevent the joints from becoming progressively stiff or immobile. Gentle chiropractic treatment for early stages of AS will also assist in maintaining and restoring the

mobility of the joints. Anti-inflammatory medications can help decrease the inflammation and bone erosion. It is also very important to maintain good posture. If the joints become very stiff or even fused, most people adopt a stooped posture. If your posture is poor to begin with, this may make the stooped posture of AS even worse. If you have bouts of pain in the mid-back, see your chiropractor so that a diagnosis can be made and diseases such as AS can be ruled out. In most cases, mid back pain is from fairly simple mechanical joint and muscle problems and chiropractic treatment is ideal to address it. As I am sure you have heard me say before, preventing the back pain from happening in the first

The gift of silence GWEN RANDALL-YOUNG Psychology FOR LIVING When was the last time you gave yourself the gift of silence? No radio or television, no traffic noise, no talking, just total quiet. This may be easier to accomplish if you live out in the country, yet many who have silence around them do not truly notice it. If we sit in silence,

and can quiet the chatter of our minds, it is possible to go more deeply into ourselves. Silence allows us to become like a still pond into which you can see deeply, and at the same time it offers a very clear reflection. It can be very healing to breathe deeply and allow the silence to envelope us. Imagine that the silence can melt away any stress or tension, in the same way that the rays of the sun can warm our bodies. In our busy lives, our senses are constantly bombarded by stimuli, be it from the media, family members or a ringing tele-

phone. Often our attention shifts rapidly from one thing to the next, or we are trying to follow several trains of thought simultaneously. Our circuits become overloaded, and automatically respond to the most demanding stimulus at the

place is the best way to address it. To help our patients with this, we are now offering core strengthening exercise programs at our office. I have expanded the Nicola Valley Chiropractic Clinic at 2076A Granite Ave by 1,300 square feet to include a fitness facility where my staff and I can teach you how strengthen your core by using a piece of equipment called a TRX, which stands for “total body resistance exercise.” This simple piece of exercise equipment allows you to train all of your muscle groups while challenging your core muscles at the same time. To see what the TRX is all about, just do an Internet search for TRX and you will see their website. If you are interested in giving it a try, just call my office at 250378-5456.

Ty Pozzobon Invitational packs ’em in By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

Outstanding Canadian bull rider Aaron Roy, from Asquith, Sask., was the winner of the 3rd Annual Ty Pozzobon Invitational PBR in Merritt on the weekend. In front of over 3,000 enthusiastic rodeo fans, Roy rode his two bulls — Wild Hogg’s 2 Dark 2 C and Vold/Prescott’s True Blood — to scores of 86 and 86.5, good for a firstplace aggregate total of 172.5 points. That was one point better than overall second-place finisher Tanner Byrne from Prince Albert, Sask., who placed ninth in the long go (82 on Wild Hogg’s Catch Me If U Can) before registering the night’s highest-point ride in the short go with an 89.5 on Vold/Prescott’s Smoke Show. Byrne was also involved in the evening’s biggest wreck, as he took on Prescott’s Proper Ripped in the bounty bull competition when Roy politely declined. In the midst of a massive ride, Proper Ripped went over on his side, briefly pinning

Byrne underneath him. Fortunately, the bull fighters were able to get the mountain of beef off the six-foot, three-inch Byrne, who was none the worse for wear afterwards. Pozzobon’s run of bad luck at his own event continued, as he was

bucked off the Girletz bull Fidget prior to the eight-second whistle. Once again, the crowd on hand were treated to a full night of great entertainment, with fireworks, a great clown act, mutton bustin’ and steer ridin’ by the youngsters and, of course, great

bull ridin’ action in the arena. Pozzobon went to great lengths to thank his hometown community for its tremendous support, the local committee for its hours and hours of hard work, and finally the many, many sponsors who came on board.

Martin named as new Merritt Centennials head coach and GM By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

The Merritt Centennials hockey club wasted little time in filling the void left by the departure of team head coach and GM Luke Pierce to the Western Hockey League’s Kootenay Ice. Just three days after the news that Pierce had signed on with the Ice, the Centennials announced that Joe Martin had been selected to take over the on-ice reigns of the BCHL’s longest continuously-run franchise. “On behalf of the entire organization, we would like to officially congratulate former assistant coach

Joe Martin as the new head coach and general manager of the BCHL Merritt Centennials,” club president Neil Menard stated in a press release dated May 29. “We feel confident that Joe is, without a doubt, the right fit for the job, and we are really looking forward to having him lead the team,” Menard added. “Joe has been a loyal employee of the Centennials for the last four years. His familiarity with the team, his extraordinary talent and his coaching ability, combined with his unwavering dedication to the entire organization and community, made moving him into this position

an obvious decision on our part.” Newly-appointed Cents’ head coach and GM Martin had this to say about his appointment:

“I feel very fortunate to be hired in this role. It’s a position I feel ready for, and I look forward to the new challenges that will be presented to me. “I owe a lot to Luke

and the four years we spent together. Under Luke’s direction, the Centennials established a great reputation, and have always performed well.

“I’d also like to thank the Merritt Centennials’ board of directors for their vote of confidence in me.” “There has never been a doubt in my mind that Joe would be the next head coach of this franchise,” outgoing head coach Pierce said. “[Joe] is an outstanding coach and a great person. I will miss working with him, but am excited to see him take this team to another level. “I know the players, the fans and the community are in great hands with Joe at the helm.” Prior to Martin joining the Centennials organization in September of 2011, he was the

head coach and GM of the Creston Valley Thundercats of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League for four years. Martin amassed a record of 112-683-2 while guiding the Thundercats to one regular-season divisional title and two first-round playoff series wins. He graduated numerous players onto Junior A and college hockey programs, and was named the KIJHL Eddie Mountain Division Coach of the Year in 2010-11. Martin is married. He and and his wife, Katelyn, have a oneyear-old son named Peter.

MSS girls rugby team ends season in fine fashion By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

With close to a dozen Grade 12 players in the lineup, the Merritt Secondary School Panthers senior girls rugby team made its final game of the season a memorable one. The veteran-laden MSS squad scored on its first four possessions of the game en route to a 63-7 blow-out victory over the Mount Boucherie Bears on Thursday of last week. The Panthers may well have blanked the Bears and run up the

score even more had they not switched things around in the second half of the game. Coaches Molly Brigden, Heidi Andersen and Erica Huber had the team’s forward group move into the backfield, and their set of fleetfooted backs try their hand up front. The shift in positions made for some exciting and entertaining second-half action, and did allow a hard-working but over-matched Bears team to score their only try of the game and make the conversion. Seven different play-

ers scored tries for the Panthers, led by graduating students Kelsey-Ann Ware, Katie Huber and Jaycee Chenier, along with Rotary exchange student Julia Caccialupi — all with two apiece. Crossing the goal line once each were Keisha Henry, Danika Potter and Caitlyn Weisse. Henry also successfully kicked four conversions. With such a large group of graduating players, the MSS girls rugby program will be looking at a bit of a youth movement over the next couple of seasons.

3rd Annual Bar Bender goes June 14 By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

Well over 100 riders are expected to be in attendance at the Nicola Valley Dirt Riders’ 3rd Annual Bar Bender motorcycle cross-country races, slated for June 15 at the Chataway rid-

ing area five kilometres up Aberdeen Road in Lower Nicola. This year’s Bar Bender is the seventh stop in the PNWMA racing series. It is a closed-course event with racers of all ages and abilities competing for points.

“There will be both an expert ‘A’ and novice ‘B’ course,” NVDRA spokesperson Scott Deardon said. He also hinted at a few new surprises for riders this year. “We’ve changed the start location,” Deardon said. “It should be interesting.”

Sign-up for the 2015 Bar Bender is onsite on the day of the race, from 8 to 10 a.m. There will be a riders’ meeting at 10:30 a.m., with racing set to begin at 11 a.m. and wrap up by 3 p.m. Spectators are most welcome.

THE CONGRATULATIONS COME POURING IN!

Dear Son,

Enjoyed watching you play, Love watching you coach, Within minutes of Luke Pierce’s signing with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice, he began receiving text messages and phone calls from friends, family members, past and present players, and BCHL personnel — all congratulating him on his promotion and wishing him well in the season ahead. In the days that followed, emails filled his Inbox, and all kinds of faces stopped by the Cents’ office to convey their sentiments. Here is a sampling of the many tributes to Luke that have found their way to the Merritt Herald:

So blessed and so PROUD

Love Mom & Dad

“Luke has played a big role in helping me accomplish my goal of playing varsity hockey and developing the off-ice skills necessary to be successful in all areas of life. Luke always sought to develop the skills of each individual on the team and emphasized the importance of working together toward a common goal. I know that with the combination of Luke’s leadership and passion for hockey he will be very successful as the head coach of the Kootenay Ice. I would like to wish Luke and his family all the best in their new endeavor.” - Cents’ captain Steve Tresierra, 2010-11 “I owe a lot to Luke for my development as a player and as a person. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me to be a Centennial. I wish him all the best and I now have a new favourite WHL team.” - Cents’ defenceman Bill Marshall, 2010-12

BEST OF LUCK! Continue to work as hard as you did for us and success will follow you.

“Luke is one of the most talented young coaches out there today. He not only understands the game but, more importantly, he understands players. Anybody can dissect game tape and teach players systems, but having the understanding to get 20 different personalities to play as one — that is what separates coaches. Luke has this ability. Luke needs to be proud of his achievements so far and of all the young men he has made better along the way.” - Former Cents’ coach Maury Grant, 2009-10

MERRITT ARENA SPORTS BRIAN BARRET AND STAFF

“I’m super happy and super excited for Luke, and extremely proud of him and all that he has accomplished. I spent time coaching in the Kootenays with Creston, and I got to know a lot about the Kootenay Ice and how they operate. This is a perfect job for Luke and his family. I can’t think of a better place for him to be.” - New Cents’ head coach and GM Joe Martin “We knew it was only a matter of time before he was plucked out of here. I think it speaks volumes to Luke’s ability, his dedication and his understanding of the game that this opportunity has come about. I’m confident that things will work out for Luke. He’s just a tremendous young man.” - Cents’ Director of Hockey Operations Brian Barrett

You Will Be Missed CONGRATULATIONS, FROM ALL OF US AT THE

“I am very proud of Luke and his huge accomplishment. Luke has established himself as one of the top coaches in the BCHL through his intelligence and work ethic. He helped turn a great Merritt franchise that was struggling before his arrival into a winning team. I look forward to tracking his progress in the WHL ranks.” - Cents’ forward Diego Cuglietta, 2012-15 “I’m really happy for Luke. It almost feels like watching a member of your family grow and achieve the next step in their dream. I know this is only the first big step for Luke. I look forward to seeing his career continue. Congrats to you Luke and the whole Pierce family. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me as a player and most importantly as a person.” - Cents’ forward Silvan Harper, 2009-13 “I thoroughly enjoyed playing for Coach Luke this season. He is one of the best coaches I have had the pleasure to work with. His coaching ability will bring him success at any level. Good luck in all of your future endeavors.” - Cents’ forward John Schiavo, 2014-15
