NCES students raising money for Indigenous communities

Students are learning about the importance of protecting clean water.

Morgan Hampton LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER Students at Nicola Canford Elementary School (NCES) are doing their part to ensure all Canadians have access to safe, clean drinking water by launching a fundraiser in partnership with Water First, a Canadian charity that raises money for Indigenous communities in Canada without safe drinking water. “A few years ago, there was a lot of concern in our community when it came to light that our area was being used to store biowaste from the lower mainland,” explained Burt Bergmann, principal of NCES. “As part of that, our local community and the three bands that feed into our school became aware and active of our role in protecting water, our watershed and the need for access to safe and clean water. At that time, we also became aware from the national news of the water insecurity that many Indigenous communities face in our country. This was a shocking realization for both staff and students. Since that time, we have been looking for ways to make a difference for our fellow Canadians, specifically in the area of water security,” Bergmann continued. “Last school year we came across the Water First organization and decided that we wanted to engage with them in both a curricular way and a philanthropic way.”

Although this plan was put on hold due to COVID-19, this year the staff and students are excited to be working with Water First. The Coyotes, as the NCES students call themselves, have pledged to raise $500 between Earth Day on April 22 and Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. Water First began working with Indigenous communities in Canada in 2012 and changed their mandate in 2016 to work solely with Indigenous communities, providing education, training and resources to help those communities address water challenges. During his 2015 election campaign, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau committed to eliminating all long-term drinking water advisories on First Nations reserves by end of March 2021. However, as of November 2020, 60 water advisories on public water systems remained in effect in more than 40 First Nations communities, leaving many communities to turn to grassroots efforts, such as Water First and the fundraising undertaken by the NCES Coyotes. In order to strengthen their understanding of the science of water, and its importance to human health, NCES students are studying water from a science, art, language and cultural standpoint. “As part of our curricular work, we have accessed water testing kits from safewater.org and their teaching resources,” said Bergmann.

“We have also accessed the teacher resources from Water First. As educators, we believe that we are not just educating the mind, we are educating the heart. In many ways, we see the heart education as even more important to shaping the lives of our kids. Kids that learn to be compassionate, caring problem solvers are the kids we can confidently leave our country to.” Assisting with this initiative are the school’s First Nations support workers, Yvonne Joe and Amanda Adams. Some of the other activities that NCES students are involved in this year around water and water security are: • Indigenous: - Nłeʔkepmxcin Language classes and Nłeʔkepmx Primary enrichment class are learning the language and cultural practices connected to water - Arranging to host the “Awakening of the Canoes” for a number of local bands - Having the

Nłeʔkepmxcin language connection to water and water practices posted in hallways for all students to access o Songs and dances connected to water (ie. Paddle Song) • Book studies: - Wish Tree - The Elders are Watching - Water Walker - Water Can Be… - Why Should I Save Water - Once There Was A Raindrop - Nibi’s Water Song - We Are Water Protectors - The Water Princess - Water is Water • Science: - The science of bubbles - Water tension - Using water kits to test water at school, home and in the natural environment - States of matter - Tree planting If you would like to contribute to the NCES Coyotes fundraising, you can do so by visiting the school website.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

City Manager of Comms,Tourism and Economic Development waves goodbye Will George reflects on his time working for the City of Merritt.

W

ill George, Manager of

Communications, Tourism and Economic Development, is saying farewell to the City of Merritt after more than five years at City Hall. In that time, the City of Merritt has grown, both in terms of population and policy, with George having a hand in several of the community’s projects and major changes alongside two different mayor and council groups and fellow staff at City Hall. Some of those projects have made a significant impact on Merritt, such as the Voght St. improvement project and flood mitigation, new businesses and industry and housing developments such as the new construction on Walters St., George wasn’t able to pick just one project as his favourite. “Just being able to work with the great team, with all the departments on some of the big picture items, such as the business license review to really engage with the business community, engage with our business support organizations, with the airport development plan, creating the communications department, looking at the communications plan that we were able to create with the team here,” said George.

“I think the change of the role over the years as well, looking after the economic development, tourism and communications department, I think they all have their own projects that I’m proud to be a part of, but I think overall the community engagement piece… and forming relationships with people here in the Nicola

Will George Valley.” George noted that preCOVID, when he was able to take part in business walks, or drop in and chat with business owners, or bring them together to discuss the direction the City of Merritt was taking as far as business engagement goes, created some of his fondest memories of his role. The amount of grant money flowing into the community from several sources and levels of government is also an accomplishment which George feels the entire City Hall team should be proud of. “Looking back at the last five and a half years,

I feel that I’ve been able to leave the department better than when I found it with some of the new and exciting programs that we’ve been able to accomplish as a team, together,” said George. Beginning in June, George will be moving to the Lower Mainland, taking on the role of Project Manager with the City of Coquitlam. Although it will certainly be a change moving from a city with a population of just over 7,000 to one with more than 140,000 people, George is looking forward to the challenge. “I’m looking forward to working with the City there, working with their council and their management team, working on some of their strategic plans,” said George. “Lots of their strategic items relate directly to the experience that I’ve been able to have here working with the city of Merritt.” George is particularly looking forward to working on the Burke Mountain development, and engaging with businesses on Coquitlam’s COVID-19 economic recovery programs. A native of Maple Ridge, George is also looking forward to leaving the cold behind and returning to a milder climate. “The winters aren’t as harsh… I think it will be nice,” George said, also joking about having to get his rain jacket out of storage. “But, I’ll miss the small-town charm that

Quilchena Canna Company

Merritt has, being able to walk to work, walk to the post office, being able to pop in to all of our lovely retail stores where you know everyone and the owner is serving you at the front counter… being able to have the good relationships with the folks that are growing Merritt’s economy and our community overall.” That isn’t to say that George won’t be returning occasionally once

ing Communications Manager, Economic Development Manager, as well as a newly created Economic Recovery Advisor position. “I just want to say thank you to the community for really welcoming me in and all of the great projects and relationships we’ve been able to build,” George concluded. “It’s been a privilege and I will miss it dearly.”

COVID travel restrictions are loosened. “There’s so many connections I’ve made here and coming from the Prince George area before, I’ll be back in this area for visits once COVID restrictions ease up,” said George. “I have lots of folks to stay connected with.” George’s role at the City will now be divided into several different positions, includ-

MITRA: The Queen who left us the legacy of a long weekend Every year, the May long weekend is generally considered as the ‘real,’ though unofficial, start of summer. Family NARAYAN MITRA reunions, close- You Gotta Have ness to the end FAITH of school year, and the beginning of appreciably warm days all go to make the weekend wistfully waited for. Of course, the last two Victoria Day weekends have already been upstaged by the dreaded COVID-19 with its restrictions and limitations. Disappointments writ largely on faces of would-be holidaying public tell the story of the start of a wasted summer. But then again, even without interruption by any virus, the real antecedent of this weekend had hardly been appreciated by us. Very few Canadians stop to reflect on the purpose, prudence, and privileges of remembering a monarch of the British Empire (and Canada) whose reign left stunning legacies world over. Not only was the noble Queen Victoria a superb ruler, but she embodied in herself dedication to her God and Saviour Jesus. A regular student of the Bible, she used her spiritual sensitivities in making decisions for the nations under her sovereign control. Stories abound which give glimpses in her ways of judgment and decision-making. A well-known story of the noble Queen Victoria reflects her submission to an even higher authority which she recognised. It is familiar to every Englishman, but it stirs many human hearts even today. It is said that the Queen sat, in her Coronation week, in the Royal box, while Handel’s Messiah was being played. The lady-inSee ‘QUEEN’ Page 7 waiting went to

OPINION

Queen Victoria was humbled by her faith From Page 6

her and said, “Everyone in the room, when they reach the ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ will rise and stand until the music ceases, except the Queen. It is the Royal etiquette that the Queen should keep her seat.” The music continued, sweeter and fuller, sweet enough for heaven. When the Hallelujah Chorus was reached, the people rose and stood with bowed heads. It was noticed that the Queen was deeply moved. Her lip quivered, her eyes filled with tears, her body trembled, until they came to that burst of melody: “King of kings and Lord of lords.” Then, in spite of Royal etiquette, the young Queen stood up, and with bowed head remained standing until the music ceased. A nobler, queenlier thing she never did. Another story comes from the Queen’s older days. One day, Dean Farrar, her chaplain, was visiting her when she was ill. She had been reading a pamphlet about the Second Coming of the Lord. Turning to the Chaplain she said, “Chaplain, what do you think about the Second Coming of the Lord?” We do not know his reply, but as he left Chaplain Farrar said, “Your Majesty, why have you asked me that question?” “Oh,” she said, “I wish He would come while I am alive, for nothing would give me more pleasure than with my own hands to give Him the crown of Great Britain and India!” In her young womanhood, with life before her, she crowned Jesus King of kings and Lord of lords; and now in her old age, with grey hairs and many cares that she has borne, she wanted to give Him every crown that God had given her.

This old earth of ours has seen many remarkable coronation scenes. Before the revolution in Russia, when a Czar had died and a new Czar came into succession, the custom was this. The officials, the titled folk, the military men, and the leaders, met in the Kremlin Church in Moscow. And as the crown of the Czar rested upon the head of the incoming Czar, they all stood in their brilliant apparel, and flashing their swords in the air they cried out joyously and loudly, “The Czar! The White Czar! Who is comparable to our Czar?” Many years ago, a company of kings and princes and generals met in that famous hall in Versailles. They spent four days in very earnest conferring. Then a wondrous scene took place as these kings and princes and generals picked out a man, William, King of Prussia. They put him upon the elevated platform and they all stood around him, and they flashed their swords in the air, and they took the crowns from their heads and cried out, “All hail to William, the first Emperor of the new united German Empire.” Sixty odd million people took up the cry. Back and forth it rang, “All hail to William, the first Emperor of the new united German Empire.” A wonderful scene indeed! But these coronations, famous as they have been, pale away into insignificance in comparison with the day that is coming, the crowning day of the King of kings, when “There shall be upon the head of Jesus many diadems.” That crowning Day is coming soon. It’s nearer now than when we first believed in Him. Hence the hymn writer rightfully composed: “Our Lord is now rejected, And by the world disowned, By the many still neglected, And by the few enthroned: But soon He’ll come in glory! The hour is drawing nigh, For the crowning day is coming by and by.” Narayan Mitra is the Pastor of Merritt Baptist Church at 2499 Coutlee Avenue. merrittbaptist@gmail.com

FIRE SERVICE GETS NEW WINCH THROUGH GRANT The Merritt Fire Rescue Service just added a new toy to their bag of tricks. With the aid of a federal grant and a local business, the fire department was able to buy a rescue winch. The new winch, a small extension added to the back of the rescue truck, is operated by one person pressing a foot pedal and holding the rope taught. The winch can then lower a person or a stretcher weighing up to 10,000 pounds, safely over an embankment.

Students at Central Elementary came to school in fun finery for ‘Dress up Day’, which saw students become their favourite animal for the day. “Due to COVID restrictions, classes have been limited in what they are able to do,” said Joanne Woods, Central Elementary PAC Secretary. “We came up with a few fun themes to end the year on a more positive note. This is part of Central PAC’s morale boosting initiative. This is the second of three theme days; June 4th is the last one for the year and each grade is to dress in a specific colour to brighten up their day.” Photos contributed

New grant going towards emergency preparedness

PREVENT PREVENTTHEFTS THEFTSFROM FROM YOUR VEHICLE YOURMOTOR MOTOR VEHICLE

The grant will help Merritt’s ESS become more modernized.

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

The City of Merritt has received $24,349 from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF), one of 48 communities receiving a share of $1.7 million through the Emergency Support Services (ESS) stream, which aims to build

local emergency management capacity. This is the fifth grant Merritt has received through the CEPF since its inception. “We’ve, so far, recently received funding for evacuation route planning, last year we got it for emergency operation centres (EOC) and training, we’ve previously gotten it for flood mapping and planning, and Voght St. with the structural flood mitigation,” said City of Merritt CAO, Sean Smith. “I’m very grateful, we’ve been really well supported through this fund over the last couple years so I’m happy to see some more dollars coming in to support our emergency program.” Merritt’s approved proposal will see the support of Tabletop Training, Electronics and Equipment Procurement. The grant funding will be used to purchase five computers and other necessities such as whiteboards. “It’s really facilitating the transition of ESS from a more paper-based to a more digital-based model,” explained Smith, who noted that they are currently using mostly phones and paper to coordinate, rather than electronic or digital forms. “Both by way of provincial mandate and necessity of the age we’re needing to move more towards computer-based models, so this is just really catching up with the times and then giving these workers and volunteers the support that they need to make sure they know how to use that specialized ESS, how to use those forms and get some of the training for those particular services.” This modernization is expected to maximize the level of service during emergencies, and create a better flow of information, which will improve processing times and procedures as a whole. Through Tabletop Training, coordinators, officials and volunteers will essentially perform a role play of the emergency, creating an emergency event and then doing a run through of the expectations and procedures so that each party and individual will know their roles and responsibilities. “It’s making sure that all of the proper processes are going to be followed when the emergencies come,” said Smith. “This is just going to allow us to be better trained and better equipped when those situations come up.”

BC returns to indoor restaurant dining in new four-step plan The Government of BC hopes to return mostly to a sense of normalcy by early September.

Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM BC Premier John Horgan laid out a four-step plan this week for what he called “returning to normal life” - adding that these steps will not be all at once, but rather based on “where the science takes us.” As of Tuesday, May 25, BC moves into step one of the plan - chief in all for this step, perhaps, is a return to in-person restaurant dining. Step 1: May 25 * 60% of adult population with Dose 1 * COVID-19 cases stable, hospitalizations stable * Maximum of five visitors or one household allowed for indoor personal gatherings * Maximum of 10 people for outdoor personal gatherings * Maximum of 10 people for seated indoor organized gatherings with safety protocols * Maximum of 50 people for seated outdoor organized gatherings with safety protocols * Recreational travel only within travel region (travel restrictions extended) * Indoor and outdoor dining for up to six

people with safety protocols * Resume outdoor sports (games) with no spectators, low-intensity fitness with safety protocols * Start gradual return to workplaces * Province-wide mask mandate, business safety protocols and physical distancing measures remain in place * Return of indoor in-person faith-based gatherings (reduced capacity) based on consultation with public health Step 2: Mid-June (June 15 - earliest date) * 65% of adult population with Dose 1 * Cases declining, COVID-19 hospitalizations declining * Maximum of 50 people for outdoor social gatherings * Maximum of 50 people for seated indoor organized gatherings (banquet halls, movie theatres, live theatre) with safety protocols * Consultation process to prepare for larger indoor and outdoor gatherings with safety protocols * No B.C. travel restrictions - check local travel advisories * Indoor sports (games) and high-intensity fitness with safety protocols

Congratulations

* Spectators for outdoor sports (50 maximum) * Province-wide mask mandate, business safety protocols and physical distancing measures remain in place Step 3: Early July (July 1 - earliest date) * 70% of adult population with Dose 1 * Cases low, COVID-19 hospitalizations declining * Provincial state of emergency and public health emergency lifted * Returning to usual for indoor and outdoor personal gatherings * Increased capacity for indoor and outdoor organized gatherings, with safety plans * Nightclubs and casinos reopen with capacity limits and safety plans * New public health and workplace guidance around personal protective equipment, physical distancing and business protocols Step 4: Early September (Sept. 7 earliest date) * More than 70% of adult population with Dose 1 * Cases low and stable (contained clus-

ters), COVID-19 hospitalizations low * Returning to normal social contact * Increased capacity at larger organized gatherings * No limits on indoor and outdoor spectators at sports * Businesses operating with new safety plans. “(As of today), it means you will be able to enjoy a meal in a restaurant with some friends,” explained Horgan. “It means you will be able to have more guests over to your home, or have a barbecue, tonight.” Recreational travel is encouraged within your health region, though non-essential travel outside of your region is still prohibited. The rule is expected to be lifted in step two of the plan. By July 1, the Government of BC is hoping to lift the indoor mandatory mask rule, though this certain situation remains fluid. By early September, there is expected to be no limits on indoor and outdoor spectators at sports - this would mean that if the plan falls into place as predicted, fans will be in seats for the next BCHL season. An almost teary-eyed Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry added, “This is an important day and one we have been waiting a long time for.”

The third iteration of the race, held in late September of last year, saw around 60 racers come for the one day event - though, of course, still maintaining social distancing practices by wearing masks and having staggered start times. The racers took on Merritt’s extensive trail system, including Windy Canyon, Ridge, Godey, and James’ Joyride. This year’s race will see riders tackle a similar route - however, the event will be held over a ten-day period, with riders allowed to spend any of the allotted time

period in mid-June to complete the 120-kilometre course. Co-organizer James Oborne said that similar courses have also been set up in Kelowna, North Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, and Fernie, “to accommodate racers from those areas, and keep travel to a minimum.” Co-organizer Darch Oborne said that there will be “several individuals and teams” from the Merritt area participating. “We are thankful to have the co-operation of the Ministry of Forests, and appreciative of our major local sponsors: including Extra Foods, Interior Savings, Hack Electric, Best Western Plus, Nicola Valley Tourism and Breathe Bikes.”

Those that are registered will have their jersey sent out to them in the second week of June, available to wear despite what course they choose.

Cents d-man commits to college

Bardsley resigns as general manager of Kamloops Blazers

Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@ MERRITTHERALD.COM

Marty Hasting KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

One staple of the Centennials back court has earned himself a spot in college hockey for the 2021-22 season. First-year defenseman Liam Visram will be joining the Portage College Voyageurs of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Centennials Director of Hockey Operations John Stuart said that the organization is “so happy” for the 21-year old. “Not many people deserve this opportunity as much as

Liam. We are proud he finished his junior career with the Merritt Centennials and wish him all the best in his future.” A veteran of an impressive five seasons

on junior-level hockey, the experienced blueliner spent three games with the Ridge Meadows Flames of the Junior B Pacific

Island Junior Hockey League in 2016-17. He went on to a very successful two years with the same league’s Delta Ice Hawks, prompting a jump to the Junior A level by joining the Nanaimo Clippers in 2019. In 18 games this year with Merritt, he notched one goal and seven assists. Visram originally hails from Langley, BC. A statement on the Centennials’ webpage says that Visram will be pursuing a Business Administrative Diploma at Portage College.

CAMP SCHEDULED The Merritt Centennials are set to return to the ice this July for the team’s annual Spring Camp. Held at the Summit Centre in Abbotsford from July 16-18, camp will be open to all players born between 2001 and 2006. If interested in registering, copies of the form can be found at www.merrittcentennials.com. Cost is $300 per player, with no refunds, barring camp cancellation.

Matt Bardsley has resigned from his position as general manager of the Kamloops Blazers. “It’s a decision we made as a family and, yeah, it hasn’t been easy, but it’s just one we felt was the right one for our family,” Bardsley said. Bardsley and his wife, Stacy, have two children — twoyear-old Vince and five-yearold Brooke — and family in Oregon and California. Stacy’s parents have not seen their grandkids in nearly two years. Bardsley’s parents have not seen the grandchildren in about a year and a half. “It’s impacted us,” Bardsley said. “We’re not sure when things are going to change, but we just felt it was the right decision to make for our family, for the kids, and if we were going to make it, it was right for the organization to do it now, rather than wait until August or September to see where things are at and change then.” Bardsley said he does not have a job lined up. He is not certain where his family will

settle south of the border. “That’s the other challenge, is we’re kind of going a bit blind on it,” Bardsley said. “Most people, when you make a transition, you usually have something in place. We don’t, but we just felt, ‘Let’s go ahead and make that decision and see where things are at.’” Why now, with the pandemic’s grip appearing to loosen and increasing vaccination numbers? “Those are some things we did discuss, but we just felt it’s important to know where we can be,” Bardsley said. “In the states, it’s a lot more mobile right now. If we are in Portland, Washington or California, we know we can still get to and from to see family.” Bardsley was named GM on June 1, 2018. Over three seasons with the Blazers, the club posted a record of 87-54-9-3 and won two B.C. Division championships. He was named Western Conference executive of the year for the 2019-2020 season. The Blazers have potential to compete for a third consecutive division title next season. “It’s really hard [to leave] if

I’m being honest with you,” Bardsley said. “Our goal was to be here for a long time. It’s really difficult, but I do feel good knowing that it [the team] is in a really good spot.” Blazers’ majority owner Tom Gaglardi and president Don Moores made a push to change Bardsley’s mind. “Absolutely we did,” Moores said. “It meant a lot to him. It probably threw him off a bit, just in the sense he had made a decision, but when we said that, he thought about it a little bit further. “We’ve always been quite close. I know he’s been struggling for a while with COVID and the family situation. To actually hear he had come to the decision was certainly a big surprise and disappointing, for sure, but understandable.” Bardsley will remain in Kamloops until June 30 and is available to assist with hiring his replacement. Moores said the organization is thrilled with director of player personnel Robbie Sandland and there are no plans to make changes to the scouting staff.

Heather and Tyler Westgate will soon be opening their new showroom, offering the Nicola Valley and beyond a selection of high quality flooring, as well as the expertise and experience to perform the install or refinishing you require. Formerly WS Custom Wood Floor Co., the company is currently undergoing a name change to reflect their roots. “We changed our name to Nicola Valley Floors so we have a stronger community connection,” said Tyler Westgate. “We plan on opening a small showroom and retail location this spring in the downtown core.” The showroom will not only provide flooring options and hands on samples, it will also showcase local wood products. Very fitting for a town that has made its living in the forest industry for generations. “We have secured a rental space and are working on bringing in quality flooring options for people in Merritt, as well as feature the sustainability of local BC wood products that we already offer people,” said Westgate. “The showroom will be man-

aged by my wife Heather.” As of now, the couple are hard at work, and operating out of their storefront at 2070 Quilchena Ave. (formerly D&D Emporium), but will not have an official grand opening until all of their samples and products arrive, likely sometime in June or July. Nicola Valley Floors assures a quality install or refinishing by virtue of many years of experience and significant training in best practices. “We have almost 20 years of experience in the flooring industry, and have spent countless hours training and receiving certifications through the National Wood Flooring Association,” said Westgate. “We specialize in floor finishing with European penetrating oils and make sure all of our glues and finishes are zero VOC and Greenguard certified.” Greenguard certification involves testing a product for VOC emissions and more than 10,000 chemicals, ensuring it meets standards of low emission levels, which is beneficial to indoor air quality and, by proxy, your health, as you will spend much of your time in

your home using these surfaces. A properly installed floor will last for many years, and should be of the highest and safest quality for you and your family. “I am passionate about the sustainability of real wood floors and enjoy sourcing materials that have been made right here in BC when I can,” said Westgate, who further explains his policy on the company website. “(We) work directly with you or your designer/architect to find the floor that will suit your lifestyle for the long term. We do not work with ‘luxury’ vinyls and will politely tell you the draw backs and health concerns of these products. Real wood is the natural choice. We do plan to give people other options such as engineered hardwood, laminate and vinyl plank, but are working hard to make sure the products we offer people are consistent with our values.” Which isn’t to say that there will be a lack of variety in flooring options offered by Nicola Valley Floors. To the contrary, the options and aesthetics of real wood are limitless. “We have spent years developing relationships with brokers, distributors, and custom mills,” said Westgate. “We are able to source any width, length, and species of wood for your one-ofa-kind floor, so you don’t have to. When it comes to a truly handcrafted wood floor, our certified craftsmen have the skill and expertise to design a stunning, one-ofa-kind showpiece. We offer wood and metal inlays, intricate borders, hand-cut parquetry, just to name a few options.” And, if you’re happy with your current wood floor but want to ‘spruce’ it up a bit, wood pun intended, then Nicola Valley Floors will be happy to help you out. “We look forward to showing people that we can bring back

the natural beauty to their old, worn hardwood floors, removing years of dirt and damage, changing the colour to suit your style and even seamlessly matching and adding wood to other areas of your home,” Westgate explained. “We also use a highpowered dust containment system paired with HEPA filtration so there is almost no harmful dust escaping into the customer’s home.” If you are looking to replace or refurbish your floors, you can find Nicola Valley Floors on Facebook, currently under WS Custom Wood Floor Co. or online at https://www.wscustomfloor.com/.
