LOCAL HISTORY

A final farewell for Murray Church Fundraising efforts to rebuild the historic church continue.

Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

A chorus of “go now in peace” rang through the air as residents mourned the loss of Nicola Valley’s oldest church on Sunday. They used to gather inside, but on April 28 local residents stood before the pile of rubble that was once Murray Church to say goodbye. The 143-year-old building — which stood among the pioneer buildings of the historic village of Nicola — burned to the ground in January after it was targeted by an alleged arsonist. “We meet with the destruction of this Murray Church still visible around us. We see the ashes, we see the bell,” said Rev. Elaine Diggle, who led the service. She shared that it was this very church that led her into ministry, as Christmas Eve services

as the little white church “drew her in.” As eagles soared above, the group of over 40 who gathered below sang songs, shared stories and prayed for the old church. “Destruction by fire is not the end of church or a faith community. Few of us watched the terrible fire that engulfed

Notre Dame in Paris ... was the fire the end of Notre Dame? No,” Diggle said. “From the ashes has come the determination to rebuild that part of the cathedral that was so sorely damaged.” In the Nicola Valley, the Trinity United Church board agreed to rebuild the church if the commu-

nity could come up with the funds, estimated at $200,000. As of May 1, $1,805 has been raised. The board is also collecting memories of the church for an archive. Amrit Samra, a summer student who worked at Murray Church the past three summers, will be at

it again this year spearheading the project. Anyone with stories or photos to share is asked to email the Trinity United Church board at tucc@ telus.net. “We would love to hear your stories. It’s important — eventually we want to have a story board out here,” Diggle said.

In an effort to speed things along at city hall, Merritt’s city council agreed to grant staff the authority to make certain decisions without having to wait for council’s approval.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS MINING APPLICATION

Councillors reconsider opposition to mine City of Merritt ultimately has no authority on the application. Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Merritt’s mayor is having second thoughts about throwing city support behind a group of citizens opposed to a proposed gravel pit west of town. After deciding to send a delegation and letter of opposition to the chief inspector of mines regarding the application last week, mayor Linda Brown invited the team behind Nicola Valley Aggregates Ltd. (NVA) to share their side of the story at a special committee of the whole meeting on April 29. “Iwithin owe Nicola ders placed 1 weekValley Aggregates — and more importantly, the

public — an apology,” said Brown. “At our last meeting mayor and council heard from a delegation in opposition to a proposed gravel pit. Following this presentation council decided to send a letter and a delegation to speak to this proposed gravel pit. In doing this I believe that we put the cart before the horse, without hearing all sides of the issue.” Michael Nesbit’s presentation to council at the April 23 regular meeting outlined his concerns regarding the application, including traffic congestion, noise, air pollution, erosion of property values and health risks. “Gravel pits provide

a very important commodity to industry and communities,” he wrote in a report to council. “However, gravel pits should be located far, far away from communities for the health and enjoyment of life for their residents.” Councillors were quick to show their support for Nesbit and other affected citizens in the audience on April 23. “I strongly feel that our invisible border will not protect us from the chemicals that will be carried through the air and into city limits,” Coun. Mike Bhangu said in making the motion to write a letter of opposition to the ministry, and other councillors added this would be a good opportunity for council to support its citizens. However, coun-

cil took a step back from that position after Monday’s special committee of the whole meeting. NVA’s Saxon Peters was given the opportunity to address council, stating

Nesbit’s presentation “contained inaccuracies, assumptions and lack important details.” “All of these concerns were addressed at a public meeting, at which Mr. Nesbit and

two councillors were present,” said Peters. “The public concerns and NVA’s solutions have been documented and forwarded to both the ministry of mines and the city. Several

of the concerns were directly addressed by a senior mines inspector. I will go through them again.”

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Needs of local seniors I’m working to organize a spring tea and town hall with seniors in Merritt soon, to JACKIE TEGART hear their View from the needs and LEGISLATURE update them on the provincial services available to assist them. Our seniors have contributed so much to the community, and it’s important they are able to access the services they need to stay healthy and happy. I continue to hear that housing remains a concern to seniors who want to downsize but remain in the community they’ve called home all their lives, staying close to loved ones and to familiar supports. I continue to advocate for affordable, age-appropriate housing initiatives to help seniors age in place. In addition, last year my colleague MLA Stephanie Cadieux introduced the New Housing Access Act, requiring that a portion of all new developments be accessible as part of the BC Building Code. This would benefit those with physical disabilities as well as seniors. Seniors also want the health care they need, close to home. Our former BC Liberal government was pleased to invest $600,000 toward the expansion of the Nicola Valley Hospital and Health Centre in 2015, which helped to strengthen local services. However, a number of our rural communities continue to cope with doctor shortages and gaps in staffing at some medical facilities. While the NDP campaigned on a promise to improve rural health services, we haven’t seen much action to address this in Fraser-Nicola.

No populist breakthrough in Europe For the second time in a month, a member country of the European Union has NOT voted a populist into power. Could it be that the populist wave has broken? GWYNNE DYER It would be a The international good time for that STAGE to happen, because elections to the EU’s parliament are next month. The hardright populist parties that have already proliferated in the 28 member countries were hoping to sweep into a dominant position in the EU parliament as well next month, but maybe the story will be more nuanced. The Spanish election on Sunday saw the traditional socialist party (PSOE) increase its vote by a quarter under the leadership of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. “The future has won and the past has lost,” said Sánchez, who has raised the minimum wage, appointed a female-dominated cabinet and promised to bring in laws defining rape as sex without clear consent during his brief time in power.

That wasn’t the headline on Monday morning, of course. Good news is no news, so the media played up the fact that a particularly nasty party of right-wing populists called Vox has made it into the Spanish parliament for the first time.

Vox is anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and promises to “make Spain great again.” It wants to repeal laws against gender violence, and opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. But it actually only got 10 per cent of the votes, and most of those it stole from the Popular Party, the traditional home for

nationalist and ultra-conservative voters. Sánchez will still have a hard time putting a coalition government together — he’s probably going to have to make some deal with the Catalan separatists, which will alienate many other Spaniards — but this is not exactly populism triumphant. It wasn’t a populist triumph in Slovakia last month either. The neo-fascist candidate, Marian Kotleba, didn’t even make it into the run-off presidential vote. In the second round Zuzana Caputova, a neophyte in politics, beat the candidate of Robert Fico’s ruling Smer-SD Party, which plays by right-wing populist rules and has close links with Viktor Orban’s elective dictatorship in Hungary. The presidency is a largely ceremonial office in Slovakia, so Fico is still really running the government (although he had to step down as prime minister last year after an investigative journalist looking into links between Slovak politicians and organized crime was shot dead by hired killers). It’s not all roses yet in Slovakia, but spring is in the air.

OPINION Government creates care shortage From Page 6 Seniors have also expressed concerns about a shortage of care aides. John Horgan and the NDP recently decided to bring 4,000 of these positions into government, a move that could result in job losses and further exacerbate the problem.

Meanwhile, my constituency office has created a helpful resource guide that outlines the many services available to seniors. If you would like a copy, please call my office at (250) 453-9726. Jackie Tegart is the MLA for FraserNicola.

Nationalism poses a real threat to future of the European Union From Page 6 So what does this tell us about the populist wave in Europe in general, and about the EU parliamentary elections next month in particular? Not as much as you’d like, because ‘Europe’ is a very complicated place. What we can say is that there is a general rise in nationalism, from Brexit-supporting Britain to a huge surge of anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant feeling in Eastern European countries (which have almost no Muslims, or indeed immigrants of any sort). We can also say (although most people won’t admit it) that nationalism on this scale does pose a real threat to the future of the European Union. The European Union was the great political success story of the latter half of the 20th century. What was once the most wartorn part of the globe, the source of both the world wars, has become the most peaceful, co-operative and democratic region on the planet. It also looks after its citizens, on average, better than almost anywhere else. Why would they (or at least a lot of them) now be in rebellion against all that? Economic growth has been slower in the past few decades, but they are not poor. The gap between the rich and the rest has been widening, but not nearly as much as it has in the United States or China or Russia. Why risk throwing it all away? The EU has lost its unifying external threat. It was the menace

of an allegedly expansionist Soviet Union that drove the Western European founders of EU to bury all their old quarrels and come together, but the Soviet Union is long gone and Putin’s Russia is not really a plausible replacement. Another irritant is the growing pressure of immigration: refugees from wars in the Middle East and from both tyranny and climate change in Africa. The ‘threat’ that immigration poses is greatly exaggerated, but the 28 different governments of the EU have not come up with a coherent and effective policy to deal with it while the populists exploit it with great success. The right-wing populist group of parties in the European Parliament currently holds 37 seats in the 751-member parliament but the latest opinion polls predict that it will rise to 61 seats in next month’s election. If the United Kingdom is still in the EU at that time, which seems likely, the total could rise to a hundred, but that’s still hardly a landslide. The concern is not for the immediate future, but for the trend line. The populists have been gaining strength for two decades now, and if that goes on for another five years the EU could just vanish, the way the old Soviet Union did in 1991. So from that point of view, at least, the news from Spain and Slovakia is good news. Gwynne Dyer’s new book is ‘Growing Pains: The Future of Democracy (and Work)’.

LETTER

to the editor

Calling all local senior athletes Editor, If you’re a ‘senior’ (i.e. 55 years or older), you may participate in the BC Seniors Games in Kelowna Sept. 10 to 14. And Merritt needs you to represent it! While many activities already have participants who want to represent Merritt and the Nicola Valley, there are several sports and senior activities that, so far, don’t appear to have folks on board. So, if you do archery, badminton, bocce, carpet bowling, road cycling, darts, dragon boat, equestrian, fast pitch, five pin bowling, ice hockey, horseshoes, lawn bowling, slo pitch, snooker, soccer, squash, sturling (stick curling), swimming, table tennis, track and field or triathlon, we need you to contact us. You can go to the B.C. Senior Games Society website (www.55plusBCgames.org) to get particulars for your activity. Then email Felicity Peat, recreation programmer at the city at fpeat@merritt.ca and give your contact info. You’ll be informed of what we’re doing to get Merritt well represented in Kelowna. Darch Oborne Merritt With a few months to go before the games, there is still time for local seniors to pick up a sport they might not be familiar with, and still compete in Kelowna in September. - Editor

Healthcare auxiliaries have been working to enhance health care for all British Columbians through volunteerism and community involvement for over 100 years.

Drawing on his background in carpentry, Kyle Hall hand crafted the wood signs adorning their location at 2190 Voght Street, as well as the tables and bar tops inside. Dara Hill/Herald Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

After months of taste testing and putting the finishing touches on their brewery-to-be, the team behind Empty Keg Brew House has pegged May 8 to open their doors, and have eight unique beers to serve up to the community. Included in the fleet of drinks is a Scottish 80, an Irish red ale made with local honey from Nicola Valley Aparies and a radler with a secret ingredient yet to be announced. A fan of dark beer himself, co-owner Kyle Hall said he has something in store for everyone. “We’ve got a blonde ale, we’ve got a German pilsner, we have got a Belgian saison ... everything from lighter beers to ones with a little more colour,” Hall said. “We actually just finished bottling a vanilla porter, one of my favourites,” he added, encouraging people not to shy away from darker beers. “It’s not that scary. This vanilla porter is a really easy drinking beer and has really nice notes.” Hall chucked as he

reminisced about the early days of his brewing journey, feeding table sugar to home brew kits. It was “all about making cheap beer back then,” he said.

“Then we progressed, and about five years we went ‘Well, I wonder if we should actually do something with this?’ The opportunity presented itself and we were like well, let’s

give it a shot,” he said. Support from the community throughout the process has been tremendous, Hall said. “Things take time, but it has been really positive,” he said.

President hopes to offer a new master’s program this fall. Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) and Royal Rounds University have teamed up to share resources and enhance learning opportunities for students and staff at both campuses. The two postsecondary institutions signed a five-year memorandum of understanding on April 24 in Victoria, aimed at setting the foundation for collaboration between the schools in research, academic programs and student and faculty exchanges. The key benefit for Royal Roads will be to learn from NVIT about serving indigenous students and communities, said NVIT president and CEO Ken Tourand. For NVIT, one advantage will be exploring online learning platforms such as Moodle, a web-based tool faculty can use to assist students in their courses — something Royal Roads specializes in, Tourand said. “I’m excited about that opportunity. I’m also excited that Royal Roads has a number

of programs we think NVIT students can transfer into,” he said. While NVIT students can already transfer to many universities, partnering with Royal Roads ensures programs are fully compatible, allowing students to make the most of out of their two years at NVIT. NVIT partnered with the University of British Columbia

in 2016 to offer a masters of education in indigenous leadership — a program aimed at increasing the number of indigenous faculty members at public post-secondary institutions, in particular NVIT. That one-time program ended in December of 2018, and 26 of the original 28 students are set to cross the stage in the coming weeks, Tourand said. He hinted there may be another opportunity for those with a bach-

elor’s degree to continue their education right here in the Nicola Valley, as Tourand has his sights set on a new masters program he hopes to offer by the fall. “We’re in talks with Royal Roads and other universities around opportunities and what type of program we would want to bring,” he said. “We are excited about that and we are hopefully going to be able to announce a new masters being offered in Merritt shortly.”

Longtime employee at Ska-Lu-La bids a bittersweet farewell

The travel trailer was empty at the time of the fire, and all occupants were accounted for. Photo contributed Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

A 45-year-old Merritt man has pled guilty to setting fire to a residential trailer at Merritt Beach RV park that burned to the ground in July.

Christopher Pumphrey has been sentenced to 270 days in jail, 12 months probation and is required to provide a DNA sample for police. When Merritt Fire Rescue arrived on scene on July 9, they found

a fully-engulfed travel trailer. While people were living in the trailer, nobody was inside at the time of the fire and the residents were accounted for. “Investigation was able to determine that the fire was deliberately

set and police recommend charges to Crown counsel,” said Cpl. Brock Hedrick. Meanwhile, the alleged arsonist behind a string of church fires earlier this year is expected to appear in court next month.

Cheryl Gillett stopped working at Ska-Lu-La in 2018, but wasn’t able to celebrate her retirement until this past month. Photo contributed Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

After 32 years at work, most people would probably be looking forward to retirement. Then again, most people didn’t have a job like Cheryl Gillett. Staff and clients at the Ska-LuLa Workshop in Merritt recently celebrated Gillett’s retirement, which proved to be a bittersweet moment for the longtime employee. “I didn’t want to retire but life got in the way. You go to work and you feel good about what you do, and you always feel good being around [the clients],” she said. “I really do miss it a lot.” The Ska-Lu-La workshop has been a long-standing institution in Merritt. The organization

mA

provides opportunities for people with disabilities to work alongside staff in a variety of roles, learning important life skills along the way. “I always say that I learned more from them than I ever have taught them,” said Gillett. “They all have very, very special personalities and there are no two the same.” Sometimes, the job requires staff to take the group outside of the workshop — occasions that Gillett fondly remembers. “Over the years we’ve done some things with them that are really amazing,” she said. “We had a few really good trips with all of them for a period of a few days.”

Letter on hold for now From Page 5 Starting with the location, Peters said Nesbit was correct in stating the proposed pit would be 250 metres from the nearest residence and 100 metres from the nearest water source, but failed to mention those assets are within their own property, occupied by Paul Breaks — NVA’s mine manager and president Gary Breaks’ son. “[Breaks is] standing here today, he drinks the water every day — that is his permanent residence,” Peters said. “The nearest public residence is actually 449 metres from the centre of the proposed pit. That belongs to Mr. And Mrs. Pooley, who have written a letter supporting the actors of NVA.” Regarding the negative health effects of

silica dust, Peters said any operation that creates dust can put people at risk, including many activities that occur in and around Merritt every day. “Some examples where silica could become airborne are the city’s composting facility, Norgaard Ready Mix, untreated gravel lane ways, the various saw mills around town, and every single new land development project that enters Merritt,” he said. “It’s preposterous to claim that the excavation of gravel outside of town will be any more of a threat of silicosis than just about any industrial activity occurring in Merritt today,” he said. Peters added the company is aware of the risks from dust, and has plans to address them through measures

Snow can’t slow Panthers at home tourney Volunteers came to the rescue after spring snowfall threatened to derail the Panthers’ home tournament. Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

The Merritt Secondary School Panthers battled through the elements and 10 other teams to finish second at their home tournament over the weekend. Merritt’s senior girls team played six games across two days of competition, ultimately falling to a team from Pemberton in the final. The fact that there was a final to play in was a win, said coach Kelly Donaldson. An unexpected snowfall on Saturday blanketed the fields at MSS and Central Elementary, forcing a volunteer crew to spring into action to shovel off the snow. “I was up early that

morning and the fact that the birds were not chirping was not a good sign,” said Donaldson. “We got down to the field, there were people with snow shovels. It seemed like a losing battle in the beginning. But once more people showed up and the weather warmed a little, we had it cleaned up within an hour — which is pretty impressive on three fields.” With the snow cleared off for the afternoon’s games, Merritt had the chance to refocus and win their way into a final against an experienced squad from Pemberton. And while the Panthers came up short in the final, Donaldson said the 1-0 result was a positive for her squad.

What I’ve noticed about this team is there are certainly some strong players who always come out and play their hearts out,” said Donaldson of the Panthers team. “But the wealth is shared. Certain players seem to step up at different times, and that’s really the makings of a good team, so it’s not like we’re a team that relies on one or two players to kind of hold the fort. Everybody contributes.” Following the conclusion of the tournament, Donaldson recognized four standout performances: Jenna Kane, Megan Dunsmore, Semiah Oppenheim and Makayla Cooke. With the home tournament now in the rearview mirror, Donaldson and the Panthers will look ahead to back-toback weekend tournaments in Clearwater and Osoyoos before the season wraps up.

For the first time in three years, a new champion was crowned in the tournament’s top division, as the ‘Honey Badgers’ were dethroned by ‘Block You Like a Hurricane.’ “Our executive was stretched a little thin this year with all of us also playing in the tournament,” said Merritt Volleyball Association board member Angela Russel. “I would like to acknowledge some great guys who stepped up to help with some reffing and monitoring of gyms: Moose Coutlee, Gian Cavaliere, Harry Sandur, Shayne Cavaliere, Nate Russell and Chris VonColditz. Track athletes battle the elements Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Merritt Secondary School’s small but mighty track and field team took a trip up the highway to compete in the annual Battle of the Borders meet on April 26 and 27. Even with the unseasonably cold temperatures, the Merritt contingent of nine athletes racked up ten top five finishes, with a number of Panthers landing on the podium. “Despite being one of the coldest track days I can remember we had some warm results overall — especially for their first competition of the year,” said coach Randy Sheldon. Mason Hintz led the way for the Panthers, earning the weekend’s lone gold medal for his performance in junior boys high jump. Hintz wasn’t the only junior boy to earn a podium spot, as Evin Baird was second in long jump. Baird also finished fourth in 200 metre dash and eighth in 100 metre, while his teammate Aryan Shokraee was 13th. Shokraee also finished seventh in shot put. Distance runner Zachary Loewen took eighth in 800 metre, 19th in 1,500 metre and 11th in 3,000 metre among junior boys. On the junior girls’ side, Isabelle Heard was one of Merritt’s better all around performers, earning a silver after clearing 1.45 metres in high jump. Heard also finished fifth in the long jump, and 16th in 100 metre dash. Peter Sholtens also finished 16th in 100 metre dash among senior boys, but followed up with a fourth place finish in 200 metre, and a third in 110 metre hurdles. A pair of fresh-faced Grade 8 athletes had their first taste of action at a high school track and field meet. Andee Walker survived a gruelling schedule of events, finishing 13th in 800 metre run, ninth in 1,500 metre, and eighth in high jump. Aidan Dunsmore was fourth among Grade 8 boys in 1,500 metre and sixth in 800 metre. Meanwhile, thrower Leif Ellingsen was fifth overall in the senior boys’ shot put event, and third in the javelin throw.

MINOR LACROSSE REPORT

Thunder peewees display offensive prowess against Penticton Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Bantams earn split A balanced offence helped carry the Nicola Valley Thunder bantams to a split record in two games this past weekend. The first half of the double header in Enderby saw the Thunder facing off against a talented Penticton team, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period. Carter Shackelly answered in the second with the Thunder’s first goal of the game, but his team couldn’t take advantage of numerous power play opportunities to pull even with the Penticton team. Matthew Morrissey rounded out the scoring for the Thunder as the game finished 8-2. It was a different story in the Thunder’s second game of the day, as the team took on the Shuswap Outlaws. Nick Parr stood tall in net for Nicola Valley, allowing only a single goal in each period. Meanwhile, five different scorers tal-

adding four more goals in the third — including two more from Sheldon, and another from Jury-Hoisington. Roland Quewezance rounded out the scoring

faced more quality opportunities in the second game of the weekend, but managed to limit Penticton to 7 goals, securing the team’s second win.

Peewees find their offensive groove The local peewee squad won two games in two days against their rivals from Penticton on April 27 and 28. The Thunder jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead in the first game of the weekend at the Shulus arena with goals from Ryland Sheldon, Brody JuryHoisington and Asia Munro. The offensive onslaught continued in the second, as Sheldon picked up two more goals to complete the hat trick, while Boston Simpson and JuryHoisington added singles. The game was in hand by the time the third period started, as Antoine Gregoire had only allowed three goals against in two periods. That didn’t stop the Thunder from

for Nicola Valley, as the game would end 11-4. A change in venue and a day’s rest did little to change the outcome between the two teams in the second game of the weekend. Once again, Merritt’s offence overwhelmed the Penticton team, as the Thunder put up 11 goals for the second time in the weekend. Quewezance picked up a pair, while Noah Galbraith also had a standout performance with two goals of his own. Maddox Craske had a single for the Thunder, as did Munro. Meanwhile Gregoire

Novices go down to the wire against Kamloops Despite having a parade of players make their way to the penalty box, the Nicola Valley Thunder novices held on to win a nail-biter over their Coquihalla rivals in Kamloops. The novices earned 34 minutes of penalties to Kamloops’ eight, but Trevin Rooke made 24 stops to keep the Thunder in the game. The offensive load was carried by Wyatt

Streek and Ethan Pickering, who scored all five Nicola Valley goals between them.

Season begins for midget team The Nicola Valley Thunder midget team played their first games of the season in Enderby earlier this month. The team’s first game of the season was a gentlemanly affair with a team from Kelowna, where no penalties were called through the entire 60 minutes. But while the Thunder were able to stay out of the penalty box, they had a tough time keeping up with Kelowna’s offence, falling 17-3. Goals for the Thunder came from Beckett Finch (2) and Connor Kaboni. The second game of the weekend saw the Thunder take on the Shuswap Outlaws. This was a much more physical affair, but the outcome was similar for the Thunder, who fell 10-1. Finch scored the lone goal for Nicola Valley.

Celebration of Life

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frank Byer in Kelowna, B.C. on Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 at the age of 79 years. Frank was born in Princeton, B.C. and grew up on Copper Mountain. At the age of 17 Frank joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Cold Lake, Alta where he met his wife, of 57 years, Roberta. After 9 years of military service he brought his young family to B.C. and began working in the logging industry. In 1969 they settled in Merritt where they raised their family and remained for the next 45 years. Frank’s one true passion was driving logging truck and driving in general. He loved nothing better than the smell of a landing and hauling his logs. And in true truck driver fashion any and all holidays were more about the journey than the destination. Frank leaves behind his beloved wife Roberta, sons Ben (Judy), Barry (Helen) and daughter Catherine (Gordon) Pooley. Six grandchildren Erin (Mark) McLaws, Hayden Pooley, Court Pooley, Nicola Byer, Danny Byer and Abby Byer as well as one great-grandson Nate McLaws. Frank was predeceased by his parents Ben and Gertrude Byer, sister Mary Westfall and brothers Ralph, Alan, Jack and Jim. A memorial gathering will be held later this summer.
