The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library has announced its plans for Fall programs and events. This year, most of the events will take place virtually and be hosted online, however a limited number of programs will be hosted in-person in accordance with COVID19 health and safety guidelines surrounding physical distancing. TNRL staff have worked hard creating programs that will cater to everyone, from the smallest of tots to seniors. The Parent-Child Mother Goose program will return in a virtual format, and parents can also register their littles for the Tiny Tunes program and a Virtual Storytime, as well as some ‘Take-andMake’ craft programs, which encourage creativity while children are at home during the pandemic. “One of our more popular summer programs

was DIY Dragons”, said Meg Ross, Coordinator of Children & Youth Services. “Families who registered for the program picked up a bag of craft supplies from their closest library branch. Then we all met on Zoom to build our dragons together. It was a lot of fun to see all the variations that our participants came up with.” The two ‘Make-andTake’ programs this fall will be holiday themed, one for Halloween and one for Christmas. In November, the TNRL will be partnering with the Kamloops Art Gallery to host the first ‘Make Art Together’ program, where children six to twelve years of age can build a miniature, portable

camera obscura with an accompanying adult. In October the Tween Book Club and Dungeons and Dragons groups will resume virtually. Popular adult programs will be returning, offered virtually, via teleconference or in-person, depending on the location. The Books and Brews theme-based book club that normally sees participants meet at local restaurants will be moving to an online format. “From Sept. 3-17, the TNRL will join nearly 2,000 public libraries and thousands of readers across Canada in offering patrons access to the latest Together We Read: Canada digital book club selection, Canadian author Missy Marston’s Bad Ideas,” reads a TNRL

Computer classes, tech talks, and one-on-one tech help will also be offered virtually.” The first of the fall author events featured Geoff Strong, atmospheric/climate scientist discussing his most recent book, Inconvenient Pipeline, which is set in the Merritt and Lower Nicola area. The discussion took place on both Zoom and Facebook live at 6:30pm on Sept. 2. To celebrate Women’s History Month in October, the TNRL will

Participants will submit a short writeup about their favourite historical woman, with a chance to win prizes in three age categories: under 5, 6-12 and 13-18. The second contest will be open to all age groups and will encourage participants to do some hands-on exploration of history, by either selecting and making a recipe from the KMA collection, or by knitting something that contains a message in binary code. VIEWPOINT GOVERNMENT

Changing of guard for Albas I am honoured to be named as the official opposition Shadow Minister for Environment DAN ALBAS & Climate VIEW FROM Change under the THE HILL leadership of our new leader, the Honourable Erin O’Toole. Living in the Okanagan region of British Columbia over the past decade, we have all witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of climate change. The “once in 200 year” flood has come and gone twice in recent years. It is not uncommon to see temperature records being broken. The added heat and tinder dry forests create wildfires of a size and scope rarely before seen. Conditions can become so severe that air quality is seriously compromised. There are also other important challenges. We know there are regions in Canada where raw sewage is still discharged into sensitive marine habitats. We also know that many vulnerable species are at risk. The ongoing threat of invasive aquatic species to our freshwater lakes, particularly here in the Okanagan, is a serious problem. All of these challenges require federal leadership as well as partnerships with provincial and local governments as well as First Nation communities. I am also looking forward to working with Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. While there are some seriously significant underperformers at Prime Minister Trudeau’s

America and the democratic system “To lose one parent...may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness,” wrote Oscar Wilde in his play ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ in 1895. GWYNNE DYER In somewhat the THE WORLD same spirit, British STAGE journalist Robert Fisk wrote last week “At some point in the next two months we are going to have to decide whether we absolve the American people if they re-elect Donald Trump.” Losing one election to Trump is unlucky; losing two in a row may be saying something about the national character. Fisk has been Middle East correspondent of various British newspapers since 1976, so he was not on familiar ground when he wrote that about the United States in ‘The Independent’ last Friday. On the other hand, he was expressing a mostly unspoken but widespread attitude among all Europeans except the extreme right. Let me quote some more: “Like all snobs, we’ve taken the view that Trump did not really represent American

values – any more than the Arab dictators reflect the views of their people. We’ve hoped and prayed and fooled ourselves into believing this was only a temporary autocracy, a deviation, an old and reliable friend suffering from a serious but ultimately curable mental disease. “Yet...I wonder how we are going to react to Americans if the Trump years become the Trump era; or if his dreadful, ambitious family transform themselves into the Trump Caliphate....if the America we felt we could always ultimately rely on – once they’ve straightened out their little Trump misadventure – turns into the nation we can never trust?” I grew up in Canada, and Canadians, like Mexicans, while fond enough of individual Americans, are by nature mistrustful of the American state – “like sleeping with an elephant,” as Pierre Elliott Trudeau put it. If it just rolls over or wakes up cranky, you can get badly hurt. Europeans have a different perspective. Bob Fisk grew up in the United Kingdom, which like France remembers (most of the time) that it would have lost both world wars without American help. Even if the United States was years late to both world wars, it showed up both times in time to save the day.

And American troops stayed in Western Europe to protect it from Soviet power throughout the Cold War. Most Eastern Europeans see the United States as the instrument of their liberation from the Soviet Union, even though it did not in the end involve a hot war. So there is still a deep well of respect and trust for the United States in Europe. Fisk is probably right that a second Trump election victory would finally poison that well, which would be a pity. Another four years would also see him complete the destruction of the existing international order (without giving a single thought to a replacement). Trump is, as Michael Moore noted in 2016, “a wretched, ignorant, dangerous part-time clown and full-time sociopath.” But would two terms of Trump mean the end of American democracy? Not necessarily. Not even likely. What Trump has triggered – and somebody was bound to trigger it around now, because every political niche, like every evolutionary niche, is always filled – is a final reckoning on the ‘race problem’, about 150 years after the American Civil War. At the time of the Civil War (1861-65),

UNEMPLOYED INVITED TO LEARN GRADING Any unemployed worker in the sawmill industry is invited to attend a night school course on lumber grading. These courses are designed to give students a background knowledge in theory and practical grading. A good knowledge of lumber grading has become necessary in most sawmill jobs as grading has become more important in recent years. The Merritt course will run until Christmas, with review classes and examinations taking place in January. The courses are sponsored by the Interior Lumber Manufacturers’ Association. The regular fees for this course will be waived for unemployed persons.

November election telling New challenges of American people await local MP From Page 6 black Americans accounted for around 12% of the total population, and four-fifths of them were slaves. Whites accounted for almost all the rest; only a quartermillion were Native Americans. ‘African-Americans’ still account for the same 12% share of the population today, and many of them are still victims of the same white fear, exclusion and official violence that their ancestors experienced (mainly because they were slaves) 150 years ago. But since US immigration law changed in 1965, allow-

ing people from the entire world to immigrate, the ‘non-Hispanic white share’ of the population has dropped to only 60%. That share will to drop to 50% by 2044, according to forecasts based on current birth rates and immigration trends. This has triggered a huge panic among working-class white Americans, who often compete for the same jobs and used to depend on their whiteness as a competitive advantage. Trump is personally a racist, if his remarks and behaviour are any guide, but he is a cynical populist and would be exploit-

ing white fears right now even if he really loved non-white Americans. That is why the vicious legacy of the Civil War, which ended slavery but not white privilege, is finally being dragged out into the open. Having been so exposed, it will probably finally be extinguished – but not necessarily in time to thwart Trump’s reelection. This is not the end of the United States, nor the advent of a new Hitler either. It is a necessary evolution of American history, for which some people living elsewhere may also pay a substantial price.

Market Goes Garlic this weekend Morgan Hampton LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER

In an attempt to support garlic farmers, encourage local food and provide a fun, family-friendly and pandemic safe event, the Nicola Valley Farmers’ Market has organized ‘The Market Goes Garlic’, which will take place Sept. 12 and 13. “The Market Goes Garlic is a promotional market,” said Garrett Grimshire, President of the Nicola Valley Farmers’ Market. “I’m not sure how many people are aware of it, but there are actually quite a few garlic farms around the Nicola Valley, and going all the way out to Lytton. So, we’ve got out quite a few garlic vendors from our local area, as well as we have several coming from the Okanagan, as well as others from different areas in BC for the weekend.” Due to the COVID19 pandemic and restrictions surrounding large gatherings of people, Garlic Festivals, which have become immensely popular multi-day events across the province, have been cancelled. This has left many garlic farmers with fewer avenues to sell their harvest. “With the garlic festivals not happening this year, we really wanted to make sure these farms had an outlet for their product, so that was what got the ball rolling,” said Grimshire. “Along the way I reached out to several

other markets around BC and we ended up building a seven or eight market circuit for a lot of vendors. There’s been a pretty great response from different farmers’ markets, as well as vendors.” Garlic-themed markets have taken place in 100 Mile House, Enderby, Clearwater and several other locations that would usually host a Garlic Festival. Normally, Merrittonians are treated to two-days of garlic, produce, live entertainment and crafter and artisan offerings at the Lower Nicola Garlic Fest, an annual event. To fill that void ‘Market Goes Garlic’ will be a two-day farmers’ market which will see vendors set up on Quilchena from 9:30a.m. to 4:00p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. “In this day and age and the challenges we’re all faced with, you never really know how it’s going to go, but definitely we recognize that the community is craving it, with no

events happening all season long,” said acting president of the Merritt and District Chamber of Commerce Ryan Wuthe. Chamber members will also be on hand volunteering, assisting with appropriate social distancing and PPE. “We definitely plan on supporting it, hoping to drive some people downtown to support local business and downtown shopping,” said Wuthe. “We’ll be volunteering, helping with the overall layout process, and we’re working with the City on the COVID safety plans. We hope we can accomplish this safely, and if it all works out maybe we continue on with the market with some other events.” Even if you aren’t a fan of garlic, or don’t have any nearby vampires to ward off, both Wuthe and Grimshire encourage people to come down and enjoy the event, using the opportunity to safely support vendors and downtown businesses. “For the farmers’

market, aside from the garlic we’re going into the harvest season so I know a lot of the garlic vendors are also planning on bringing tons of produce, so there will be a lot available in that area,” said Grimshire.

Hog pile up in flames again

Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

For the second time in just under a month, the hog pile at the old Tolko grounds where

Merritt Green Energy is located went up in flames last week. Around a dozen firefighters from the local fire department responded to the early

evening blaze, having it under control by late in the evening and smouldering by the morning. The pile had previously ignited on Aug.

12, with firefighters working throughout the night to douse the flames. Photos submitted by Joanne Woods.

Indigenous justice centre in Merritt Morgan Hampton LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER

The province has partnered with the BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC) to create Indigenous justice centres throughout BC with the intention of improving access to supports and helping individuals navigate the justice system more easily. Indigenous justice centres have recently opened in Prince George, Prince Rupert and Merritt. “For too long, Indigenous peoples have been over-represented in our criminal justice system,” said David Eby, Attorney General. “Our Indigenous Justice Strategy, authored in partnership with Indigenous peoples, emphasizes the importance of these new centres as a first step along that path, offering culturally appropriate supports to ensure better outcomes for everyone.” While each centre will offer unique support services tailored

to the local Indigenous community, each location will offer access to: - legal advice and representation for criminal and child protection matters; - advocacy and support in dealing with agencies such as the police and Ministry of Children and Family Development; - referrals to relevant agencies and services such as counselling or employment support; - information towards better transitions from jail and integration into the community; and - restorative justice options to better support and address the needs of those impacted by a crime. BCFNJC plans to develop as many as 15 centres throughout the province, and is currently working with the government of BC to determine those locations. These centres are part of the larger First Nations Justice Strategy, which was launched in March of this year. “The Indigenous

Justice Centre in Merritt represents two First Nations coming together, Syilx and Nlaka’pamux, to serve all Indigenous peoples in the Nicola Valley,” said Brian Holmes, Nicola Valley Community Justice Services Society presi-

dent. “We work with Elders from every community, and we will rely on their guidance to address priorities such as working closely with Corrections Services to support transitions to home communities.”

JUNIOR HOCKEY

New recruits as Cents camp wraps up Fall camp saw the Cents roster drop by about half as the season draws close.

Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

And then there were forty. The finale of the Merritt Centennials fall evaluation camp this week saw the number of hopeful players cut more than in half, from 90 prospects down to 40, as staff looks to fine tune the roster for the upcoming 2020-21 BCHL season. Head Coach Derek Sweet-Coulter said he was “really proud” of all of the prospects that put in the work. “They were good people at the rink, and in the town...it’s just great to see kids back in Merritt. Hockey is upon us, it’s great.” It was four days of evaluating players and goalies in all different situations, from drills, to three-on-threes, and four-on-fours. The action wrapped up on Thursday. “When the level gets

higher, some kids they drop off, and some kids excelled,” said SweetCoulter after the last day of camp. “And we’re pleased to announce that we’ve committed to a few guys out of here.” A pair of standout names that emerged from the evaluation camp were that of Josh Olson and Nolan Wall, both forwards that will be hoping to get in their first full seasons in British Columbia’s top minor junior league. Olson, who will be nineteen this month, brings with him experience with four different junior hockey teams in his short junior career, starting with a short two-game stint with the Revelstoke Grizzlies of the KIJHL in the 201617 season. From there, he spent time with the Princeton Posse and Sicamous Eagles of the same league, and even found himself in a total of six games between two seasons with the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Sweet-Coulter said in a release that Olson was a “heavy player, physical, and (with) good skills.” Wall, who just

turned eighteen in August, hails from the Under-18 Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, though he spent eight games in the BCHL with the Coquitlam Express last season. Though not all of the returning players from last season were at the camp, Sweet-Coulter said about six or seven were on the ice throughout the week. He was happy with their performance, seem-

ingly on and off the ice. “They’re tasked with leading our culture, and I couldn’t be more happy with them this week. Team building, to the onice, leading the stretches, just getting the guys feeling comfortable here in Merritt. “These camps are about introducing everyone to our program, and what we’re about. How we play on the ice, how we act off the ice, and

we’re blessed with guys like (defenseman) Talon Zakall and (forward) Ben Ward...these guys have been here for a while, and they understand the culture we are trying to build. Family first, then let’s go to work for each other, and let’s go and do things the right way.” Zakall has been a key cog to the Centennial blue line for the past two seasons, breaking out with a 30-point

campaign last year. The Kamloops-born Ward is also entering his second year as a Cent, skating in 41 games last season. As for remaining roster cuts, the 40 players left on the staff ’s list have a better chance of making that final list than in year’s past: this year, the BCHL has upped the roster limit to 25. However, SweetCoulter said that by the end-of-day on the last

day of the evaluation camp, staff had most likely chosen their 25. Five more spots are yet to be determined to fill in as affiliate players, which in theory brings the roster up to 30. “All in all, a successful camp, and can’t wait to get on the ice with this group in a couple weeks.” The team is looking to have the final roster ready by mid-September.

OLD SCHOOL: The Nicola Valley Skating Club eased back onto the ice with 80s and beach-themed days in their first few days back skating. The figure skating program begins this week, while the AGM will be held this Thursday at Rotary Park. Photo submitted

Jamara Joyal is the face, and the hands, behind Jamara Joyal Massage Therapy. Joyal graduated from the 3-year program at the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy in 2009. Shortly after graduation Joyal moved to Merritt, where she has now been in practice for a decade, after beginning to take on patients in March of 2010. According to HealthLink BC, there are at least 80 types of massage. Massage is defined as the rubbing and manipulation of soft tissues, such as muscles, in order to stimulate blood f low, reduce tension and pain and promote relaxation. Massage therapists may provide active (intense) or passive (gentle) massages, using their hands, forearms, elbows or even feet.

Joyal was drawn to massage therapy as it is a career that gives her the opportunity to help others. I believe that there is always a way to reduce pain and improve your quality of life,” said Joyal. “Massage therapy is an amazing treatment option to help people improve a person’s health and reduce pain.” Joyal helps people from all walks of life. From those recovering from workplace or vehicle accidents, to stressed moms and students, or those simply seeking to reduce chronic pain. “Massage therapy can treat many injuries and conditions as well as many ages,” said Joyal. “I have treated children, teenagers, seniors and pregnant women.” Joyal’s oldest patient so far was 98,

and her youngest patient was only three months at the time of treatment. “I hope to bring health and wellness education,” explained Joyal about the goal for her practice. “Providing treatment so that a person can improve their quality of life by reducing pain from injuries through massage therapy. I want people to know they don’t have to ‘deal with’ the pain they have. There are options and treatment.” Treatments are very patient specific, and range from $55 to $107. However, Joyal encourages her patients to check their extended medical for coverage and also notes that certain MSP beneficiaries are eligible to receive $23 per visit for an annual limit of 10 visits each calendar year. Joyal also sells health and wellness products such as ConcenTrace, an electrolyte supplement and Ortho Flex, a muscle and joint ointment. Although stiffness and soreness are often aff lictions that lead people to seek out a massage therapist, Joyal uses massage to treat a wide variety of ailments. “Common issues massage therapy can

also help with are headaches, sprains, strains, muscle spasm, post-surgery scar tissue, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, plantar fasciitis and many more,” said Joyal. In some cases, a person may stop treatment because they have reached a point of recovery where they are no longer in pain. In other instances, a patient may feel less pain and an improved sense of wellness between treatments. For Joyal, this is the goal, and her favourite part of what she does.

continuing education. “In BC, a student must complete a 2-year Registered Massage Therapy program, and the college must be one recognized by the College of Massage Therapists of BC,” explained Joyal.

“By far my favourite part is when I see the progress a patient has made with treatment and how happy they are to move without pain, or to not have had any headaches since the last treatment,” said Joyal. “I find it very rewarding.” Becoming a massage therapist is quite an undertaking, with several years of schooling required, as well as a commitment to

You can focus your massage therapy practice to what you’re most interested in.
