Merritt shows support for Broncos Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Students at Merritt Central Elementary honoured the Humboldt Broncos hockey team with a “jersey day” on April 12. They’ve joined Canadians from across the country — and many groups in Merritt — to show support for the Humboldt community after the local hockey team was involved in a bus crash on their way to a playoff game in Nipawin. Individuals and communities from across the country have shown support for the victims and families of the junior hockey team in a variety of ways. Jersey day is one such initiative. Kriss Morel, education assistant at Merritt Central Elementary School, said the accident has been a hot topic at the school. “There’s been lots of conversation with teachers and kids. There’s also been a ton of support offered from the district for students and staff who need it,” she said. She told the Herald the school decided to take part in jersey day to join others in showing support for the victims and their families. Martha Chillihitzia, a First Nations support worker at Merritt Central Elementary, made sure everyone could be included with jersey day at the school. She made ‘Broncos’ name bars for all the students to attach to the back of their shirts. Chillihitzia told the Herald that students, even in the younger grades, have been engaged in the conversation. “I went into a Grade 4 class. They talked about it — they talked about how truck drivers do get tired and lots of speculation about how it could have happened. They’re also following the news,” she said. “It’s just a very unfortunate thing that happened and it hit everyone,” she added. Morel explained she has an 18-year-old son and the conversations they’ve had about the accident haven’t been easy. “It really hits home — they’re devastating conversations at our house about how that could be their friend group and how tragic it

must be for those people and those families,” she said. Chillihitzia explained she was a hockey mom, and now grandma herself. “My son finished hockey fifteen years ago, but we’re still one family,” she said. “Travelling down treacherous roads — I remember car pooling and somebody would have to lead the way and we’d all follow behind and the roads were so bad,” she said. “Now he’s got a hockey family, and it just hit home how close the hockey team is and how it can all change in an instant.” Chillihitzia and Morel echoed a hope that the jersey day gesture shows support. “We just want the Humboldt Broncos to know that we are also a

small community, and how everyone here pulled together to support them,” Chillihitzia said. “When I personally look at the big picture I see that the heartfelt message is so unreal that families and friends feel so supported by the whole world right now,” said Morel. A number of players and coaches in the Merritt Centennials organization had connections to the Humboldt Broncos team. Cents’ head coach and GM Joe Martin shared a good relationship with Broncos’ head coach Darcy Haugan. “I used to talk with Darcy quite a bit about a decade ago, or 11 or 12 years ago before I came here,” said Martin. “Since he moved to Humboldt, I talked to him a

couple times a year.” Haugan was one of the 16 people who died in the crash. The crash hits home for the Merritt junior A team, which travels by bus to every away game during the season. “Three hundred buses in North America taking athletes around in one sport — it could happen anywhere,” said Martin. The Centennials organization will be raffling off one final mental health jersey, with the funds going to support the Humboldt Broncos team. Tickets can be purchased by donation at the Cents marketing office at 2001C Voght Street. The hockey club is also collecting donations for the Broncos on behalf of community groups and businesses.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS UPPER NICOLA

Band one step closer to solar Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

A major solar farm is one step closer to becoming a reality in the Nicola Valley, after the membership of the Upper Nicola Band voted in favour of designating 400 acres of reserve land for development. But there are still hurdles to clear before the project is a definite go, explained Peter Hilton, a senior executive with the Upper Nicola Band. Band members vote overwhelmingly in favour of the land designation, with 172 of 186 votes cast in favour of opening the land to development, which would allow the band’s development corporation to enter into a 99-year lease agreement on the parcel to construct the project. Asked what prompted such a landslide, Hilton said there are many aspects of the project which appeal to the band membership. “It’s going to be on reserve, it’s going to produce jobs, it’s going to be a lot of pride for the community,” he said. “People see the benefits and would like to see it move ahead if we can.“ He also credited the Upper Nicola administration with a well-run information process which engaged many members of the band. While the land designation was an important step in the process towards building the solar farm — slated to occupy 200-acres of the designated parcel — there are more steps to clear before shovels can hit the ground, said Hilton. A device called a pyranometer has been installed on the land since last fall. The device collects data on the level of solar irradiance on a given site, which helps inform power generation projections for FortisBC. “We have to make

Upper Nicola Chief Harvey McLeod showed B.C. Premier John Horgan the preliminary designs for the 200-acre solar farm slated to be built on reserve land. Photo contributed

sure we have the resource we think we do, and at the moment, we’re still good,” said Hilton. Once the site’s solar potential has been confirmed, the band will have to negotiate on a final price with BC Hydro, as the power generated will be sold back to the Crown corporation. “We have a commitment from BC Hydro that they’re going to buy the energy from us, but we have to negotiate the final price,” said Hilton. “Of course it has to be high enough for us to build the proj-

ect and for us to make a profit.” He expects the band to make a final investment decision on the $30 million project in November or December. The referendum’s results produced a wave of emotions for Upper Nicola Chief Harvey McLeod. “This community is moving forward and really looking for opportunities with our people, and at the same time, walking the talk of clean energy and green energy,” said McLeod. He added that the referendum was the

culmination of a project which was first started by the band more than a decade ago. There was special significance to the timing of the decision, said McLeod, who noted that the band is pursuing a clean energy project while a debate over the Kinder Morgan pipeline rages at the provincial and federal level. The chief took a moment during a ceremony on Monday to reflect on the proximity of the proposed solar farm, and the existing Trans Mountain pipeline.

“Standing there, and looking at the land, and looking across the lake to where the pipeline is, I was saying, ‘How significant is that?’” said McLeod. “On our reserve we are introducing sources of energy that are 21st century and I’m looking across the lake and I’m looking at 19th century sources of energy.” Once complete, the solar farm would comprise of 56,000 solar panels on 200 acres of land on the band’s Quilchena reserve near Nicola Lake. Since the parcel designated by the band is 400 acres total, another 200 acres will be reserved for future developments, explained Teri Clayton, land manager for the Upper Nicola Band. Of 790 eligible voters, 186 ballots were cast in the referendum on April 16. 172 voted in favour of the referendum, while 12 voted against. Two ballots were rejected. In comparison, 282 ballots were cast in the band’s election for chief and council on March 19, 2017.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Perspective on pipelines For those who follow Canadian politics closely, all eyes were focused on Ottawa DAN ALBAS View from the last Sunday for HILL a summit meeting hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with Alberta and B.C. premiers Rachel Notley and John Horgan. The topic of the meeting was the growing dispute between Ottawa, British Columbia and Alberta over the construction of Trans Mountain pipeline. The media headlines that followed this meeting were candid. “Trudeau has failed to resolve pipeline crises” and more recently “Kinder Morgan project a test of Trudeau’s competency, puts his 18 B.C. seats at risk, say pollsters.” While this is occurring, prime minister Trudeau has remained firm in his statement that the Trans Mountain pipeline will be built. From my time on the government side of the house, it is my opinion that media headlines are not always fair to elected officials. The expectation that Mr. Trudeau could resolve this pipeline stand off in a single meeting are overly optimistic and more so when you consider both provincial NDP premiers benefit politically from their respective positions. From a political perspective, the real challenge for the orime minister, who is in a situation of his own making, is whatever actions he ultimately makes will come at a steep political cost to the federal Liberals. The prime minister is also well aware of this fact.

Indeed, the Russians, Bashar al-Assad’s faithful ally, maintain that the attack did not even happen. Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to the site of the alleged attack as early as Tuesday. But Trump saw the footage on Fox News, and he was determined to punish the evil ones. And he did act, although his actions were not exactly ‘the terrors of the Earth.’ The missile strike, according to the U.S. defence secretary, General James Mattis, involved “double” the number of missiles that were used in last year’s similar attack. So that’s around 120 Tomahawk cruise missiles, costing around $100 million, delivered on three or four targets that were almost certainly evacuated last weekend. There were also a few smaller missiles, delivered by British or French aircraft that tagged along after the Americans. They probably came within range of the Russian S-400 air defence system, by general assent the best in the world, but there was no risk of their being shot down. The Russians didn’t turn their system on. It was a big enough attack to re-arrange the landscape around the alleged “chemical weapons-type targets”, even if Syrian anti-aircraft fire shot down a few of the unmanned missiles (as the Syrians claim). Essentially, however, it was a pantomime event designed to impress a

small and unsophisticated audience: Donald J. Trump. It would appear that the grown-ups really are still in charge in the White House. They couldn’t actually disobey orders, but they could arrange things so that nobody got seriously hurt. They specifically chose targets that would “mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved,” and the Syrians obviously had time to get their people out of the likely targets too. The United States even warned the Russians to clear the airspace along the tracks the missiles would follow, so that there would be no accidental encounters with Russian (or Syrian) aircraft. “We used the normal deconfliction channel to deconflict airspace,” explained the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Joseph Dunford. And the Russians obligingly turned off their air defences, since the Western attacks weren’t going to do any serious harm anyway. President Trump did say that “We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents,” but that is a perfectly meaningless commitment since Syria is not using them now.

OPINION Fears about a new Cold War are overblown

From the Herald archives: April 17, 1991

GILLIS HOUSE READY AT LAST

From Page 6 If it did use them, it has already stopped. As General Mattis said: “Right now, this is a one-time shot.” So move along, folks. Nothing more to see here. And spare us all the talk (most recently by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres) about a ‘new Cold War’. There can’t be a new Cold War, because the Russians don’t have the resources to hold up their end of it. The Russian Federation has half the population of the old Soviet Union, and its economy is about the same size as Italy’s. If Italy spent its budget the way Russia does, it too could have big conventional forces and a nuclear striking force big enough to deter even the United States from attacking it — but it could not sustain a global military confrontation with the NATO powers for even one year. Neither could Russia.

‘‘

‘The Russian Federation has half the population of the old Soviet Union and its economy is about the same size as Italy’s.’

Moscow only commits its forces to areas that really threaten its security (or at least appeal to its own sometimes paranoid definition of what constitutes a security threat). Syria is quite close to Russia, whose own population is more than one-tenth Muslim, so Moscow was unwilling to let Islamist extremists win the Syrian civil war, and in September 2015 it intervened to stop them. The Russia intervention in Syria has been almost entirely successful: Bashar al-Assad has won the war, and already controls all the big cities and most of the country’s ‘useful’ land. The Washington foreign policy establishment hates this outcome, but it never had a plausible alternative to peddle, nor (after Afghanistan and Iraq) was there the political will in the United States for a major military intervention in Syria. The Syrian war will end in a year or two, and fleabites like this week’s air strikes will have no influence on the outcome. And Moscow will stop there: it has no further ambitions in the Middle East. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Eyes on New Brunswick From Page 6 Rather than take any decisive action, has suggested he may ultimately work with the project proponent, Kinder Morgan, to mitigate investor risk in the Trans Mountain project. Although no formal announcement has been made, I am already hearing strong opposition from some Canadians at the thought of throwing, and I will quote directly, “public money into the coffers of an oil giant.” Meanwhile, Alberta continues to move forward a bill in their provincial legislature that could limit the supply of Alberta gasoline to British Columbia. A move that the premier of Saskatchewan has also voiced support for. In B.C., the NDP government has called Alberta’s threat a “bluff ” and remains

committed that they will not change their position. What happens next? At this point, it is all speculation and rather than engage in ‘what

be rendered later this week. Many will know that for decades provinces have prohibited the inter-provincial direct consumer shipping of

‘‘

if ’ scenarios, I will provide a factual update when more information is available. While the debate on potentially restricting oil flow between two provinces rages on, one subject that has my full attention is the upcoming decision by our Supreme Court on the Comeau case. This decision should

alcohol over provincial borders. In fact, there are many items and even services that face similar restrictions that amount to interprovincial trade protectionism. In the last parliament, I had a bill passed that removed the federal government from some of these

restrictions but only a handful of provinces followed suit. Ultimately this led to the Comeau case that came before the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC). The Comeau case argues in favour of section 121 of our Charter: “All Articles of the Growth, Produce, or Manufacture of any one of the Provinces shall, from and after the Union, be admitted free into each of the other Provinces.” In the event the SCC rules in favour of this definition, it could potentially create significant new opportunities for many local industries and producers to access important new markets in Canada. “I have a wish list for this facility. I wish for laughter at all times. I wish for music and singing to raise the joy of the residents. I wish the door always be open to children. And I suggest a pet or two, to warm the laps and the hearts of all residents.” Those were the words of Dr. Jack Gillis during Saturday’s opening ceremony of Gillis House — Merritt’s new extended care facility which was named after his father Dr. J.J. Gillis and uncle Austin Gillis. The Merritt winds blew strongly during the opening ceremonies which were held outside the new building in the bright spring sunshine. Residents of Coquihalla House, which is adjacent to Gillis House, were brought outside and they joined about 300 visitors and guests who dropped by to witness the ribbon cutting ceremony and tour through the 25-bed extended care home.

APRIL IS ORAL HEALTH MONTH

Tips to Keep Your Teeth Healthy Keep Your Mouth Clean - brush your teeth at least twice a day and use floss. Floss helps to remove food and plaque which gets lodged or forms between the teeth and gums. Flossing helps to reduce bad breath and gum disease. Using a mouthwash can help reduce plaque from forming, reduces infection and eliminates bad breath. Eat, Drink But Be Wary - healthy, unprocessed nutrient rich foods help the body fight any infection. Reduce sugar intake. Sugar is a major cause of dental problems. It’s advised to brush your teeth after consuming sugary drinks and food. Check Your Mouth Regularly - gum disease (periodontal disease) is the most common cause of tooth loss. Warning signs include bad breath, sensitive gums which are red, sore, shiny or swollen, and gums which

bleed after brushing or flossing. Check also for the warning signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer normally occurs on the sides of the mouth, on the floor of the mouth and on the lower side of the tongue. Oral Cancer Warning Signs Include: small lumps or thickened areas in the mouth, red or white patches in the mouth, a feeling of tingling or numbness in the mouth, bleeding in the mouth with no obvious cause, sores in the mouth which do not heal Avoid All Tobacco Products - using tobacco (chewing or smoking) can cause minor and major oral health problems. Minor problems include bad breath and teeth staining. Major problems include heart disease, oral cancer and other cancers.

Though the plant is now generating power and selling it back to BC Hydro, there are a few repairs left for Iberdrola Energy Projects Canada to make before the plant can be considered fully operational, explained John Turner, vice president of operations for Veolia North America — one half of the companies financing the project. “There are still a few things that are going to take a little bit longer to sort out,” said Turner. “And things [that] are going to need the boiler to go down to sort out.” Once Iberdrola has completed their construction obligations, the keys to the facility will be turned over to a company responsible for operating the plant;

The Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club is heading back to court in an effort to stop a suspected land swap that would block public access to a sport fishing lake east of Merritt. The club is suing Corbett Lake Lodge, Douglas Lake Cattle Company and the province of British Columbia for allegedly blocking public access to Corbett Lake. The club alleges public access exists via the highway right-ofway of the Okanagan Connector that extends into a portion of the lake. According to court documents, the club claims that since 2005, the lodge, ranch and Crown have conspired to block the public access to the lake through various actions. These actions include constructing a large berm on the highway right-of-way, erecting an eight-foot fence, posting noparking signs along the side of

the highway, causing RCMP to apprehend people fishing on the lake and attempting to convert a portion of Crown land on the highway right-of-way to private land by gifting it to Douglas Lake Ranch. Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club lawyer Chris Harvey told KTW the land swap is only suspected to be happening at this point and he believes litigation should stop such an occurrence.

“There may not be a land swap,” he said. The club is seeking a declaration that the public right-of-way exists and that the lake and fishery are public, as well. The club is also seeking an injunction to restrain the lodge, ranch and Crown from interfering with the public’s right to access the lake.

Local Crime Stoppers chapter celebrates success T According to Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore, the local Crime Stoppers chapter is paying off in the community. “We had a fairly good year last year as far as Crime Stoppers and tips received,” she said. The organization, which has operated in town for nearly a decade, receives crime tips via anonymous submissions from members of the public. In Merritt, people can provide an anonymous crime tip by calling 1-800-2228477. The tip is then passed along to Merritt RCMP. If the information leads to an arrest, ends up helping to recover property or closes a case, tipsters can receive cash — usually between $100 and $2,000 depending on the quality of the information and

the seriousness of the crime. Dunsmore reported their chapter has received approximately 400 tips over the years, and has paid out roughly $5,000 total in rewards. Furthermore, approximately $50,000 worth of property, drugs and weapons has

been recovered. “I would say that’s a plus for Crime Stoppers,” she said. Local chapter president Graham Whitecross recently received the president’s award for his years of dedication to the organization. “I was deeply

touched — I didn’t see it coming,” he said. He told the Herald he believes the program is beneficial to the community. “We feel it’s quite an asset to the town,” he said. “It’s one more step to help eliminate petty theft and crime here,” he said.

EARTH DAY

APRIL 22, 2018 Did you know, that connecting with others and our natural environment is a very important way to lift our spirits? This years Earth Day theme is Consume Less, Play More! Sounds great, right? So what does this mean and what can we do to make this happen? It all starts with us! As humans, it is our responsibility to make sure we respect our earth and teach our children to do so as well, so that our future generations have a fighting chance to live and breathe clean air, have clean water and good soil for growing food. One of the Earth Day Organizations is quoted as saying: “From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.” How can we teach our children about this so they can carry on making the Earth a cleaner, safer place to live and grow? Here are some ideas! Continued on page 20

MAKE

EARTH DAY

APRIL 22, 2018 Continued from page 19 • Teach children about how amazing the earth is and how important it is to our future that we respect it. • Teach about how important it is to recycle and how to do it properly. Lead by example. • Teach about how fun it is to grow your own food. Garden with them and start growing food from a seed. It is always so exciting for children when they see a beautiful fruit or vegetable that has been grown in their care. • When you are outdoors, verbalize how awesome it is to breathe fresh air, touch clean water and run your fingers through clean earth. • Teach how to respect animals and how plastics can harm them as well. Plastic pollution and its threat to nature and human health is a pressing concern. Reducing consumption is a moral imperative .
