TRANS MOUNTAIN

Alternate route for TMX through Nicola Valley approved

Serving Merritt with Excellence for over 28 yrs

The Trans Mountain project and the Coldwater Indian Band have been butting heads about the pipeline moving through local land for a long time.

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM n alternate route for the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) Project through the Nicola Valley was approved by the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) on July 19. This followed an application by Trans Mountain late last year for a variance that would change the pipeline’s already approved path for a new course, known as the West Alternate Route. The West Alternate Route was put forward as a more preferable route by the Coldwater Indian Band, who had raised concerns about the original route potentially causing damage to the Coldwater Reserve aquifer, the only source of drinking water for the community of approximately 320 people. “For us water is life,” said Coldwater Chief Lee Spahan. “We continue to do everything in our power to ensure our sole source of drinking water is protected from the Trans Mountain Expansion Project.” For Spahan, this included joining with the Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish nations, as well as a collection of Sto:lo nation bands and presenting their argument to the Federal Court of Appeal. This appeal was

rejected, as was a subsequent appeal made to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Following a series of hearings by landowners, First Nations and local governments, the revised route was approved. “We are pleased that the Canada Energy Regulator issued its decision to approve Trans Mountain’s variance application for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project route through the Coldwater Valley in B.C.” said a spokesperson for Trans

Mountain. “We continue to engage with Coldwater and have productive conversations regarding our Expansion Project.” Although the West Alternate Route will bypass Coldwater’s water aquifer and alleviate the Band’s fears for their drinking water, some in the area have raised concerns about the environmental impact that the new route will have, as it adds roughly four kilometres to the route, and necessitates two separate crossings of the Coldwater River where none were needed before. In response to those concerns, Trans Mountain assured that they are doing all that they can to ensure minimal environmental impact. “As with every part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, extensive work was undertaken to determine environmental impacts and mitigation measures to reduce those impacts,” said Trans Mountain. “Our goal is always to protect the environment, have as little impact as possible and, where we do have an impact, ensure we return the land to its previous state.” Chief Spahan did not respond to requests for comment on the West Alternate Route.

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD. COM The Nicola Valley Museum and Archives have newly welcomed Cameron Bridge to the position of Manager, a role he took on in April of this year. Bridge was born and raised in Kelowna, where he attended a French immersion school before making his way to Alberta, where he received a Degree in History from the University of Calgary. Shortly after he returned home to the Okanagan and looked to expand his knowledge of history

with a museum position. But what inspired Bridge’s passion for the past? “I was fortunate enough when I was in high school to go on a trip to Europe through my school where we got to tour the First and Second World War battle sites,” explained Bridge. “I’d always enjoyed history, there’s just something about learning about the ways of the past and how people lived that always intrigued me, but going out there and seeing that led me to wanting to work in history as a full-time career.”

New Museum Manager a ‘jack of all trades’ Following a prolonged closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bridge said the most difficult aspect of running the Museum is getting the word out that it has now reopened, and that along with this reopening comes new hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Not being centrally located, Bridge also hopes to widely share the Museum’s address of 1675 Tutill Ct. to tourists and visitors. Bridge hopes to see Museum visits continue to increase, and is looking forward to interacting with more visiting Merrittonians as time goes by.

The opportunity to put his history degree to work in his preferred field came by way of the Manager position at Nicola Valley Museum and Archives becoming available. Despite not knowing much about the community, Bridge accepted the position and made himself a Merrittonian. “It’s quite a nice community,” said Bridge. In his role as Manager, Bridge is something of a jack of all trades, being responsible for the day-to-day operations of the museum, including greeting people and answering questions, as well as putting together and maintaining displays, working on museum projects and liaising with the Board. Although he has been impressed by the displays, with the General Store possibly ranking as his favourite amongst the permanent exhibits, Bridge recognizes that museums can sometimes become stagnant. In some cases, people may visit and not find that much has changed, something Bridge wants to combat by changing things up now and then. “One of the things that I wanted to do when I came here was work on a rotating display, just as a way to not only talk about the some of the smaller aspects of Merritt’s history that are interesting but maybe don’t warrant a full display like the General Store or the hospital would, but also to entice people to come back here more often,” explained Bridge. Upon his arrival, Bridge put together an exhibit on the Spanish Flu, which ravaged the Nicola Valley more than a century ago. Bridge felt this was a timely topic due to the fact that it was BC’s last major pandemic before we were abruptly thrust into the COVID-19 pandemic early in 2020. “One of the other things that I’ve been working on that’s new, besides the rotating display, is doing a write up on our Facebook page on an aspect of Merritt’s history. “So, for example, recently I did a write up on the life of Jesus Garcia, the namesake of Garcia Ave., the history of the City Brass Band formed in 1910, the history of swimming pools in Merritt, the history of Chrissie Aitken who was a Merrittonian who survived the sinking of the Lusitania, etc.” Bridge also made an exploratory visit to Princeton to view a travelling exhibit they have onsite, ‘Gold Mountain Dream!’ By The Royal BC Museum, and while the Merritt museum doesn’t currently have the space for travelling exhibits, it is something that could possibly be considered in the future. “It could be in the cards in terms of a long-term plan, but definitely not short term.”

GOVERNMENT

ALBAS: Will there be an election?

If you follow the rumours out of Ottawa, it has been reported that the Prime Minister will request DAN ALBAS our new VIEW FROM Governor THE HILL General, Mary Simon, dissolve Parliament and call an election. If that were the case this would be my final weekly MP report to you as it would be inappropriate to distribute weekly reports as a political candidate as opposed to being an elected official. Will there be an election? From my perspective I believe public safety must come first. As many regions of Canada are reporting an increase in COVID outbreaks related to the Delta variant, an election call would carry serious risk for a sitting Prime Minister, even in a minority Parliament. The leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, wrote to the Governor General to ask that a request to grant an election from the Prime Minister not be granted. The leader of the NDP has further pointed out that the minority Liberal Government has never once failed a confidence vote in the House of Commons that would trigger an election. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has argued that both the Conservative and NDP opposiSee ‘PUBLIC’ Page 7 tion parties

LETTERS to the editor

Recent heat wave a cause for concern Editor, It’s hard not to feel bad for those in the many bone-dry-vegetation areas worldwide uncontrollably burning and the many other dry regions soon to follow suit. As a lifelong resident of southwestern B.C., the unprecedented heatwave here in late June, described by meteorologists as more of a ‘stalling heat dome’, left me feeling I could never again complain about the weather being too cold. I find that collective human existence has for too long been analogous to a cafeteria lineup consisting of diversely societally represented people, all adamantly arguing over which identifiable person should be at the front and, conversely, at the back of the line. Many of them further fight over to whom amongst them should go the last piece of

quality pie and how much they should have to pay for it — all the while the interstellar spaceship on which they’re all permanently confined, owned and operated by (besides the wealthiest passengers) the fossil fuel industry, is on fire and toxifying at locations not normally investigated. Clearly, to date there has been discouragingly insufficient political courage and will to properly act upon the cause-and-effect of manmade global warming and climate change. Neo-liberals and conservatives are overly preoccupied with vociferously criticizing one another for their politics and beliefs thus diverting attention away from the planet’s greatest polluters, where it should and needs to be sharply focused. Albeit, it seems to be conservatives who don’t mind liberally polluting the planet.

But there’s still some hope, mostly due to environmentally conscious and active young people, especially those who are approaching/ reaching voting age. In contrast, the dinosaur electorate who have been voting into high office consecutive mass-pollution promoting or complicit/complacent governments for decades are gradually dying and making way for voters who fully support a healthy Earth thus populace. Frank Sterle White Rock, BC

Public safety a concern in possible election From Page 6 have routinely obstructed passage of his government’s priority bills whenever asked by media if he will ask for an election. From a factual point of view, it should be noted when the Prime Minister prorogued Parliament last summer, he did far more damage in delaying his government bills than any opposition party could possibly do. It should also be noted that the NDP opposition has made offers to fast track and prioritize certain Liberal Government bills and the Prime Minister refused these gestures. In short, the Prime Minister’s argument is factually incorrect and unfair to the NDP. It is true that the Conservative opposition has fought strongly against some of the Liberal Government “priority bills”. One example of a Liberal Government “priority bill” is Bill C-10, which has been panned by many critics as an internet censorship bill under the guise of a broadcast modernization. Canada’s foremost law professor, who also holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa, has said Bill C-10 is a “shocking and likely unconstitutional speech regulation.” Experts like Professor Michael Geist as well as industry and civil liberties experts and stakeholders have continued to strongly advocate against this bill being passed, arguing it is also an assault on long-standing Canadian internet policy, such as violating net neutrality. In the House of Commons, only the Conservative Opposition as well as Independent MP Jody-Wilson Raybould have fought against this bill being passed. So, will there be an election? Certainly, if the Prime Minister believes an election campaign suits his best interests and the interests of the Liberal Party of Canada, I suspect we will see an election in the near future. However the purpose of, what could be my last report to you of this 43rd Parliament, is not to communicate what the Prime Minister wants, but rather to ask what you want. Do you want to see an election called in the immediate future? I can be reached at Dan.Albas@parl.gc.ca or call toll free 1-800-665-8711.

Merritt City Councillor releases new novel Merritt resident and Merritt City Councillor Mike Bhangu has released his first work of fiction.

“What I wanted to show was the harmony and the teamwork that was between the colonialists and the local people, such as the Sikhs, and how there was that other side of it,” Bhangu explained. “But at the same time, there was an element in India historically that didn’t want the British there.” Bhangu also took care to present female characters that were not stereotypes of 19th century women. “I wanted female characters, and I wanted female characters who would be portrayed as strong,” said Bhangu. “Especially for that time period. We have the writer, the General’s daughter who’s trying to write a story and at that time she shouldn’t be doing that, she should be out there getting married or something like that. And the General tries to convince her of this, and she rebels… and again that’s something I wanted to highlight, that even in that time it (female empowerment) was happening.” From first page to last, Bhangu set out to make Hari a swashbuckling tale balancing the old and the new, male and female characters, and mystery and adventure. In addition, for those who have enjoyed his literary offerings thus far, Bhangu’s next publication is already in the works, although he declines to comment on that just yet.

The year is 1897. Lord Stoker Mcleod and his team are missing. Supposedly, the Devil devoured them. A small band of men and women, led by Captain Ragi, is assembled to discover what happened. What they find shocks and astonishes them to the core.” So launches the novel ‘Hari’, the latest book published by Merritt resident and Merritt City Councillor, Mike Bhangu. This is Bhangu’s first foray into fiction, after publishing more than a dozen nonfiction books covering a wide range of subjects from philosophy to religion to war and the power of gratitude. Also an actor, Bhangu sought to combine his love of writing and his love of performance by creating a story in the format of a screenplay, something that he hopes may one day be seen by many on either the small or silver screen. “I do work in the film industry, and it’s tough getting a good acting role,” said Bhangu. “I thought if I write a story, maybe I have a chance of getting that speaking role and more than 30 seconds on screen.” Upon completing the novel, which clocks in at more than 300 pages, Bhangu began shopping the script around, an industry term which refers to the process of having professionals read the screenplay and determine if they would like to take on the project of committing it to film. So far, Bhangu said there have been several interested parties, including a producer who suggested Hari’s potential as a series of some kind. Should that day come, Bhangu has already eyed up a character he would like to portray, having written the novel with that idea in mind and tailoring one of the protagonists to his own personal preferences. “I like Captain Ragi,” said Bhangu. “He resonates with my type of personality, so yes, I did create that character for myself. We’ll see what happens, if that day ever comes.” Although Hari is a popular Indian name of Hindi and Sanskrit origin which means ‘lion’ and is also one of the names of Vishnu, the second god of the Hindu triumvirate, Bhangu said that the novel’s title character is his own creation. “The character does not resemble or wasn’t inspired by anything in history, it’s a character that came out of my imagination,” Bhangu explained. That being said, the story does blend fact and fiction, intermixing historical places and events with elements of fantasy and artistic license. For example, Fort Lockhart and the battle between the British and the Afghan tribesmen are both rooted in historical fact. As is the cooperation between the British and Indian peoples, despite the colonial aspects which Bhangu touches on throughout the novel.

BC Transit soon to be free for kids 12 and under Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@ MERRITTHERALD.COM

Children 12 and under will soon be riding the BC Transit system for free. Starting on Sept. 1, 2021, the ‘Get on Board’ initiative will take effect, allowing for children to board any BC Transit or TransLink service at no cost. “We are excited to launch a program that will benefit parents and caregivers and make life more affordable for families across B.C.,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “As we rebuild transit systems and ridership after the pandemic, this new program will encourage people to get onboard with the potential to save families hundreds of dollars every year.” The cost savings could add up to a significant amount for families with young children - in Merritt, the current price for a monthly pass for students from kindergarden to grade 12 is $32.00. That would add up to a total of $384 per year per child, which will now be wiped out. Approximately 370,000 children 12 and under ride BC Transit. “This initiative will create lifelong transit riders, build better, more inclusive and sustainable communities and move us all further along the pathway to a cleaner and stronger British Columbia,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Minister Responsible for TransLink. “More people choosing public transit means fewer vehicles on the road, reduced traffic congestion and cleaner air for everyone.” Some more details:

Brown, Dunstone of Kamloops have path to Olympics, as Curling Canada reveals trials plans The postponed 2020 Summer Olympics ended on Sunday in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Games will begin in February in Beijing.

Marty Hastings KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

Suddenly, the time is now for the Corryn Brown rink of Kamloops Curling Club and Matt Dunstone, the River City resident who skips a Regina-based team. “It’s definitely pretty crazy that the Olympics are only a few months away when the summer Olympics just ended,” said Brown, whose rink includes third Erin Pincott, second Dezaray Hawes, lead Sam Fisher and coach Allison MacInnes. “It’s pretty nuts to think about.” Curling Canada on Tuesday laid out the path to the Tim Hortons Curling Trials, which will run from Nov. 20 to Nov. 28 in Saskatoon and produce the four-person men’s and women’s teams that will don the Maple Leaf in Beijing. Brown and Dunstone have received invitations to compete at the Canadian Curling Trials Direct-Entry Event, which will run from Sept. 22 to Sept. 26 in Ottawa in conjunction with the Canadian Curling Pre-Trials Direct-Entry Event. “It was very inspiring to watch our Canadian athletes do what they did in Tokyo and we want to be part of that, as well,” Dunstone said. GOLF TALK: Sloan closing in on FedEx Cup playoffs Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM Merritt’s Roger Sloan is now only a few spots out of a spot in the PGA’s FedEx Cup playoffs, after a solo sixth finish at the Barracuda Championship. The golfer finished the Truckee, California tournament with a solid six under 65 on Sunday, finishing with 40 points in a modified pointbased scoring format that favoured more aggressive play than the usual scoring format. He finished ten points behind winner Erik van Rooyen.

With the finish, he was able to move up six spots on the FedEx Cup playoff list, from 137 to 131. That still leaves him just shy of earning a playoff berth and securing his Tour card for next season, needing to finish within the top 125. Only one event remains on the PGA’s regular season schedule - the Wyndham Championship out of North Carolina this coming weekend. It will be Sloan’s last chance to earn that coveted place within the top 125. For his solo sixth finish, he earned himself a paycheck of $126,875.

TRAIL TREKS: Upper Scenic Trail In the latest edition of our Trail Treks column, Darch Oborne takes a look at the Upper Scenic Trail.

Darch Oborne CONTRIBUTOR

This lovely local trail is super for hikers or bikers; a Blue Trail (moderate degree of strenuous exercise, but nothing scary); almost any time of year as it is ‘South Slope’ and gets/retains very little snow. And the views are superb; especially if you go off trail for 100 meters in a couple of special spots (see if you can find them) to look down on our beautiful Nicola Valley. Do it as an ONB (Out and Back); start at the flagpole and follow Tom Lacey Trail for half a kilometre, then a sharp left following ‘Scenic’ Trail for another half a kilometre; then keep left at the ‘Scenic’ junction. The trail meanders up gradually (it was built as a two-way trail by mountain bikers in the 1990’s), passes the entry to Supra Scenic heading northeast and has lots of shady areas, and one small stream about three kilometres along. After seven kilometres, you will finally get to the double track and to the drop in for Dangle; a Double Black trail I built five years ago. Do not descend it on bike or by foot, as it is appropriately categorized. This is the Upper Scenic trail end; so retrace your route back, and enjoy the trail and views in the new Westerly direction. You may encounter an occasional horse rider, or a moto, but rarely, as this trail is a bit off the beaten path; that’s what makes it so nice; the solitude as well as the views. And if you have to bail out, there are several moto tracks which go right down to the North Bench. Please pack out all your litter. You will see deer on Upper Scenic so control your dogs, and bears and cougars have been seen in the area this year. Upper Scenic is part of the Merritt Crown mountain bike race course. You can see the entire course on the Trailforks App, under Merritt Trails. You can do this on your computer and just print a copy; or get the app on your phone for GPS tracking. Ride On!

Olympic hopes for pair of Kamloops curlers released, but Curling Canada notes the top three women’s teams and top two men’s teams will qualify for the Tim

Hortons Curling Trials in Saskatoon. “We’ve planned accordingly to make sure we can get as many events and training

weekends as we can prior to make sure we’re bringing our best once we get there,” said Brown, whose rink will make its season debut next week at a cashspiel in Leduc, Alta. In Ottawa, the field on the women’s side will include Brown, Suzanne Birt (Charlottetown), Kelsey Rocque (Edmonton), Laura Walker (Edmonton) and Casey Scheidegger (Lethbridge, Alta.). Dunstone, Colton Flasch (Saskatoon), Jason Gunnlaugson (Winnipeg), Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene,

Ont.) and Mike McEwen (Winnipeg) will compete on the men’s side. Trials DirectEntry Event teams that do not qualify for the Tim Hortons Curling Trials in Ottawa will have a second chance at the Home Hardware Curling Pre-Trials, which will take place from Oct. 26 to Oct. 31 in Liverpool, N.S. “It’s definitely interesting, to say the least,” Dunstone said. “It seems like everybody and their dog has a shot at the Olympic trials this year, just with all the other different

events and formats. I’m not going to complain about anything, considering the season we had last year. It’s just nice to be playing again.” Brown and Dunstone won provincial titles in 2020 and were unable to defend their crowns in 2021, as B.C. and Saskatchewan cancelled provincial championship tournaments amid the pandemic. Both were selected by their respective provincial curling governing bodies to compete at the 2021 national championships, which were held inside the Calgary curling

bubble earlier this year. Team Dunstone claimed its second consecutive bronze medal at the Brier. Team Brown, which placed sixth at the national Scotties in 2020 in Moose Jaw, posted a 4-4 record in round-robin action in Calgary to fall short of the Championship Pool. The major events held inside the Calgary curling bubble were preceded by a campaign ravaged by the pandemic. Brown’s season came to an abrupt halt on Nov. 12, 2020, and did not resume until the

national championship began in February. Team members have fingers crossed for a return to relative normalcy in 2021-2022. “As far as I know, most of the events are a go and if they aren’t, it’s not necessarily due to COVID reasons in B.C.,” Brown said.

The Kamloops Curling Club halted operations in September of 2020. BC Housing took over the building in October of 2020, using it as shelter space until its lease expired at the end of July. Ice could return to the KCC as early as Sept. 7, said club general manager Rob Nordin.

Mandolin’s

Mandolin’s is a gem of a coffee shop and bakery which has been serving Merrittonians hand crafted coffee and tea beverages and homemade goodies for more than twenty years. Cheryl MacMillan and her daughter Laurie are the third and longest running owners, having purchased the business a decade ago, celebrating their tenth anniversary in May of this year. “We’re known for the baking, we bake every day, all fresh,” said Cheryl MacMillan, touching on part of what makes Mandolin’s a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. No doubt MacMillan’s experience has also been

helpful into turning Mandolin’s into a ‘must visit’ eatery, having spent much of her working life involved in the food industry, including a stint at Mandolin’s long before she was an owner. “I worked here 20 years ago for Val and Lorne Sanders,” said MacMillan. “I was asked to buy it then, but I turned it down. I was then approached by McDonald’s to go and manage the two McDonald’s stores, so I left Mandolin’s to do that. And then Val phoned just over ten years ago to ask if we would like to buy it, and I couldn’t say no twice.” The Nicola Valley is fortunate that MacMillan

decided to say yes, as Mandolin’s has become a cozy community hangout spot with good eats. “It’s a great little coffee shop to come and visit,” said MacMillan, who has opted for a warm and inviting space adorned with local memorabilia, plants and books. “We’re hockey sponsors, so that’s the reason for the different jerseys that we’ve got throughout. My husband cowboyed so we’ve got some really neat pictures on the wall of the different guys he’s worked with on different local ranches. It’s just a nice place to be able to come and sit or visit or coffee or do your work.” Indeed, over the course of the interview, several businessmen and

women, members of the Merritt RCMP detachment, retirees and resident Merritt writer Mike Bhangu made their way to tables and comfy chairs and couches. “I like antiques, so I’ve brought in a couple of loveseats, and I want it to be comfortable for people,” said MacMillan. “If they want to sit down and put their feet up on the couch, they can do that, and I don’t want anyone to feel rushed. If they want to come and sit for two hours or three hours, they can. There’s no pressure to leave, and now that things have opened back up, we definitely have more people sitting inside and enjoying it.” The COVID-19 pandemic hit the food industry hard, and Mandolin’s was no exception, but the MacMillans found a way to pivot their business model and come back even better than before, providing exceptional service throughout restrictions and lockdowns. “We never closed, we just really worked hard

at creating new products for the menu,” explained MacMillan, noting that new gluten-free and keto options have been very popular. “We did a lot of bulk orders; everything was done through E-transfer and pre-pay and all they had to do was come in and pick it up.” Laurie was also active on social media, connecting with the community, and as a family business, Cheryl’s grandchildren regularly helped out. “It’s definitely worked out really well being a family business, and having the granddaughters help as well,” said MacMillan, who was nevertheless overjoyed to have dine-in customers return. “I was kind of lonely by myself all day, every day,” MacMillan joked. “I did get some bookwork done, but it wasn’t the same that’s for sure.” If you’re looking for a quality latte, cappuccino, or an old-fashioned cup of Joe, a hot meal, homemade sandwich or baked goods – Cheryl’s

favourites are the date squares, the famed Mandolin’s cinnamon buns and keto chocolate cheesecake – Mandolin’s is the place to be. Also on the menu are a wide assortment of smoothies, made with fresh fruit and any add-ins you prefer, including yogurt, spinach, kale, collagen or protein. If you feel like you need a pick-meup, or if you want to do something

good for the community, you can also pick up or contribute a free meal from the ‘Meal Wall’, an initiative Laurie and Cheryl launched in which food and drinks are pre-paid for by one customer and used by another. “Come in and enjoy the atmo-

sphere, enjoy our products, and go away leaving with a good feeling about it that you can recommend to others,” is the cordial invite extended by Cheryl, Laurie and family. Mandolin’s is located in the Railyard Mall plaza, #114-1700 Garcia St.

Cecile Marie PATTISON

September 16, 1944 ~ July 26, 2021

It is with great sadness we share that Cecile Marie Pattison (Lafreniere) aged 76 of Grande Prairie AB passed away peacefully on July 26th, 2021 with her family by her side. Cecile was born September 16th, 1944 in Riverside Ontario. Nanny, Nan, Bananagamma, Mom, and Aunt Cecile are all names she went by, and she was a favourite to many. Cecile was predeceased by 3 of her kids Claudette, Baby Boy, and Patrick, as well as her own parents and a number of her siblings. Bananagamma will be terribly missed by her surviving children Robert, Barbara, Glenn (Tina), Gail (Andy) Raquel (Michael), her 10 cherished grandchildren (Amanda, Bryan, Reanna, Alex, Mandy, Chelsey, Zacary, Tamara, Makayla, Nelson) and 2 great grandchildren (Aiden, Amelia), and many many many many nieces and nephews. Nanny worked for many years in Merritt BC primarily at Granny’s Kitchen and ABC Family Restaurant as a baker, cook, and kitchen manager before she retired in 2007. Nan was widely known for her exceptional cake decorating skills, her mean Bingo game (which took a lot of practice), her quick wit, her outstanding crossword solving ability, and for knowing her way around any deck of cards as she was always a bit of a card shark. Mom was known as “Mom” to more than just her biological children and if needed, others were welcomed in her home with open arms. She was always full of love and compassion, many of her kids’ friends also called her Mom, and she will be greatly missed by many.

LANE John Albert

John passed away peacefully at the Florentine on August 1, 2021, at 91 years old. He was born in Kilgard, B.C on January 9, 1930. He lived in Merritt most of his life, working at most of the local sawmills as a millwright, until his retirement. He was a kind and gentle person, who loved gardening, a reflection of his faith in our Creator, Jehovah. He also loved cars and “MacGyvering” anything mechanical. A big highlight during his stay at the Florentine was the Antique Car Show visit, admiring each car and chatting with its’ owner. He was predeceased by his wife Joan, in 2019, after 68 years of marriage; 2 brothers: Lloyd and Keith; 2 sisters: Edith and Lily; his son-in-law David Sutherland; his grandson Johnathan Harris; his great-grandson Braeden Lane and 5 brothers-inlaw. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Ken (Ailene), Barbara Ball (Ron), Lynette Piccin (Rocci) and Murray (Sheri), his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his sisters Pearl Hobbs and Eva Cossett, and his sister-in-law Sheila Lane as well as extended family. The family is extremely grateful to the wonderful Caregivers on the Complex Care floor of the Florentine. Their kindness and caring gave Dad dignity. Thank you ALL so much!
