PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS

Tegart emerges as frontrunner With mail-in ballots yet to be fully counted, the incumbent Liberal is in the lead for Fraser-Nicola. Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

The smoke has cleared...for the most part. Saturday’s election has Liberal Jackie Tegart once again taking her seat in the Fraser-Nicola riding, though mail-in ballots will not be fully counted until what could be mid-November. As of Wednesday morning, 94 of the 95 polls have reported, showing Tegart leading the New Democratic Party’s Aaron Sumexheltza by just under 400 votes. Though Tegart is intent on not counting her chickens before they have hatched. “We know that there are a lot of mail-in votes,” said Tegart. “... It’s always been tight,

and tonight (Saturday) is no different.” The most up-to-date records as of press time have the Green Party’s Jonah Timms coming in third, with around 13-percent of the vote. Former NDPer turned Independent Dennis Adamson seems to have taken the fourth spot with about 3.5-percent of the ballots, while Merritt Councillor Mike Bhangu rounded out the candidates with around 2.5-percent of the vote. Provincially, Tegart’s Liberal Party was run over by the NDPs, seemingly losing twelve seats to the majority government if the current polls are indicative of the final results. “Overall I think we’ve seen an orange sweep across the province, and

BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson has stepped down. Wilkinson made the announcement at a press conference on Monday afternoon, two days after the end of the provincial election. “After Saturday’s election, there are still roughly half a million votes to count,” said Wilkinson. “But it’s clear that the NDP will be forming the next government of British

Columbia and that John Horgan will continue as Premier.” Wilkinson said that he spoke with Horgan yesterday to congratulate him on a “successful election campaign.” The New Democratic Party’s decision to call a snap election seems to have played out very much in their favour, stealing a dozen seats from the Liberals to hold a majority government. Locally, it is almost a certainty that the Liberal party was successful: incumbent Jackie Tegart holds the lead in Fraser-Nicola with some mail-in ballots still to be counted. Wilkinson, who has led the Liberals since February of 2018, said that it had been a great honour. “It is now time for me to make room for someone else to take this role.” The timeline for a new leadership selection process has not been announced. Wilkinson will step down once the new leader is selected.

packages have been counted so far in the riding, but provincially, that number sits at around 69-percent. Tegart first won the MLA seat in 2013, retaining her position in the 2017 election.

“Today, we begin the challenging and exciting process of rebuilding the party.” Premier Horgan released his own statement on Wilkinson’s resignation through the NDP’s channels. “I want to thank Andrew Wilkinson for his service and dedication to the people of British Columbia in his role as Opposition leader. I’ve done that job, and I’ve often said it is the toughest job in politics. Mr. Wilkinson led the official opposition through a very challenging time for our province. He ran a spirited campaign and I wish him the best in the future. “Mr. Wilkinson has made our province and our civic life stronger by offering his ideas and his vision for our province. We are all better for his contributions. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all candidates from all parties who put their names forward in the election. Our democracy requires brave people to put their hands up, no matter the result.”

OPINION From the Herald archives: Oct., 1966

LETTERS to the editor

North Bench development problematic Editor,

I am one of the many residents who use and enjoy the forested area behind the Bench. In mid-September, several residents of the community participated in three informal gatherings to discuss questions and concerns about the proposal, and the processes. Processes: We have concerns about the processes taken in communication about this plan so far. The survey by the City asked for input on the North Bench Development when many people were not even aware of the issue. We spent time in early October visiting neighbours. Every person we spoke to was opposed to the development. The recreation area is well used and roundly enjoyed by residents from across the entire City for a wide variety of activities. In the survey, 81% of Merritt residents responded that they have hiked, walked or used the green space above the Bench (of 383 responses). In an article in the Herald, in the survey and in the webinar, it was stated that, “Housing options for Merritt residents are needed more than ever – that’s why we’re developing the North Bench Development Plan”. Why does the City need the added expense of adding Crown Lands when there are many property parcels within the City that have yet to be developed? The Webinar: The October 6 webinar was an innovative way to present ideas and information safely during a pandemic. The difference between having a public meeting and a webinar that only allowed the moderator to view our questions was problematic. We would really like to have been able to read the opinions and questions from everyone. Several of our questions went unanswered. We are concerned that the City assumes everyone has the same ability to access information and technology levels to be part of this process. During the webinar, we were told that the North Bench area was the preferred development because it would allow the building of a complete neighbourhood, including businesses and commercial interests. Why is it important in a small city like Merritt to have a third business district? How does the City rationalize building another centre, outside of the downtown core and the north end of town? Why are businesses needed in an established residential community with so many already nearby and accessible by public transit, vehicles and/or walking? How do downtown businesses feel about developing commercial interests on the Bench? It seems there are many people and factors to take into consideration. The Future: Surveys, urban planning companies, rezoning, public meetings, webinars and other expenditures add up quickly. How far is the City going to go with the proposal if there is significant opposition? We have asked the Mayor and Council about a City referendum and the question still goes unanswered. We are strongly opposed to the City acquiring the Crown Land behind the North Bench neighbourhood, and the proposed development of homes and businesses. The survey results and our conversations with neighbours show that leaving it as an unspoiled forest area is preferred by the majority. Merritt comes through for cop ride Editor,

The 20th Annual Cops for Kids ride was completed on September 20, 2020. This was my third year that I have participated in the ride. Although this year, with Covid in play, it was quite different than others. In light of social distancing constraints the riders were essentially tasked with completing the 1000 km ride alone or in small teams of 6. In past years we were able to ride in a group of up to 30 riders. I am pleased to announce that many of the riders still took on the challenge. We were able to keep each other up to date on social media and phone calls. Part way into the ride the wildfire smoke became a considerable health concern and the ride was postponed for a number of days. All the riders stayed committed. Some rode indoors while others travelled to areas with better air quality and rode there. The level of commitment that the ambassador families instill in the riders is amazing. Through all of this the ambassador families do not get to take days off for poor air quality of Covid concerns. They push on doing what they have to do for their children. Truly inspiring. Through all of this I want to mention that the community of Merritt and its citizens pulled through and sponsored my ride at a rate higher than any of the other years. I cannot express how much this means to me and the ambassador families. As the pledges came in I was able to brag to the larger group about this community of Merritt. Please know that your donations are going to very deserving families. The overhead of this charity is kept extremely low so that the funds get to the families. I am so proud to be a part of this ride and a citizen of Merritt. Cpl. Derrick Francis Merritt RCMP

Merritt Town Council is to investigate the possibility of erecting its own police building. Mayor Allan Collett pointed out at the regular council meeting Thursday that the town was nearing the 5,000 population mark, and the move may be the wisest under the circumstances. The Mayor said the government could ask the town to take over its own policing. Mayor Collett reminded councillors that the Federal Government purchased a site several years ago. It had since been realised the property would not be suitable and it might be better if the town considered erecting its own building for lease to the R.C. M.P.

Council for Spirit Square washroom

POLICE FILES

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS From Page 5 ing, smoking, public urination, and washing, even though it is not a potable water source. Councillor Adam Etchart noted that there are already washrooms in Central Park, so it is clearly “ideal” to also have them downtown. “The alternative is

we don’t, and people just use ‘the loo’ outside.” Councillor Melvina White queried whether the washrooms will be open at nighttime, something that CAO Sean Smith said would be explored if the project went ahead. Council also brought up the possibility of better lighting, as well as motion

sensors, if the washroom was installed. Smith added that maintenance costs are not yet known for the washroom. The prospect of vandalism happening in the washroom was brought up by council members, though Councillor Etchart mentioned that the washroom would most likely be used during

streets, and do not have a washroom on a regular basis. I think we need to expect them to be there, because that is what they need. “We need it for tourism as well, but we also need it for that population.” All seven council members were in favour of exploring the project further.

Structural fire on Coldwater

Family Restaurant

Morgan Hampton LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER

It was a scene of destruction at the site of a fire that occurred in a residential neighbourhood on Monday. “In the early morning of Oct. 26 the fire department and the RCMP responded to a report of a structure fire at 1676 Coldwater Ave.,” said Staff Sgt. Maj. Drouin of the Merritt RCMP. “Ultimately it was determined that the fire originated from a shed that was fully engulfed and demolished in the fire. The fire then spread to the nearby fence and also destroyed a camper, the type that you put in the back of a

day events: a time when vandals would be least likely to damage the washroom. Mayor Linda Brown said that the washroom is probably something that is needed for the general public, but even more so for Merritt’s “most vulnerable population.” “Those that are hanging out on the

pick-up truck.” Although the spread of the flames was not extreme, Drouin notes that a nearby home was cosmetically damaged by the blaze. “It then caused some damage to a neighbouring home, that consisted of the siding burning

off. Nothing that would cause the structure to be unsafe for occupancy,” said Drouin. The RCMP and MFRD conducted a preliminary investigation. The investigation indicated the cause of the fire was likely not suspicious.

“Along with the fire department our members responded and determined that there was no criminality involved with the fire,” said Drouin. “It’s believed to be an accidental fire related to electrical appliances in the shed.”

Ground broken for Murray Church rebuild

Church-goers helped officially break ground at the site of the Murray Church on Hwy. 5A on Sunday. JAKE COURTEPATTE/Herald

Enough money has been raised to get working on rebuilding the historic Murray Church. Jake Courtepatte MERRITT HERALD

The Murray Church rebuild is officially underway. Ground was broken at the site on Highway 5A on Sunday, after around $170,000 was raised for the project. The church was burned to the ground in a case of arson in January of 2019. Prior to that, it was the oldest site in the Nicola Valley, having originally been erected in 1867. Dozens gathered with Reverend Elaine Diggle for the ceremony on Sunday. Diggle said that the original goal to begin the rebuild was $180,000, though there has been so much donated in time and services that it was sufficient to begin. A board meeting a few weeks ago gave the construction team the green light. Initial work is set to begin next week on replacing the founda-

tion before the ground hardens, with work set to be finalized by next summer. The early snowfall has not stopped the project. “It’s supposed to be eleven degrees above later this week,” said Diggle. “This was a very early snow. I’ve never seen it this early before. But in a way it’s wonderful...the first Christmas Eve service we had here after 58 years, five years go, it was snowing, and it was wonderful. People were coming and going. Country churches belong to every season, and snow is part of it.” Reverend Diggle said that she felt a sense of relief that ground was able to be broken. With the ongoing pandemic, a number of fundraisers were either pushed back or cancelled, putting an even larger burden on the project. However, a passionate following came through with plenty of

cash donations, once the dust settled at the beginning of COVID19. “Suddenly things

began to rumble up again. The spirit was moving.” Diggle said that the “thermometer” sign outside of Trinity United Church, constantly updating the amount that had been raised for the rebuild of the Murray Church, was what kept residents reminded of the goal. “We even had people coming from out of town that were working to do a job,” said Diggle, reminiscing on a $5,000 donation from Clearview Demolition in June. “That sort of started things moving again, in bigger jumps.”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS HONOURED VETERANS

Nicola Cemetery rededication well attended Isabel Healy-Morrow CONTRIBUTOR

On the afternoon of Sunday, October 18, Bishop Lincoln visited the historic Nicola Pioneer Cemetery to re-dedicate this sacred place of burial after a major restoration project. This spot is located at the western end of Nicola Lake, near the former village of Nicola and the Nicola Ranch. Over the years, the cemetery had become tired looking; the graves needed attention and the fencing had become shabby. This cemetery was first utilized as a place of burial in 1899 (sadly for a four month old little boy) and was officially dedicated in 1905. At that time, the cemetery was part of the Diocese of New Westminster, as the Diocese of Cariboo

had not yet been established. There are over 150 people resting there, including 11 veterans (four of which fought in World War I) and 15 children. Many of the names on the headstones will be familiar to residents of the Nicola Valley, as the early pioneer families whose names grace the streets of Merritt are well represented: Abbott, Armstrong, Clapperton, Bent, Garcia, Pooley, and many others. Two of Merritt’s early doctors – Dr. George Tutill and his son Dr. George William Douglas Tutill, who died sadly at age 28 after contracting tuberculosis, are buried there as well. Thanks to generous donations from the Petrie Family (whose ancestors donated the land for the cemetery back in 1899) and the Royal Canadian

Legion, Branch #96 – Merritt, and the hard work of St. Michael’s parishioners, community volunteers, and Legion members, the cemetery was renewed and restored. Vigorous work has resulted in many loads of old fencing, branches, and assorted debris being hauled away. Volunteers wielded paint brushes and gave the archway, gates, and fencing a new coat of white weather-resistant paint. New signs over the archway and by the highway were commissioned and created by Funk Signs of Kamloops and installed. A flagpole bearing the Canadian flag and the Anglican Church of Canada flag was erected. Gradually, the old forgotten cemetery was being restored to a place of order and dignity.

The Nicola Pioneer Cemetery was rededicated earlier this month, and given a much-needed makeover. Photos submitted

Canada Post planning on holiday season “like no other” Morgan Hampton LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER

Earlier this year when large numbers of Canadians entered lockdown and many brick and mortar businesses temporarily closed in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, people turned to online shopping at unprecedented levels. During the months of April and May, Canada Post reported ‘Christmas levels’ of parcels being processed and delivered. “We saw parcel levels that we would normally only see around Christmas, we would deliver up to two-million parcels in one day, that’s what we would see around Cyber Monday, and Black Friday Week sales,” said Jon Hamilton, spokesperson for Canada Post. This, in addition to new regulations around social distancing which caused logistical operation problems at processing facilities, created a massive backlog of mail. Throughout recent months, Canada Post has been catching up on deliveries and clearing that backlog, but they are warning customers that as Christmas approaches, processing times could once again be very long and holiday shopping deliveries seriously delayed. So much so, that the Crown corporation is recommending people do their shopping, and

shipping, early. “We’re now planning for a holiday season like no other, and we’re asking for your help,” said Rod Hart, Canada Post Chief Customer and Marketing Officer. “This year, online shopping has grown significantly as Canadians spent more time at home to combat COVID, we expect that trend to continue, resulting in a significant number of parcels to process and deliver.” In order to stay ahead of the expected parcel influx, Canada Post is ‘scaling up’ their operations. Adding more people, vehicles and processing equipment, as well as increasing parcel pick up locations, delivering on weekends where necessary and extending hours at some post offices. Improved, more accurate tracking has also been prioritized. Still, customers are advised to expect continued delays. “Even with these extra measures, there are limits to what we can safely process and deliver, so we’re asking you to break with tradition and shop early this holiday season to avoid disappointment,” said Hart. “If not, the traditional late holiday surge of parcels on top of the expected demand could overwhelm our ability to process and deliver and could cause delays.”

Cents score late for first preseason win Late game heroics had the Cents pick up their first two points of the preseason in what was their third game. Jared Thomas CONTRIBUTOR

The Cents ground out a text book road game that didn’t have a deciding factor until a goal with 3 seconds remaining gave the Cents the edge over the Spruce Kings. The first period didn’t have a lot going for either side save some penalties. The Cents made three trips to the sin bin along with two misconducts, but were able to kill all of the Spruce Kings attempts. Rookie netminder and native of the North, Colton Phillips-Watts was a big part of the penalty kill and held the team in the period. The Cents got a pair of powerplay opportunities but weren’t able to make good on them. Shots after one were 9-5 PG. In the second period the offense started to roll, Nick Rheaume went to the box for

The Merritt Centennials are adding a WHLer. Forward Brodi Stuart has been loaned to the Cents by the Kamloops Blazers, a veteran of the major junior league. “Brodi is a first class person and with the current situation in the WHL this was a no brainer for our organization to bring him in,” said Cents head coach Derek Sweet-Coulter. “He will fit in great with our group and

will fill an important veteran role up front. For us it’s not just what he brings on the ice, but off the ice as well. He will make everyone around him better and that was something we couldn’t pass up. I’d like to thank Matt Bardsley and the Kamloops Blazers organization for their support throughout this process.” Due to the WHL’s late start date, the league is allowing its players to join BCHL clubs until training camp starts to keep warm.

Grayson Valente and he was able to walk down the left side and fire an off-angle rocket to open

Stuart has three full years with the Blazers under his belt, in which he has seen moderate success: He posted 39 points in 63 games last season, and in his WHL career, has a total of 45 goals and 70 assists in 204 games played. The 20-year old will be eligible to suit up for the Centennials until late December, upon which he is expected to rejoin the Blazers. Photo courtesy of Kamloops This Week

the scoring. The Cents took just one penalty in the second period, and were able to play much

more disciplined on the road, but squandered a two-man advantage late in the frame. Andrew Seaman leveled the score after some pretty passing by PG to make it 1-1. Shots after two were 17-10. The final frame saw both teams jockey for position and the go ahead goal. Colton PhillipsWatts made some quality stops to keep the team in it and the game tied. An early penalty by Erichuk was killed off, and it wasn’t until a late too many men call that the Centennials got their golden opportunity. With just 32 seconds left Derek Sweet-Coulter called his time out, drew up his play and the players executed. After the puck swung round to the right point, Talon Zakall gathered the loose puck, fired low and Ben Ward caught a piece in front to put it past Trotter and deliver the Cents to victory with just three seconds remaining. Final shots were 25-17. The Cents now have another couple weeks before they meet the Spruce Kings again on November 7th. Business Feature

Boyd Autobody and Glass has been serving the Okanagan since 1988, providing automotive collision and glass repairs for all makes and models at more than 50 Western Canada locations, including the recently established Merritt location on Pooley Ave. which has been serving the Nicola Valley for a year and a half. “We were inspired to open here roughly 1.5 years ago because we saw the potential that Merritt could bring to our business and what we could bring to Merritt,” said one of the Merritt location’s owner operators, Ryan Wuthe, in partnership with Methal Abougoush. “We are ICBC Accredited as well as I-Car Gold Certified allowing us to repair vehicle body, paint, glass, and frame work. Our Estimators are the best in the industry, and our technicians have top training and certifications.” Boyd also provides

courtesy cars, so that customers can carry on with their lives and not face an interruption in their busy schedules while having repair work done on their vehicle. “We structure our business on quality workmanship and customer satisfaction,” said Wuthe, noting the company also offers a Lifetime Guarantee on their work. Boyd began as a family company, something Wuthe believes helps foster not only a dedication to service, but an enjoyable working environment and tight knit employee relationships. As a company that started as a family run business, Boyd has carried through a strong company culture which focuses not only on customer service, but employee job happiness as well,” said Wuthe. “We are all a team and a family. There is always an air of teamwork in everything we do. We believe having

employee bonding opportunities helps strengthen the sentiment of teamwork among all levels of staff. When employees are happy, they have a positive line of communication with each other, and care about the company they work for. If an employee is happy, you can usually count on your customers being happy too. We ensure employee teamwork and satisfaction by putting together staff functions outside of work so we can all learn about each other as people, and not just co-workers.” In addition to ensuring their employees and customers are happy and looked after, as a company, Boyd feels it is important to give back to the community and that is no different in Merritt. ‘We sponsor several events through the year, and donate to multiple charities including, but not limited to: the SPCA, Arthritis Society,

Heart & Stroke, Girl Guides, The Food Bank, and many more,” said Wuthe. “We also support the Merritt Centennials. It is our hope that our customers know that when they ‘Bring it to Boyd’ they truly are giving back to their local community.” Part of that giving back also includes a yearly bulk purchase of cookies from Girl Guides of Canada. A win-win for the Girl Guides, who use the money for projects, trips and events, and the Boyd family and their customers, who get to splurge on the highly popular sweets. One of the things Boyd is proud of is a bulk Girl Guide Cookie purchases every year to help send the scouts to camps and fund their crafts,” explained Wuthe. “This year we Bought $2000 worth of Girl Guide cookies.”

Cookies which were then provided to customers as a thank you for choosing Boyd for their automotive repairs.

Sweet Birthday

We are sad to announce the passing of Michael Kenneth Sterling on October 16, 2020, after a battle with cancer. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Chunfang, his stepdaughter Xiaohong, and his five brothers, Cliff, George, Martin, Glenn, and Bryon. Mike was born in the Nicola Valley in mid-1950s, where he and with his 5 siblings were raised by parents Patrick and Donna Sterling. Mike enjoyed school and was active in sports, he especially loved hockey which he started playing at an early age and continued to play well into his adult years. He was a music lover, he studied music in school, played the trombone, and amassed a large record collection as he was always willing to explore music of all kinds. Mike had a great sense of humour and loved to share a laugh over a joke or funny story. When his hearty, infectious laugh filled the room you knew there was a good story being told. Mike met his future wife Chunfang while touring in Nanning, China in Christmas 2004. They were married in June 2006. In 2012 they decided to move back to Canada and together with stepdaughter Xiao, made a happy home in New Westminster. Mike had a great big heart, a generous spirit and knew great joy in his life, especially as husband with wife Chunfang. He will be dearly missed by us all. Services were held Friday, October 23, 2020 in Maple Ridge, BC. We thank all family and friends who attended, as well as all those who sent messages of support.
