OUR STORY Long before the land became a part of Canada, people had been fishing, hunting and thriving in the Nicola Valley. The Nlaka’pamux, Syilx and Secwepemc people were known to have lived in this region, with abundant stocks of salmon providing a stable source of food. European settlers would arrive in the area much later, around 1867. Captivated by the temperate climate and the potential of the soil surrounding the lake, they decided to make the Nicola Valley their home. In the 1880’s, three ranches joined to form a community known as Forksdale —named for the way the forks of the Nicola and Coldwater Rivers meet towards the west side of town. The city’s name would later be changed to Merritt in honour of William Hamilton Merritt, a mining engineer and railway promoter. Merritt is where the strength of industry meets natural beauty; where idyllic country living meets a vibrant downtown; where the rolling grass meadows meet the rugged ridge of the Coastal Mountains; where heritage, history and culture meets a spirit of adventure and discovery. This is the Nicola Valley. This is Merritt. And we can’t wait to meet you.

ENDLESS ADVENTURE From the moment you set foot in the Nicola Valley, you will feel pull of nature urging you to get outdoors and experience the natural beauty of our region. Whether you set out on two feet or two wheels, there are enough trails winding through the valley to experience everything the area has to offer. Put on a comfy pair of shoes and meander up the Tom Lacey Legacy Trail towards the Merritt Viewpoint, where you’ll find panoramic views of the city. For a more challenging adventure, head out towards Stoyoma Mountain where you’ll discover alpine meadows and pristine lakes. You’ll want to remember to bring your camera should you head out in this direction — the vistas are as breathtaking as the scrambling hike to get there. If scaling a mountainside isn’t your thing, consider taking on the Kane Valley Trail, where hikers can lose themselves among the abundant fauna and lush wildflowers. For more local wildlife, head to Harmon Lake where a 2.7 kilometre interpretive trail is a must for bird watchers. Over 200 species call this sanctuary home.

The Nicola Valley is making a name for itself as a mountain biker’s paradise. Scores of trails are maintained by the local Merritt Mountain Biking Association, and all levels of bikers will find something to fit their needs. Head towards Swakum Mountain for roller coaster-esque thrills and dips on the north end of town. Challenge yourself on the Dangle trail, or take the easier route on the Upper Scenic trail. On the south end of town, there are enough trails on the Coutlee Plateau to keep you occupied for the entire day. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there is a trail with your name on it. Ride fast and furious as you crisscross the Godey Creek trail, which rolls over bridges and through the mud. Take a rest at the waterfall before getting back on the bike and pedalling your way to your next adventure. Or challenge yourself to take on the Merritt Crown — a 120-kilometre trail linking all of Merritt’s riding areas.

A LAKE A DAY AS LONG AS YOU STAY Before the city was known as the Country Music Capital of Canada, locals were known to tell visitors that in the Nicola Valley, there is a “lake a day, as long as you stay.” A day spent out on one of the many lakes in the Nicola Valley will reveal why the city’s old slogan still rings true.
If you’re looking for a local spot to cool off, N’Kwala recreational sites are located about 20 minutes outside of town on Highway 8 towards Lower Nicola. During summer hot spells when the water levels are low, the site is an ideal location for a refreshing dip in the river.
Monck Provincial Park sits on the shores of Nicola Lake, less than half an hour from downtown Merritt. With a boat launch, picnic spots and a swimming area, the lake is a popular spot for campers and day-use patrons alike. Hop on a stand up paddle board and explore the expanse of the lake at a relaxing pace. Or cast your line and fish for Kokanee or Burbot — you won’t have trouble finding your own spot in the 22-kilometre long lake. When conditions are right — and they often are — a strong wind blowing over the lake makes it the perfect venue for windsurfing and sailing.
Things don’t slow down on the lakes in the Nicola Valley during the winter, as some of the finest ice fishing in the province take place in our backyard. In addition to Nicola, Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes, there is prime ice fishing at dozens of small lakes located a short distance from the city centre. Some spots require specific vehicles for access, and are located outside of cell phone service areas. Be sure to check your directions and equipment with Tourism Merritt and Recreation Sites BC before heading out on the road.
Take the road less travelled and head to Kentucky and Alleyne Lakes off Highway 97C. The stunning turquoise waters of these lakes are rich with rainbow trout. Juniors have a chance to get their feet wet with fishing restricted to those under 16 years old on any of the ponds between the two lakes.

And if the idea of casting your line on a lake in the Nicola Valley sounds irresistible but you’d rather not rough it, check out any one of the numerous fishing lodges in the area for a wrap-around fishing experience you won’t soon forget. Check with Tourism Merritt for more information on these getaways.

PICK YOUR OWN PACE There is plenty to see and do in Merritt without having to hop in your vehicle. Families can enjoy the sunshine at anyone of Merritt’s many parks, find a private spot for an afternoon picnic or do some shopping along historic Quilchena Avenue. Leave the vehicle behind and come discover what’s waiting for you right at home in Merritt. With green grass and plenty of space to run around, Central Park is a great spot for families with young children. Bring along your skateboard or bike and challenge yourself at the Rotary skate park, or shoot some hoops in the multi-use sports box. Forgot to pack lunch? Head over to the concession stand for delicious home baked treats and meals. Only a few minutes down the road from Central Park, Rotary Park is the place to be when you need to cool off in the summer. Equipped with a spray park and a big playground, the riverside locale is the perfect place to plan a picnic and watch as golfers tee off at the nearby Merritt Golf and Country Club.
Shops, cafes, and the historic Coldwater Hotel make Quilchena Avenue a popular location if you’re looking to do a little shopping while you’re in Merritt. Local artisans sell their wares at a number of stores, while family-friendly eats are always only steps away. Head down to the riverfront and take a walk along the banks of the Coldwater River. Anytime of year, the scenic path is a good place to run, walk or simply sit in the shade and listen to the water. If it is raining — which doesn’t happen often — then why not bowl a couple games with the family at the Nicolanes Bowling Alley? Located on Coutlee Avenue, Nicolanes offers fivepin bowling for all ages. If your kids are toddlers then Fairley Park is the park to visit. This park was fundraised for and specially designed by the Merritt Fire Rescue Department for the smaller children. For a full list of parks in Merritt, visit merritt.ca.

REASON TO CELEBRATE Merritt knows how to put on a show. For years, the best and the brightest country music stars have graced the stage in the Nicola Valley, bolstering our claim to the title of the Country Music Capital of Canada. But it would be selling us short to say that we only know how to two-step — if country is not your thing, there is still plenty to see on stage in Merritt. The Bass Coast Electronic Music Festival is a phantasmagoric marriage of music, visual art and everything in between. In between the raucous beats from international performers, festival go-ers take part in yoga seminars, dance lessons and much more. For more information and to see the lineup, check out basscoast. ca. Thousands of music fans descend on the Nicola Valley every year to attend the Rockin’ River MusicFest, where the biggest names in country hit the stage every summer. Whether you’re enjoying a dip in the creek, or taking in a show in Merritt’s beautiful natural amphitheater, the festival experience in the Nicola Valley is one you will remember.

Pay homage to the one of the industries that built the city at the annual Logger’s Sports Show in Central Park. Watch the wood fly as some of the world’s best chainsaw carvers compete for the title in speed carving demonstrations. Keep your eyes peeled around town for past carvings on display at local businesses and city buildings as well. Magnificent crafts and incredible eats are served up with small town charm at the Nicola Valley Fall Fair. With thousands of categories to enter, from photography to baking to livestock, there are plenty of blue ribbons to be won. Show off your best moves at the harvest dance, a Nicola Valley tradition for over 100 years. Summer days are meant for music in the Nicola Valley. Free performances grace the stage each week as part of the city’s Music in the Park concert series. Or share your passion for classic cars at the Nicola Cruisers Show N’ Shine gathering in Central Park. For a full list of events, check out page 18 and 19.

GLIDE, HIKE OR RIDE Sun gleams off the snow capped hills in the Nicola Valley in the winter, inviting visitors and locals to partake in a plethora of outdoor adventures. Merritt’s mild winter weather serves as the perfect launching pad for a tour in the backcountry — on skis, snowmobiles or snowshoes. There is ‘snow’ experience like exploring the trails on a snowmobile. Whether you’re going for a rip, or looking to find some solitude by navigating through an ocean of untouched powder, there are plenty of places to satisfy your need for speed in the winter. Travel up the well-groomed trails on Thynne Mountain, taking time to weave in and out of the trees while the crisp alpine air takes your breath away. Up on Stoyoma Mountain, riders can follow the rugged trail to the crash site of a water bomber plane — still visible today. Advanced riders are welcome to take on Hooshum’s challenging terrain, a route which will have riders bounding over tracks and side hilling along curves. Once you’ve navigated the main attractions, link up with the Merritt Snowmobiling Club to find out where the locals like to ride. Exploring the Nicola Valley’s winter wonderland at a more leisurely pace is the name of the game at the Kane Valley Ski Trails, located off of Highway 97C, minutes outside of town. Members of the Nicola Nordic Ski Club keep more than 50 kilometres worth of trails in tip top shape during the season. Don’t forget to bring your camera. Or you can leave your skis in the shed, and tackle the Kane Valley like a true pioneer, equipped with a pair of snowshoes. At an elevation of 1,219 metres (4,000 feet), the Kane Valley trails get plenty of snow, and it sticks around for months. Thanks in large part to the Nicola Valley Explorers Club, plenty of snowshoe trails have been mapped and marked in the Kane Valley basin. Once the winter wonderland has you worn out, head back to Merritt to enjoy a well earned hot cocoa — and get ready to do it all again.

COUNTRY STARS COME TO LIFE The scenic vistas and stunning sunsets of the Nicola Valley have inspired more than a couple artists to try and capture the beauty of our region on the canvas. Colourful murals are splashed on buildings throughout the downtown area, making it clear that art has been woven into Merritt’s identity. Whether you’re a connoisseur of the arts or someone looking for inspiration on their next hobby project, Merritt’s streets are brimming with talent waiting to be explored. Start your day by grabbing a portable breakfast with a coffee to go. Strap on your comfy shoes for a tour through Merritt’s walkable downtown area, where countless buildings and stores are adorned with the murals designed by the renowned Michelle Loughery. Paying tribute to the country stars who have performed in Merritt, the massive murals were painted in part by locals, and are maintained each year by a group of high school students. When your legs get tired, it’s time for an afternoon pick me up. Stop by the Secret Door Art Gallery next to Brambles Cafe & Bakery (where you can refresh your coffee and grab a snack). The gallery features rotating exhibitions from artists both local and out-of-town — and depending on when you drop by, the space might also be playing host to musicians or round-table art discussions. 22

After taking in the artistic interpretations of the Nicola Valley, it’s time to get a dose of culture and history. The roots of the region are on display at the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives, where you can take a self-guided tour through Merritt’s winding history. From Coldwater Avenue, it’s a straight shot across town to the Courthouse Art Gallery on Nicola Avenue. The gallery is housed in one of Merritt’s most historic buildings; the former provincial courthouse. Now operated by the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council, the courthouse gallery is the focal point for artists in our community, with a rotating exhibition that changes month-to-month. A stop at the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame on Quilchena Avenue is an absolute must. Memorabilia and the facts about the finest country musicians in Canadian history adorn the walls of the hall of fame. You might even hear a local artist belting out a tribute to one of the inductees. When the evening rolls around, take a moment to kick back in Spirit Square to take in the sounds of the Nicola Valley. You might even be serenaded by a Music in the Park performance. Check online at merritt.ca to see when your favourites might be dropping by the city for a free performance.

CENTENNIALS PRIDE Sports are a way of life in Merritt. The city is the home of the longest continually running franchise in the British Columbia Hockey League — the Merritt Centennials. Every year, scores of athletes come through our town to compete in everything from volleyball tournaments, to professional rodeos. The atmosphere at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena is electric when the boys are in town. Stop by and catch a glimpse 26

of tomorrow’s NHL stars while you’re in town, and the foot stomping-excitement of Junior A hockey will make you a Cents fan for life. Every year, the finest cowboys in the country congregate in Merritt for the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo. The grandstands are packed as spectators watch cowboys and cowgirls compete for a spot at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Catch all the action over the Labour Day long weekend.
Meanwhile, the next generation of rodeo stars will stake their claim to the high school title at the Canadian High School Finals rodeo, which will be hosted in Merritt in 2019. We’re not all horses and hockey — Merritt boasts an enviable collection of high class recreational facilities as well, including the Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre, tennis courts, a curling arena and the Merritt Golf and Country Club. So come out and play.

HEAD OUT ON THE HIGHWAY Merritt sits at the nexus of the highway system in the B.C. Interior. No matter what direction you head out from, the scenery will have you in awe of your surroundings. Heading north on Highway 5A will take you on a winding route along the shores of Nicola Lake. Along the way, you’ll pass by the historic Nicola Ranch — a quaint, idyllic location which has preserved the landscape of a bygone country era. Take the road less traveled through the backcountry on Douglas Lake Road, where you’ll see rustic farmland, open ranges and undulating hills.

You’ll know when you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of life when the road turns to gravel. A ramble along Coldwater Road, one of B.C.’s premier motorcycle routes, is worth the trip. Ditch the motor for pedal power on the Kettle Valley Railway near Coldwater River — leaning into every bend in the road. In the opposite direction, Highway 8 towards Spences Bridge will take you through Lower Nicola, overlooking the valley below. Marvel in the beauty of the craggy hoodoos while pumping along the dips and curves of the road. Just remember to gas up first!

FUELLED BY ADRENALINE There is nothing quite like hearing the roar of the engines at a live racing event. Gearheads and casual fans alike will find no shortage of high-octane excitement in the Nicola Valley, as a wide variety of motorsports events are hosted in and around Merritt each year. Come get down and dirty when the North West Mud Racing Association comes to town in the summer. Vehicles ranging from street stock pickups to the blown-alcohol, 2,500-horsepower ‘Big Boys’, and everything in between tear through a 200-foot pit of mud at the festival grounds on the south end of town. If you’re going to sit close enough to see the mud fly, hearing protection is recommended. The Canadian Rally Championship series rolls through Merritt in the fall. Some of the top drivers in the country compete in the Pacific Forest Rally, which is a pivotal stop for the championship series. From the ceremonial start on Granite Avenue to the awards at the end of the weekend, the Pacific Forest Rally is a jam-packed weekend of racing fun in the Nicola Valley. See the local racers compete for glory at the Merritt Speedway, located 10 minutes outside of town on Highway 8. Racing weekends start in the spring, and feature both stock car racing and the wild, unpredictable chaos of flat track motorcycle races. Visitors can appreciate the classics up close at the annual Nicola Valley Cruisers Show ‘n’ Shine event in Central Park. Owners spend all year tuning up their vintage rides for the show, and with participants coming from all over the province, there is always something new to see. Fast or slow, on two wheels or four, there is something for the inner automobile maniac in all of us in the Nicola Valley.

CULTURAL IDENTITY Long before Merritt was a city, Interior Salish First Nations peoples roamed this great land. Stop by Monck Provincial Park to see evidence of ancient shelters called kekule-houses, and learn more about the people who first inhabited the Nicola Valley. The Nlaka’pamux, Syilx and the Secwepemc peoples are a part of the Interior Salish linguistic group. It is estimated that their ancestors migrated into the region as early as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Five First Nations bands — Coldwater, Lower Nicola, Upper Nicola, Nooaitch and Shackan —call the Nicola Valley home today. Their cooperation has led to development of the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, B.C.’s only indigenous post-secondary school, in Merritt.

First Nations culture is celebrated with an annual powwow on Indigenous Peoples Day in June. Drumming, dancing and delicious food are a staple of this event. Stop by the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives to learn more about the history of First Nations people in the Nicola Valley, featuring extensive exhibits of First Nations artifacts and intricate artwork. Traditional food with a modern twist is served up at Kekuli Cafe. Bannock donuts and ‘indian tacos’ are a favourite at this locally owned eatery. Support indigenous artists by shopping at Nlaka’pamux Creations, a local gallery which features the works of local First Nations.

THE GREAT ESCAPE Gorgeous weather, unbeatable scenery and access to some of the best outdoor adventures in the province makes Merritt an ideal place to pitch a tent during the summer. No B.C. road trip is complete without a stop to camp out under the clear skies in the Nicola Valley. The Claybanks RV Park and Campground offers spacious, well-maintained sites along the Coldwater River. The wellmaintained property is located close to downtown Merritt and many of the great activities offered in the area. Enjoy golfing, fishing, swimming, or just take in the beautiful flowers as you walk along the river. This petfriendly campground is open year-round and has heated washrooms, showers, a snack shop, and horseshoe pits. Located 38 kilometres south of Merritt, the Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park has incredible scenery. With beautiful lakes and local plant life, this picturesque park is a joy for any budding photographer. The park has some great lakeside trails if you are looking for a short walk from your campsite, as well as plenty of charming fishing spots for the avid angler.
Monck Provincial Park is located on the shores of Nicola Lake. This family campsite has a boat launch, playground and horseshoe pits, as well as a buoyed-off swimming area. The sandy beach makes for a nice place to spend a sunny afternoon — just be sure to remember your sunscreen, as summer days can get quite hot! The area is excellent for wildlife viewing, including a five-kilometre self-guided interpretive trail that loops around the park. South of Merritt along the Coldwater River, the Moon Shadows RV Park and Campground offers great camping all year-round. RV and tenting sites are set back in the trees and offer spectacular scenery to enjoy. Moon Shadows facilities include laundry, heated washrooms with showers, a gorgeous gazebo by the river, and a small convenience store. No matter where you stay, always make sure to follow campground rules and observe any fire bans which may be in effect during the summer. Check env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/ for more information before you head out.

A love story gone wrong. A doctor’s wife who died under mysterious circumstances. A stopping place for early travellers. The home of a Grand Master of the Masonic Order. Love, mystery and intrigue helped shape our heritage district and you can take it all in on a self-directed Heritage Walking Tour uncovering our storied past. Follow the signs to our visitor information booth at the Baillie House and pick up your walking guide. The Baillie House is also stop one along the tour. Choose to linger here for a while to experience some great activities; inscribe a letter on an old-fashioned typewriter, listen to a spine-tingling ghost story, or rest in the garden and sip coffee or lemonade in the shade of a lofty tree. Then hit the streets, walking in the footsteps of our history and the remaining 27 historical sites. You’ll see Merritt in a whole new light as you observe the architecture of the city’s yesterday and the narrative they created.
