FLOOD RELIEF

Flood relief rally for agriculture sees strong turnout

Though an Agri-Recovery program was announced the following day, local farmers held a peaceful rally on Sunday in support of one.

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

Morgan Hampton/Herald

Farmers, ranchers and their supporters gathered outside of Purity Feed on the morning of Feb. 6 for the Rally for Flood Relief for Farmers and Ranchers. Following extensive flooding on Nov. 15 of 2021, the provincial government promised to release an Agri-Recovery program which would assist those in agriculture who had been hard hit by the raging flood waters. However, nearly three months after the fact, and despite consistent lobbying, the program had yet to materialize as of early February. “We had a townhall organized for last weekend, but Ministry (of Agriculture) staff told us that it was definitely going to be announced soon, probably last, last Friday but definitely by early last week,” said Julia Smith, local area rancher and president of BC’s Small Scale Meat Producers Association. By 4 o’clock on Friday, Feb. 4, with still no word on the release of the AgriRecovery program, Smith, alongside Wayne and Rhonda MacDonald of Bar FX Ranch on Hwy 8, decided to organize an impromptu rally to draw attention to their plight. Rhonda MacDonald addressed the sizeable crowd from horseback on the sunny but cool morning. “This year we were hit with a double whammy with the Lytton Creek wildfire, we lost 20% of our cattle herd in the fire, and then in the middle of November we got hit with the floods again,” said MacDonald. “And like every other rancher and farmer along the valley bottom we lost not only infrastructure, but we lost valuable land as well.” Although the Agri-Recovery program was eventually announced the See ‘FARMERS’ Page 5

following day, for MacDonald and many others, it will nearly be a case of too little too late, with the situation only growing more dire the longer the government continues “dragging their heels”. Calving season is well underway, and spring is nearly upon the province, which leaves little time to address program application paperwork and logistics, as well as the more imperative issues of land and bank stabilization, replacement and repair of infrastructure, and an ongoing feed crisis. MacDonald hopes that the rally will not only inform the government, but also the non-ranching public, of just how serious the situation is. “There’s a lot of the general public that don’t know the position that farmers and ranchers are in,” said MacDonald. “Many of us lost several tons, or in our case, 300 tons of feed, that washed down the river. We’re not the only ones,

from the headwaters of the Coldwater River all the way down to the Fraser Valley all of the low lying farms and ranches are in the same position.” Scrambling to find feed in December and January is both risky and expensive, with hay costing at least double what it normally would, and that is without factoring in trucking costs that can add up quickly with bales being purchased from out of province or even out of country. “Many of us have maxed out our credit lines, people have gone to friends and family for loans, other people have maxed out credit cards,” said MacDonald. “It’s not an easy life we live, but you do what you have to do to feed your animals, sometimes at the expense of other things in your life... We really want to show the government that we are important, we supply part of the food for our population, and we can’t be ignored.”

LETTERS to the editor

Some refreshing kind words from resident Editor, Last week I started a Letter to the Editor to say thanks to Bonnie Cowan for her kind words of encouragement to all those who had worked so hard to help those who had been so badly impacted by the catastrophic flooding that hit our City. It was so refreshing to hear something positive. I didn’t get my letter done in time to send it off to the newspaper. Sorry, Bonnie. Sometimes life gets in the way of good intentions. So, let me state publicly that your kind words meant a lot – a sentiment shared by innumerable people in the

area, I am sure. I wish I could say the same for those folks who seemed to think they were supporting a good cause by honking their horns incessantly Saturday morning. I have no problem with folks participating in a protest – but, please, do so in a manner that respects the rights of others. We live in a democracy. We don’t force our opinions on others by bullying, intimidation and harassment. Civil disobedience is one thing – deliberately causing pain and stress to a population that is still reeling from the aftermath of the floods is just plain cruel. I do want to thank all those truckers

who have continued to supply goods and services throughout so many challenges. You are much appreciated. The noise, not so much. Also , a quick comment re: the ranchers’ and farmers’ march on Sunday. You showed how demonstrations can be done respectfully. Kudos to you. All the best in your endeavour. Kurt Christopherson Merritt, BC

Appreciation for post office employees Editor, This letter explains why I am writing to the Support Service Section associated with the Canada Post Cooperation. This is in regards to the main post office personnel and the staff of the Merritt, BC officer an honourable mention. I have been residing in Merritt, BC for some 25 years. I was born in Calgary, Alberta, where I grew up and served in the medical field for approximately 20 years. I did my education in Prince George, BC and the remainder in Calgary, where I graduated with my grade 12 certification. Proceeding to why I am giving the individuals of Canada Post in Merritt an honourable mention. To begin with, there are people like Cheryl, Gene, Jessica, Ryan, and the individuals who deliver to super boxes in other areas of Merritt. They take out their valuable time to please the public with issues of re-direction of mail, holding mail, etc. They also assist the public with buying stamps to send articles via priority post, express post, and paying for par-

cels and other items after they are cautiously checked by the post office staff. They go an extra mile to help the elderly to carry their parcels out to their vehicles. They also ask the public for their personal identification card in order to perform the verification before releasing certain articles. The post office also sells other articles such as one in a display case produced and manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint. I am also a Master Club Member through said organization. The depot also sells books on hockey and other memories in Canada’s history to the public. Many of us take the Canada Post for granted, but we should not. In this particular main office in Merritt, they do their utmost best in rain, snow, all year round, and even when they are short staffed, they do their best to get the mail out each day and keep the people happy. At Christmas time, when the rush is on, they do their best to keep cool and patient no matter what the situation is to get the mail out from point A to point B smoothly. This

She and her staff are very knowledgeable and helpful in all aspects. I would like to convey my highest regards to the entire staff of the Merritt post office, keep up the excellent high quality service to the citizens of Merritt, BC. We as citizens are all very proud of the entire team. It is a great honour and privilege to have each and every one of you working at Canada Post Cooperation in Merritt. From the Herald archives: Feb. 1972 WORKERS RETURN TO PIPELINE Merritt will be experiencing the same busy boom as it had last year with the pipeline work bringing 300 to 400 men back to carry on another looping program for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Company. Marine Pipeline Ltd. of Calgary holds the contract for this year’s work. Last year the pipeline construction work taxed all accommodation and services in town for the work that was being carried out in the vicinity, giving a good boost to the economy, and it is expected to have the same result this year.

Nine-figure Agri-Recovery program announced

Adopt a Pet

View your feature best friend @ www.angelsanimalrescue.ca

The day after local farmers rallied for provincial help, a $228-million program was announced.

Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM A much anticipated and long awaited flood recovery program for BC’s farmers and ranchers who suffered extensive damage during the Nov. 2021 flood event has now been announced. Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Lana Popham, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, have announced the Canada-BC Flood Recovery for Food Security Program, which will be delivered by the Government of British Columbia and will leverage the federal government’s AgriRecovery Framework and Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). The program will see $228 million distributed to those in the agricultural sector in the Southern Interior and Fraser Valley who were impacted by November’s flood event. “The B.C. agricultural community has pulled together and demonstrated its strength and determination in the face of devastating floods,” said Bibeau. “There is still a long way to go, but the Government of Canada will continue to work with

From Page 9 losses for many B.C. farmers and food producers, and we’re responding with a program that delivers the greatest amount of support of its kind in B.C.’s history,” said Popham. “We’ve worked closely with farmers and farming organizations to make sure we have a comprehensive response that will support their recovery, help them get their farms back in production, and continue our collective efforts to build a resilient food system and food economy in B.C.” The governments of Canada and British Columbia have also established a committee of ministers who are working together and with Indigenous leadership to guide immediate and ongoing support to British Columbia families, businesses and communities affected by the extreme weather events. Farmers who have already undertaken any work are advised to keep their receipts, track the hours of work involved, and take pictures documenting the damage and repairs to support their application. The 2021

flood disaster impacted more than 1,100 farms, 15,000 hectares and 2.5 million livestock from the Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford to the communities and areas surrounding Merritt and Princeton. The Government of British Columbia is disbursing recovery funding in two categories. Farms with less than $2 million in annual revenue will be eligible to receive up to 90% compensation, which the Province will seek reimbursement for through the federal government’s Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). Larger farms with annual sales over $2 million will be eligible to receive up to 70% compensa-

tion through the federal-provincial AgriRecovery initiative, which is cost-shared 60/40 respectively between governments. Those who need financial assistance in the following areas are encouraged to apply at gov. bc.ca/agrifloodrecovery: - support for flood cleanup that includes cleanup on lands and essential farm infrastructure that have been damaged due to floods; - support for the removal, repair or replacement of uninsurable farm structures and farm production equipment that have been damaged due to floods; - rental of essential alternate facilities or pasture required due to flooding;

- transportation costs for relocating livestock, feed available, water, stored crop and crop inputs due to floods; - replacement of lost feed for breeding livestock feed due to floods; - extraordinary costs for livestock feeding due to marketing delays caused by floods; - veterinary costs to treat livestock injured by floods; - support for uninsurable breeding livestock mortality losses caused by floods; - land preparation and replanting costs for perennial crop plants that have been killed by flooding and crop land damaged by flooding; -support for destroyed beehives and associated colonies.

Bullying Prevention Awareness PINK SHIRT DAY - Feb 23, 2022 Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and online. Over the month of February, and throughout the year, CKNW Kids’ Fund’s Pink Shirt Day aims to raise awareness of these issues, as well as raise funds to support programs that foster children’s healthy self-esteem. THEIR STORY Now a movement celebrated across the globe, Pink Shirt Day has humble beginnings. Inspired by an act of kindness in small-town Nova Scotia, CKNW Kids’ Fund, working with partners Boys & Girls Clubs and 980 CKNW, was inspired to raise funds to support anti-bullying programs. Here is a snippet of an article detailing the original incident: “David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in

sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. ‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’ So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled. The

bullies were never heard from again.” — GLOBE & MAIL After David and Travis’ act of kindness in 2007, CKNW was inspired to help other youth affected by bullying, with many staff members wearing pink shirts and collecting funds to support Boys and Girls Clubs. Since then, the idea has only grown each year, with worldwide support and participation. Countries across the globe are now organizing anti-bullying fundraisers of their own, including Japan, New Zealand, China, Panama, and numerous others. In fact, last year alone, people in almost 180 countries shared their support of Pink Shirt Day through social media posts and donations. https://www.pinkshirtday.ca/about

Internet access is no longer limited to desktop or laptop computers. World Advertising Research Center, using data from mobile trade body GSMA, says almost three-quarters of internet users, or roughly 3.7 billion people, will access the internet exclusively via smartphones by 2025. Young people are one of the largest demographics utilizing smartphones today. A Common Sense Media survey says just over half of children in the United States now own a smartphone by the age of 11. In addition, 84 percent of teenagers have their own phones. Most youth grew up with the internet, and they have embraced a variety of apps, particularly social media apps, that connect them to the world. Social media certainly can be an asset, but it has inherent risks, such as making kids easy targets for identity theft or sexual predators. Other apps expose users to explicit, unfiltered content. Parents must educate themselves about the popular apps their tweens and teens may be using and weigh their pros and cons. Here’s a list of apps every parent should know in 2020. • TikTok: This app (formerly Musical.ly) is designed for creating and sharing short videos, notably music videos. Users are urged to express their creativity, and special effects can be added. While minimum age for use is 13, there is no real way to validate users’ ages so anyone can download the app. Parents say the videos are plagued by inappropriate language and content, including

pornographic material. Also, some have warned that when sexual predators are identified, the app is slow to flag and remove these users. • Kik: This is a cross-platform messaging app that enables users to chat anonymously without the need for phone service. Users also can share most digital media and video chat with one another. Forbes reports that Kik has had issues with child exploitation and sexual harassment. • Tellonym: The web resource FamilyEducation says this messenger app allows kids to ask and answer questions anonymously, purporting to be the “most honest place on the internet.” Cyber bullying and violent threats are common, according to watchdog groups. • MeetMe: This social app advertises its ability to have users meet new people through messages, video calls and live streams. With no option to set privacy limitations, users can freely view other profiles within the vicinity. Also, reaching out to others and viewing profiles generates in-app reward incentives. • Bigo Live: Common Sense Media says this app is like YouTube and Twitch in that Bigo Live lets users stream live video of themselves that others can see and comment on in real time. People also can send and receive “beans,” which are virtual gifts that cost real money. The warning is that Bigo has a lot of mature content and predatory commentary. Yolo: Yolo is an easy add-on for Snapchat, which also is a popular app among children. Yolo lets users ask anonymous questions and receive feedback. The anonymity of commentary can be a recipe for bullying, trolling and hurt feelings. Parents can safeguard their children by monitoring internet access and understanding popular apps used by today’s youth.

• Think carefully before you post comments online. Data remains online indefinitely, and your words and actions today can greatly affect your future. • Respect others online by refraining from demeaning or bullying comments. • Do not try to get around firewalls and blocked websites set up by school administrators. These limitations are there for your protection. • Stick to school-sanctioned assignments and internet browsing when using school-issued devices. Administrators may have the right to monitor student activity without students’ knowledge and you can easily get yourself in trouble. • It is easy to hide or fake one’s identity on the internet, so never take someone you meet or speak with online at face value. Never meet up with someone you do not know or only met online. • Talk to your parents or educators about extortion and ransomware that tries to trick you into providing payment in some shape or form to prevent a perpetrator from releasing private information about you, advises the Readiness and Emergency for Schools Technical Assistance Center. Various steps can be taken to promote cyber safety among students, parents and administrators.

Say “NO” to Bullying

FRIENDS

BULLYING www.dentistryatmerritt.ca 2731 Forksdale Ave., Merritt

People rely on the internet every day. In recent months, reliance on digital technology was pushed even further as social distancing measures had the world going online for school and work and to maintain relationships with friends and family. A 2018 report from Pew Research Center indicated that nearly 25 percent of young adults in America reported being online almost constantly. Common Sense Media says teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to roughly six hours for those between the ages eight and 12 and 50 minutes for kids younger than eight. Students must exercise caution when spending time online. Connectivity can be empowering, but it also puts students at risk from others and even their own, sometimes irresponsible behaviors. Staying safe online should remain a priority for students who must spend more time on the internet and using digital education tools. These are some tips for maintaining cyber safety. • Exercise caution when sharing information like your name, address, phone number, and other personal data online. Check with a trusted parent or teacher before sharing private data. • Report any online activity that makes you feel uncomfortable, scared or confused, whether it is directed at you or a classmate.

Falcon named new Liberal leader Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM

Kevin Falcon has been elected as the new leader of the BC Liberal Party. Following the snap election called by Premier John Horgan in Sept., 2020, former BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson stepped down. Prince George area MLA Shirley Bond served as interim leader, but as of Feb. 5, Kevin Falcon was officially elected to the leadership role. Falcon competed against six candidates who threw their hat in the ring for a chance to lead the party. Political strategist Gavin Dew, VancouverLangara MLA Michael Lee, Skeena MLA and former chief councillor of the Haisla Nation Ellis Ross, former CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce Val Litwin, MLA for Kelowna-Mission Renee Merrifield, and president of Cielo Properties Inc. Stan Sipos. Dew, Litwin, Merrifield and Sipos were dropped from the field after four ballots. Lee placed third, garnering roughly 14% of the vote while Ross came in second at nearly 34%, trailing well behind Falcon who secured just over 52% of the vote.

“Trust in politics and politicians has never been lower,” said Falcon, following his leadership win. “Politicians make all kinds of promises, but so often nothing actually gets done. And some people feel polarized, some are apathetic and so many more are just disillusioned with the entire political process. There is a desire like I’ve never seen before for candor, for confidence and for leadership and there is also a desire for leaders who will bring people together and who recognize that while we might mightily disagree about policy, we can do so without making it personal.” Falcon also noted that the BC Liberal Party would “embrace diversity” and that all would be welcome in the party. While the 59-year-old left politics for the private sector a decade ago to spend time with his young family, which consists of a wife and two daughters, Falcon is no stranger to public office, having formerly served as MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale and as Minister of Finance, Minister of Health, Minister of Transportation, Minister of State for Deregulation of BC, and as Deputy Premier in former Liberal Governments.

Members of the Merritt Centennials presented Merritt Rotary Club President Leslee Lucy with a donation of $2,179 for flood relief victims last week. The generous funding was a combined effort between fellow BCHL organization the Penticton Vees and the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame. In Merritt’s first game back on Nov. 26 against the Vees, their first game back after the mid-November flooding events, the Vees donated their 50/50 and Chuck-A-Puck earnings to the Cents, totalling $904. The BC Hockey Hall of Fame followed up with a donation of $1,275.

Quilters nationwide quilt for Merritt Morgan Hampton REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM The devastating flooding of November, 2021, which caused widespread damage and prompted the evacuation of the entire city of Merritt, drew attention from across the country that has continued through the recovery phase. Now, quilters from Huntsville,

Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba are sending 50 handmade quilts and eight knitted blankets to students of Merritt Central Elementary School, one of the institutions hardest hit by the raging Coldwater River. When Mary Spring from Huntsville heard

about the flooding and the fact that students had been relocated to makeshift classrooms in Crossroads Church and Nicola Valley Evangelical Free Church, she immediately put out a call for local quilters. This included her sister, Andrea Bell Stuart, who enlisted the help of her own quilting community in Winnipeg. “Volunteer

quilters responded quickly, sewing, professionally quilting and binding beautiful quilts to wrap around children affected by loss from the flooding,” said Teri Howell, Spring’s friend and fellow quilter. “It is the hope of the many quilters and knitters that their work will be distributed among the families affected as a token of our care and concern about all that they have lost. Blankets universally provide warmth and hugs.” The project, dubbed the Western Flood Relief Quilt Project, was funded in part by a grant from the Ontario Winter Games Legacy Fund with quilters donating their time and most

materials. Spring believes roughly 40 quilters have taken part in the initiative. Both Howell and Spring are retired elementary school teachers who have been quilting for 30 years and now teach children to sew. The quilts have now been boxed up and shipped via a transport company who offered delivery free of charge. “Each one has a hand- written letter of support from its creator to the new owner,” said Howell. “We anticipate the arrival of the quilts in Merritt BC in mid-February... In these troubling times it’s great to celebrate sharing and kindness from one community to another.”

Jeannine Alexina HAMM

April 22, 1931 ~ January 26, 2022 Jeannine Alexina Hamm ( St Jean ) born April 22, 1931, surrounded by family, passed away peacefully on January 26th, 2022, at the age of 90, at the Williams Lake Seniors Village. She was born in River Valley Ontario. Survived by her children Claire (Rick), Dennis (Kathy), George, Marcel, Allen (Vickie), Kathleen (Tracy), Tyrone (Virginia). Along with 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren. Sisters Georgette, Frances, Pauline and many nieces and nephews. Married to Cornelius (Jim), on April 22,1948. They spent 72 beautiful years together before Dad passed on February 13th, 2020 at the age of 96. Many years were spent farming in Ontario, and Mining in Bralorne. Their home was the gathering of friends, family and anyone else who wanted to join in on the singing and dancing. Mom & Dad loved to have a good time, whether it was camping along a river, getting firewood for the winter, or sitting at a campfire sipping on Southern Comfort, you would see one if not both of them with a grandchild on their knee laughing having a great time. The family would like to thank Dr McLeod, long time family friend, and staff, for always being there when needed. Thank you to the many care givers at the Williams Lake Senior’s Village, Dr. LaBossier, Dr. Creek. A special thank you to Kelly, Chantelle, and Taylor who mom took under her wing. You can bet they have some stories to tell. Love you ladies. Words can not express how grateful the family is to Vickie for being mom’s full time nurse, her voice when needed, her companion, her best friend, many laughs were had and there are more stories to be shared. Thank you for giving mom the best care unselfishly without hesitation, when our health facilities are so over worked and understaffed. You are an Angel Vickie, we love you.Thank you to Angela for helping us through this difficult time. Mom and Dad are together forever in our hearts.

Cornelius Hamm (Jim) December 16th 1924 ~ February 13th 2020

Jim was one of 16 children born and raised on a farm in Haghue SK to Peter Hamm and Margaret Janzen. In 1948 he met and fell in love with his beautiful wife Jeannine St Jean. Over the years they moved multiple times between Ontario and BC where they raised their seven children. Jim truly enjoyed providing for his family, proven in his dedicated hard work in many different professions. Over the years this included, but is not limited to, farming, logging, mining and managing a sanitary landfill. When Jim was not working, he and Jeannine loved to create and design greenware ceramics. He also enjoyed recycling, gardening and baking. He was always out hunting and harvesting fir trees to keep his home toasty warm. In 1979 they planted their roots in Lower Nicola BC where they continually opened their hearts and home to friends and family alike. In 1982 they completed their family when they adopted their eighth child Tyrone, who was born to their youngest son Allen. Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones, just after 3 am on February 13. Predeceased by his mother, father, all siblings and his third born son Bobby. Survived by his loving wife Jeannine Hamm, Claire (Rick), Dennis (Kathy), George, Marcel, Allen (Vickie), Kathy (Tracy), Tyrone (Virginia), 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and loved ones. The family would like to thank the Nicola Valley General Hospital, Dr Simpson, Dr Goetz and the entire medical staff that kept him comfortable in his final days. Thank you to Dr Vander Merwe for the excellent care over the years. In lieu of flowers please make donations to a lung cancer foundation in memory of Cornelius (Jim) Hamm.
