waste disposal and recycling facility as well as a park in Lower Nicola are two of the capital projects on the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s (TNRD) list this year. In a news release published on Jan. 4, TNRD announced that the 2024 capital plan includes spending a total of $11,735,901, approximately $1.1 million less than the capital budget in 2023. One of their significant capital projects that are included in the 2024

cling baler, budgeted at $960,000, and improvements at Lower Nicola’s Smith Pioneer Park, budgeted at $290,000. Other projects include a next generation 911 upgrade for TNRD regional fire departments, water and wastewater treatment plants for Pritchard, a fire hall project in Monte Creek and library upgrades in Clearwater. According to the release, the 2024 Capital Plan will be 56 per cent funded by reserves, 35 per cent will be funded by grant funds while 8 per cent will be funded by borrowing. In addition, one per cent of fund-

ing for the plan will be by donations specifically for the Loon Lake Fire Hall project. Barbara Roden, TNRD board chair, said in the release that the finance department improved its budgeting process, which resulted in transparency and clarity for costs of services and realistic objectives for asset management planning. “With an approved Capital Plan in place to start the new year, the TNRD can tender large capital projects as early as possible and ensure best available pricing for services.”

Charges pending for gas station chaos arrest A man was taken into custody after bringing chaos to a local gas station. According to Merritt RCMP, last Wednesday, Jan. 3, a man entered Canco and caused issues inside the gas station’s store. Mounties said that the man left before police arrived and workers at the gas station didn’t want to press charges. However, the same individual was seen throwing rocks at the same gas station on the following day, Jan. 4.

Soup is the unsung hero of the kitchen, it is one of the healthiest meals and, a comforting and versatile choice that never goes out of style. It’s like a warm hug for your taste

buds, and with a dash of creativity, you can transform any ordinary meal into an extraordinary experience. Let’s talk simplicity. Soup is the epitome of easy cooking. Throw some veggies, broth, and protein of your choice into a pot, and you’ve got a one-pot wonder in the making. The key? Keep it simple! Fresh herbs are the secret weapon. Toss in a handful of basil, thyme, or cilantro to elevate your soup to new f lavor heights. It’s like a mini herb garden in a bowl. Now, let’s break free from

the culinary rut. Feeling adventurous? Try something new! Experiment with exotic spices or unique ingredient combinations. Soup is a canvas, and you’re the artist. Add a pinch of cumin, or a squeeze of lime for an unexpected twist. Remember, less is more. Don’t overcrowd your soup with a million ingredients. Let the f lavors mingle and dance in the pot. A few high-quality, fresh ingredients can speak volumes, turning a simple soup into a gourmet masterpiece. Soup can be a part of your weight loss program. Swap

heavy creams for Greek yogurt or coconut milk. Choose lean proteins and load up on colorful veggies. Regularly consuming soup has been linked to a lower body weight. Careful about canned soups they often are high in sodium. Best to make them at home if possible. So, let’s embrace the simplicity, add a sprinkle of herbs, and have some fun in the kitchen. Soup’s on! For my favorite soup recipe from Italy contact me at heartnotes2@gmail.com or text me at 604-314-9233.

MURDOCH’S OFFICE Walking into Alastair Murdoch’s spartan accounting office, a haven of organization with files folded and pins pushed, one wouldn’t expect anything but a strictly business attitude from the occupant within. LETTER to the editor

Grant in Aid policy needs wider scope Editor,

I was reading the January 4th Merritt Herald regarding possible changes for the City’s Grant in Aid policy. I wanted to add some points for consideration as there may be a policy review by the City’s Policy Committee. As an active volunteer and former President of the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council, I have completed many Grant in Aid applications, I’ve also supported the development of the City’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Policy and feel that in order to have a fruitful review, and clarify the City’s interests in the Grant in Aid Program, it should include a wider scope and participation by stakeholders. This review must not be a bureaucratic project that results in a report on a shelf. It must include the organizations and individuals that receive funding. There are some organizations that have unique requirements and terms of reference under their constitutions, that are outside the scope of the Grant in Aid Policy, but are a valuable asset to the Community. That needs to come to light so we can keep improving life in Merritt. There are many great organizations within this City. They rely on City support to keep going. This support enables organizations to pursue addition-

al grants, from foundations and other levels of government, proving that they are more than special interest groups, and that they have strong relationships with their community. Volunteers and directors of our organizations are constantly scrambling to keep their doors open and programs afloat as volunteerism is on the decline. And it should be noted that our volunteers improve our world on countless fronts, starting at home in Merritt. Support through the Grant in Aid program demonstrates a commitment to stability, enabling quality community programs and events to continue. Many of our organizations need to be able to rely on City funding so they can focus on planning and programming. If the City doesn’t support those volunteers and their pursuits which weave a healthy social fabric, then the alternative is to close the doors and let Merritt slide into a struggling, industrial-based city with little to offer prospective new-comers and long-time residents alike.

Uncovering the forgotten Middlesboro Mine disaster

Photos of Middlesboro mine and surrounding areas in the 1930s. Photo/B.C. Bureau of Mines and Nicola Valley Museum & Archives.

Cameron Bridge MERRITTHERALD.COM

W

hile the Diamond Vale Mine Disaster is a well-known tragedy within the community, it was unfortunately not the only mining tragedy in Merritt’s history. A few months prior to the Diamond Vale Mine Disaster on Dec. 3, 1911, disaster struck at the Middlesboro No. 2 Mine. The first shift had just finished for the day at 3 p.m. and the second shift was about to start working. It is noted in the Nicola Valley News that it appears that where the men would unfortunately meet their untimely end, a “shot” (explosive meant to dislodge coal from coal seams) hadn’t properly gone off. Instead, it had partially ignited the coal, creating Whitedamp – a noxious gas that comes from burning coal in a confined area, composed largely of carbon monoxide. When arriving at the mine, the Fireboss, Wiliam Hallinan, warned them of the potential dangers and advised them to

stay away from the cross-section until he could inspect it properly with them. While there were no witnesses to the accident, it is generally believed by those at the time that Dusion Vuchmirovich, a 25-year-old Serbian man, was the first to enter the cross section where the Whitedamp was located, having either misunderstood the instructions or not believing in the potential danger. Robert Dishart, 28 years old, either found him or similarly decided to risk it, and in an attempt to rescue Vuchmirovich also succumbed to the noxious gasses. It’s then believed that Alex Thompson, 16 years old, heard the cries of Dishart and tried to rescue the pair, but met the same fate. When Hallinan arrived around 4:30 p.m. to do the inspection, he saw that the men were nowhere to be found, and in searching for them found the three and realized what had happened.

Changes to the Mining Act From Page 8 He tried to rescue Thompson, but was unable to hold his breath for long enough, and so sent for a rescue team and the local doctor. Dr. Williams attempted to resuscitate the three, but unfortunately was unable to do so. Middlesboro ceased operations for the remainder of that day and the next. Dusion Vuchmiorvich was buried in Washington at the request of his friends, both Robert Dishart and Alex Thompson are buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery. On the day of Dishart and Thompson’s funerals, the stores closed and a large portion of the town turned out to pay their respects. An inquiry held a couple weeks after the tragedy concluded that their deaths were a result of an accident, caused by inhalation of carbon monoxide. The inquiry also recommended changes to the Mining Act to take better care of men’s lives in the cases of burnt shot. Bail granted to teen accused of stabbing man 11 times

Tim Petruk CASTANET

A teenaged girl from Merritt has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing an acquaintance 11 times during an altercation last week. The 15-year-old girl cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She was arrested and charged following an incident Friday. During a brief hearing Monday in Kamloops provincial court, Crown prosecutor Garry Hansen said the teen admitted her guilt to police after the incident. “The allegations are that [she] stabbed [the complainant] 11 times in the back and shoulder due to being angry that he was hanging out with her boyfriend,” he said. Hansen said another man was stabbed twice during

the same altercation, but charges have not been laid in relation to that allegation. The 21-year-old man who was stabbed 11 times was treated at Royal Inland Hospital for non-lifethreatening injuries, police said. The 22-year-old man who was reportedly stabbed twice has not been located by police, but his injuries are not believed to be serious. In addition to the stabbing, Hansen said the girl is also accused of carving the word “liar” into her boyfriend’s PlayStation and urinating in his bedroom. The teen, who has no previous criminal record, was released on bail Monday, ordered to live

Fatal crash at Coquihalla

with her mother in another community and barred from entering the City of Merritt. Castanet is not

naming the community to avoid identifying the teen. The girl was also ordered to undergo a psychological assessment. She is due back in court on Feb. 20.

Nothing new in the New Year! Merritt Centennials suffer 0-5 thrashing in a lop-sided contest against West Kelowna Warriors ahead of packed weekend Harit Joshi MERRITTHERALD.COM It wasn’t the kind of start Merritt Centennials would have expected to kick start the New Year after receiving 0-5 thrashing at the hands of West Kelowna Warriors in their away game on January 5. This was by far the only one-sided contest between the two teams who have clashed for six times this season with the Cents winning twice. The first period was fought closely with both teams having a shy at the goal post 10 times each. However, Jack Pridham found the net just 39 seconds after play kicked off to provide a 1-0 lead for the Warriors. His teammate Brennan Nelson doubled the lead for the Warriors in the 13th minute, providing a significant boost to the team’s morale. The disappointing opening period prompted the Cents to change their goalie with new recruit Dylan Adams taking over the charge from Karlis Mezsargs in the second period. There was, however, no change to their fortunes as the Warriors struck for the third time in the game through Viggo Nordstrom in the 13th minute. The second period also saw a dramatic fall in the Cents’ shots on the goal

(four) as compared to the Warriors (12). The Cents further depleted in the final period, literally giving up on putting up any fight with the Warriors.

The home team landed final blows on the Cents by striking twice in the span of five minutes. Warriors’ centreforward Jackson Kyrkostas scored his 14th goal of the season after an assist from Nelson in the 11th minute. Pridham, who was penalized for slashing, struck immediately after coming on to the ice for the second time in the game. The seventh-placed Cents (26 points) are now just one

point shy of laggards Prince George Spruce Kings (25) in the league’s standings. The Cents have a busy action-packed weekend, starting with Cranbrook Bucks, who occupy the sixth spot with 30 points, on January 12 at home. The Cents can take confidence from their last two meetings against the Bucks where they beat them 5:4 and 4:2 in backto-back games in October. The Cents then travel to play Salmon Arm Silverbacks for the first time this season before heading to clash against familiar opponents West Kelowna Warriors on January 14.

Ballerinas are magical

Laísa Condé when she was only two NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM years old, when she startIn the spotlight of the dance scenario, a local talented young dancer is making waves with an extraordinary string of successes at dance competitions. Kate Van Rensburg just came back from the biggest dance competition in the world called Youth America Grand Prix. She competed in both Ballet and Contemporary, and was judged by five judges with credentials from renowned ballet companies. More than 700 entries and dancers ranged in age from nine to 18, competing in their respective age categories. She received 90.375 out of 100 for each of her solo entries. Van Rensburg said that she always gives her best in every event she performs. “No matter if it was a competition or a small concert. The older you get however, the bigger and more important it becomes,” she said. Her latest performance was in front of 4800 audience members over six performances in total. “I also received the Peppermint soloist role for the Nutcracker after auditioning, which was a great honour,” she added. But her love for dancing began

ed with “moms’ and tots ballet classes.” Van Rensburg said that she can’t put into words how she feels when she dances. “When I dance on stage it makes me feel like a princess because there is a whole room looking at me dance,” she said. “That makes me nervous but when the music starts and the lights are bright I feel at home.” As someone who pushes to do the best she can while on and off stage, Van Rensburg said that she dances 17 hours a week in two different cities, Kamloops and Kelowna, which comes with many challenges. “Because I train so many hours, I sometimes get injured, like any athlete would,” she said. “And yes! Dance is a sport, just like hockey, track (and field) or figure skating. When you reach a certain level the training is hard on your body.” Van Rensburg describes ballerinas as “magical” and said that dancing relieves the stress she experiences outside the studio. She called her last performance “Nutcracker” a wish granted. “Dancing on stage with professional dancers, company members from Ballet Kelowna was like a dream come true.”
