Frustration grows as residents rally against ER closures
In a powerful display of unity and determination, Merrittonians gathered on the streets on July 13 to protest against the temporary closure of their only emergency room.
Holding signs that read “Someone Is Going To Die” and “No More ER Closures”, the protesters made it clear that their access to emergency medical care was not something they were willing to sacrifice.
The latest temporary closure announcement made by Interior Health was on July 12, which closed the emergency room for 13 hours, from 7 p.m. Wednesday (July 12) to 8 a.m. Thursday (July 13).
During this latest closure, a medical incident happened right at the parking lot of the Nicola Valley Hospital. According to Dave Tomkinson, Merritt’s fire chief, a person was having trouble breathing and communicating with firefighters.
Tomkinson said in an email that “despite the ambulance station being attached to the hospital”, his crew were “ahead of the paramedics by several minutes as they were an out-of-town crew.” The victim ultimately had to be taken by ambulance to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, 85 kilometres away.
In May, Interior Health Authority told the Herald that staff recruitment and retention efforts for the Nicola Valley were ongoing, with the closures being a last resort measure to address staffing shortages
caused by the overall vacancies, shortnotice sick calls, and vacation time.
ER closures have been quite the problem for the community of Merritt. Only in 2023, the Nicola Valley Hospital’s emergency room has closed temporarily 11 times due to doctors or nursing shortages.
One of the protesters, Tony Luck, said the closures leave the community feeling frustrated.
“There were people there (at the hospital) that were told to go home because the ER was closing,” he said. “If I’m sitting there waiting to see a doctor because I’m in pain and the ER gets closed, and I get sent home, it doesn’t seem like a good thing to be happening.”
The frustration seems to be a feeling that Mayor Mike Goetz knows pretty well. He said his level of frustration is nearing the boiling point after the latest closure.
“I’m disappointed in the fact that our hospital can’t stay open to service the people,” he said.
The mayor said staffing shortage and other issues happen in bigger cities, such as Surrey, Vancouver, or Kamloops but those are taken care of very quickly.
“It seems to be very normal for a smaller community, or village to have their hospital closed without anybody thinking anything of it from the government,” he said. “So they’ve (the provincial government) got to have the same game plan that they do for the big cities for the smaller cities and villages.”
He also reminded that the Nicola Valley Hospital is a key health service not only to the community of Merritt, but also to the
five First Nations bands and people who live rurally in the countryside.
“A lot of them either don’t get the notice that we are closed because they’re not on Voyant. They drive into town only to find out the hospital is closed,” the mayor said. “It affects everybody around us, it also affects every single person that’s driving through Merritt on the Coquihalla.”
Mayor Goetz said he has requested the Interior Health Authority (IHA) to investigate the emergency room closures happening so often, but never received an answer on whether they are looking into it.
“As the City (of Merritt), we will continue to push forward. As the mayor, I’ll continue to push work,” he said.
Joining the protest to show support, City Councillour Dana Egan said it is frustrating to see the community not getting the health service they need.
“They (the community of Merritt) have to rely on the ER and if something happens, whether they have chest pain or a broken bone, they can’t be treated here,” she said. “They have to go to either Kamloops or Kelowna, which is ridiculous.”
Luck hopes that as the protests continue, the community gets the problem fixed soon.
“It is the community that we are fighting for. You don’t need the ER today, but you might need it tomorrow,” he said. “It’s important that we all get out and make sure that our voices are heard … we want things fixed in our hospital.”
Local racer Adam Lebeau is tearing up the track at the Merritt Speedway in Shulus for a good cause. Lebeau has been raising funds for those afflicted by breast cancer, and all other types of cancer, for a number of years.
The BC Overland Rally, a multiday event featuring camping and other outdoor activities, will return to Merritt this week for a second consecutive year. The event takes place this weekend at the Merritt Music Festival Grounds.

Interior Health announces closure of Nicola Lake beaches
which can be poisonous to people, pets and livestock, such as cows and sheep.
Interior Health announced the closure of Nicola Lake beaches, northeast of Merritt, due to a toxic algae bloom.
The closure was issued last Thursday, July 13, and it impacts the entire lake, including Monck Provincial Park, located off Highway 5A.
According to Interior Health’s website, cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, “commonly grow in shallow, still waters, and are a natural part of the aquatic environment.”
The cyanobacteria is known to produce toxins called microcystins,

The agency also recommends the public to stay out of the water and not use it as drinking water.

TEGART: ‘grieving the loss of a leader and bright light’
the news that she died in an apparent hit-and-run near Valemount, enroute to visit family. It’s my sincerest hope someone will come forward to take responsibility, and anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP in Valemount.
I was left reeling by
It’s incredibly heartbreaking to lose a community leader who, as Merritt Mayor Michael Goetz stated, was such a bright light. I got to know Claire when she served as a councillor in Logan Lake, where she made a number of positive contributions to the community over 14
years. She brought the same enthusiasm and positivity to her council work in Merritt. Whether it was a face-to-face meeting to discuss challenges and devise solutions, or something as simple as a social media post, Claire always offered thoughtful advice and encouragement — exuding optimism and a desire to work together to achieve great things for our communities.
I want to extend my deepest condolences to Claire’s family, friends, colleagues on council, and everyone who was touched by her posi-
tive spirit. I thank those who came to council chambers at Merritt City Hall this past week to share a story or memory of Claire, and to leave kind words of remembrance for her loved ones. My thoughts are also with her former colleagues in Logan Lake, who recently shared one of Claire’s quotes — “when you can’t find the sunshine, try being the sunshine.” It’s something we can all strive to do, to carry forward Claire’s legacy and bring a bit of hope and optimism to those around us. She will truly be missed.

Prescription drug coverage in Canada
Editor,
We Canadians continue to be the world’s sole nation that has universal healthcare but no similar coverage of prescribed medication, however necessary.
Not only is medication less affordable, but other research has revealed that many lowincome outpatients who cannot afford to fill their prescriptions
end up back in the hospital system as a result, therefore costing far more for provincial and federal government health ministries than if the medication had been covered.
Ergo, in order for the industry to continue raking in huge profits, Canadians and their health, as both individual consumers and a taxpaying collective, must lose out big time.
Also, I don’t believe it is just coincidental that the only two health professions’ appointments for which Canadians are fully covered by the public plan are the two readily pharmaceutical-prescribing psychiatry and general practitioner health professions.
Such non-Big-Pharma-profiting health specialists as counsellors, therapists and naturopaths
(etcetera) are not covered at all. So, while we are often envied abroad for our “universal” healthcare system, our health may soon-enough come second to profit maximization, in particular those insatiably amassed by the pharmaceutical industry.
Frank Sterle White Rock, B.C.
ALBAS: ‘should the federal government ght in ation?’
Payments are based on income, with the same cut-offs as the current GST credit limits.
Maximum payments range from $234 for a single individual to up to $628 for a family of four.
Some have asked if there is a requirement to purchase groceries or submit receipts from grocery stores to be eligible for this program? The answer is no; there is no such requirement.
July 15, please contact my office for assistance.
Single individuals who earn over $52,225 and families with two children earning over $62,175 do not qualify for any GST credit amount. This income cut-off is similar to other government rebate programs at both federal and provincial levels.
sible for many, and those carrying other types of debt with variable interest face the same problem.
COUNCIL STAYS SMALL
Making a tiebreaking decision on the need for six alderman for the Town of Merritt, Mayor Allan Collett voted against the motion saying he is not inclined to agree that the four aldermanic positions at present are “overworked.”
The urging to re-consider the need for six alderman came from the Merritt Chamber.
Last week, eligible individuals who receive GST credit payments may have also received an additional “grocery rebate” distributed as of July 5, 2023.
What is the grocery rebate?
It is a one-time payment to eligible families and individuals based on their 2021 income tax return. Note that filing a tax return for 2021 is mandatory to be eligible for this program.
It has also been asked why this rebate is called a “grocery rebate” if there is no requirement to purchase groceries? The answer is that it is a political term used by the government to suggest that it is addressing rising grocery prices created partly by the government’s carbon tax regime.
Eligible individuals should expect to receive their one-time grocery rebate payment by July 15. If you believe you are eligible but have not received payment by
As an example, consider a family with two adult students still living at home due to the inability to afford to live elsewhere. Their household income is nearly $90,000, so they do not benefit from any government rebate program. However, their monthly mortgage payment has gone from $1982 to $3254, an increase of $1,272 a month, or over $15,000 annually, taken out of their net household income.
Many families are experiencing financial losses despite wellpaying jobs. Covering local property tax due in July is now impos-
Unfortunately, the Trudeau Liberal government continues to make little effort in combating inflation. Adding new Clean Fuel Regulations, higher carbon taxes, and annual escalator excise tax has, in turn, created more madein-Canada inflation.
These policies also affect small business owners, significantly impacting freight and trucking expenses within Canada. Purchasing goods made outside of Canada from regions that do not impose such taxation measures is more affordable but unhealthy for Canadian manufacturers, producers, and consumers, who get stuck with higher prices.
This week’s question is: Should the federal government do more to fight inflation -- why or why not?

Community gathers for annual Airport Day celebrating aviation
A number of Merrittonians took to the skies, or at least the airport, to celebrate aviation in the Nicola Valley last weekend. Hundreds of locals and visitors filtered through the third annual Community Airport Day at Merritt’s Saunders Field on Saturday (July 15).
A celebration of the 100th anniversary of an airplane first landing in Merritt, the first Community Airport Day was the brainchild of Goeff Scholtens and friend Ray Robinson. A few years later, the event is still going strong, celebrating the wider topics of aviation and community connection.
The event featured a number of returning staples, including helicopter rides, food trucks, vendors, classic cars, planes, and a paper airplane throwing contest.
With its plethora of offerings both old and new, Community Airport Day landed well with Merrittonians.

Attracting crowds with its extravagant rides and community atmosphere, the Nicola Valley Cruisers Car Club’s annual Show ‘n’ Shine is sure to impress for its 29th annual car show at Central Park.
The Show ‘n’ Shine is an annual tradition that sees hundreds gather to view an assortment of classic and modern vehicles, including cars, trucks, tractors, bikes, boats, and more. Anyone is welcome to enter any vehicle they’re proud of – free of charge.
“It’s free entry for everyone – that’s participants, vendors, spectators – everybody gets to come in for free,” said Gerry Kielman, president of the Nicola
Previous iterations of the Show ‘n’ Shine have drawn in entries and spectators from across the province, including the participation of neighbouring communities’ classic car clubs. Kielman told the Herald the event is not only a venue for the viewing of impressive automobiles, it’s a vehicle for lifelong connection and friendship.
The love of the vehicles is what unites the attendees and entrants alike.
“It’s the appreciation of all the old cars, and the chance to get up and see them up close. It puts a lot of cars in one spot so you’re able to see pretty much everything that we miss,” said Kielman.
The Cruisers Club also hosts a weekly meeting at A&W on Voght Street, where members gather with their classic cars for a burger and some camaraderie. Last week, members took a garage tour after their meal.

Supersized plants! - giant hogweed versus cow parsnip
You’ve likely found yourself scratching your head, looking at an enormous plant wondering, “is this the giant hogweed I’ve heard so much about?”
Today’s article is focused on two plants that are often confused for one another: cow parsnip (native) and giant hogweed (exotic/invasive).
Both species have a large umbrella shaped ‘bouquet’ of small, white flowers. Both plants are large; however, giant hogweed is ‘supersized,’ growing up to four metres tall; while cow parsnip taps out at a mere two metres. The key defining difference between the two plant species is in their leaf shape. Giant hogweed has enormous leaves (up to 1.5 metres across) that are deeply incised with pointy tips, while cow parsnip leaves are half the size and have more rounded leaf tips. The stem of giant hogweed also has purple spots on it, while cow parsnip stems may have purple coloring, but not defined blotches.
When examining these super-sized suspects, I caution you to do so from a distance or with proper personal protective equipment. Giant hogweed is a hazardous, federally listed noxious weed. Its sap contains phototoxic chemicals.
Community Policing Of ce offers outdoor activities
If the sap encounters your skin and then is exposed to sunlight, it can cause severe skin irritation including painful, burning blisters and long-lasting scars. If the plant touches your skin, immediately wash the area with soap and water and protect from sunlight for 48 hours. Native cow parsnip is far less toxic, but it can still cause a rash or burn. Use caution around either plant.
Both species inhabit moist meadows, forest edges, and riparian zones. Fortunately, giant hogweed is not yet known to occur in the Thompson Nicola Regional District. While it is possible for it to establish in the region, the supersized plant you are likely to is our native cow parsnip.
Help keep our region free of invasive plants by being “Plant-Wise” and choosing non-invasive species for your property. If you suspect giant hogweed in our region, report it to the TNRD.
Catherine is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Thompson Nicola Invasive Plant Management Committee (on Facebook @ TNIPMC). This season, articles are dedicated to identifying native plants that are commonly mistaken for invasive plants. The series will provide tools and tips for telling the difference between invasive species and native look-alikes in our region. Look for more resources at www. tnrd.ca.

From Boy Scouts to the Canadian Airforce: Merritt Airman Jim Hardy
Cameron Bridge
Seeing as today was airport day, we thought we’d take a look at a Merritt Airman, Jim Hardy. James Thomas “Jim” Hardy was born in Merritt in 1922, the child of Ellen and Archie Hardy. The Hardy’s appear to have come to Merritt in 1929 when Archie was awarded the position of district repairman for Merritt and the surrounding area for the B.C. Telephone Company.
Growing up, Jim Hardy was a member of the local boy scouts, was an actor in the MSS’s version of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, was the captain of his midget hockey team and led his team to a championship, and was also a proficient baseball player. He also had a keen interest in aviation, even from a young age.
In 1941, on his 19th birthday, Jim Hardy signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Vancouver and on August 28th, 1942 he had earned his wings, becoming what the Merritt Herald said was the “First native born son of the Nicola Valley to earn his wings”. He would spend time in Manitoba as a R.C.A.F. instructor before shipping off to Europe in October, 1943. In October 1944, he would be promoted to Flight Lieutenant as he was stationed flying Halifax Bombers over Germany with the 427
Lion Squadron.
On the night of November 23 and 24, he was piloting a Halifax bomber alongside 12 others. Their mission was to mine the sea, dropping 1500 lb mines over the Kattegat sea between Denmark and Sweden. It appears that on the return to Scotland something went wrong and his plane crashed just offshore from Kingston, Scotland. All seven crew men were lost, and Jim Hardy was buried at the Bellie Churchyard in Morayshire, Scotland.
In order to preserve his memory, for a number of years after the War the Jim Hardy Memorial Trophy was awarded to the valley’s champion fastball team.

A life of love and logging: Tony Caruso pens letter to community
communities with roots in the logging industry. Five years ago, he was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Tony succumbed to this disease on July 12, 2023, and wished for the family to publish the following letter, in his words, for him:
“I want to thank my family and the communities of Merritt and Princeton for all of the support you have given to me and my family.
To my grandchildren, Kayla Van Roosbroeck (Matt McCrae), MariJae Pelly (Jayden McGowan), AJ Pelly (predeceased), Kelsea Brown, Taylor Brown, Amika Caruso, Riley Rempel, Cali Schwarz, Lyla Schwarz, and Molly Schwarz, and my great grandchildren Jack, Daisy, Claire, Cruz, and Teddy, I want to tell you that life is short, no matter how old you are, so go and have fun.
To my siblings Jim Caruso (Elaine), and Debbie Giles (Keith), I love you and thank you for everything you have done to support me and my wife through this journey. We could not have done it without you. Thank you to my friends Norm Houlind, Wayne Schindler, Bill Pierce, Jack Williams, Steve Nyeste, and Grace and Arlie for being here all the time to visit me.
family in Princeton, thank you for everything, you always made me feel like I was part of the family and I appreciate everything you did for me.
Mostly, I want to thank my girls Lisa Caruso (deceased) Tammy (Dan) Brown, Jamie (Heath) Shafer, and Mindy Caruso for always being here to help me and your mom. And my wife, Donna Caruso. I love you and I always will. The best thing I ever did with my life was to marry you.
There has been so much support, I have done lots, had several jobs, had fun when I was younger, and used to think I was the toughest guy in town. I used to have a fleet of logging trucks, now I have a fleet of wheelchairs. I want a prescription for a new body. I would not wish this disease on anyone. Despite how terrible the disease has been and how it has impacted my body and my loved ones, I have had a good life and I am thankful to you all for being a part of it.”
-Tony Caruso
Tony Caruso, a local logger, passed away last week after a years-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Caruso split his lifetime living between Merritt and nearby Princeton for most of his life. He was a beloved member among the Merrittonians.
Shortly after being diagnosed with ALS, an incurable neurodegenerative disease, back in 2018, Caruso was immediately supported by his family, friends and the community of Merritt.
His family started organizing fundraiser events around town and support like the Move to Cure campaign by the ALS Society of British Columbia, which supports families affected by ALS and funds ongoing research for a cure.
In 2022, the event hosted by Caruso’s family raised more than $21,000, well exceeding their $10,000 goal. This year’s event also exceeded its $10,000 goal.
Despite facing extreme adversity
from the disease, Caruso remained as a source of positivity and kindness to those around him.
In July 2022, Tammy Brown, one of Caruso’s daughters, told the Herald her father has been a beacon of hope and positivity for her during some difficult times for the family.
“Our family has been through the ringer. All of these things have brought us closer together, but my dad’s positivity and strength through all of this has given all of us hope,” she said at the time.
In June 2023, Brown said to the Herald the annual event has helped to show her father that he has the support of both of the communities he calls home.
“I think for the families, and even for my dad, it’s shown him how much support he has and how much people love him,” Brown told the Herald at the time.
The following is a letter and statement by the Caruso family, and a posthumous letter from Caruso hismelf:
Tony Caruso was a long time member of both the Merritt and Princeton
To my neighbors Anoop, Harpreet, Gurpreet and family for always being supportive and for lifting and carrying me when my family could no longer do it consistently. This helped to keep me at home for longer instead of in the hospital, which me and my family are so grateful for. So many people have supported us including our son-in-law Nathan Schwarz and my in laws Sharon Meckler (Jim Reimer), Bev and Jan Loos, Barry and Barb Meckler and Liana and Randy Grill. I want to thank GF Strong, the ALS Society of BC, the ALS Kamloops support group, community nursing, Dr. Goetz, Dr. Ross, and the Gillis House staff, namely Corey, Muriel, and Mary, who provided me with support where it was needed.
I also want to extend thanks to Grant Klassen from Nicola Motor Sports, Pat McCormack from Merritt Machine works, and James McNanny, and Rob Boley from Nomad for supporting me with equipment when my mobility ceased. Thank you Greg Johnson for the last minute decal on the greatest parade of my life. I want to thank Sandy Labermeyer for taking care of my feet when they caused me pain. To the Brewer
The Caruso family also wishes to thank everyone who has donated to the ALS Society and helped to raise awareness about ALS on Tony’s behalf, including Q101 and The Merritt Herald for always supporting this cause. While Tony lived with ALS, over $45,000 has been raised to help find a cure so other families don’t have to face the same heartache and loss.
Local logger Tony Caruso died last week after a courageous and inspirational battle with ALS, raising tens of thousands of dollars during the time he lived with the disease. Contributed.

‘Hello, Merritt,’ Q&A with new Merritt Centennials Head Coach
first few weeks as the new Head Coach and Assistant General Manager of the Merritt Centennials.
A: It’s been a really busy time as far as getting everything wrapped up with what players want to come back, what players we want to have back, and just looking at what we need. We need a lot of everything. There’s some big changes with the league this year, so the recruiting has never been on a broader scale. We’ve been busy recruiting, even travelling to Boston, where we did a camp, so it was good to bring some players back from that. On the other side, lots of communications going on with agents and families, lots of phone calls and Zoom calls trying to recruit the best players possible. Not only high in talent, but good character kids that want to come and play in Merritt.
Q: Is there anything about the current roster, including new and returning players, that excites you?
this. We’re holding our ground, we’re building our roster with players that want to come and play. The players that want to move on, they’re not a priority right now for us.
Q: After a few seasons in Cowichan Valley with the Capitals, what did you take away from your time there?
A new British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) season, the first of its kind under new independent rules, is quickly approaching, and the Merritt Herald sat down with new Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Brian Passmore to discuss his vision for the team and his experience.
Passmore was hired at the end of May, after the Cents’ board chose not to renew the contracts of his predecessor, Curtis Toneff, and former assistant head coach Sam Waterfield. Waterfield is now replaced by Connor Logan. Passmore, Logan, returning assistant coach Paul Barnes, and returning goalie coach Tyler Steel will coach an almost entirely new team in the 2023/24 season.
Q: What made you chose Merritt? Was there anything in
particular about the opportunity in the Nicola Valley that made it easier?
A: Obviously I’ve seen what’s gone on the last few years, so there was a lot of questions at the start, and I think the more I was talking to the GM, Kevin Rabbitt, and the (former) President Kelly Bartch, it made sense, and they want what I wanted, which is stability. I love hockey and I feel I can do a good job in this league. With Cowichan, I learned a lot, so I know the league, and I know what it’s like to go through the hard times and want to get through it. Where they wanted that stability, that’s what attracted me. Coaching in the BCHL is a privilege, and Merritt is a little bit further from my home in Victoria, but it’s a great opportunity. I’ve been to Merritt a few times and the people are great, it’s a great community, and they deserve a good team, and that’s what I’m trying to do.
Q: Tell us a bit about your
A: Yes there is. We’re not a team full of NCAA commits as of right now, but we’re filling it up with talented players that want those commitments. A player that really excites me right now is a player named Easton Ryan. He’s a 20-year-old, played with the Boston Junior Bruins in the NCDC last year, was a captain, and led his team in scoring. Thus far, we’re happy with what we’ve gotten recruiting wise, I think our depth is really what we’re looking at, we added some players we felt would bring us good depth. A player we really think will have a great Junior career is Trent LeDrew, right defenseman, 2005-born. He’ll be in town with us for a couple of years, and I think he’ll be a player that the fans enjoy watching. He plays the game hard and I think he’ll be a player that a lot of schools will be all over. Our goaltending tandem, two 19-yearolds, one is an import out of Boston and one is out of Pickering, Ont. They’re really solid goalies, they’re proving themselves by fighting to be number one goalies.
I’ll be honest, not a lot of players in B.C. want to come to Merritt right now. I’m trying to change that, but it’s not going to be easy, and I’m not hiding that fact because some of our players that were key players on the team last year have asked for trades, and they don’t want to be a part of
A: I learned a lot. It’s who you’re dealing with in the league – you’re dealing with agents and you’re dealing with the league as far as organizing and planning – how teams are built, when you’re overcommitting, you just learn a lot of those little things. Where we are in the summer right now is a time when you’re really supposed to be planning for the season, for training camp, getting all the information out to the players. I just felt like, when I was in Cowichan, it was kind of similar to this, constantly making vast changes and lots of roster moves. We don’t want to do that, we want to bring in the right kids that want to stay with us for a couple of years and build, and not have to constantly be trading players and bringing players in and out.
Q: The Interior Division is a really tough division, is there anything from your coaching experience in other divisions that you think will help lead you to success here?
A: I think so, it’s a very tough division, and one thing we’re going to want to do is play a little bit more aggressively. We sat back a little bit too much last season, I want to be a forward checking team, I like a team that’s faster, a little bit older, and bigger. I think if you looked at last year’s stats with the league, we were the youngest team and the smallest team. We obviously want to get more skilled in many areas. I just really feel that if we have a great nucleus of kids that have leadership qualities, that will more-or-less mean having a strong team as far as being proud to be a part of the community, and that goes a long way. Lots of things to check off, but little by little, we’re building it slowly. It’s a bit of a puzzle right now, but it’s coming together quite nicely.
The Cents will begin the 2023/24 British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) season with a home game against the Powell River Kings on September 22. For more information, visit www.merrittcentennials.com.

Merritt Speedway hosts annual Family Day after weather delays
On Saturday (July 15), the day was back on, with the usual racing, foot and bike races, and plenty of candy.
“Last month unfortunately our Family Day was cut short due to the rain,” said Christopher Jones, volunteer media coordinator with the Merritt Speedway. “Some of the activities were completed and others were not, so, on Saturday we combined the remaining Family Day with the Toy Drive. A great time was had by all, and we raised $150 in cash and a bunch of cool toys.”
Marius Auer NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM
It was a family affair at the Merritt Speedway this past weekend, with dozens of local families gathering at the
track to take in the sights and sounds of another race day, along with some family specific offerings.
Family Day at the Merritt Speedway was originally planned for June, but weather unfortunately got in the way.
Along with the four current classes of late model, street stock, four cylinder bomber, and junior four cylinder bombers, a new ‘Quarter Sprint’ class has recently been added to the fun. The new class, which consists of ‘mini sprint’ and ‘quarter midget’ cars for racers five to 13 years of age, had their time on the track as well as a part of Family Day.
With the racing came fundraising as well, including more than $150 and a number of toys raised for local
charities by way of a Duck Toss and Toy Drive event. There were plenty of prizes and trophies to be won, including some for new personal bests set on the track.
“The kids bicycle race was entertaining, as was the well supported Duck Toss,” noted Jones. “The racing was fast paced with some personal bests. Shout out to Cody Dennis for his sweep of the Late Model races.”
The full results of this weekend, and future races, can be found on the Speedhive app. For more information on the Merritt Speedway, visit www. facebook.com/merrittspeedway.ca.
Centennials announce Connor Logan hired as assistant coach
Marius Auer NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM
Building both their roster and coaching staff in anticipation of a landmark season for the team and the league as a whole, the Merritt Centennials have signed Connor Logan as their new assistant coach.
The team said in a release that Logan will form part of a new ‘dynamic’ coaching staff for the upcoming season, made up of Head Coach Brian Passmore, Assistant Coach Paul Barnes, and Goalie Coach Tyler Steel, along with new arrival Logan. The new assistant coach said he looks to bring both his playing and coaching experience to the role in Merritt.
“My goal is to take my knowledge and experience and use it to help this team progress and win. Also, to help players move onto the NCAA ranks,” said Logan in a team release. “This is an exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started.”
During a playing career which spanned from 2012 to 2020, Logan gained five years of junior playing experience in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Prince George Spruce Kings, and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Battleford North Stars. Logan, a forward at the time, aided the 2016/17 North Stars to their SJHL champion-
ship. His playing career ended in 2020 while playing for the University of Windsor.
After his playing career ended, the Cents said Logan transitioned his focus to player development, honing his skills as a dedicated instructor of skill development and strength and conditioning. He established his own private training business, ‘Con’s Elite Performance,’ where he provided guidance to athletes seeking to enhance their abilities in a number of disciplines. During the most recent BCHL season, Logan was on the Cowichan Valley Capitals staff as a strength and conditioning coach.

Doctor cycling through Merritt on cross-country fundraiser
Dr. Alex DiGiacomo, a Lower Maniland based clinical psyschologist, will soon embark on her journey across Canada to raise awareness and funds for children’s mental health issues. DiGiacomo will ride coast to coast starting on July 22, with her first stop coming in Merritt on July 23. DiGiacomo said that an estimated 1.2 million children and youth, or 1 in 6, are affected by mental health struggles. Photo/ BreaktheCycle
REPORTER@MERRITTHERALD.COM
When Dr. Alex DiGiacomo begins her epic cycling journey across Canada on July 22, it won’t just be to raise money for youth mental health awareness.
The clinical psychologist wants to show Canadians that progress can be made, even if it’s small.
“With some commitment, support, and the right tools, you can be miles from where you started,” she said.
According to a press release, DiGiacomo has seen throughout her career a lot of families and kids struggling to get the help they need.
“I regularly assess kids who have been on a waitlist for months and often their treatment at this point becomes more complicated and resource-intensive,” she said. “Not to mention that delayed intervention is also very stressful for parents, and over time it may lower their capability to cope.”
According to British Columbia’s government website, an estimate of 12.70 per cent of children aged four to 18, or nearly 95,000 children in the province, will experience mental disorders causing significant symptoms and impairment at any given time.
DiGiacomo hopes that her campaign
#BreakTheCycle raises awareness and stimulates conversation country wide on the matter.
Along with the awareness, she said in the release that she also hopes to generate funds for carefully chosen charities that are providing direct mental health care or resourcing youth and families in innovative and useful ways.
She also said that she is aware of the mental and physical challenges she might face during this adventure.
“I am a firm believer that we don’t have to have all the answers before we decide to take a step … even if that step is filled with uncertainty,” DiGiacomo said.
DiGiacomo will start her 6,000 kilometre cycling journey from Kitsilano Beach, in Vancouver on July 22 and will cycle her way to Merritt on July 23, where she will also stay for the night.

Donald Evans Smith
November 23, 1932- June 22, 2023
We are sad to announce the death of Donald Evans Smith on June 22, 2023.
He will be fondly remembered by many as a Hardworking, Kind, Honest, Gentle man
In Personality, he was a Pensive Man yet always willing to take the time to listen with interest, quick to share your joys coupled with his Generous personal compliments
His life choices and conversation clearly indicated that his relationship with his Creator was dear to his heart Don kept his promise to his creator to remain faithful as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses until his last breath, confident that he will be awakened to regain his strength and vigor
The History of the 90 years of his life could write its own novel, but in short he was born November 23, 1932 in Fillmore, Saskatchewan into a large family of 11 who predeceased him as well as his parents William and Beatrice Smith
SOCIETY
In 1952 He married Adrienne and together they had their daughter Pamela –they were married for 30 years until Adrienne’s demise
In 1987 He married Sharon and shared the remainder of his days with her for 36 years, he was well loved and respected by his new family
Don was a man of many trades and worked within Vancouver district on Tugboats, with the Forestry along the Sunshine Coast,in construction as a Drywaller as well as Coquitlam and New Westminster School Boards Don always enjoyed taking pride and interest in whatever work he put his hands to. After retirement , Sharon and Don took on the task of building two of their houses together in Logan Lake and Merritt BC, enjoying good friendships with many and serving as active ministers of Jehovah’s Witnesses within those communities

Those who knew Don know he did not like to be fussed over or be the center of attention therefore as per his wishes ,there will be no memorial service
But if Don was able to have the last word to us, in his dry witty humor along with his mischievous smile and a twinkle in his eye, it would be:
“ See you in the Funny Papers!”
In remembrance of Don please enjoy his favorite scripture in Psalm 37:29
“The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it “
