MERRITT HERALD THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2018 • MERRITT NEWSPAPERS

B.C.’s natural gas supply may be limited this winter

Reduce your use Due to the rupture of the Enbridge-owned natural gas transmission pipeline earlier this fall, B.C.’s natural gas supply will be restricted this winter. Even though the line is now repaired, it’s operating at a lower capacity and will be transporting a reduced amount of natural gas to FortisBC this winter. We’re doing everything we can to ensure all our customers receive the natural gas they need. You can help by reducing your use. Every bit you save helps ensure we have the natural gas to keep homes warm and businesses working. fortisbc.com/reduceyouruse

Why we need to conserve natural gas this winter

If the Enbridge-owned natural gas transmission pipeline is repaired why isn’t it business as usual?

Enbridge expects their pipeline system to transport up to 85 per cent of its full capacity following approval from the National Energy Board (NEB). Engineering assessments will continue on Enbridge’s system until they receive approval from the NEB to return to 100 per cent capacity. During this period, our supply will be limited when demand is at the highest, such as an extended cold snap.

Here’s how you can help Conservation will ensure we can provide the natural gas our customers need this winter. And with more than one million customers, a little conservation can go a long way. Here’s how you can help: Turn down the heat at home: if just 11 homes set their thermostat 3 °C lower for when they need heat, it could save enough natural gas to provide heat and hot water for one home for a year.1

Savings are approximate, assuming a thermostat setback of an additional three degrees Celsius for when heat is needed in a natural gas heated 2,300 - 2,600 square foot home located in a FortisBC service area. On average, a home this size consumes 90 gigajoules of natural gas annually.

1

Assumes an additional setback of three degrees Celsius for 10 hours each weekday, saving 90 gigajoules of natural gas over the heating season, enough to heat one average sized home for a year.

2

FortisBC Energy Inc. uses the FortisBC name and logo under license from Fortis Inc. (18-311.34 11/2018)

Turn down the heat at work: if a 23,000 square foot office set its thermostat 3 °C lower during office hours, it could save enough natural gas to provide heat and hot water for one home for a year.2 Take shorter showers: save hot water by shortening your showers by two minutes.

Put on a sweater: if you’re cold, reach for a sweater, socks or blanket instead of turning up the heat. fortisbc.com/reduceyouruse Connect with us

City petitioned to improve removal

WINTERTIME WOES

this week merrittherald.com

Project funding Shawn Boven, the city’s chief administrative officer, told the Herald he is confident the city will be able to better manage snow removal this winter. In addition to the purchase of a $15,000 multi-direction front plow (pictured above) that promises to better plow tough spots like cul de sacs and parking lots, Boven said the city has also added a salt and sand storage facility at the public works yard, and purchased a brine mixer and upgraded brine equipment. Dara Hill/Herald

Senior said her quality of life worsened after taking a fall on the ice last winter. Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

After a local senior spoke up about falling on the ice last winter, Merrittonians are urging the city to do a better job clearing the white stuff. Over 400 locals signed a petition calling for better snow and ice removal that was presented to council at a regular meeting on Nov. 13. The drive for signatures was led by Nell Veale, who said pedestrian safety is her top concern. She told the Herald she is seeking better management on streets with no sidewalks such as in cul de sacs, as well as the pickup and drop-off locations utilized by the Health Connections medical bus. She added she would like to see better communica-

tion from the city about the plow schedule as well. “We are asking [the city] to reassess the priorities, the methods, the procedures, manpower and machinery when removing snow and ice,” she said. Craig Gray, a Merritt resident, was at the council meeting and said he is concerned about the lack of winter road maintenance. “I have lived in numerous cities in British Columbia, yet I had never seen such a blatant lack of snow removal as I did in Merritt last year,” he said. Possible solutions, according to Gray, include purchasing blades for the city’s trucks, learning snow removal techniques such as plowing down the edge of the road to leave a berm in the centre that

can be removed during the night and contracting out if heavy snow conditions exist. “Numerous cities with less resources than Merritt seem to be capable of doing this every year,” he said. A Merritt senior was also at the meeting, and shared her story of a fall on the ice last winter. Norma Boone said she was walking into her cul de sac to approach her own cleared driveway when she had to cross over some thick ice on the road. “It was a bone crushing fall. Unable to move or help myself in any way, I began to scream for help,” Boone told council, noting she was taken away in an ambulance and stayed at the hospital for three months due to a broken pelvis. “Now I am nine and a half months out and have been told by my neuro-

s t e u q n a B s a m t s i Chr

surgeon that they cannot intervene to relieve my pain. In that moment of impact, nerves that supply feeling and function to my legs were permanently damaged,” she said. “I will never be the same.” Boone said daily living is now painful and puts her at risk of falling which she did recently, resulting in a broken sternum. “If only that ice would not have been there I would still have my independence,” she said. “My life has been forever changed by the ice on which I fell.” Veale told council Boone’s story is what inspired her to start the petition. “Dangerous conditions lead to broken bones and lasting hardships for all ages, especially seniors and the disadvantaged,” the petition reads. “Will you consider taking another look at the size of the crew, the equipment

and the budget?” Coun. Kurt Christopherson expressed his sympathy following the presentation. “I think you are quite right and I am sure we intend to look at how to prioritize, how to spend the tax dollars wisely,” he said. “Whatever fix there is it is not an easy one but I think you have our assurances that we will do our best.” Following her presentation to council, Veale told the Herald she is feeling optimistic. “I felt a great response from a couple of the councillors — they said some very positive things. I think that they’ll do the best they can with what they have to work with,” she said. “Now they know the trouble areas, the cul de sacs — everywhere there is no sidewalk for people to walk on. I think they took notice and listened well.”

School trustees are weighing their options after receiving an influx of $400,000 from the sale of the former Nicola Lake School, which has been closed since the 1980s.

Band receives housing windfall Province pledges $231 million to construct homes for First Nations communities. Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Upper Nicola Indian Band (UNB) members will soon have access to new, affordable housing on the local reserve as the band is set to receive $4.8 million from the province for the construction of 24 new homes. The B.C. government announced an

investment of $231 million worth of new affordable housing into indigenous communities province-wide in a news release on Nov. 24. The 1,143 homes include nearly 780 off-reserve homes and close to 370 homes onreserve. There are six other projects announced for the Interior, with 148 homes set to be built

in Cranbrook, Kanaka Bar, Kelowna, Westbank and Windermere. BC Housing will work with indigenous non-profit housing providers and First Nations to finalize the projects over the next few months, and the houses are scheduled for construction over the next two to four years. “The housing situation facing indigenous peoples in British Columbia is unacceptable,” said Selina Robinson, minister of municipal affairs and housing in the news

release. Collette Sunday, band manager for Upper Nicola, said the development will address the housing shortage on the reserve. The development will allow the band to “welcome some of our members back into the

community — that is the goal,” she said. The investment is part of a 10-year, $550-million commitment to build 1,750 new units of social housing for indigenous peoples. A second call for applications is anticipated for spring 2020.

Log prices causing local mill to shutdown Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS

A wave of B.C. sawmill shutdowns and layoffs is a combination of reduced log supply, high log prices and a steep drop in lumber prices, forest industry executives say. In Merritt, the Aspen Planers mill will be shut down from Nov. 26 to Dec. 3, and then again from Dec. 22 to Jan. 7. About 100 workers will be affected by the shutdown, said Bruce Rose, executive vice president at Aspen Planers. The shutdown

is a temporary measure due to the price of logs and availability of timber, he added. “We’ll do some maintenance and projects that take a little prolonged downtime,” said Rose. Lumber prices hit a record of $650 per 1,000 board feet early this year as U.S. housing demand ramped up and B.C. producers piled up lumber due to a shortage of rail cars, partly caused by increased oilby-rail shipments.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Plecas shows his colours It almost seems there’s something about putting on the three-cornered hat of Speaker TOM FLETCHER of the B.C. B.C. Legislature VIEWS that causes overheating of the brain underneath. B.C. Liberal MLA Linda Reid embarked on a spending spree that included renovations and security upgrades to her Richmond constituency office as well as extravagant remodelling of the legislature she found herself ruling over with nearabsolute authority. Before Reid, Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff kept a tight leash on the press gallery and a veil over legislature finances, ruling with an imperial disdain not usually seen in trucking company owners. At least I’d buy a used truck from Barisoff, which is more than I can say for the current occupant of the ornate old speaker’s office, Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas. We now know that Plecas hired his buddy and campaign worker as a political adviser, a job never before seen in the speaker’s office, and that buddy spent months conducting some sort of amateur gumshoe investigation that burst into the media with the unnecessary public humiliation of two long-serving senior administrators. Then Plecas tried to get his buddy into the suddenly vacant job of sergeant-at-arms, apparently oblivious to the fact that a long-time deputy with military experience was ready to step into the sensitive job of legislature security chief. Last year Plecas played a key role in toppling the B.C. Liberals, by seizing the speaker’s job after repeatedly stating he would never do such an unethical, self-serving thing to the voters who elected him.

guerilla war of resistance. They have nothing to gain. They actually have a lot to lose, because a full-scale invasion of Ukraine would trigger a Western reaction that would come close to bankrupting Russia. NATO would conclude that this was the first step in President Vladimir Putin’s plan to reconquer all of the former Soviet empire in Eastern Europe, and start rearming in a very big way. The Russians would go broke if they tried to keep up. The actual clash on Sunday saw three Ukrainians injured, 29 others arrested, and three Ukrainian navy ships boarded and seized. The ships were trying to pass through a Russian-controlled strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, a relatively shallow body of water (maximum depth 14 metres) that is about the size of Switzerland. Until the Russians took Crimea from Ukraine four years ago, the strait had Russian territory on one side and Ukrainian territory on the other. A treaty signed in 2003 said that both countries had free access to the Sea of Azov and their respective ports along its coasts, no permission needed. In 2014, however, Russia infiltrated troops into Crimea who pretended to be a new local militia. They took control of the entire penin-

sula and its two million people, staged a referendum on whether it should become part of Russia, and won it. Since there was no land connection between Russia and the Crimean peninsula, Putin decided to build an 18-kilometre bridge joining the two sides of the Strait of Kerch. By a happy coincidence, that would also give him the ability to control or even block shipping trying to get to Ukrainian ports on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov. The bridge is now open, and Putin is exercising that option. The Ukrainians tried to send their (rather small) warships through to show that the treaty of free passage signed in 2003 still applies. The Russians didn’t actually deny that, but said that they were closing the strait temporarily for operational reasons. The Ukrainian warships pushed on, and the Russians attacked them. The Russians are legally in the wrong, but they are going to win this one because Ukraine had almost no navy left and nobody wants a bigger war.

OPINION LETTERS

to the editor

Staff at Nicola Valley hospital deserve kudos Editor, I would like to say thank you to the paramedics and fire fighters who responded to the 911 call at our house on Nov. 22. Your expertise, patience and kindness were very much appreciated. I never thought I’d be in such a state that I would require an ambulance. I only wish I had been more able to help you, but then, I wouldn’t have required your assistance! A thank you seems so little compared to what you all did to help me get to the hospital. I would also like to say thank you to the nurses, technicians and Dr. Nottebrock at Nicola Valley hospital emergency. You all did your jobs so efficiently and were so kind in the process. I left the hospital in a far better shape than I entered thanks to you. My thank yous are not complete until I say thank you to Tracie Ellis and Molly Brigden who both were concerned enough to text Peter and let him know that if there was anything they could do for us, to please ask. My heart truly overflows with gratitude for everyone who helped us through what was, for me, a scary and difficult time. Rachelle Vogt Merritt

Editor, Recently, Michelle Hawkins of Logan Lake’s Better at Home (BAH) program and Kristina Froment, head co-ordinator of the Logan Lake Food Bank, established an exciting partnership to assist both BAH clients and seniors in the community needing assistance in accessing food products and services. At the same time, the two agencies are working to build social connections for residents who, because of isolation due to mental or physical health issues, find it difficult (if not impossible) to get out into the community to build friendships and support networks. To help with the “building” process, Michelle’s team got in touch with her clients to invite everyone to a meet and greet over coffee/tea and cookies at a small but friendly gathering hosted by the Logan Lake Food Bank.

From Page 6 He plotted with the NDP for weeks, as they jockeyed for the key extra vote a defection from the B.C. Liberals would give them. It’s safe to say the B.C. Liberals don’t like Plecas. He betrayed them for his own personal benefit, after riding their reliable party brand to get re-elected in Abbotsford. New Democrats despise their former colleague Gordon Wilson for similar reasons, although Plecas’ actions were much more sudden and damaging than Wilson’s wandering from party to party over the years.

‘‘

‘NDP house leader Mike Farnworth grimly vowed he has confidence in Plecas as speaker.’

Glad to hear you’re feeling better Rachelle! - Editor

Logan Lake comes together for seniors

Speaker’s self-serving move is incredible

Some of the issues which were raised included the need to reach out to the community in order to make seniors more aware of how the Logan Lake Food Bank and its volunteers can help those in need. Many in the community probably aren’t aware that because of this newly established connection between BAH and the food bank, groceries from the food bank can be delivered to BAH clients without transportation by the food bank’s sterling volunteers. In turn, this shows the incredible need of the BAH program to have more volunteer drivers register (by calling 250-320-3676) to take residents into Kamloops or Merritt primarily for medical appointments. Because drivers are volunteers, they can decide on a schedule they might be available for and, with more drivers available, this results in less of a burden on individual volunteers. With Logan Lake Food Bank taking on the role of offering its own form of assistance and outreach services along with those of BAH, the future ahead for seniors with physical, mental or financial issues will be well and tenderly cared for! Barrie Ogden Logan Lake

I had the chance to see firsthand how the Better at Home program utilizes successful partnerships with other community groups in Logan Lake to foster better health outcomes for seniors. Check out the “Paper Pals” program at MerrittHerald.com for more! - Editor

NDP house leader Mike Farnworth grimly vowed he has confidence in Plecas as speaker. The NDP need Plecas to retain their tenuous hold on power. That need will become critical if the Nanaimo by-election early in the new year goes against the governing party, as they sometimes do in even the “safest” of seats. Here are some things you should know about Alan Mullen, Plecas’s left-hand man. Upon arrival from Ireland in 1994, he went to work on NDP campaigns. Strictly non-partisan, of course, as he describes his current job. He just liked the NDP platform. Then he got a manager job at Kent federal prison in Agassiz, where he met Plecas, who as the Abbotsford News reported last spring, “moonlighted as a prison judge while teaching at the University of the Fraser Valley.” As Mullen told it, he and Plecas were involved in “thousands” of adjudications, inmate discipline hearings where Mullen styled himself as prosecutor. Gee, “thousands” seems like a lot, given that Kent has a rated capacity of 378 inmates. Mullen has no legal or police credentials. Not one but two actual independent prosecutors have been hired to oversee what we are told is now an RCMP investigation into unknown allegations, which could take months or years. It may be a long time before we know if there is anything to the suspicions of a professor-turned-politician and his sidekick. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING INVESTMENT PROPERTY • Location – The more central the location to transportation, hospitals, schools, restaurants and shopping, the higher the demand. • Employment opportunities – a growing job market means more rentals are needed. • Rental rates – make sure your rental rates cover your mortgage payments, taxes, insurance, extra expenses and Property Management fees. • Development – Is there future development planned for the area that will help increase your property value? The easiest investment properties are apartments, townhouses and single family homes. Apartments and townhomes are lower maintenance, but do your research on comparative properties and watch out for high monthly strata fees.

NVIT looks to establish new northern campus

Driver collides with local hotel RCMP issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention to the driver of a black Honda Civic who crashed into the Coldwater Hotel on Nov. 24. Staff Sgt. Lorne Wood confirmed the incident took place at 1:40 p.m. on Saturday. Aside from a bloody lip suffered by the man who was driving, no injuries resulted from the crash. The 70-year-old Merritt man “went by pretty quick but they managed to hit the breaks as they came into contact with [the hotel],” Wood said,

Aside from a bloody lip suffered by the driver, no injuries resulted from the collision. Photo contributed

adding there was no major damage to the building. Wood said the accident was due to a com-

bination of a loose shoe falling under the pedals of the vehicle as well as the driver possibly suffering from a medical

issue. It was confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not a factor. In addition to issuing

a ticket, RCMP have requested a review of the driver’s license with the superintendent of motor vehicles.

Police find meth in second bust of month Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD

Merritt RCMP arrested a pair of locals after finding drugs and weapons in their motel room. The search took place on Nov. 22 at 5:00 p.m., Const. Derrick Francis told the Herald. Merritt RCMP had information that a man and a woman were trafficking drugs out of their room at the All Seasons Motel on Nicola Avenue. “We used some of our normal investigative techniques and got the information required to get a [search] warrant issued to us,” said Francis. “There were two people in the residence at the time. They were both arrested and the room was searched.” Francis said RCMP have not completed their drug analysis, but confirmed they seized crystal meth, heroin and crack cocaine from the room, as well as drug paraphernalia, packaging and weighing mate-

rials, cash and several weapons. The weapons were hidden within the room, Francis said, and included a pellet gun, a stun gun, crossbow and flintlock rifle. “The weapons for us were troubling as [one of the suspects] was prohibited from having weapons from other charges,” he said. While the tally of

The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology is one step closer to establishing a campus in northern B.C., after the Haisla Nation council invited the post-secondary institution to set up shop in Kitimat. A number of factors make Kitimat an enticing spot to establish that campus, said Ken Tourand, president of NVIT. With a $40 billion LNG project slated to be constructed in the community, a Kitimatbased NVIT campus would be able to meet the demand for training in the region, said Tourand. Plus, NVIT already runs two full-time programs through the Kitimat Valley Institution, a private training institute established by the Haisla Nation. But while the Haisla Nation council and NVIT are in favour of the partnership, the project won’t move forward without the approval and the financial support of the Ministry of Advanced Education, explained Tourand. “This isn’t 100 per cent by any means,” he said.

drugs seized pales in comparison to their bust earlier this month, Francis said the catch is still significant. The pair of suspects

faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited device, and a number of breach of probation charges.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

Economic outlook affects multiple mills From Page 5 That lumber inventory glut got moving as other producers switched from Asia to the U.S. for the high prices, and then the price fell below $300, said Susan Yurkovich, CEO of the B.C. umbrella group Council of Forest Industries. “We’re looking for some price improvement, Yurkovich told Black Press in an interview this week. “We’ve seen it improve a little bit over the last number of weeks, but that doesn’t change the fundamental issue around availability of fibre, in the Interior in particular, and the high fibre costs across the province. The log shortage is the tail end of a 15-year decline due to the mountain pine beetle epidemic in the B.C. Interior. Forests Minister Doug Donaldson said in an interview the job losses are partly a result of abnormally high salvage logging, and now the reduced allowable cut on Crown forest land is showing its effects. Forest fires interrupted logging, but 2.4 million cubic metres of fire salvage timber were approved this summer for sawmills, Donaldson said. “We’re working with the community transition action team to identify skills training that could occur, Donaldson said. “We want to try to keep people in their communities if they desire, and find jobs that are there. The province has increased land recovery spending by $22 million over three years, and that means “boots on the ground for reforestation, he added. Quesnel has been particularly affected, after Tolko Industries announced a shutdown of its sawmill there in October, affecting 100 direct jobs and associ-

ated logging. Tolko had previously shut down its Merritt sawmill, as B.C. companies adjusted to reduced allowable timber cut. Then West Fraser Timber announced last week it is ending its third shift at its Quesnel and Fraser Lake sawmills, with more than 100 layoffs, a move described as permanent by B.C.’s largest lumber producer. Conifex began a shutdown of its Fort St. James mill on Nov. 12, saying it will last at least four weeks. Interfor announced in October it is reducing production by about 20 per cent for the fourth quarter at its mills in the B.C. Interior, with reduced operating days and extended weekend and holiday breaks. Interfor has mills at Grand Forks, Castlegar and Chase. Canfor Corp. announced Nov. 1 it is curtailing its B.C. mill operations by about 10 per cent during the fourth quarter of this year. Canfor president Don Kayne said the decision is a result of “log supply challenges following another difficult wildfire season, uncompetitive log costs and declining lumber prices. Teal Jones Group, with mills in Surrey, the Fraser Valley and Salmon Arm, has had a series of week-long shutdowns this year, also mainly due to a shortage of logs. Yurkovich and Donaldson are joining B.C.’s annual forest industry trade mission to Asia in December, with stops in China, Japan and Korea. Donaldson said the focus continues to be on not just increasing Asia lumber trade, but selling more sophisticated wood products than lumber. “That’s where the long-term future lies, in adding more value, Donaldson said.

JUNIOR HOCKEY

Centennials shooting for spots on Team Canada Nineteen BCHL players named to Team Canada West selection camp. Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Two Merritt Centennials forwards hope to earn a spot on Team Canada after being named to the initial selection camp for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge. Bradley Cocca and Mathieu Gosselin were both invited to the Team Canada West camp, among 42 other players from across Western Canada’s Junior A teams. Cocca was third in BCHL scoring

when the camp rosters were announced on Nov. 26. The forward from Mississauga, Ont. has 14 goals and 27 assists, sitting four points behind Victoria’s Alex Newhook (who was also invited to the camp). Meanwhile Gosselin (Quebec City, Que.) is having a productive year of his own with 13 goals and 20 assists, good for 11th in BCHL scoring. The pair of forwards will not be Merritt’s only representatives at the selection camp, as Centennials head

Rylan (left) and Mike Van Unen are set to attend different schools next season. Herald files

coach Joe Martin has been named as an assistant for Team Canada West. Martin served as an assistant for Team Canada West in 2017, when the squad won gold over Team USA. A final roster of 22

players will be selected from the 44 who were invited to the camp, which is set for Dec. 3 to 5 in Calgary. This year’s World Junior A Challenge goes from Dec. 9 to 16 in Bonnyville, Alta.

Two Merritt Centennials players who grew up playing minor hockey in the Nicola Valley will part ways for the first time, as both of the Van Unen twins have committed to different colleges. Forward Rylan Van Unen will be headed north to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, while defenceman Michael Van Unen will be at Northern Michigan University for the 2019/2020 season.

Though the brothers will be separated by 5,269 kilometres of highway, they will meet each other in conference play, as both schools are a part of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Van Unen twins will join a long list of Cents alumni playing division one hockey in the WCHA next year, including Zach Court and Nick Wicks (University of Alaska Anchorage), former captain Tyrell Buckley (Michigan Tech University) and Jacob Berger (Minnesota State University, Monkato).

NCAA LACROSSE

NANAIMO CLIPPERS

Saturday, Dec. 8 - 7 pm

Dakota Grismer-Voght is a long way from home, and more than a little removed from the sport he grew up playing. But those factors haven’t stopped the 20-yearold from embracing the opportunity to further his studies while learning the ins and the outs of a different form of lacrosse. Growing up playing box lacrosse in the Nicola Valley, Grismer-Voght likely didn’t envision a future playing field lacrosse in the NCAA. But when the opportunity to join the program at the University of Montana presented itself last year, the Nicola Valley athlete jumped at the opportunity. “It’s such a high level of lacrosse out there, and it’s field — which makes it that much better,”

Grismer-Voght told the Herald while he was home for the Thanksgiving Day holiday. “You have to think about the game completely different.” League play for the University of Montana Grizzlies won’t be underway until the spring, but Grismer-Voght said he has been busy during the first few months at school — getting in shape and adjusting to the life of a varsity athlete. A pre-season poll put the Grizzlies at the top of the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League division II standings in October. Grismer-Voght said the team is aiming for a second straight appearance in the conference championships, with a berth to the national tournament on the line. Long term, Grismer-Voght said he hopes to set an example for other local lacrosse players to move on to play at a high level — including the NCAA. “I love the game, so I love growing it,” he said. “That’s the main focus of everything.”
