Roughly a dozen Merrittonians gathered in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening to learn more about the role of local elected offi cials.

The City of Merritt hosted a pub lic engagement session in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night, giving attendees the opportunity to ask ques tions to current and former elected offi cials about their roles. Hosted by Chief Administrative Officer Sean Smith, alongside Director of Corporate Services Greg Lowis, the event was meant to inform those considering a run for office of the commitments and expectations of a Mayor and IncumbentCouncil.councillors Tony Luck, Melvina White, Travis Fehr, and Kurt Christopherson were present, fielding questions from participants and shar ing their experiences serving on City Council. Fehr and Christopherson have publicly announced their intention to not seek reelection, while White will run for her seat again. Councillor Luck will be running for Mayor in this fall’s election. Before the Councillors took the stage, the evening began with an introduction from the“WeCAO.recognize that it’s a big com mitment to even get to this spot, where people know you’re showing up for a meeting and discussing possibly running for council,” said Smith. “You’ve had a lot of conversations to get to this point, and we’re grateful that you have an interest. We acknowledge that it’s a big role and it’s a critically important role. We’re at a point in time that’s exciting, but also challenging, and we don’t want to minimize that. We’re not going to sugar coat what it’s like being on Council.”

Council pushes back cemetery expansion

Smith added that many recent chal lenges the City of Merritt has faced, most notably the November 2021 flood ing event, are ongoing issues that require pressing attention from both City staff and elected officials. A decline in indus try has led to a smaller tax base in the City, and Merritt’s lack of an anchor industry means less direct options to ensure City services are properly funded.

“If there is one thing that we can say as staff, and I’m sure that council would reiterate that, is that running a City requires a team. That doesn’t mean you have to have the same views, in fact I think they’re often made stronger if you don’t, but it means you have to be able to work with each other respectfully,” added Smith.“If your goal in being here in this room is to advance that, to treat each other respectfully and work with your fellow councillors, then we will be suc cessful as a team advancing the goals of theToCity.”watch the full meeting, visit watch?v=MwkvroVtHrM.https://www.youtube.com/Formoreinformationonthe 2022 election, which is set to take place on October 15, visit www.merritt.ca/elec tion22.

After Smith and Lowis discussed the role of staff in City Hall, the floor was opened up to questions. Multiple attend ees asked about the weekly time commit ment, travel commitment, avoiding con flicts of interest, and the role of Mayor and Council in communicating with resi dents. The importance of collaboration was also a feature of the evening.

Merritt City Council voted unani mously to push back phase two of the City’s cemetery expansion plan at its August 23rd regular meeting, a deci sion which will see the project next addressed by a newly elected council. The next time the project will be con sidered is for the 2023 budget, well after the municipal election scheduled for October 15 of this year.

‘Tent City’ taken down on Quilchena Avenue

Within a matter of weeks, residents of downtown Merritt’s new ‘tent city’ were cleared out, with ‘No Trespassing’ signs now adorning the entrance to the former encampment. Set up in an unfinished building in the 2100 block of Quilchena Avenue, the long abandoned foundation was host to multiple tents and other makeshift shelters for a number of weeks in August.TheMerritt RCMP confirmed to the Herald that it was present on August 24 to ensure all went smoothly as a private contractor, hired by the property owner, cleared out the ‘tent city.’ There were no incidents stemming from this event. The City of Merritt said that camping is pro hibited in all locations in the City, with one notable exception.

At the May 24 regular meeting of Council, councillors voted 4-1 to allow the use of tents for overnight camping in N’Kwala Park, a small park north of Lions Memorial Park. The park is also adjacent to the Merritt Community Shelter, which offers daily meals, show ers, storage lockers, and beds. The shelter is operated by the Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society (NVSSS), with funding from BC Housing and Interior Health.Tent cities have become a common sight throughout both metropolitan and rural municipalities in B.C., shedding light on the ongoing underlying issues of housing insecurity and addictions. The latest numbers offered by the Province’s homeless count initiative are from 2020, and detected that 43 people were unhoused in Merritt at that time. For more information on NVSSS, and other support offered for those facing housing insecurity, visit www.nvshelter andsupport.com.

“The only place in Merritt where homeless people are allowed to camp is N’Kwala Park, between 7pm and 8am,” said the City in a statement to the Herald.“Camping in other locations in the City is not allowed. The City may take action when staff see, or receive com plaints about, infractions such as unsight ly property issues, trespass, etc. If there are any violations of law, the RCMP are responsible for enforcement.”

of Merritt, where one Mayor and six Councillors will be voted in until 2026. As of Tuesday, August 30, four individuals have publicly declared their intention to run for the Mayor’s office. As of the same date, only two individuals have publicly declared their intention to run for council. The period to submit nomination packages and become a candidate for either office is from August 30 to September 9. The Herald will continue to cover announcements of candidacy, and I look forward to engaging with candidates and informing Merrittonians of who is running to represent them. With a lack of council candidates currently in the running, I encourage all Merrittonians to engage in the civic election process this fall. Even if you are not eligible to vote, informing yourself and making your voice heard has a major impact on the way our representatives gain power, and more importantly, the way they use it. If you are eligible to vote: please do. Those interested in running for local office absolutely should. Putting your name to the people may be an uncomfortable and unfamiliar feeling, but progress is never comfortable.

For as long as many locals can remem ber, the Labour Day Street Market has been an event that was missing during the long weekend’s lineup of events and festivities. Luckily, an active group of residents have volunteered this year to revive the old event. The reintroduction of the street market will see a new gener ation of Merrittonians to carry the tradi tion for years to come. The Labour Day Street Market is an event that has been gone so long that for locals who’ve lived in town for a decade, it may as well have never existed.

Labour Day has been a weekend cir cled in many Merritonians’ calendars. It has been a long standing tradition by the community to visit the Rodeo Grounds during this long weekend in September for the fun filled Pro Rodeo the organiza tion hosts. Unfortunately, due to COVID19 restrictions, this tradition was put on hold. Luckily, with restrictions being lifted earlier this year, patrons are invited to saddle back up as the event and festivities are back on.

“The contestants themselves are amaz ing,” said MacGregor. “We have several World Champions entered, and a num ber of Canadian Champions, including most of the Canadians vying for a 2022 Canadian Championship at the Canadian Finals Rodeo to be held in Red Deer November 2 through 6.”

The Nicola Valley Rodeo Association will be hosting its 62nd annual Pro Rodeo on September 3 and 4 at the NVRA grounds.“We’re excited! It’s going to be a big show this year.,” said Nicola Valley Rodeo Association President Peter Spencer. “Mary MacGregor, who has taken on the chair of the Pro Rodeo Committee, has gone out and secured some of the very best people in the business. We expect, we’re going to get some of the top competitors in the country.” The rodeo will be jam-packed with activities and entertainment. There will be the main rodeo, which includes both timed and rough stock events.

During the two year break, Spencer said NVRA hosted different events such as horsemanship clinics and outdoor movie nights in order to meet annual costs for the“Wegrounds.squeaked through those two years,” he said. “We need to host events regularly in order to meet our annual costs such as insurance, property taxes, and maintenance costs. We’d bring clinicians in and sell event passes for that. We just made budget but it was touch-and-go.”

The Nicola Valley Fall Fair is back after a two year hiatus, with the COVID19 pandemic that caused the break pro viding enough time in isolation for locals to have sharpened their canning, baking, and hobby skills. Organizers are working hard to put together the two day exhi bition event, happening Saturday and Sunday of this long weekend.

The NVRA thanks the people of Merritt who have been very supportive with the Labour Day festivities.

The Fall Fair is back for 2022, and being hosted at its usual location on Lindley Creek Road, at the Fall Fair association’s Merritt Exhibition Grounds. Marius Auer/Herald

The Fall Fair is one of many events taking place as a part of the 2022 Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo weekend. Taking place on the same day as the rodeo and Quilchena Avenue street market, the col laboration between the organizers has been productive. This Labour Day week end, rodeo goers can enjoy not only the rodeo, but a rodeo dance, the Fall Fair, and a Saturday morning pancake break fast at Spirit “EverybodySquare.we’ve talked to seems very excited about it, so I’m hoping we have a good turnout for exhibits, and a lot of people coming down to take a look. We’re doing a lot with this rodeo weekend, with the pancake breakfast and the street mall, then back to the rodeo and the Fall Fair. We’re trying to make it an all around weekend that includes everybody,” added Reimer. Reimer also added that the Nicola Valley Fall Fair is always looking for volunteers, or even someone to lend the occasional hand leading up to the fair. From changing light bulbs and setting up tents, to setting tables and organizing exhibitions, there is no shortage of prep work for the fair. Individuals of all ages are welcome to volunteer, including fami lies.“The more hands, the easier it is, because it’s a big job. Leading up to the fair, most days we’re here some time dur ing the day. If anybody is interested in volunteering or lending a hand, pop up and look at our schedule. We’re always happy to have new conveners who look after different sections.” Moving forward, the Nicola Valley Fall Fair will prepare its Merritt Exhibition Grounds, located at 319 Lindley Creek Road, for the two day event. The grounds are due for a major update this fall or coming spring, in the form of a new washroom facility. The fair has received funding from the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD), and is cur rently seeking bids for the project. For more information on the Nicola Valley Fall Fair, visit www.facebook.com/ nicolavalleyfallfair.

The goal of the Fall Fair is to stimu late interest in the agricultural industry, in particular improving the quality of agricultural and other products, all while collaborating with other non-profit orga nizations as a part of the 2022 Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo weekend. At the Fall Fair, locals can submit entries in a variety of categories, including canning, baking, fruits and vegetables, homecrafts, photog raphy, livestock, and much more. Entries are shown to both onlookers and judges over the two day fair, held at the Merritt Exhibition Ground on Lindley Creek Road.“We’re an old fashion fair, we have canning, baking, photography, and ani mals outside, so we don’t have a lot of video games and things like that,” said Fall Coordinator Kathy Reimer. “We’re more agriculturally geared. We want to encourage people to do the can ning and all those things that we used to do. With COVID, we’ve had a lot more people interested in doing those types of things. I’m hoping we have a great turn out this year with all these new canners and bakers out there.”

Reimer added that many of the exhibi tions at the Nicola Valley Fall Fair focus on the preservation and improvement of food and other necessities, a practice which was once a way of life, and neces sary for survival. She added that could once again be the case in the future, and urged locals to attend the Fall Fair to learn more about traditional agricultural practices and history.

Ty Pozzobon, a Merritt-based professional bull rider who ranked 23rd in world standings, tragically took his own life in January 2017. The Ty Pozzobon Foundation was established by a group of Pozzobon’s close friends the month after his sudden passing. The foundation’s ultimate goal is to prevent chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive and fatal brain disease caused by repeated traumatic brain injuries, from taking the lives of more bull riders. Pozzobon was the first identified case of CTE in a bull rider.Pozzobon contributed greatly to both the global and local rodeo community, traveling the world to pursue the sport he loved while representing his hometown of Merritt. He hosted the Ty Pozzobon Invitational, a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event, at the Nicola Valley Rodeo Grounds for three years prior to his death. Dinsdale says the Rodeo Association decided to donate a portion of proceeds from the dance, including the sale of merchandise, to the Ty Pozzobon Foundation.

Bobby Garcia and Six More Strings will be providing live entertainment at the 2022 Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo weekend’s Rodeo Dance on Saturday night. Photo/Herald File Labour Day weekend has been host to the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo for decades, drawing fans from near and far to experience the Nicola Valley’s rich culture and watch some high-octane rodeo action. After a two year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the full docket of events is back, including Saturday night’s Rodeo Dance. The dance is back for the first time since 2019, and brings back the live music, large dancefloor, and flashing lights of past years. This year’s event will be held at the Merritt Civic Centre, with local band Bobby Garcia and Six More Strings providing live entertainment from 7:00PM to 1:00AM. The Nicola Valley Rodeo Association’s Vice-President and Dance Director, Melissa Dinsdale, sat down with the Herald to chat about the plans for this year’s event, and the dance’s support for an important cause.

“We’re bringing Bobby Garcia and his band back for live music, so there will be live music for the whole night,” said Dinsdale.“We’re supporting the Ty Pozzobon Foundation, so we’ll be selling some of the Ty Pozzobon merchandise there to make sure that we keep the support for that foundation. It is close to my heart personally, just being that they are close family friends, and important to the rodeo association and the community as a whole.”

The Rotary Club of Merritt’s President tells the Herald the club snatched up the opportunity to put on the breakfast, with the support of some local businesses.

Following the atmospheric river-caused flooding event of November 2021, and the devastation in its wake, the Rotary Club of Merritt began accepting dona tions to its flood relief fund. Reaching nearly $1 million dollars in total raised funds, the three phases of flood recovery funding made available by Rotary allowed hundreds of affected individuals and fam ilies to access much needed support. While the Rotary Disaster Fund is managed separately from the club’s regu lar account, both accounts depleted as the club continued to honour all donation requests. The Rotary Club of Merritt offers multiple scholarships, a student exchange program, community events, donations to non-profit organizations, and has even funded public parks. Lucy said for the club to continue its work, they must replenish their general revenue account.“Wewent into COVID with a healthy bank account, which is good because we had two years of no fundraising. We still had people reaching out to us for help, though, and we still were able to honour every request that came our way. That bank account is getting pretty skinny, we need to start filling it back up again,” added Lucy.“Our goal is to be good com munity members, to be involved in the community as much as possible, and to involve the community in as much as possible.”

The Rotary Club of Merritt will be serving up breakfast favourites to kick start Merrittonians’ Pro Rodeo weekend, with the local service club offering a pancake breakfast at downtown’s Spirit Square. Taking place on the first day of the rodeo weekend in conjunction with the Quilchena Avenue street market, the event will feed locals and raise money for localFromcauses.8:00 to 10:00AM on Saturday, September 3, Rotarians will be offering a myriad of foods to fuel a high-octane day at the Pro Rodeo. For a donation of $10, attendees will receive two pancakes, bacon or sausage, and a beverage. Members of the local Girl Guides chapter will join the Rotary Club in their endeavor, lending a helping hand to a fellow service group.

“We were requested by the organizers of the street market to do the pancake breakfast,” said President Leslee Lucy. “We’re really happy to do it, it’s going to be a lot of fun. We jumped on the opportunity right away. We’ve had some people donate some supplies to us, so that helps our margin quite a bit. No Frills, Walmart, and Save On all donated to us.”

• Regional Division 1 Girls Team Relay: 4th place “This year was hard but what I have learned is train insane or remain the same,” said the young swimmer. Post has been a member of the Merritt Otters since she was five years old. Her appearance in Kamloops last weekend was the first time she had been part of a provincial tournament. This is not the case, however, for Paige Asselstine. The Division 7 swimmer has been to five provincial tournaments in her 10 years of being a member of the Merritt Otters.

Planning mode is fully engaged for members of Merritt Secondary School’s Tournament Committee, a group of teachers and faculty members tasked with organizing the largest scale volleyball tournament in the school’s history. Along with a liaison from BC School Sports, the committee is organizing the AA Sr. Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships, a provincial competition that will see hun dreds of visiting players and students visit the Nicola Valley. The last time MSS hosted a provincial tournament was in the 80s, when an eight team provincial basketball tournament was hosted at the school. This December’s volleyball provincial will expand past the high school’s campus, with games being played at the school’s gym, the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT), and the former Coquihalla Middle School.“Ithink for me, it’s very exciting because we were up against bigger com munities who have bigger facilities to produce this event,” said Gian Cavaliere, vice-principal and director of athletics at MSS.“We’re grateful that BC School Sports has a lot of trust and faith in small com munities, and that they can also produce the same amount of fun, atmosphere, and excitement.”Thetournament will consist of 16 high school teams, spanning across the nine high school sporting zones in B.C. The teams will be divided into four pools, where a round robin process will then take place. The Panthers are members of the Okanagan-Thompson Zone, where there are nine AA schools competing. Being the host team, MSS will be given an automatic berth. Merritt Secondary is no stranger to hosting volleyball tournaments, having hosted the nine-team Okanagan and Fraser Valley Sr. Girls tournament in September of 2021. The Jr. Girls tour nament took place just a month later.

“These are the top swimmers in the province for the B.C. Summer Swimming Association,” Post explained. “They are the top three swimmers from every region in B.C. and for our girls to win against them is really good.” Tenley Post is competed in the Division 1 category. Over the weekend, she was able to win in the following categories.

Tenley Post (left) and Paige Asselstine (right) pose for a photo after a successful outing at their provincial meet. Photo/Janis Post Before the December, the school will host a 16-team Sr. Girls tournament, a 10-team Jr. Girls tournament. Photo/MSS The Merritt Otters ended their season with a bang as two members shined at the provincials. The local club saw members Tenley Post and Paige Asselstine place in the top three for multiple events at the provincial tournament in Kamloops this past weekend. Both swimmers stood at the podium for four different events respectively. This marks the end of the Otters return to competition after a couple of years away due to COVID-19 restrictions.“It’sactually a really big deal for these swimmers to place at their events,” said Coach Janis Post. “These placings are all within one hundredth of a second apart from each other. From first place down to eighth place, the level of competition across all of B.C. is actually insane.”

From Friday, August 19, to Sunday, August 21. The top swimmers in the province congregated at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Kamloops to compete for the fastest times in the pool.

Please visit the Merritt Otters official Facebook page to get the latest updates on their programs.

Cavaliere said these tournaments, along with the provincial championships in December, are part of a larger plan to increase Merritt’s status as a sporting des tination.“I’ve always wanted to make Merritt a destination for sports,” added Cavaliere. “We’ve done a great job in running adult tournaments but I really want to produce a community where students want to come and play.” The tournament will take place from December 1 to 3, 2022 at a number of locations in the community. “It’s definitely important to be active, especially after the past two years we’ve all been through,” said Jenn Dougherty, recreation coordinator for the City of Merritt.“Ithink a lot of us were isolated and not getting out to get that physical activity. It’s super important that we are getting out and doing that again. The drop-in option is great because often people just can’t make the commitment.”

A drop-in hockey schedule has been set until October 9. Marius Auer/Herald Merrittonians will soon be breaking the ice, on the ice, as the City of Merritt offers up drop-in hockey at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena(NVMA). With the dry floor season over, and the Centennials gearing up for their 50th BCHL season, the ice is back and ready for action. Those interested in lacing up their skates and donning the necessary gear can attend drop-in hockey at the NVMA from 8:00 to 9:30PM, on pre-determined nights of the week. A dynamic schedule is posted on the doors of the arena. An initiative of the City of Merritt, staff are excited to continue to offer drop-in hockey.
