Cannabis company seeks more power Sundial predicts they’ll be ready to fill 40 jobs in Merritt by December.

Drivers leaving Merritt towards Kamloops on the Coquihalla Highway lately may have noticed a change in scenery. Sundial Growers Inc., in partnership with BC Hydro, is hard at work creating a tunnel underneath the highway to supply power to the site of their future 20.6acre cannabis cultivation facility. Much of the underground service work at the site is already complete, said Dave Hellard, Sundial’s site development and planning manager. Crews will spend the next four weeks burrowing a two-foot wide tunnel to supply extra power to the area. “We’re using

about half of the ducts. The other half are just bringing more power to this part of town,” said Hellard. “It’s improving the whole electrical services to this side of the highway.” Sundial and BC Hydro are covering all the costs, added Hellard. Once the project is complete, BC Hydro will own and manage the
infrastructure. Building the foundation for Sundial’s cannabis cultivation buildings is next up on the agenda, said Hellard, set to get underway in the first week of October. Buildings should then be erected around the third week of October. Phase one of construction consists of one half of a “pod”
— a building larger than a football field comprised of growing rooms the plants will move through as they grow. “They move into different rooms because the lighting requirements are different, and the spacing between the plants is different as it gets larger,” said Hellard. The company’s
goal is to be ready to apply for their license to operate through Health Canada by the end of November. An estimated 40 employees will be needed to run the first half a pod. “We hope we can fill most the jobs with locals,” said Hellard, noting there is also the possibility of employees at their
flagship location in Olds, Alta, transferring to the Nicola Valley. Sundial eventually plans to erect a maximum of four pods on the site near the Merritt Airport. “They have been a great partner,” said Merritt’s CAO Scott Hildebrand. “I feel they can bring some huge economic value to our community.”

The fifth annual Logger Sports Show will be celebrating all things forestry this weekend in Merritt, with games, entertainment and education for both young and old. “The intent is to really celebrate National Forest Week and celebrate forestry in general,” said Jerry Canuel, woodlands manager for Aspen Planers. “It’s a big backbone for our community in Merritt.” The Logger Sports Show will be held on Friday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will take place in Central Park and is free to the public. VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL
Uphill battle to build nanny state The Quebec dream of universal subsidized state daycare is coming to B.C., but slowly. TOM FLETCHER Premier B.C. John VIEWS Horgan signalled the priority he places on $10a-day child care by personally making an announcement last week that an additional 300 training spaces are being added to the province’s postsecondary school system. The $2.7 million over three years will double the number of training spaces across the province to 800. (In politics, funding commitments are announced over and over, first as a global budget figure, then annual or regional amounts, unless the priority quietly changes or taxpayers’ money runs low. This provides a steady diet of “Gainsburgers” to feed the news media, as U.S. political strategists used to say.) The slogan of $10-a-day child care was embraced by Horgan’s NDP in the 2017 election, then dropped as pilot projects indicated some people get it for less, or even free. Now the slogan is back for some reason, as segments of B.C.’s $1 billion commitment to build, staff and subsidize new daycare spaces roll out. Funding additional early childhood educator training is one thing; getting students to fill the seats is another. The B.C. government is pushing to graduate more care aides for seniors homes as well, and competing for the same pool of potential employees. When the $1 billion child care budget came out in February 2018, UBC economics professor Mariana
Turkey: The empire strikes back The Ottoman Empire, like many of its Middle Eastern predecessors, had the bad habit of moving entire peoples around if they were causing trouble. And GWYNNE DYER sometimes, as The international happened to the STAGE Armenians during the First World War, what started as deportation ended up as genocide. The empire collapsed a century ago, but old habits die hard. Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdoǧan (whose admirers often call him ‘the Sultan’) has a new plan: he’s going to move a million Kurds away from Turkey’s southern frontier with Syria, and replace them with a million Arabs. And if his Western allies don’t like that, he’ll dump another million or so Arabs in Europe. “Either this happens (in Syria),” he said last week, “or we will have to open the gates (to Europe).” This is a blackmail threat with teeth: it was the sudden arrival of a mil-

lion Syrian refugees in Europe in 2016 that energised extreme right-wing populists from England to Hungary. Very few of those refugees ever wound up in either England or Hungary – the great majority of them were given shelter in Germany – but their arrival gave nationalists and racists all over Europe a stick to beat their opponents with. Erdoǧan, who is an accomplished nationalist rabble-rouser himself, knows exactly what he is doing, and he may well succeed. All this is happening because Erdoǧan is obsessed about the Kurds – or at least he knows that a lot of other Turks are obsessed about the Kurds, and he’s in political trouble at home so he needs to feed their fantasies. You can never tell with the ‘Sultan’, who has a Trump-like ability to genuinely believe whatever he happens to be saying at the moment. To be fair, the Kurds are a real problem for the Turks. They are about a fifth of the country’s population, concentrated mostly in the southeast, and they have been mistreated and their very identity denied by the Turkish state for so long that many of them would rather be independent. Some of them have even taken up arms

against Turkey in an organisation called the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party), which is now mostly based across the border in Kurdish-speaking northern Iraq. There was a ceasefire and peace talks early in this decade, but Erdoǧan started bombing the PKK again in 2015 when he had a tricky election to win and needed to appeal to Turkish nationalists. Now he’s in trouble again: his party lost control of all Turkey’s big cities in the last election. Time to whack the Kurds again, and this time it’s going to be the Syrian Kurds, another fragment of the Kurdish people that lives in northern Syria, just across the border from Turkey’s Kurds. But not for much longer, if Erdoǧan has his way. The Turkish strongman says that the Syrian Kurds are really ‘terrorists’ allied to the PKK, although there have been absolutely no attacks on Turkey from Syria during the entire eight-year Syrian civil war. What the Syrian Kurds were actually doing was defeating the real terrorists of ‘Islamic State’ in Syria, with strong air support and some ground support from the United States. However, there is no gratitude in politics. Erdoǧan now wants to evict the Syrian Kurds from their homes and drive them south, away from the Turkish border.

Trans Canada Trail spur; an uncertain future Editor,
But those of us who want to promote healthy living, tourism, and recreation may want to reconsider promoting this trail venture if the B.C. government is just going to turn the trail into a road wherever and whenever if wishes. SHAME on the Ministry of Forests! It should be promoting tourism enhancement through its “rec sites and trails’ department, not discouraging and even eliminating it. Just tell the European tourists who flock here to hike and ride the TCT that they’ll now have to suck fumes and watch out for trucks! Tourism eliminated in one stupid move, by ‘our’ B.C. government. C’mon Minister Donaldson; give this motorized initiative a decided thumbs DOWN, and show us that you support multi-use trails, and tourism in B.C.! Darch Oborne Merritt
Where will the provice find 6,000 daycare workers? Adshade questioned whether it is practical. “In this current economy, where unemployment is at record lows, we’re going to find 6,000 daycare workers?” Adshade said. “It has none of the benefits of being a teacher. It pays essentially minimum wage. You work 12 months of the year. I do not know where they think these workers are coming from.” The NDP government wants to increase wages too, and not just the minimum wage. A daycare operator told the Saanich News last year that she couldn’t open a new location because offering $19 to $21 an hour plus benefits wasn’t enough. Since we’re approaching a federal election, I’ll suggest that immigration is one place B.C. will get new workers for these fields. That’s certainly the history of filling lower-paid jobs. The federal election may also
continue a philosophical discussion of the role of the state vs. the family. Kris Sims, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, has described the NDP’s vision as “Big Daycare,” where early childhood educators run state daycares so parents can go to work at other jobs.

‘They have been mistreated for so long and their very identity denied by the Turkish state for so long that many of them would rather be independent.’
That’s not where their real homes are, but maybe they’ll be happy there once Erdoǧan has driven the Kurds out. As he said recently in Ankara, “we can build towns there in lieu of the tent cities here.” The only hitch in the plan is that the United States may feel queasy about betraying the Syrian Kurds who fought alongside American troops to destroy Islamic State. To solve that problem, Erdoǧan is threatening to send a million or so Arab refugees west into Europe. The Europeans will panic and make the Americans go along with his plan, or so he believes. He’s probably right. The European Union promised Turkey 6 billion euros to keep the Arab refugees in Turkey in 2016, but Erdoǧan claims that half of it was never paid (which, if true, was very stupid of the Europeans). He doesn’t owe the EU any favours, and it truly will panic if he opens the gates and sends the Arabs west. Donald Trump wants US troops out of Syria before next year’s election, so he’ll probably give in to Erdoǧan (and the Europeans). But the Syrian Kurds will probably fight to protect their homes.

A feasibility study will begin immediately into the possibility of beginning a new Secondary School in Merritt. The School Board made this decision at their last regularmeeting following the report by secretary-treasurer, Tom Waters, that the working drawings were still not ready for the 1972 building program. The principal of the Secondary School, R.E. Turnbull, who was present at the meeting told the board that he felt it was time for a study for another Secondary School. “As long as we keep adding on to this present building, the more difficulties we are going to have in taking the step,” he said.
And to make sure they don’t come back later, he wants to settle a million Arabs there permanently instead. There are four and a half million Syrian Arab refugees in Turkey. They’d like to go home, of course, but most of them are afraid of living under the control of Bashar al-Assad, the cruel dictator who has won the Syrian civil war. And here’s that nice Mr Erdoǧan, offering them homes in a ‘safe zone’ in northern Syria.

take in daycare children without licensing and inspection. The NDP’s nanny state vision is similar to its concept of health care, where huge public resources are being directed at making sure no one pays for their medically necessary procedures. An epic battle against private clinics drags on in B.C. courts, as the resources of federal and provincial governments are poured into delaying tactics to outlast or outlive Cambie Surgery Centre founder Dr. Brian Day, in a case the governments fear they will eventually lose. Quebec’s daycare is criticized for being affordable only because Ottawa send billions to Quebec in transfer payments, and for helping mainly professionals who have the resources to be first in line. Here in B.C., NDP politicians are outraged by suggestions one parent might opt to stay home.

The Ministry of Forests is seeking to transfer management of a 67-kilometre portion of the Columbia and Western Rail Trail to unspecified agencies to reflect local interests and support “access for industrial activity.” Recently, as a result of a donation by the Rotary Club of Merritt and a public meeting to organize folks who’d like to see a future multi-purpose (non motorized) trail along the old KVR from Spences Bridge to Brodie (to join the TCT), a society has now been formed.

TERRY FOX RUN Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 REGISTRATION: 9 am START: 10 am
Volunteers at the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxilary thrift store are all smiles as they embark on an era free of plastic bags. Dara Hill/ Herald Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD
Merritt’s local thrift store has ditched the plastic bags. Shoppers will now be asked to bring their own bag, purchase a cloth bag at checkout, or carry their new-to-them treasures out the door with their own two hands. The Nicola
Valley Health Care Auxilary — the local charity that runs the thrift store — made the switch this month. But the decision has been years in the making, said president Jacqui Hall. “For the past year or two we have seriously been working towards this day,” said Hall, noting the organization
purchased cloth bags as an alternative last year. “We were selling them or giving them away for certain things to try and encourage people to think about the idea of ‘Reuse, recycle,’ which is really what we do — we recycle and reuse everything that we get,” she said. Customers are catching on quick-
ly, Hall said. “Most people have started to bring their own bags which is really a positive, forward-thinking thing so we are very pleased with that,” said Hall. Volunteers behind the counter at the local thrift store have received more kind words than anything, said Hall. “The first day
we had no plastic bags we were complimented by a lot of our customers. So we can see they are on board with it,” she said. “I think the the community should move forward towards that — don’t have plastic bags because the plastic bags, they don’t decompose, they just become garbage.”
Runners will assemble in Voght Park and disassemble in the park at conclusion of the run. The run is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Approximately a 5 km run. If you would like any further information please go to www.terryfox.org/Run/

Logan Lake sees drop in recycling contamination District wants residents’ buy-in to avoid the prospect of being fined. Todd Sullivan KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK
The contamination levels in the District of Logan Lake recycling bins have dropped, but they haven’t yet reached levels they need to be at, according to Logan Lake CAO Randy Lambright. Contamination
was at 30 per cent earlier in the summer, but has since dropped to seven per cent during the most recent audit. A level higher than three per cent can result in fines of up to $40,000 a year from Recycle BC which Lambright explained would have to be passed on to the taxpayers. “We’d like to see people do the right things right,” he said. “It’s a work in progress. We still have a ways to go.” Staff spent the
summer working to educate the community in regards to what can and can’t be dropped into the roadside recycling bins. They also began inspecting the contents of the cans. “We embarked on a can-by-can review by our public works staff,” Lambright said. “They went through and they basically looked through each can to see what was in there.” If cans were particularly contaminated, they
wouldn’t be collected. Those residents were given warnings that if their contamination levels continued, they would be fined. The tactic worked, as Lambright noted no fines needed to be issued. Having to direct resources to the recycling problem unfortunately meant other projects in the district had to be postponed, which was disappointing for Lambright. Some of the trouble has come
from changes in what can and cannot be included in recycling bins and ensuring residents are made aware of those changes. The plan now is to continue to monitor their contamination levels and decide how to proceed based on the next audit. “Generally speaking, we’re very happy with the way our taxpayers and residents are recycling,” Lambright said. “We just need to be diligent and go that extra mile.”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Local groups aim to prevent suicide in Merritt
The kite is an international symbol of suicide prevention. Its tails signify the connection those who die by suicide retain to the community. Dara Hill/Herald Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD
The rain couldn’t stop locals from gathering in Spirit Square to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10 in Merritt.
The event, organized by Scw’exmx Child and Family Services Society, honoured those affected or lost by suicide. The day is typically marked by a memorial walk organized by Mary Ramsey in Merritt. But
with the mental health clinician out of town this month, Cely-Rae Street of Scw’exmx Child and Family Services Society spearheaded the awareness day in partnership with Nlaka’pamux Health
Authority. Participants were invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch and learn about suicide prevention and resources available for those with suicidal thoughts from the community groups
who set up tables at the event. The Merritt Hospice, the B.C. Ministry of Children & Families, Conayt Friendship Society, the Nicola Indian Band and elders were all on hand to provide support for the community. People were also welcome to recognize a loved one lost to suicide with yellow ribbons or paper angels, which adorned a symbolic yellow kite. The kite’s tail symbolizes a connection between those who have been lost to or affected by suicide and the community. “I think it is a subject that hits close to home for so many people — I don’t think anyone is unaffected by suicide,” said Street. “So it is one of those things where
SCHOOL DISTRICT
French immersion enrolemnt down in SD58 after record year Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD
On the tail end of a record year for French immersion enrolment, School District 58 reports a decline in the number of students embarking on the program in Merritt this year. A total of 193 students are currently enrolled in French immersion in Merritt, said SD 58’s assistant superintendent Jameel Aziz, approximately nine per cent of the
entire student body. There are 174 students at Collettville Elementary, and 31 at Merritt Secondary School. Only 17 kindergarten students are enrolled in the French immersion program at Collettville Elementary this year, down from 30 in 2018/2019 and 31 in 2017/2018. “There certainly is the continued trend around the province, but for us it didn’t really culminate this year in increased numbers,”
said Aziz. “They were sort of steadily increasing up until last year, but we had a very small intake for kindergarten this year, only 17 students.” A “very low” tally of kindergarten births in the Nicola Valley likely contributed to the drop in French immersion kindergarten enrolment numbers, said Aziz. But perhaps another culprit is the lottery system for French immersion enrolment put into place this year for parents hoping to get their
kids into the program at Collettville Elementary. The school board put the cap of 28 kindergarten students for 2019/2020 due to creeping numbers and a lack of qualified teachers. Under the lottery system, registration for kindergarten French immersion enrolment was open for one week in February, and all applicants had an equal shot of being selected. In the event of there being more than 28 students in the queue, a
lottery system would be used to randomly select enrolment. Students who had siblings already enrolled in Collettville were given automatic placement. But after only 17 students registered, enrolment remained open but Aziz said he’s not sure people were aware. “We really tried via our website and other information to make sure people knew that was not the case, but I just wonder if that had any impact on registration numbers,” he said.

Cents aim for first win on home ice this week
Dara Hill THE MERRITT HERALD
Team comes up short in home opener. Some 900 gathered at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena to watch the Merritt Centennials open the season in a battle against the Wenatchee Wild on Sept. 6. While the Cents started the game off strong, they couldn’t keep up the pace and Wenatchee took home the 3-1 win. When the puck first dropped, things were looking good for the Cents. For the 5th
game dating back to pre season, the Nicola Valley team scored first. The Cents capitalized on some quick puck movement up high on the power play. Daniel Tkac played it across the blue line to Joey Berkopec, who fed Vincent Guy. Guy made the quick move from his skate to stick to a shot off the post and in at the 8:37 mark. The Cents continued to control much of the fist period, but Brian Adams found the side of the net and put the puck past a sprawled out Ryan Winter to tie the game at 1:1 near the end of the frame.
Penalty trouble delayed any chance the Cents’ had of taking back the lead. The Cents were able to kill off the first two, but not the third as Wild forward Nick Caferelli streaked into the zone, broke through the box, and picked the corner on Winter to make it 2-1. The Wild kept up the torrid pace, but some solid stops from Winter kept the Cents in the game. The Cents reignited their spark at the start of the final period. Olson Werenka lowered a big hit to negate an odd man rush at his own blue line, and the Wild learned that
you don’t want to get on the wrong side of Werenka. After tackling Quinn Emerson to the ground, Werenka fed a flurry of fists to fire up the crowd. After officials escorted the pair off the ice, the Cents failed keep the energy alive. With an extra man on and a play drawn up, the Cents got their shot from the slot, but couldn’t hit the net and Brett Chorske scored on the empty net to make it a 3-1 game. That would be the final, with the Wild holding a 38-30 edge on the shot clock. Despite the loss, assistant coach Derek Sweet Coulter had
good things to say after the game about the Cents’ solid start. “I thought we really overcame some of the pressures that are involved in a home opener well,” he said. “We also started to develop some chemistry with our line, but ultimately we need to sustain that pressure for longer periods, make some better shot choices, and capitalize on our chances.” The Cents have two chances to pick up their first win of the season this weekend. They’ll take on the Penticton Vees on Sept. 13, and the Victoria Grizzlies on Sept. 14. Both games in Merritt.
Tension flared between Olson Werenka and Quinn Emerson in the final period of the season opener in Merritt. Dara Hill/Herald
PRO GOLF
Sloan hopes clinic will connect with kids Todd Sullivan THE MERRITT HERALD
Roger Sloan helps a young local golfer perfect his swing at a recent junior clinic in Sloan’s hometown of Merritt. Photo contributed

Roger Sloan may have hit the big time in the pro golf circuit, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. That was clear from his recent return to his hometown of Merritt, during which he held a youth golf clinic at the Merritt Golf and Country Club on Aug. 28. According to head golf professional Sydney Van Rensburg, about 40 kids attended, ranging in age from 6 to 14, with most of them being boys from Kamloops and Merritt.

“There was a good turnout,” he said. “He did really well. He’s a good spokesperson, that’s for sure.” Sloan provided golfing demonstrations while also talking about his life on the PGA Tour and answering questions from the attendants. A handful of the kids had the opportunity to practise their swings alongside the pro from the Nicola Valley who now lives in Houston, Tex., with wife Casey and toddler daughter, Leighton. The couple is expecting their second child on Dec. 1. “It was a really good experience for
the youngsters,” Van Rensburg said. “It’s not every day that kids of this day, especially in this area, see a PGA golfer hitting balls.” Van Rensburg is hopeful that the event might draw more interest in golf from the community. “As a small club, we need to compete with soccer, baseball, which are much cheaper sports,” he said. Before the clinic, Sloan spoke of the desire to raise the profile of golf in Merritt. “When I was a little kid, I was just doing laps around a little ninehole golf course there,”
Sloan said. “Hopefully, this can create a little bit of awareness for the need for a program, encourage kids to have
a good time and spark a little bit of interest for the younger generation to play the great game of golf.”

Linda Louise SAGER
>
Linda left this earth to join her husband Jack, daughter Sherri, and son David on August 17, 2019 at the age of 88 years. Linda shared a deep and loving relationship with her husband, Jack, and, despite losing two of her beloved children, lived a happy and full life. We will remember her laugh and cherish the loving memories we have of her. Linda will be well remembered for her generosity and kindness, giving much of her time and compassionate support to the Learning Disabilities Association of BC. She spent many hours with David, assisting him with the challenges of dyslexia. She was very thrifty, a characteristic she modelled to her family many times over. She and Jack were strong advocates for many local government issues and stood strong for meaningful environmental causes in the late 1980’s. She had a voice and made a positive impact within her local communities during her lifetime. She will be missed and not forgotten. Linda is lovingly remembered by her family. Daughters, Holly (Chris), Gai (Alex), Susan (Jeff), sister Janet, 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. We look forward to meeting her again on the other side. If it is your wish, you may remember Linda with a donation in her name to the Learning Disabilities Association of BC Vernon Chapter. A celebration of life will be held at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1122 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, at 11:00 AM, October 12, 2019. Refreshments to follow the service.
