RAUL DE LA TORRE Artist Spotlight “Everything inspires me...Where I am, geographically, socially, or emotionally, absolutely plays a part, especially in my use of color.
Raul de la Torre has chosen a unique route to enrich his acrylic paintings with texture: embroidery. First, he chooses the colors he wants to incorporate, which represent people, moments, or feelings. He paints with acrylic in blocks of color, creating a pattern on the canvas. Sometimes the paint is contained within a clean border, and other times the colors drip down the canvas or paper. He then makes horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using cotton thread. This process of embroidering adds intrigue and a sense of depth to each work. His most recent body of works reflects a series of poems by a well known poet from Catalonia, his home country. An homage to both the poet and the creative process, his technique of embroidery is a heartfelt exploration.
