This new body of work was borne out of these unexpected times. Given an unexpected opportunity to create work in an entirely new methodology, what has resulted is an artistic liberation of sorts. My established lexicon of forms have taken on new life in blown glass, in bronze, and other media, all in a visual culmination that is thrilling to me artistically. This moment in time has proven to be an impetus for an ever-expanding vocabulary of new work and I’m pleased to share it with you.

Considered one of the great colorists of his time, American artist Hunt Slonem’s Neo-Expressionist oeuvre features an exuberant and bold fauvist palette to emphasize his beloved menagerie of animals. Since 1977, Slonem has had more than 350 exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums internationally. Slonem’s work is in over eighty museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum in New York City.
Ever expansive in his Animalia quest, Slonem continues to boldly pursue his unique vision. Divining new forms for his aesthetic muses in hand-blown glass, neon and other illuminating raw materials, the artist’s impressive career spanning almost five decades enters a new phase of growth. Disciplined yet explosive in his use of color, refined gestures yet still raw and wild, Slonem uses his new mediums of choice with the same deft hand that rocketed him into the coterie of New York art world luminaries of the 1970’s. 5

PAINTINGS
Slonem is best known for his maximalist paintings of wildlife exotica—most famously birds, rabbits and butterflies. Drawing inspiration from the spiritual and natural worlds, he repeats these motifs on an epic scale in an act of visual and artistic mantra.

GLASS
Slonem’s glass sculptures are a sublime visual manifestation of the artist’s sense of play. Working with his team of artisan glassblowers to form molten glass into his own glass menagerie, Slonem’s established practice and mantra of repetition of form continues anew. Much like the artist’s gestural paintings comprised of loose handwork and playful, energetic compositions, each unique glass sculpture is imbued with the same iconic style and whimsy.

SALON BUSTS
An intentional evolution of his beloved salon style walls, comprised of many dozens of small, singular compositions shown en masse, the Salon Bust series is the sculptural manifested result. Each glass sculpture is paired with a handmade upholstered velvet cushion. The deep custom-designed frame intentionally references the traditional 18th century design much beloved by the artist and comes in three finishes; black, white and gilded in 24k goldleaf.

GLOW BOX
The artist’s desire to illuminate his works was the impetus for the Glowbox series. Inspired by the luminescence and light quality of blown glass. Each light sculpture is made of painted acrylic substrate internally lit by a custom-made LED light box with a controllable dimmer.

ELECTRIC BUNNIES
With the acknowledgment that his iconic bunny forms are larger than life, Slonem’s neon light sculptures are intended as a playful reinterpretation of his beloved rabbits. Each unique work in this exhibition is comprised of a custom powder-coated aluminum cabinet and delicate 12mm Italian neon tubing. For dramatic effect, hidden LED halo lighting is mounted behind the cabinet to create an ethereal glow.

DICHROIC PAINTING
Slonem’s new dichroic painting series emerged, quite literally, through the looking glass. The lush, dimensional line work of Slonem’s oil paintings led him to explore the layered complexity of dichroic glass. Originally created by NASA as a coating for spacebound scientific instruments, the luminescent dichroic coating serves as an undulating canvas for the artist to carve his form into. Presented in a custom-made ocular glass frame design sourced from the 18th century.
