Shivani Dugar: Time Imagined Nature, in its incredible vastness and challenging beauty mystifies the greatest of minds. In her series, Time Imagined, Shivani Dugar reveals her personal discourse with the natural world that surrounds her. Through the interplay of light, color, time and emotion, her paintings bear witness to the dynamic, inspirational energy of nature. The artist invites viewers on a visual journey to explore the spaces she has created; magical, elusive moments that foster reflection on memories past and futures envisioned. Shivani’s abstractions exhibit a multitude of textures found in nature; gestural marks some created with meticulous calculation and some purely coincidental. As Gerhard Richter proclaimed, “Chance determines our lives in important ways.” Shivani, too, turns to chance for an extra edge of creativity. She plays with gestural mark making, creating layers of lines and spaces. By interlocking and layering her marks along with the surprise element of chance, she creates a sense of movement and depth in each image, allowing the viewer to travel through the series. This artist’s journey is one of reminiscence and of moving forward. Although her style and technique remain characteristic, in Time Imagined, the artist has embraced a new palette of colors. Brilliant reds, glowing yellow golds, arresting blues, emerald greens and luminous transparent layers of orange evoke a sense of optimism. Claude Monet, the master who has influenced Shivani since she started painting, famously expressed, “Color is my daylong obsession, joy and torment.” In Time Imagined, viewers can see a shift towards a more hopeful, revelatory color scheme being explored by the artist. Time Imagined is built on successive strata of time, experience and memory. Shivani’s works’ abstract language inspires viewers to explore the power of nature on their human consciousness and spirituality. Each painting captures an ephemeral moment in nature and conveys the artist’s imaginative interpretation of this distinct time. Her objective for viewers is for them to experience the light as it enlivens the landscape, allowing them to embrace each mystical moment with hopeful wonderment. Enjoy this select group of works from Shivani Dugar’s solo exhibition. We invite you to experience the entire collection in person at the gallery. Merritt Miller & Rachel Rubin
